Penn State AD Kraft on resources for the Nittany Lions hoops programs: “I want to win national championships. I’m here to win national championships. [...] So what do you have to do to win? You’ve got to invest. And you’ve got to be focused on the right investments to get us to where we want. [...] I think really looking at the practice facility is a big issue right now. We’re trying to figure out what’s the best way. I think everything is on the table. ... A practice facility is something that would be down the road right now, but I think it’s something we’re really looking at. [...] At the end of the day, you could have the Taj Mahal but if you’re not taking care of your kids then it doesn’t matter. And I think the other thing is continuing to allow our staffs to go recruit the best athletes and giving them the best opportunity to be successful in the recruiting landscape is key. ... How you travel is really important and how we take care of both programs in that regard because I believe we can win.” (link)

“I’ve said this before, I’ll say it again: We’re never gonna be first, but we’re never gonna be last.” That’s Nebraska AD Alberts on his approach to NIL in Lincoln. On the hire of new Asst. AD for NIL Strategy & Governance Bateman: “I’ll tell you: I probably should’ve done this six months ago. You think about, well, six months isn’t very long, but the amount of change in six months is crazy. [...] We have a dedicated person now that’s looking at everything from what other schools are doing, what our state law looks like, should we amend the state law. So making recommendations about how we best position not only ourselves but our collectives, our student-athletes to be successful. Because this is a highly evolving space, and we need to be a leader in it.” (link)

Coming up on her one-year anniversary leading the Wolf Pack, Nevada AD Rempe visits with Nevada SportsNet’s Murray, dives into the efforts surrounding the “Nevada’s College Town” initiative, to “get people excited” about wearing blue/Wolf Pack gear on Wolf Pack Fridays and the hire of Friends of the Pack GM Clutts to assist with NIL efforts. Construction on the Lannes basketball building will begin in June and the Cashell Fieldhouse locker room project should wrap up this summer. A combined $7M is still needed for the two projects. On the football season tickets front, Rempe says less than 100 tickets remain to move to reach last year’s number and “we’re spending a lot of time figuring out how to ensure the gameday experience is exceptional.” (link)

Louisville AD Heird has talked to Cardinals Baseball HC McDonnell after comments last week called into question the department’s commitment to McDonnell’s program. Heird: “Dan and I have touched base on a number of topics this week. He’s an incredible coach who’s built an incredible program. We’re going to work hard and we’re committed to making sure he has what he needs to compete for championships.” (link)

Kansas State baseball is surging toward the postseason, but an RPI of 55 as of this morning may be its undoing. Wildcats HC Hughes has an idea: “If you’re tied to certain teams in certain regions, I’ve always said let’s take your worst four or five RPI games and let’s drop it from the resume for the calculations. Let’s not have those games count toward your resume. There are some lower Division I teams that don’t have the funds that are counting on programs like ours to help fund them by some of the guarantees that we provide. Now, we’re in a position where we won’t or can’t play those teams. They’ll hurt our RPI, and in turn, the RPI will end up hurting those programs, too.” (link)

UCF AD Mohajir will hire a new baseball HC as seven-year skipper Lovelady will not return. (link)

Former Syracuse women’s basketball HC Hillsman received $770K+ in severance pay following his resignation in 2021. With $1.29M in earnings that year, Hillsman was the fifth-highest paid among all SU employees. Orange football HC Babers, who pulled in just over $4M in 2021, topped the list, while former men’s basketball HC Boeheim ranked third at $2.8M. Chancellor Syverud’s fourth-place spot came with his $1.48M payday and AD Wildhack earned just over $1M, good for sixth-best. (link)

Connect/MB Sports’ Banker is joined by Insurance Protection Consultants Co-Founder Brookbank, who offers some insight on how the Transformation Committee and Modernization of Rules Subcommittee’s deregulation around insurance is affecting the marketplace, what campus leaders should be thinking about regarding insurance management, how insurance companies look at mental health from a policy-scripting standpoint and lots more. Brookbank also points out that some of the larger collectives are paying the premiums for student-athletes’ insurance policies, “and there’s no legislation out there that says that they cannot pay the premium for that right now. I think ultimately there will be some type of federal legislation out there dictating how premiums can be paid, what sources it can be paid from. It may include collectives. It may not include collectives. We have no idea.” Lots more to unpack in the full video on Connect. (link)

