Cal AD Jim Knowlton announces his retirement, effective July 1, and says: "It has been an incredible honor to serve at the University of California, Berkeley, the No. 1 public university in the country. The expectation of holistic excellence helps to drive everyone associated with the university, and our department is no exception. The combination of a world-class education, athletic excellence, an inclusive community, an awe-inspiring location and, most importantly, truly special people, make Cal a magnificent place to serve." Chancellor Rich Lyons also announced that he will use this period of transition to put in place a new leadership structure. He has appointed current Deputy ADs Jay Larson and Jenny Simon-O'Neill to be the new co-directors of Cal Athletics. (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner notes there is a financial component to resolve as “Knowlton was handed an eight-year contract extension in 2021…that paid Knowlton approximately $1M annually. Exactly how the Bears covered the remaining amount ($4M) is not known at this point. But according to the terms of his contract, Knowlton would be owed his full salary for the remaining years if terminated without cause.” Further, Wilner points out that moving forward, Bears Football HC Justin Wilcox will report to GM Ron Rivera, who reports to Lyons, and subsequently submits: “The search for a replacement — if there is one — could be tricky. In theory, the Bears need an athletic director who understands the shifting landscape of college athletics and recognizes the primacy of football. But qualified candidates could be hesitant to accept the position without the oversight that currently belongs to Rivera. (link, link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger shares an update on College Football Playoff expansion: “Commissioners are expected to get a presentation from CFP director Rich Clark this week during annual meetings (this year in Asheville). The presentation will focus on adjustments to the strength-of-schedule metric used by the selection committee. Clark and the CFP staff have spent the last several weeks studying ways to create data points - to be used in playoff selection - that are more heavily weighted on a team’s strength of schedule, even using outside mathematicians & data analysts to assist in the endeavor. The adjustments are seen as a step to maintaining the selection committee’s role in a playoff that incorporates a big number of at-large spots, such as the proposed 16-team 5 AQ + 11 at-large format. SEC officials have publicly encouraged such a change to the selection criteria. CFP expansion to 16 may hinge on the selection criteria change. SEC’s move toward an AQ-heavy format - B1G supports ‘4-4-2-2-1’ - was stymied as pushback, even from its coaches, shifted the league to a format with a bigger at-large pool - *if* selection criteria is adjusted.” (link)

AthleticDirectorU Co-Founder Jason Belzer sits down with Ohio State AD Ross Bjork and Sequence Equity Managing Partner Marcus Stroud at the 2025 NACDA Convention for a wide-ranging discussion on the future of Power 4 programs in a post-House settlement world. Stroud, a former Princeton football student-athlete, explains that his firm advises athletic departments to “look at it more as strategic capital and not traditional private equity because there's not a one-size-fits-all bucket. Every institution is different. Like Ross said, some schools are going to have a really hard time figuring out this $20.5M line item, some aren’t. So I think a lot of private equity firms get this mantra of, ‘We apply our operational playbook and we come in and we squeeze the margins and we reduce overhead and we replace certain staff members.’ That’s not going to be the case in collegiate athletics. It’s going to take a true partnership, true strategic capital to help create optimal outcomes for each institution uniquely, and that’s why it’s taken so long for this to be in play today.” If an athletic department were to engage with private equity, Bjork suggests a smart strategy would be to “park a lot of that money to the side to say let it grow, or if you have the ability to partner with somebody, do they help you grow that in a unique way?” Bjork points out that OSU generates over $250M in merchandise sales but nets just the licensing fees of 15-18%. “What if I went out and produced merchandise and my gross was $120M and I’m keeping half of that because I'm now producing it? Would you go out and invest in a merchandise company to sell Ohio State products? … I think you just have to be really strategic with this one-time capital to say how is it going to last long-term where the people 20, 30, 40 years from now go, ‘What they did back in 2025 was really smart.’” Full discussion on ADU. All 12 SWAC members have opted into the House Settlement, and the league will place no scholarship caps on sports the conference currently sponsors. Commissioner Charles McClelland: “This is undoubtedly a significant moment for the Southwestern Athletic Conference and our twelve member institutions. As we move forward into a new era of intercollegiate athletics, the Southwestern Athletic Conference remains steadfast in our commitment to provide our membership with the resources needed to positively impact our student-athletes academically and athletically.” (link); Hero Sports’ Sam Herder updates his list of conference House decisions: “From what I know and have reported: No scholarship caps: SWAC, Southland, CAA, OVC-Big South. Kept 63 equivalency scholarship cap: Big Sky, SoCon. Deciding this week: MVFC. Undecided as of last week: UAC. Opting out: Ivy League.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey says his sense is that athletic departments in the league are not looking at eliminating sports but notes the situation remains fluid: “At least in the Southeastern Conference — and we have to be aware that, as you have a $20M outflow from a revenue-sharing standpoint, that creates pressures. And you’ve seen stories about that pressure resulting in some changes to personnel, or maybe the way expenditures are overseen in athletic departments. What has been the topic of focus in our room is not reducing the sport opportunities. That’s speculated about. What I will say is there has to be a point where this revenue-sharing model and the third-party oversight sticks and is consistent. And we have that opportunity now. If it continues to grow, I think that’s an enormous threat to those Olympic sports, or the non-revenue sports.” (link)

