Even more from NCAA President Charlie Baker’s Q&A with Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer for Collegiate Sports Connect at the 2025 NACDA Convention. Regarding the proposed governance structure, Baker remarks there is “genuine support” for a “simpler, flatter, less complicated governance model for Division I. I’m a health care and government guy. I’ve spent my whole career around very complicated decision-making models. I found the NCAA’s decision-making model in DI to be just ponderous. I mean, it took me a year just to figure out how it worked, and I had a day job there. It also made it possible for people because it was so complicated and so big to not have to own the decisions that get made, and that’s when you’re in really bad territory. So, I think there’s a fair amount of support for making it simpler, less complicated, flatter, smaller committees with identified responsibility for the folks that are on those committees and a bigger role for student-athletes.” Asked about concerns expressed by non-Power 4 schools related to the governance proposal, Baker notes that a lot of the leaders at P4 departments came from those schools. “This idea that you’re somehow born into the A4 is just not true. It’s an ecosystem, and like any other good ecosystem, you can tell when you look at the trajectories of the careers of a lot of the folks in key positions in those conferences, they're all over the place. They’re in DIII, they're in DII, they're in DI, they're not in A4, they started in A4, they end up moving to higher positions with more responsibility outside the A4. I think the math on this shows that somewhere around 80% of the key leaders – ADs, head football coaches, men’s basketball coaches, women’s basketball coaches, baseball coaches, softball coaches in the SEC – 80% of them had significant parts of their career outside the Power 5. I use the whole Power 5 for that.” Baker pegs that number at around 70% for Big Ten, ACC and Big 12. So, I sort of start with the premise that this idea that somehow there’s everybody else and the A4, that’s not the way it looks in terms of how the people who are in the A4 and work there got there.” Lots more. Lots from Florida State AD Michael Alford lately, including this comment last week to the FSU Board of Trustees about the new NIL Go: “We’ve already had people inserting agreements, and agreements have already come back denied.” Meanwhile, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger tweets: “The new NIL Go clearinghouse is up and running. Multiple third party NIL deals have been submitted and already approved by the clearinghouse, those familiar with the matter tell @YahooSports. One person described a player's deal as having been approved in a matter of minutes.” (link, link)

The Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi writes on UCF’s market positioning, arguing the Knights are used to stretching out a dollar & therefore better prepared to get a return on the infusion of cash from the Big 12: “To put it plainly: While some schools will need to scramble, cut and beg to fund this new mandate, UCF will simply carve out its share from this fresh windfall of Big 12 media money.” UCF AD Terry Mohajir chimes in: “We’re in a little better position because we’re getting some new money [from the Big 12] as opposed to some other programs that have a $20.5 million bill coming to their athletic department. [...] I know there are a lot of cynics, but I feel pretty good about it [the new system]. I have to look at it from an optimist’s standpoint. I feel like we’re on the right track. Is it perfect? No. But at this particular time, we need progress over perfection.” (link)

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart talks to BBN Tonight’s Maggie Davis about the potential for an entertainment district around football’s Kroger Field & specifically points to the Deer District near Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee as an example. Barnhart also touched on $36M worth of enhancements coming to Kroger Field: “Obviously, you have to continue to maintain and repair the stadium. For safety reasons, making sure that all the components, the stairwells, ramps, those kinds of things, that there’s not anything that’s going to put our patrons at risk, so that’s important. The other piece is just the fan amenities that allow us to bring new revenue streams, to be able to do some things differently in our suites, really, really important. Those are priorities. What things, what decisions do we make that allow us to create revenue streams or be more efficient, or make sure that we’re prioritizing our fan experiences the right way?” (link)

Oklahoma President Joseph Harroz told regents late last week that “I think we’re well prepared” for the House settlement. “Look, there's a lot of uncertainty and everybody knows that. And just because it’s settled, doesn’t mean it will stick. We have been gameplanning and working on really two scenarios: What if the House settlement sticks? Which is our hope. And then, if it doesn’t, what takes place next? … How do you adjust to these two scenarios and keep your budget in shape and still be competitive? We moved to the SEC, we said there are two things that matter to us — continue to not use student money for athletics and can we be in a position to win championships? That remains our intent… If the House sticks or not, moving to the SEC was absolutely essential for us. When you look at the distributions from it and the other benefits around being in the SEC… That move to the SEC was critical for us and puts us in a much more athletic position to adapt.” Harroz also highlighted the financial importance of the move to the SEC. “It’s like oxygen. How important is oxygen to you? Right? When you look at that move, there’s a lot of reasons for it. And a lot of people want to look at that distribution – it’s a huge thing. Where you really see the impact, even really to a greater degree, it’s in that football stadium being filled up with games being competitive and exciting. That’s an even bigger component of how we do. … Games that are in primetime, games that you want to watch, games that are exciting every year, games that are against the best teams in the country — that matters a lot.” (link)

