Hawaii has named former UCLA Chief Strategy Officer Matt Elliott as its next AD. UH President Wendy Hensel: "I'm excited to welcome Matt, with his extensive experience in Division I athletics and strong roots in Hawaiʻi, to the UH 'ohana. Our student-athletes, coaches, staff and dedicated fans will find Matt to be an exceptional leader with the passion and expertise to elevate UH athletics and guide us through the complex challenges facing collegiate sports today." Elliott: "I am committed to leading a program that reflects the pride and excellence of our local community. It will be a privilege to partner with our student-athletes, coaches and fans to chart an ambitious and unified path forward." Elliott’s appointment is subject to approval by the UH Board of Regents at a special meeting slated for June 16. If approved, Elliott is scheduled to begin his appointment no later than July 1, with a base salary of $425,004 and additional performance-based incentives. Elliott has spent the last two years as Senior Director of Policy and Public Affairs at the Hawaii Community Foundation. (link); According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Stephen Tsai, Elliott was one of three finalists. The others were George Killebrew, CRO of the United Pickleball Association and former EVP/CRO for the Dallas Mavericks, and UC Riverside AD Wesley Mallette. (link)

USC and Learfield have teamed up for a 15-year partnership to enhance the Trojans' revenue generation, NIL multimedia rights and more starting in 2026-27, per SBJ's Ben Portnoy. In addition to existing partnerships with Paciolan and SIDEARM Sports, the deal will add Fanbase and Compass to help revenue initiatives and dealmaking optimization for NIL deals. AD Jen Cohen: “This is such a highly competitive time in college athletics, and as we've been working to develop a road map for winning the new era, we're really prioritizing partnerships and being strategic about who we partner with across all areas. As we looked at the MMR space, Learfield's vision and leadership have so much natural alignment with ours.” (link)

More from Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill in the second of a two-part interview on The Big Mountain podcast, where he discusses DI governance changes and March Madness expansion. Wistrcill contends the Power 4 conferences are far more different than the other 28 DI conferences than the other 28 conferences are from one another. “What we do in the Big Sky is not that far different than when I was an AD in the MAC – money-wise, sports sponsorship, media rights. [There is] quite frankly not that much difference [between] the Mountain West and the Big Sky compared to the jump from all the rest of us to those four conferences. So now what you have is those four conferences kind of splitting as well. We have the P2 - the Big Ten and the SEC - wanting to drive their agenda and their feelings and their thoughts about where college athletics should go. … Most of what they're proposing I don't have a problem with. They want to have autonomy decisions about things that are really important to them.” Wistrcill notes that right now if the P4 wanted to have three spring football games, “they would need our vote to do that. Now, I don't really care if they want to do that. More power to them. We’re not going to do that. … If they want to employ 27 football coaches right now, they would have to legislate that through all of college football. And if they want to do that, go right ahead. I don't care. What I care about are things like championship access that’s meaningful to our institutions. I care about the money that flows from the NCAA into the member institutions. And then the last thing I care a lot about is the checks and balances that can keep us together under one tent. I think this governance structure goes a little bit too far, especially in that last area. What it would allow them to do if this passes is essentially make all decisions in whatever area they want to change without the membership checking them.” Wistrcill cites as an example the P4 telling the Big Sky they’ll keep their men’s basketball AQ, but it will be locked into the Tuesday of tourney week against, for instance, the Mountain West AQ. “That’s where I have a problem and that’s where I feel like I’ve got to stick up and fight for what I believe in.” On March Madness expansion, Wistrcill says he believes the votes are split 50/50. “I think we’re all open to the discussion.” More. Massachusetts AD Ryan Bamford tells the Daily Collegian’s Dean Wendel that when it comes to revenue-sharing, “we’re going to be in a really positive position as it relates to our [MAC] peers from an additional benefit, scholarship and NIL standpoint in our investment there. In a sport like basketball, we want to compete with the Big East schools, and we don’t just want to compete with the MAC schools. We want to compete for student-athletes: for acquiring them, recruiting them and then retaining them with those in the Big East and some of the [Power 4 schools].” According to Bamford, UMass plans to spend $5-6M in rev-share on student-athletes in 2025-26 with plans on increasing that figure to $8-10M the following year. “[Our finances give us] a pretty good head start and advantage. I think we [have] to spend those resources strategically and smartly. … We’re going to be in a position in two or three years where we may be spending more than potentially some of the high-end [Atlantic 10] schools and maybe even lower-end ‘Power 4’ schools in basketball.” To help reach those rev-share figures, Bamford explains that “some of the nutrition and dining programs, the academic support services, we’re in a really healthy spot in a number of areas that if we were to adjust, pare it back by 5%, it’s probably not going to change the operational posture. We’ve already talked to our coaches about [it], that if you could do away with five percent of something, what would it be? … It’s just going to get reinvested into something that probably, by measure, would impact winning a little bit more.” (link)

