Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger shares a glimpse of the NIL Go platform and submissions process during a session today at the 2025 NACDA Convention. “As reported plenty in the past, any new NIL deal after settlement approval (starting June 7) and any NIL deal with payments after June 30 need to be entered into NIL Go and is subject to the clearinghouse. The front-loading is over. Ended at midnight Friday. Here is the interface and 5-step process for athletes to individually submit their 3rd-party NIL deals: 1) Upload contract; 2) Payor info; 3) NIL deliverables; 4) Compensation figure; 5) Final confirmation. Dellenger also shares a look at a NACDA presentation from LBi, “the software company operating ‘CAPS,’ the new cap management system where schools input player rev-share deals. This is an example of the main team landing page to track rev-share, as well as individual sport and player pages.” Have a look. (link)

Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich reports from a House v. NCAA implementation presentation at NACDA and notes that “Clemson AD Graham Neff says athletes will have to submit deals to NIL Go within five days of signing. Additionally, schools will be held accountable if their athletes fail to submit. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork says that as athletic departments, "we are literally going to sign a piece of paper" that says they agree to abide by the House settlement rules. Bjork adds of the criteria for what constitutes fair market value: "This wasn't people in a back room that created this. This was in the settlement." Arizona AD Desiree Reed-Francois comments on anonymous reports saying some won't abide by the $20.5M revenue-share cap: "We need to shift our mindset and make this work." In setting up the College Sports Commission’s enforcement process, Bjork notes the goal is to set up a “pro sports model” that is transparent and isn’t conducted by peer institutions. Furthermore, Bjork remarks that the CSC will have a “menu of penalties that they can choose from.” Christovich also reports that an “administrator from the University of North Dakota tells power conference ADs that they just haven't gotten a lot of info about settlement implementation. He asks: ‘Do you happen to know when some of that information might come out?’ He says he heard about a 51-page FAQ and he hasn't gotten it yet.” Washington AD Pat Chun says the power conferences have 30 days to send out the FAQ, and that plaintiff lawyers have to look at it. Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould this week remarked that “I’ve been saying all along that as we got close on the media rights, we would pivot and get out there and start identifying new members. We’re at the point that we know enough to move forward and start engaging prospective members.” Gould also points out that being a named defendant in the House settlement “meant we were intimately involved. That was a benefit to us. The fact that we’re starting with a blank slate in the middle of this allows us to build something for the marketplace as it exists now.” As an example of this, The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner notes Gould did not agree with the Power 4 commissioners who indicated they would leave revenue distribution up to the schools. Gould: “That was not my answer. We are having conversations around strategy. That doesn’t mean there won’t be some institutional autonomy. But if it’s entirely about local authority, then you’re missing the opportunity to prioritize the sports that are important to you. We have a tremendous opportunity. We’re doing a lot of brainstorming. Where are we aligned? What do we do with the Pac-12 Enterprises around NIL content? How do we feel about the revenue-sharing?” When it comes to football roster limits, Gould explains: “We’re discussing how we build depth. Our schools get raided. How do the scholarships and the NIL piece work to help us? We’re realistic about where we sit and looking at how we can best retain our players.” Meanwhile, asked if every member of the rebuilt Pac-12 would opt into the revenue-sharing agreement, Gould replied: “The deadline is June 15, and I don’t want to speak for the schools. But put it this way: Every institution will participate in the House benefits.” (link)

More on the Pac-12 as leaders met on Tuesday morning for 90 minutes to discuss various agenda items, including expansion and media rights developments. On the expansion front, JohnCanzano.com’s namesake is told the focus has narrowed to “one or two” options, and UNLV has become “less and less of an option.” That leaves Canzano “thinking about Texas State as the front-runner for expansion addition. After that, maybe UTSA, as a Texas State travel partner. The Pac-12 could do a Texas two-step here and add two schools that get the conference into the state.” On the possibility of adding Memphis: “There has been some apprehension from corners of the new-look Pac-12 about adding the Tigers. Memphis would add travel costs, and there’s some reluctance, I’m told, to drag athletes in non-revenue sports across multiple time zones.” (link)