Cal Chancellor Rich Lyons explains that in the wake of the House settlement, “while no decisions have been made about any increase in our own scholarship allocations going forward, I expect any adjustments from central funds to be minimal. … After considering the various trade-offs, I decided that we will participate in this new revenue-sharing model in order to provide our teams with the necessary investments and resources they need to excel. I have also decided that our campus contributions to the new revenue-sharing pool must be matched by incremental philanthropic support donated specifically for this purpose. To motivate and inspire this level of philanthropy, particularly in this transition year, I have committed to match gifts to our revenue-sharing pool up to a maximum of $6M for football, $1.5M for men’s basketball, and $500K for women’s basketball. The amount allotted to each team is a direct function of the revenue each currently produces, consistent with the revenue-sharing principle in the House Settlement.” Lyons goes on to note that “no single element of what we do has a greater, beneficial impact on alumni engagement than Intercollegiate Athletics, especially our football and basketball programs. Reasonable people can disagree on whether we get enough of what I refer to as ‘mission-advancing return’ on our investment in Athletics. But there is no question that the return is important to all that we do together. (We just, for example, received the largest gift ever to Athletics, $26M, from a donor who in the last couple years gave the largest gift ever to the Haas School). More from Lyons. (link)

The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman dives into the career of Murray State Baseball HC Dan Skirka, who, as an assistant coach at Murray, was passed over for the Racers’ HC job in 2014, but after four years as an assistant at Walters State (NJCAA), got hired back in Murray to lead the program in 2018. Two weeks after then-AD Allen Ward hired Skirka, Ward left for Abilene Christian. Skirka has worked for two interim ADs, former boss Kevin Saal and current Racers’ AD Nico Yantko. As recently as 2022, Skirka only had one paid assistant coach and expressed his concerns about the baseball program being under-resourced to Yantko when he took the AD job in August 2022. Yantko asked all coaches to divide their needs into three categories - one thing they needed at that moment, one thing they needed in 24 months and one thing they needed long term but had never felt empowered to request. For baseball, the athletic department added $750K to its operational budget over two years; hired two assistant coaches and updated the weight room. It repurposed space in the football stadium to provide a meeting area for Skirka and a team room for his players and now provides access to nutrition and recovery efforts for baseball players. There is also a new indoor hitting facility. Yantko observes: “We put Dan in a position to win. He’s the type of guy I want to invest in. We’re going to be a place that punches above our weight class.” Lots more. (link)

Army West Point AD Tom Theodorakis talks about his appointment to the role, telling Newsday’s Brian Heyman that “it’s very humbling. For me, at times, it’s overwhelming. And it’s not out of a sense of insecurity. It’s more out of a deep appreciation and understanding of what the role of director of athletics is to the United States Military Academy. Being an athlete is a really important concept and part of the mission to this institution. It’s really important in developing leaders of character and really important in developing second lieutenants. And that’s what these men and women are doing when they graduate. So to have a role in that, to work with coaches who are recruiting these men and women, to have the ability to get them an environment and an experience that they deserve, that they could develop, is really important to me in my responsibility. So it’s a lot. But I’ll tell you, it’s one that I certainly welcome and feels right.” Black Knights Women’s Soccer HC Tracy Chao tells Heyman that Theodorakis convened a big coaches and staff meeting to go over his short-term plans and notes: “A lot of it was just connecting, to be honest. He wanted to ensure that he was connecting with every admin, support staff, coach and their team. He scheduled a time to chat with every single team and he met with our women’s soccer team in the spring and just had a few minutes to be able to say, ‘Hey, this is who I am. My name is Tom Theodorakis, Theo for short. And I just want you to know that I’m here to support you.’ He just wants to ensure that he’s someone who’s recognizable to not only the coaches…but just to the cadet athletes. He makes it a really big emphasis on who’s your family, your spouses and kids and wants to make sure he’s a part of that. It’s not just, ‘I’m your AD.’” Full profile. (link)