With the Women’s College World Series championship set to continue tonight, ESPN’s Dave Wilson profiles Texas Tech Softball HC Gerry Glasco, who tells him: “Nothing about softball is scary to me.” For context, Wilson points out that “Glasco has lived a colorful life and has taken a winding path to becoming one of the best coaches in college softball at 66, making a run at a national title in his first season at Texas Tech. But he also has the kind of perspective that comes from immense tragedy. In 2019, his youngest daughter Geri Ann died in a car accident when she was a volunteer coach for him at Louisiana.” Glasco explains: "Once you realize that you don't have fear of failure to keep you from doing things, you realize there's things you can't understand. You go for it." Prior to coaching softball as a career, Glasco was a hunting and fishing guide, “taking businessmen and wealthy hunters quail and duck hunting in Mexico … But beginning in 2007, his trips across the border started becoming more treacherous. He was later informed that disputes between rival drug cartels made it too dangerous to continue operating as usual; additionally, the DEA told him his clients were too high-profile and would become kidnapping targets if their travel arrangements or hunting permits were leaked. With his primary source of income now unavailable, he turned full-time to softball, eventually landing a job on Georgia’s staff. Bulldogs HC Lu Harris Champer says she was always drawn to how hard Glasco's players played for him, because he was funny, charming and they knew he cared for them. “Whether things are going in the right direction or the wrong direction, doesn't matter. The energy is there, the passion is there. The belief is there and the figure-it-out mindset is there." Lots more. (link)

ECU Baseball HC Cliff Godwin writes on X that “Our system is so BROKEN! We have coaches at P4 schools texting our players directly who are not in portal! And we have proof!" On3’s Thomas Goldkamp: “Cliff Godwin didn’t provide proof immediately, though his original tweet was still very fresh at the time of this writing. So it’ll be interesting to see if he opts to lay everything bare on social media at some point.” (link)

Meanwhile, Dan Furman, president of the Louisville-focused 502Circle, says Cardinals Baseball HC Dan McDonnell truly bought into NIL for the first time last offseason after a hesitant embrace the year prior. While Furman declined to provide precise dollar amounts, he tells the Courier-Journal’s Payton Titus the 502Circle ramped up spending for the 2025 roster to retain talented players including (outfielder) Zion Rose, (righthanded pitcher) Patrick Forbes and (righthanded pitcher) Tucker Biven. More Furman: “I would be hard-pressed to find seven teams that spent more in the ACC. And the ACC was the most competitive baseball league in the country this year.” Since FY19, UL’s baseball spending has increased from $4.572M (3.02% of the budget) to $5.59M (3.39%). (link)

Villanova will join the Patriot League as an associate member in football beginning in 2026. Wildcats AD Eric Roedl: “We have great respect for the institutions that make up a very competitive FCS conference and we share in their strong academic missions. The geographic footprint of the Patriot League is a perfect fit for Villanova, and as we get ready to embark on a new chapter for our football program, we remain committed to competing at the highest levels of the FCS and continuing to add to our accomplished history on the gridiron.” (link)

Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner notes the pending Texas bill relating to the compensation and professional representation of prospective college athletes has been signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott. “The biggest change? Texas removed the ban on paying PROSPECTIVE college athletes for their NIL. Previously, high school recruits couldn't earn NIL money until they were enrolled. This opens the door for legitimate recruiting incentives through NIL deals. But the law prohibits NIL arrangements with prospective student athletes under 17 (unless already enrolled in college).” (link); Full bill. (link)