How about this approach from Auburn’s football recruiting department, which created a graphic identifying the Tigers as the only school in the SEC with a Buc-ee’s gas station. The message landed with 2024 Texas high school recruit Campbell, who is from Refugio,Texas, not far from the first Buc-ee’s in Clute, Texas, and his retweet of the graphic set the ball rolling. As you can imagine, Ole Miss football HC Kiffin pounced, having his graphics team mimic the message boasting the Chevron gas station in Oxford as the only one that sells chicken on a stick. USF HC Golesh bragged about the Bulls as the only school with an on-campus Publix grocery store. Good stuff. (link)

Illinois lawmakers voted to extend in-person betting on in-state college teams until July 1, 2024. PlayUSA’s Kredell: “Rep. Bob Rita pushed to add Illinois college betting to SB 98, which includes one-year extensions on various sunsets unrelated to gaming. There’s little doubt Gov. J.B. Pritzker will sign the bill extending the sunsets. Illinois athletic directors supported the extension.” (link)

The latest from Colorado AD George on a possible conference move for the Buffs: “You’ve got to believe about a third of what you see out there. We’re members of the Pac-12, we’re proud members of the Pac-12 and we’ve got to see where our media rights deal lands and where our conference goes. In a perfect world, we’d love to be in the Pac-12, but we also have to do what’s right for Colorado at the end of the day. We’ll evaluate things as we move forward.” George also says the football spring game netted a $200K profit, plus $132K in team store revenue, the most in program history. (link)

The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Zeigler writes that San Diego State’s exit fee to the Mountain West - should it depart for another conference - will double to $34M if the Aztecs don’t notify the league by June 30th. Aztecs President de la Torre: “This is going to be a tight deadline. There’s no question about it.” SDSU AD Wicker goes further: “We can’t pay the (extra) amount. Everyone is aware of that, so we’re continuing to have conversations about that. [...] We’re having conversations with people on a regular basis. Everyone knows our timeline as far as that payout to be playing somewhere in 2024.” Mountain West Commissioner Nevarez says the Aztecs could request a board review of the buyout amount, but, “Like any buyout clause in a coach’s contract or an employee’s contract, it’s intended to make sure we don’t take a step back, that we either make ourselves whole or invest it in expansion. All those factors need to be considered.” (link)

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Reardon offers some advice to freshly minted Rainbow Warriors AD Angelos, beginning with this: “You should take advantage of our unique TV window as much as possible.” Reardon also advises Angelos to look to promote from within rather than looking outside the state when it comes to hiring coaches. “When [former Football HC] Rolovich left, [outgoing AD Matlin] made the mistake of bringing in someone from outside when it wasn’t necessary. Don’t do that, Mr. Angelos. If a winning head football coach gets hired away by a bigger program, there’s a very good chance one of his coordinators — especially one who recruited a lot of young talent for a certain offense and knows how that offense works — is the right guy to replace him. There are always enough broken things to fix, so don’t mess with the ones that aren’t.” Next, Reardon submits: “Don’t push away June Jones and Rich Miano. They want to help you and they don’t want too much in return. … Find the sources of power and start making your connections.” (link)

The Athletic’s Ubben argues ACC members should fight to keep equal revenue distribution because “if the ACC is bound to splinter eventually, kowtowing to the conference’s power programs on this issue will do nothing to stop it. Other than securing the league’s long-term future, there’s no reason for the conference’s less valuable members to hand over money to the members that TV networks find more desirable. The problem is it won’t work.” To support his contention, Ubben points out the Big 12 two decades ago shared just 57% of its revenue equally at the behest of its biggest programs, namely Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas A&M and Texas, each of whom has since left the conference. In sum, Ubben concludes: “If Clemson, Florida State and Miami want to be in the ACC, they’ll be in the ACC. Unequal revenue sharing isn’t going to convince them the SEC or Big Ten isn’t worth the jump. Ceding to their demands isn’t a long-term solution. It’s just a path to hastening the ever-widening split between the haves and have-nots.” (link)