More from Louisiana AD Brian Maggard. On the potential for widespread elimination of sports across the industry: “Who knows what’s going to happen in 10 years, but I don’t think anytime soon. The NCAA has interest in decreasing the number of sports sponsorships to remain in Division I. That will stay at 16. We don’t anticipate that dropping at all. For the foreseeable future, that regulation will stay in place.” Baseball and softball, Maggard continues, will remain a priority: “Those two sports will remain a very high priority for us — no different than football and men’s basketball. When you look at the historical success and passion toward our diamond sport programs, we absolutely have to continue to have them in the conversation each and every day as we talk about progressing, moving forward and remaining competitively successful.” (link)

San Diego State’s launch of the Student-Athlete Recruitment and Retention Fund is causing confusion and frustration among fans and donors, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler, who writes: “Frustration, because of ‘donor fatigue’ or as one fan put it bluntly on a chat board: ‘How many things do I have to contribute to?’ Confusion, because the SARRF sounds an awful lot like the MESA Foundation, the NIL collective that amassed close to $3M this season for, well, student-athlete recruitment and retention of the men’s basketball team.” MESA Foundation Founder Jeff Smith tells Zeigler: “It’s a recognition by the university that our dollars can do the exact same thing as their dollars through the athlete retention fund that doesn’t really have the ability to be up and running and be impactful just yet. If people make the mistake of believing that now that the school has the ability to participate in athlete compensation because of the House settlement, they no longer have to support through MESA, then all the work that’s been done with the program for the last three years will be for naught and all the concerns we’ve had about losing players in the offseason will become reality.” Zeigler notes that for the 2025-26 season, SDSU is not expected to provide revenue-sharing with basketball players, meaning that money will still come from MESA Foundation. “So why not put everything under one roof?” Smith explains: “At some point in the future, will there be a scenario where funds go to San Diego State’s athlete retention fund, or will they go to MESA and then to the athlete retention fund specific to basketball? Those are definitely possibilities. But for right now, what we’ve built is working and what we’ve built can’t change.” More from Zeigler. (link)

The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand shares a glimpse “inside Pat McAfee’s world” and reports the ESPN host has “mused with associates about starting his own, independent version of [College] GameDay, according to sources briefed on discussions. This does not appear to be happening, at least not now. But he is mercurial and can make big decisions seemingly on whims.” Marchand goes on to point out that McAfee “has essentially banned ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter from his program since March. … Sources said that the main issue stemmed from one incident. One afternoon, McAfee wanted Schefter on his program. Schefter was appearing on an ESPN2 free agency special and was unable to make it. Schefter, formerly a McAfee Show regular, has been banished ever since.” McAfee has had NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on the show instead. ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus says McAfee “and his show are thriving on ESPN. We are very pleased with the partnership. That said, in the nearly three years since Pat has brought his show to our platforms, we’ve continuously seen those out there that are seemingly obsessed with wanting to see Pat fail on ESPN. This rumor is just the latest example of that. Pat and his show continue to break the mold and reach new audiences, and we look forward to the continued success together.” Lots more. (link)

Late yesterday the NCAA released a 36-page question & answer guide to House settlement implementation. (link); Some key particulars as pointed out by Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger & others:
+ An example of the impact of student-athlete buyouts: “The $100,000 buyout must count against Institution B’s benefits cap allowance in the year in which it is paid to Institution A. Institution A may not increase its benefits cap allowance by $100,000 as a result of this buyout payment.”
+ “ If a student-athlete becomes ineligible to compete due to failing to satisfy an applicable progress-toward-degree requirement, the student-athlete shall become ineligible to receive additional payments or benefits on the date their ineligibility is officially certified by the appropriate institutional authority consistent with Bylaw 14.4.3.4.”
+ “All payments from an institution for a student-athlete’s NIL must count against the benefits cap. This includes payments from an institutional designee or contractor (e.g., multimedia rights holder) acting as agent, facilitator or administrator for a Participating Institution to make a payment to a student-athlete with funds that originate from or are provided by the institution.”
+ “An institution may provide a written offer regarding NIL or other additional benefits or payments on or after August 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school; however, the offer may not be signed until the applicable signing dates specified in Bylaw 13.02.13.”