Baylor AD Mack Rhoades says he and his team have “probably run the ground ball out on hundreds of models and really just being thoughtful and careful in terms of what path we decide. This was a race that we were intentional about not wanting to be first across the finish line but really take a wide-angle view of the landscape and what was happening all around us. And I think we’ve done a really, really good job of best positioning ourselves. That doesn’t mean there aren’t pain points. There’ll be pain points for coaches, for administrators, for student-athletes. Some really tough decisions had to be made, but I’m proud of our cabinet, I'm proud of our executive team, I'm proud of our coaches for how they've navigated all of this – and through this all, doing it in a manner that stays true to our Christian values and our mission and in terms of preparing champions for life.” Rhoades goes on to predict that if – “and let me underline ‘if’ – if the rules, the parameters around external NIL work, it is my belief you’re going to see significant market correction. I think gone are the days where you have a $15-20M basketball roster, where you have a $30-40M football roster. I am a huge believer, big believer in terms of our student-athletes earning NIL in terms of their brand. But what we’ve been doing, as mentioned previously over the past two years, is strict pay-for-play. And so when we think about the new world of NIL…it has to have a true business purpose. Our student-athletes will have to do something to earn those monies. And then it has to be a fair range of compensation.” Full interview. (link)

A private equity partnership does not appear to be in Alabama’s immediate future, according to Crimson Tide AD Greg Byrne, who says: “We’ve had all sorts of people from private equity come at us. We’re Alabama. People often want to have us involved in different things. I have not seen a model that makes any sense whatsoever. Private equity is not going to care about Olympic sports. They’re not going to care about the academics and the responsibilities we have there. They are bottom line-driven. They are really good at what they do. Could I see a program ever doing that? I guess. But private equity is going to want their return. At the same time, too, at some point you’re going to have to pay the piper if you have private equity. You better make sure you can far exceed the growth you can do on your own if you’re going to bring somebody else in because we do have a responsibility in so many different ways that maybe doesn’t make a lot of business sense but is important to the fiber and the fabric of what college athletics represents.” (link)

Wake Forest AD John Currie tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy that with the House settlement approved, an “ongoing effort is still going to be educating our constituencies. Because we still have so many wild ideas and wild rumors about what's true and what isn’t true and then there's plenty of people – you know, you and I kind of live in an echo chamber; everybody talks about this all the time – but there's still plenty of our constituents that really don't know what this is about. They’ve never heard of it and if they have heard of it, they don't know what it's about. So, how it affects our programs, how it affects our student-athletes, benefits our student-athletes in many regards, but there’s a lot more to it than people realize. And as our staffs have been doing their regular jobs over the past year, putting on events, academic counseling or whatever, we’ve also been standing up this apparatus. So, the education part is ongoing.” Currie also talks about The Grounds mixed-use development, a “Winston-Salem community project that happens to be around this land that's vacant, land we've had for a long time, and we're working. We’ve got a huge clearing, a massive construction fence. I'm excited, people are going to see it this fall, we got a $35M grant from the state of North Carolina. The first phase really results in a $1.2B economic impact to our community and definitely will add to what we aspire to, which is the best fan experience in North Carolina.” More from Currie. (link)

U.S. Soccer has announced the formation of the NextGen College Soccer (NCS) Committee, a group consisting of corporate and league executives, team owners and college sports administrators tasked with charting reforms in the college game. Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Luke Cyphers explain the “group will be called on to publish a ‘white paper’ with recommendations for the both the men’s and women’s college game by the start of the upcoming academic year. Another focus will be to implement potential solutions with interested conferences and colleges during the 2026-27 school year. … U.S. Soccer, newly bolstered by contributions from billionaire donors, has been weighing a plan to invest millions of dollars annually into the initiative.” NCAA restrictions on practice time and the compressed 12-week competition schedule have “hindered college coaches’ ability to attract serious young American players seeking year-round training and competition,” according to Libit and Cyphers, who add: “If freed from some NCAA rules, the thinking goes, college programs could not only develop elite talent – catching late bloomers and players interested in furthering their education, while keeping the door open to turning pro – they could also help further the game’s overall growth.” Deloitte Consulting CEO Dan Helfrich will chair the NCS, which also includes Bank of America executive David Tyrie; Warner Bros. Discovery VP Craig Barry; Seattle Sounders and Reign owner Adrian Hanauer, and KC Current co-owner Angie Long; Wasserman VP and longtime player agent Richard Motzkin; execs from MLS, the USL and the NWSL; Maryland President Darryll Pines, Davidson AD Chris Clunie, Penn State AD Pat Kraft and Syracuse AD John Wildhack. U.S. District Court Judge James C. Dever III has ruled in favor of the NCAA to deny NC State football student-athlete Corey Coley Jr. a fifth year of eligibility. Dever, in his ruling, suggested that if NCAA eligibility rules violated antitrust law because they restrain NIL opportunities, that would “compel” a “nonsensical outcome,” according to Sportico’s Michael McCann, who adds: “The judge reasoned that there are numerous NCAA rules that ‘could potentially affect a player’s ability to earn NIL compensation’ and that could be deemed violative of antitrust law under Coley’s test. Those rules concern such topics subject as: minimum academic requirements; prohibition of the use of illegal drugs; prohibition of sports wagering; disciplinary proceedings that could result in suspension or expulsion; and ethical standards.” (link)