As it turns out, the father of a Cincinnati baseball student-athlete, Bert Neff, was the individual on the other end of calls with former Alabama HC Bohannon who placed bets on the Crimson Tide. The recent departures from the Bearcats staff were due to knowledge of the situation & a failure to report the improprieties. Per the reporting, the father had a relationship with Bohannon due to his involvement in prominent travel baseball club Indiana Elite. No new comments from the Crimson Tide or Neff. (link)

ESPN’s Medcalf examines what USC is doing in preparation for the arrival of incoming men’s basketball student-athlete Bronny James and notes the Trojans could “create a separate entrance for celebrities and other VIPs who want to watch Bronny” and “adjust security measures for players as general attendance increases.” Trojans Senior Assoc. AD/Chief Marketing Officer Kelley says ticket prices will also increase. “I know it's going to be hard to believe, but with or without Bronny, the prices were more than likely going to go up by a few percentage points just because that's just the nature of the business. Most teams are increasing their prices 2% to 3% annually. We've actually been flat for quite some time, and so we were going up in price just because the team has just gotten better. And you do add some notable name players." (link)

D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle sat down with Indiana Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications/Cuban Center Director Gray and IU Asst. Director of Marketing Stewart to discuss the growth of women’s basketball and how this past season has impacted the program from an NIL and fundraising standpoint. Gray and Stewart also break down the Hoosiers’ season ticket sales, marketing strategies, changes to the ticket structure and more. Stewart points out that marketing for women’s hoops has matured beyond the goal of just filling the stands or “gimmick” marketing. “I don’t think we have to do that anymore. I think we’re getting fans that are loyal, who want to come to the games, they enjoy being there, and so how do we then elevate and maximize their time when they’re there? … Now we’ve got them in the stands, how do we keep them entertained? We don’t have to do the gimmicks to try to get them there.” Gray explains there have also been operational changes, such as altering the traffic patterns and implementing reserved seating. “We’re making a lot of changes as it pertains to the women’s basketball program, and it’s important for us as a department to invest in that program.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. More from the Georgia Athletic Board meeting, where UGA AD Brooks addressed the recent spate of speeding-related arrests of Bulldogs football student-athletes: “I think just [as] you would as a parent, you want to look at every lever you can pull to try. There’s obviously disciplinary measures. There’s educational measures. We’re going to look to intensify all these efforts, because I don’t think it’s just one thing you do. There’s discipline. There’s education. And I think there are no shortage of things we’re going to keep doing to rectify this problem.” (link)

The Athletic’s Auerbach moderates a NACDA webinar celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander excellence in the industry. Panelists include Grand Canyon AD Boggs, Dartmouth AD Harrity, UC Riverside Men’s Basketball HC Magpayo and BYU Football HC Sitake. Boggs points out the industry is making progress with DEI efforts “in that it’s on everyone’s mind. It’s not seen as a negative thing, it’s a positive,” but “I think the challenge is that there’s not a one-size-fits-all definition for diversity. I think AAPI, sometimes we’re not perceived as underrepresented. Sometimes we’re not perceived as minorities, regardless of the number. As far as a solution to that, I don’t have one.” Harrity adds: “So often the assumption in my career has been almost like Asians are the model minority. You’re raised in an affluent area by doctors and lawyers and all that. I love my parents, that’s not what they were doing. … But I don’t want to have to say that because then it looks kind of self-promoting. I’ve had superiors who have literally made karate noises and said, ‘Wax on, wax off.’ It was so hurtful, and I just smiled and worked through it, but I was thinking that was so inappropriate and why did that person think that was okay?” Lots more perspective in the full conversation. From in front of the Law360 paywall: “The NCAA urged a California federal judge Wednesday to toss a proposed class action from former volunteer coaches who claim an association bylaw limiting the number of paid coaches Division I schools may hire amounts to illegal wage fixing, saying the group has failed to show how the rules caused them any injury… . “ (link)

More from Law360: “A California magistrate judge appeared open to trimming with leave to amend ex-University of San Francisco baseball players’ allegations that two former coaches created a sexually charged team environment, saying she is concerned the 129-page complaint is ‘too expansive’ and has been ‘blown up’ to include anything that’s possible to plead.” (link)