New Michigan State AD J Batt’s contract in East Lansing is worth $12.6M over six years, which starts with base pay of $1.85M & increases by $100K annually. The Spartans will also pay Georgia Tech $2M in liquidated damages for their hire of Batt. Buyout terms, per Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “If Batt chooses to terminate the agreement early, he—or potentially his future employer—would be responsible for a buyout payment structured as follows: $5 million if the departure occurs within the first two years of the contract, $4 million in the third year, $3 million in the fourth year and $2 million in the fifth year. Conversely, should Michigan State terminate Batt without cause, the university would owe him 75% of his remaining base salary.” Batt’s deal is also the first to note he must “cooperate fully” with College Sports Commission investigations. UC San Diego will partner with Parker Executive Search for its hire of a new AD, per CollegeAD. (link)

Florida State AD Michael Alford expects to have the certificate of occupancy for Doak Campbell Stadium’s revamp by July 29th with the new video & ribbon boards completed a week earlier. As for the new football-only facility, September 5th is the target date for completion with full move-in later in the month. Alford on two features of the Doak Campbell upgrades that he believes are most notable: “One is going to be the walk through space. It’s so well thought out. All the position meeting rooms are around it. And it has a virtual reality wall all the way across the top. So when we get ready to play Clemson, linebackers can come out, walk through it. We put Clemson’s formations up. They go in motion, we go in motion. It is 100% virtual reality size of a football field walk through space. [...] The other fun part, going into the pool area, as you come out of the locker room, we call it the ‘car wash’ you have to get rinsed off so walking down the hall you’re going to have water shooting on you before you go and get into the pool.” (link, link, link)

More from Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock on key issues impacting the industry. Regarding rev-share contracts, Babcock says they do not include performance clauses “in this initial round. We wanted to be pretty basic in it. Some of these contracts may ultimately involve buyouts if a student-athlete leaves, but no, at this time, it was pretty straightforward, and if they transfer, obviously, the payments stop, but it is a new world order and getting used to it.” On NIL Go: “One thing we all agree on is if there’s not real teeth in the penalties, if there’s not real expediency, if that’s the right word, it’s not going to work. The penalties and the structure that we’ve heard do have some teeth, and I guess people could still find a way to cheat if they wanted, cash under the table or not turning in NIL deals, but if you find out about it and you turn people in, I feel a whole lot better about this group than I did the NCAA.” (link)
|
Cincinnati AD John Cunningham on the Bearcats’ sport sponsorship portfolio amid industry financial pressures: “I like our mix of sports. It makes sense for our institution. Every single one of our sports is sponsored by the Big 12. We have no intention of dropping a sport or making any changes for sport offerings. There are going to be significant financial pressures on every school across the country. We’re going to have to be smart against our spending but we like our mix of sports.” (link)

College baseball is entering a “new-look college sports ecosystem as a winner in the passage of the House settlement earlier this month,” according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy. South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati explains why: “Baseball is really the biggest example of a sport that’s kind of double dipping in this post-settlement world because you’re having to solve for [three things]. Where football [and basketball] is strictly the rev-share component of NIL, baseball is kind of all three – it’s traditional NIL, it’s rev-share and it’s ‘How fast can you add scholarships?’ and ‘How many?’” ABCA Executive Director Craig Keilitz suggests the influx of new scholarships works both ways: “A simple answer is, you’d think there’d be less parity [with Power Four schools funding more scholarships]. Then you look at this year’s NCAA Tournament, it’s probably as much parity as I’ve ever seen it. But with more scholarships means the better programs that have more money can offer more of the superstars. You look up and down – if it’s the SEC, the ACC, the Big 12 – they can gobble up more of those guys." Ole Miss AD Keith Carter puts it like this: “If NIL and rev share wasn’t a thing, yeah, [baseball coaches] would be like, ‘Holy cow, we’re going from 11.7 to 34. But now they’re like, ‘OK, that’s awesome, but essentially everybody is doing that because everybody’s going to, one way or another, have full-ride scholarships. Now, what’s the rev share look like? What’s the next step?” (link)