House Decisions...
+ Saint Joseph’s will opt into the House settlement, according to Hawks AD Jill Bodensteiner, who says: “By opting in, we're ensuring that our men's and women's basketball programs can continue competing at the highest levels of the Atlantic 10 and Big 5." (link)
+ La Salle will also opt in, according to Explorers AD Ashwin Puri, who notes: “Beyond the benefits of revenue sharing, we are committed to investing in our facilities, including the newly renovated John E. Glaser Arena. Our current fundraising efforts focus on renovating locker rooms, upgrading competition surfaces, and installing new scoreboards. These initiatives are essential to providing a first-class student-athlete experience.” (link)
+ McNeese State AD Heath Schroyer says the Cowboys have “decided to opt in and bring our collective/NIL in-house and participate in revenue-sharing. We’ll keep the same scholarship numbers this first year for each sport. During this first year, we will evaluate both our financial situation and the national landscape.” (link)
+ James Madison has made two key personnel adjustments in light of the House settlement. Assoc. AD Stephen LaPorta will take on the new title of Assoc. AD for Governance and Talent Management with an emphasis on all aspects of scholarship enhancement. In addition, former Senior Assoc. AD Cliff Wood will return to JMU as GM with a focus on overall revenue-sharing strategy and negotiation. Wood has spent the last two years as President of the Board of Directors for the Dukes-focused Montpelier Collective. (link)

All eight members of the new Pac-12 have signed their Grant of Rights and membership agreements, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes it “is a signal that the league is finalizing a new media rights package that is expected in the coming days. The media rights package is expected to feature as many as four different partners…[and] paves the way for the league to formally offer invitations to expansion targets. The conference needs one full-time, FB-playing member to reach FBS minimum.” (link)

Penn State AD Pat Kraft reiterates the Nittany Lions will not be pursuing private equity funding, telling the Centre Daily Times’ Jon Sauber: “We are always in a position of power because of who we are. We don’t need to take private equity money and alter our business.” Sauber also points out that Kraft last year adamantly opposed PE: “Why would I give up my money? I love this private equity, they’re basically saying we’re dumb. We don’t know how to run our business. ... Why would Penn State take private equity money? I’ve got 94,000 season ticket holders. We sell out hockey. We sell out wrestling. I’ve got the best fan base in the country. Why do I need private equity? So someone can tell me I’m stupid? I have enough people around me to tell me I’m stupid.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel in a letter to fans notes the added costs of the House settlement “left U-M Athletics facing a projected deficit of nearly $27M for the 2025-26 academic year ($20.5M to fully participate in revenue sharing and $6.2M in new scholarships). With only six home football games this fall, our projected year-over-year decline in revenue of roughly $19.1M steepens these costs. The department has implemented several measures to counteract these new expenses. Through adjustments to university financing, budget cuts, travel policies, not filling select positions when vacated and the utilization of new revenue streams, we have reduced our estimated need from $27M to $15M for the coming year.” Manuel explains that “to combat the added cost, the department staff will gradually decline in number through two methods: attrition, with a long-term goal of a 10% reduction in total staff, and through a stricter approval process for new hires. The department has committed to more than $10M in budget cuts for the coming fiscal year, and has worked with the main campus to reduce its allocation from TV revenue to the university from $8M to $2M. We also revamped our travel policy, which resulted in over $900K in savings during 2024-25. Our athletic department is also producing more revenue from events in our facilities, such as our partnerships with Upper Deck Golf and AEG/Zach Bryan. Events such as international soccer matches and the 2014 NHL Winter Classic generated between $750K and $3M each for the department in the past. The 2024 calendar year saw the implementation of alcohol sales at Crisler Center, Yost Ice Arena, and Michigan Stadium, which generated over $2.25M for the department. We will continue to evaluate other opportunities to generate additional revenue throughout the department.” Full letter. (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello indicates that “it’s believed Texas Tech will pay its players $55M (revenue sharing + NIL) among all its programs this year, making the Red Raiders perhaps the highest-paying college athletics program in the country.” (link); More on Texas Tech’s launch of the Red Raider Club, which will integrate The Matador Club collective under its umbrella. From TTU: “By integrating the Matador Club under its banner, the Red Raider Club will lead the effort to provide annual funding for revenue sharing, student-athlete scholarships and a comprehensive range of programs that elevate the student-athlete experience – both on and off the field. This transformation represents a commitment to adapt, to lead and to invest in championship-caliber programs and student-athletes.” Red Raiders AD Kirby Hocutt: "As we transition to a new model, know that we are ready. Over the past year, we have studied various impacts of the House settlement on our department and have been ready for this new era in college athletics. Texas Tech will continue to be a leader nationally in this era.” (link)