Sexual assault survivor and activist Brenda Tracy has filed a lawsuit against the Michigan State Board of Trustees, alleging that MSU mishandled her 2022 sexual harassment complaint against former Football HC Mel Tucker and that trustees leaked her name to the media and public at large, which caused threats and harassment, as well as damage to her reputation and business as a sexual assault awareness activist. The suit seeks unspecified damages for seven counts, including gross negligence and violation of due process rights. Tracy also alleges that the university should have done a better job of screening Tucker before hiring him in 2020. She says she experienced psychological and emotional distress that also caused medical and therapy bills. A Michigan State spokesperson said the university does not have a comment on the lawsuit. A defamation lawsuit Tracy previously filed against Tucker is set for trial in June 2026. (link)

Michigan State officially introduced J Batt as its next AD, and Batt covered a wide range of topics with media members, including the importance of learning MSU’s story and its importance in the NIL era: “It's incredibly important. My first job will be to listen and learn. I'll spend a lot of time asking questions and listening and learning. At the end of the day, college athletics is worth it, right? The endeavor that we have and that we take on is an opportunity, and so, it's changing at a rapid and dynamic pace. But that change provides opportunity, and it provides some things that are the same, and those things are worth it.” Batt also talked about NIL in broad terms: “We're going to be extremely successful and competitive in that space. We're going to be intentional about providing all of our coaches the resources to be successful at a championship level. I'll tell you, I believe as we head into the revenue-share of the post-House settlement, what that requires will change, and how we approach that space will change. But I can tell you we'll have a great plan. We'll be united in that plan. We'll be aligned in that plan from President Guskiewicz to our coaches, and to our board as we head into that era.” More. CollegeAD breaks down the financials of what Michigan State will pay to sign new AD J Batt: “While we've seen various buyout figures all over the internet, we were able to take a look at Batt's most recent contract at Georgia Tech - an extension that was effective as of December 2024. The deal paid Batt a base salary of $979K starting January 1, 2025, with his salary scheduled to increase by $100K annually. Over the course of the five-year term, Batt was set to earn a total of $5,895,000 in base pay. According to his contract: If he terminates this contract…he shall pay as liquidated damages to the Association, or cause liquidated damages to be paid to the Association, 30% of all remaining unpaid Base Salary and Supplemental Compensation amounts which would have been paid through December 31, 2029.” CollegeAD notes that “Batt was earning $271K annually in supplemental pay. Putting pen to paper, when you combine base pay and supplemental pay over the entire term, Batt would have earned $7.25M. Broken down monthly, Batt's pay would average out to $120,833. Now, having worked five months, Batt would have had $6,645,883.33 in remaining compensation had he remained at Georgia Tech. Taking 30% from that, Batt's buyout totals roughly $1,993,750, all due to Georgia Tech within 60 days. The Spartans also owed former AD Alan Haller a $1.237M buyout, per the terms of his contract.” (link)

Arkansas State officially introduced its new AD in Chris Pezman, who talked about the importance of ensuring the Red Wolves were prepared for the changes in college sports: “The challenge that we have right now with the employment status of athletes and the inability to have collective bargaining, those are things that have to get solved, because those are some of the things that I think are holding up some of the supplement issues, particularly around roster sizes. We just have to be very open-minded to embrace the change and accept it and figure out ways to be nimble enough to navigate it.” Pezman also emphasized the importance of the fan experience: “I can’t control what happens on the field. We’re going to have wins and losses, but we can control the experience the customer has, and the guest has, when they show up. If we can create value for them to show up and support us, that’s what our goal is.” To get started, Pezman said he’ll be “acclimating myself with the coaches, understanding what their needs are, wants are, then start prioritizing that. I want to get integrated with the staff so that they are able to effectively work and move forward and are not waiting on decisions from me to come down the pipe.” (link)

Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill joins the Big Mountain podcast and says: “We believe we’re doing college athletics the right way at our level. It's still about graduation, it’s still about the student-athlete experience. We’re going to play high-quality Division I college athletics at the highest level, and we’re going to try to win national titles, but it’s still finding that balance between ‘what are we trying to accomplish here?’ – and it's not about “how much can we pay a player?’ So that's the great thing about our level. I feel like we do it the right way and that's how we talk about that experience being elevated – it’s that balance between high-level athletics and academics that prepare you for success after you graduate.” Wistrcill also talks about the future of the Big Sky’s membership and notes that “we know who we are. People aren’t really trying to be something they’re never going to be. … I think that my job as commissioner is to make sure all our member institutions have their eyes wide open to any membership decision they might make. And I have a unique background because I worked at two Power 4 schools, I was a G5 AD for 6 years, now I'm an FCS commissioner. So I can share with them, ‘Here’s the good and the bad about trying to compete at the G5 level.’ And there's some great things about it, but there’s also some real challenges from a funding level [and] trying to make that work.” Full podcast. Hero Sports’ Sam Herder weighs in on Utah Valley’s move to the Big West: “While not directly football-related, the ripple effects here could lead to FCS realignment. With Utah Valley leaving the WAC in 2026, the conference will be down 5 members: Utah Tech, Southern Utah, Tarleton State, Abilene Christian, and UT Arlington. The first 4 sponsor football and play in the UAC, a football-only league partnering with the ASUN (Austin Peay, Central Arkansas, EKU, North Alabama, West Georgia). Can the WAC rebuild once again? Or is Utah Valley the first domino and others will also look to find a new home? The Big Sky doesn't sound interested in expansion. The Summit League/MVFC partnership could help in targeting new members, either the remaining Utah schools or Texas schools in the WAC. Tarleton and Abilene Christian, two 2024 FCS playoff teams, in the MVFC, anyone? Will the ASUN and WAC partnership hold strong, or will there be attempted poaching? We'll see, but Utah Valley was a domino waiting to fall for other movement to take place.” (link)

Ohio State Football HC Ryan Day believes the Big Ten deserves four College Football Playoff AQs, telling ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg: "We're in the Big Ten, and we have 18 teams and some of the best programs in the country. I feel like we deserve at least four automatic qualifiers." Day points out how the most recent Big Ten expansion added the top teams from the original Pac-12, including the only two – Oregon and Washington – that made the four-team CFP and played for national titles. "You would have had at least a team or two [in the CFP] from out there. So it only makes sense when you have 18 teams, especially the quality of teams that you would have [in] that many teams representing the Big Ten." Day adds: "If you don't have those automatic qualifiers, you're less likely to play a game like we're playing this year against Texas, because it just won't make sense. If we do, then you're more likely to do that, because we play nine conference games in the Big Ten. The SEC doesn't. So it's not equal." Day also sounds off on the shrinking of rosters from 120 to 105 despite an increasing number of games (OSU played 16 last season). "I'm concerned about 16 or 17 games with a 105-man roster. With 120, it's about maxed-out. You have to stay healthy, and all it takes are a couple injuries during that long of a run. But in the NFL, you can hire somebody off of waivers. In college football, you can't. I'm concerned about the length of the season with 105." (link)

Louisiana Tech unveils a renewed vision that emphasizes people, purpose, and progress to help chart the course for LA Tech Athletics. The vision is supported by five core “CHAMP Values” that will guide the department’s daily actions and long-term goals. They are: “Connection – Building trust and relationships; Charge – Impact and attack the moment; Character – Consistency of positive habits; Community – Past, present & future, together; and Competition – Be your best, expect our best.” Bulldogs AD Ryan Ivey: "Our vision is about more than athletics—it's about the people who make it all possible. By aligning our actions with purpose, we're creating a pathway that uplifts individuals and strengthens the impact of the Louisiana Tech brand from student-athletes to community partnerships, and broader strategic branding efforts. … This launch also marks the beginning of a continuous journey. We will implement regular opportunities for teams and departments to evaluate their alignment with CHAMP behaviors, reflect on performance, and revise standards as needed. This ongoing process of assessment, reflection, and accountability ensures that the vision stays active and responsive to the evolving needs of the department in a very transient and turbulent time in college athletics." The Middle Tennessee State Board of Trustees Finance and Personnel Committee voted May 20 to propose a $97.50 increase in mandatory student fees for the upcoming academic year, $64 of which would be allocated to MTSU athletics. The Student Government Association pushed back on the increase, writing: “We note that a large portion of this mandatory fee increase can be attributed to Athletics. This is a special concern to our students for at least two reasons. … It has been a longstanding practice at MTSU that departments proposing an increase to a mandatory student fee first bring the proposal to the SGA executive board.” Blue Raiders AD Chris Massaro said he regretted not taking it to the students before making the proposition, but did so because he was unaware of how much money athletics needed when SGA questioned different colleges. “At the time, I didn’t know what to ask for. I knew we would need some help with all the balls we had up in the air.” Massaro also noted the public comment period is still open until June 10. (link)