Florida’s 2025-26 budget is projected at $205M, an increase from the $180.8M of FY25. The YOY 13.4% increase surpasses the 13.2% rise in spending over the course of 2019 to 2024. A $2.4M increase in spending on the men’s basketball program represents a 20% increase in the team’s operating budget. Football operating expenses rose from $30M to $33M. There is a $12M increase in total sports operating revenue, led by ticket sales ($7M) and money from SEC television ($5M) generated primarily by football and men’s basketball. Every department and program was asked to reduce expenses by 5%. Of note from The Orlando Sentinel’s Edgar Thompson: “The Knight-Newhouse College Athletics Database tracked data showing accelerated spending since 2019. This includes a 63% budget increase at SEC rival Tennessee — from $143.765 million to $234.058 million in 2024. Alabama’s operating expenses rose 43% to $234.825 million, LSU increased 40% to $220.281 million and Georgia 39% to $241.843.” (link)

At the quarterly meeting with regents in March, UNLV reported a nearly $27M debt for athletics and, as such, the board did not approve the FY24 report. UNLV Interim President Chris Heavey said Friday the school is confident about its ability to balance the budget despite the changing landscape of college athletics. To do so, the Rebels are leaning on increased ticket sales, money from donors and up to $24.1M from the Mountain West after the university agreed to stay in the conference instead of leaving for the Pac-12. Heavey: “We have been working very hard to put in place a plan about how to make sure that we can have a sustainable level of institutional support in our athletics program. We think we’re on a sustainable trajectory, but it’s something that we’re evaluating on a continuous basis.” FY25 budget is projected to break even with $67M in revenue and expenses. (link)

U.S. Soccer CEO JT Batson talks with Sportico’s Luke Cyphers about the organization’s plans for the college game and explains: “The best 18- to 22-year-old soccer players in America are opting to play professionally now, and that shows the growth of the American soccer market. It also shows the opportunity evolving around college soccer – that it can become the best U-23 league in the world. … Most of the commercial energy and effort in college sports has been focused on football and men’s basketball. There’s nobody waking up thinking about how to drive revenue at any sense of scale for college soccer. And we think there are opportunities, if you look at this as a nationwide platform, to be able to drive new commercial value in a way the prior model didn’t allow for.” Batson goes on to observe that the upheaval in college sports gives soccer a chance to present a test case for a new era. “We’ve been in direct conversations with college presidents, with conference leaders, who are all very excited about soccer being able to help lead to a future model for a broad set of college sports. Everyone recognizes that status quo has its challenges.” Cyphers notes that others in the sport have suggested a new model could range from continued NCAA governance to an entity that eventually splits off completely from the association. While Batson stops short of espousing an immediate split, he remarks: “We’ve been doing a whole body of work around this at U.S. Soccer with all of our stakeholders for quite some time now, and one of the things that bubbled to the top of the priority list was, ‘What does the next generation of college sports look like, and college soccer in particular?’ Conceivably, the right thing for year one may be different than a future state of things.” (link)

Learfield President of Sports Properties Kim Damron talks with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about how a multimedia rights partnership must work moving forward and explains: “It has to be a partnership that actually extends [athletic departments’] staff and resources. And that's with everything from people power, from actually staffing NIL sellers, to content – which we have an Emmy Award-winning content team. And that content is the key way to tell the authentic story of student-athletes. And then technology. So I look at us as an extension of the athletics department and really working hand in hand with the team to drive the revenue and the authentic dealmaking.” As it relates to the newly ordered industry as a whole, Damron explains that Learfield’s focus is on “sharing best practices in this evolving new era. And that’s one of the benefits we can bring back is really what’s working, what’s not and being able to be innovative and continue to drive that innovation.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann: “The NCAA on Wednesday filed a petition to cancel the U.S. Marine Corps’ trademark registration of ‘Sousa’s March Mania,’ a phrase that names an annual tournament of 32 musical marches held from March into April. The petition was filed in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. The Marines have 40 days to answer the petition. The Marines applied for a trademark in April 2024, and the USPTO registered the mark last month. The registration is for ‘entertainment services’ and specifically ‘arranging and conducting of competitions in the field of marching band performances.’ The registration also covers ‘non-downloadable’ photos and videos of marching band performances. … As the NCAA sees it, Sousa’s March Mania is ‘confusingly similar to the March Madness Marks’ because it is ‘similar in appearance, sound, meaning, and commercial impression.’ The similarity in goods and services—both the NCAA and Marines host annual tournaments at the same time of the year—are likely to cause confusion, the NCAA asserts.” (link)