Maine announces it will not opt into the House settlement, indicating in a statement that "while a final decision is not yet required by the NCAA, based on the information currently available, our intention as of today is to opt out for the 2025-26 year. As this decision is an annual one and can change each year, we will continue to evaluate the situation as it evolves." (link)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s John O’Connor examines the approaches Richmond and William & Mary are taking to a post-House landscape, and Spiders AD John Hardt says: “We’re in a similar situation to all the best programs outside of the Power Four in that we’re having to be creative and aggressive in developing new revenues and new support so we’re able to share direct payments with our men’s and women’s basketball players. And we’re having good initial success in doing that.” Tribe AD Brian Mann notes: “We’re still moving forward and evolving in this new landscape where student-athletes capitalize on their name, image and likeness, and we feel like we’ve been very competitive in the CAA in that space. We’re doing it a little different than everybody else. We have two amazing basketball coaches, and that’s really where it has hit the CAA the most, and they’ve been really creative in the way they’ve built their rosters. … Moving forward, we’re going to have to continue to grow, and we’re going to have to make sure that we can be as competitive as we can possibly be in that space to ensure we’re able to attract and retain the right student-athletes for William & Mary. We’ll do that. We have a great support system.” Both schools, O’Connor points out, will continue to rely on philanthropy and their respective collectives, and there are no plans to eliminate sports at either school. Mann explains that philanthropy “means that we can start really thinking about a future of 23 sports, with 500-plus student-athletes, and not have to consider making reductions because of financial [issues].” (link)

“With the revenue-sharing era now officially underway, Title IX defense attorneys say colleges are preparing for a potential wave of gender-equity lawsuits from athletes, especially challenges over how that revenue is distributed,” according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Michael McCann, who add: “These preparations, months in the making, include budgeting for costly and prolonged litigation—and potential settlements with classes of athletes—as well as commissioning audits to identify other areas of Title IX vulnerability.” Church Church Hittle and Antrim Partner Todd Shumaker says some of the FBS schools he advises are allocating anywhere from a few million dollars to $20M in anticipation. “They are trying to balance antitrust concerns with Title IX concerns, knowing that even if they are working toward equity, that it is not going to get there right away. Like a lot of stuff in college sports, it is not if you are going to get sued but when you are going to get sued.” Libit and McCann go on to observe that distributing the bulk of rev-share to football “would belie the spirit, if not the letter, of Title IX. These are not abstract considerations; plaintiffs in the revenue-sharing era will be able to litigate direct payments, but they are not limited to challenging only that aspect of a new system.” LaKeisha Marsh, the higher ed/college sports practice chair at Akerman LLP, expands on that point: “Revenue may just be a catalyst to open up the door for looking at Title IX. If plaintiffs’ counsel can point to some other ongoing (Title IX) issue or disparity that is happening, they will.” With that in mind, Marsh adds that her firm has been retained by multiple schools over the past two years to conduct Title IX risk assessments. Ultimately, Libit and McCann note the “only guaranteed beneficiaries in these legal battles are the lawyers, provided they can keep up with the growing caseload.” Shumaker tells them: “We feel comfortable we are ready for it. If it turns into a torrent, we will deal with it as it comes. We are happy to have the business.” (link)

Learfield has launched Learfield Impact, a new brand vertical that brings all of its NIL endeavors into a centralized location. Specifically, Learfield Impact will offer people and resources via the company’s dedicated team of NIL leaders across college sports, provide original content powered by Learfield Studios, and give access to Learfield’s Compass NIL platform. Learfield SVP/Head of Content Grant Jones tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Being innovative is more important now than it ever has been in college sports, and that innovation is focused on NIL. Collaborating with [EVP/NIL Growth & Development] Solly [Fulp] and his team and having a brand like ‘Learfield Impact’ allows us to say, ‘OK, what can we do now with content and athletes that maybe we couldn’t do two years ago?’ Because suddenly you have athletic departments who are much more interested in hearing that word ‘innovate,’ and are innovating themselves, frankly.” (link)

The West Coast Conference will add conference championships in men’s soccer, women’s soccer and softball beginning in 2026-27. WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson: “Following a thorough evaluation of each championship proposal, the membership was aligned in adding championship events in men’s soccer, women’s soccer and softball. We look forward to hosting high-caliber championships and are excited for our programs to have the opportunity to compete for a title and secure the Conference’s automatic qualification to their respective NCAA Championship.” (link)