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart has this to say about how the Wildcats will distribute revenue: “I think what people want to do is they want to get fixed numbers, and they want to say, ‘This is it.’ They draw hard lines. When you do that, it becomes really difficult for you to be flexible to whatever situation you may have in front of you. So, we’re going to be flexible to that, and we’re going to be looking at different ways that we can help each of our teams and we’ll get to a spot, and coaches will know.” Barnhart insists, however, that UK’s secrecy has little to do with maintaining a competitive advantage. “I think that the minute you start worrying about what everybody else is doing, that’s when you get into making decisions that aren’t best for you. … I don’t want to chase things. I just want people to and our staff and our folks to go, ‘OK, that works. We can make that work. We’re going to get through it. We’ll navigate that with you.’ And coaches talk, administrations talk, all that happens, but if you look over the course of what we’ve done, we’ve generally done our own thing. I don’t think we’ll be too dissimilar to that as we go forward. There’ll be some things that will look similar to what others have done. There’ll be some things that won’t look similar to what others have done. And I just think — and [President Eli] Capilouto and I have had many, many conversations about this – flexibility is critically important in these times. I think it’s critically important.” Barnhart also explains the Cats have yet to make a decision about whether to bring collectives and/or their functions in-house: “I think you’re going to see the next six to 12 months will be, one of, sort of a crystallization, so to speak, of our pathways. Where I think it’s been pretty murky and pretty cloudy, difficult to understand where everybody’s going, I think in the next year you’ll see some, it’ll become more clear.” (link)

Wichita State President Richard Muma told the state’s Board of Regents last month that the university was seeking a 3.5% increase in tuition at the university in part because WSU needs to use general university dollars to provide $3.5M in funding to WSU’s athletic department, according to the Lawrence Journal-World’s Chad Lawhorn, who points out the importance of athletics to the university: “WSU got national attention when its men’s basketball team made a run to the Final Four in 2013, and has a championship history in baseball with seven World Series appearances and a national championship that its fans desperately want to see revived. While the math likely doesn’t work for WSU to pay $20.5M to its student-athletes at any point in the foreseeable future, it likely will have to pay some money to attract enough talented athletes to keep some of its athletic dreams alive. That’s why its president ends up in front of the [Kansas] Board of Regents with a pitch that some would consider difficult: Approve a tuition increase, allow a sizable portion of that new money to be used to subsidize the athletic department, all at the same time that WSU will cut at least $7M from the general operating budget of the university. Approval of the request, though, was never in any real doubt. The Regents approved the tuition increase last week without raising any concerns about the athletic department component.” (link)

Tulsa is bringing back men’s golf as a varsity sport nine years after it was discontinued. Competition is slated to begin in the fall of 2026. The decision is supported by gifts from donors, including a “transformational leadership gift” from Tulsa alumni Sharon D. Prince and Robert P. "Bob" Prince. Golden Hurricane AD Justin Moore: "We are thrilled to be able to bring men's golf back to The University of Tulsa in a city and region recognized for its passion for the game and home to some of the nation's best golf courses. The generosity of our donors – including several alumni who first established the legacy of Tulsa men's golf – has allowed us to bring the program back and compete immediately for championships. … Although the endowment has been founded to bring back the program, we will need additional and continued philanthropic support to maintain the program in the years ahead and to ensure our student-athletes have a world-class experience while earning their UTulsa degrees.” (link)

The Georgia Tech Board of Trustees voted last week to approve the athletic department’s $159M budget for FY26, an increase from the FY25 budget of $137M. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chad Bishop notes that “Tech has seen a significant increase in athletic spending in recent years. The athletics budget was $127.9M for the fiscal year 2024, $105.2M in 2023 and $94.9M in 2022.” President Angel Cabrera during last week’s trustees meeting noted: “Just a few years ago our budget was hovering around $100M. We made a decision, the board made a decision, that we were going to invest and be competitive at the highest level.” (link)

General admission football season tickets at Norfolk State now cost $200, an 82% increase from $110 in 2024, according to HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither, who reports that “reserved seating, which was $130 last year, is expected to increase as well, though updated figures have not been released. Faculty and staff tickets previously priced at $100 are also likely to see an adjustment. … A portion of each ticket sold will now directly benefit Spartan student-athletes.” Spartans AD Melody Webb: “Our decision emphasizes Norfolk State’s commitment to our student-athletes. By adopting this model, we’re not only staying competitive—we’re helping our athletes thrive.” (link)

Dartmouth announces a renovation project for Rupert C. Thompson Arena, home of the men’s and women’s hockey teams. Specifically, the 11,050-square-foot renovation will provide both programs with new locker rooms, team lounges, sports medicine spaces, a weight room, a coaches suite, as well as a new donor and fan hospitality space on the concourse level. Big Green AD Mike Harrity: "This renovation will create a modern space to facilitate individual student-athlete development and team cohesion both on and off the ice. We're able to provide our teams with this enhancement because of the tremendous support from our alumni, the college, and the athletics and recreation department." The project is expected to be complete in time for the 2026 season. (link)

The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS), during its meeting in Indianapolis last week, discussed next steps following the NCAA Summit on Performance Technologies in Collegiate Athletics that was hosted May 1-2 by the Sport Science Institute. Topics discussed included: nomenclature (wearables vs. performance technology); impacts on student-athletes, including mental health; contemporary use trends; considerations for intent, transparency and privacy; planning, implementing and evaluating performance technologies, including involvement of sports medicine staff; performance technologies in data-informed and/or medical decision-making; and the evolving landscape of sports science and technology. CSMAS also supported modernizing the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program through methodological updates, expanding operational capabilities and introducing substudies. This modernization would bring the program in alignment with best practices in injury surveillance data analysis methodology globally. Updates are expected to enhance precision, improve utility and introduce substudies to address identified needs, membership interest and/or gaps in research literature. (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel & Kyle Bonagura report Texas State is the “heavy favorite” to receive a Pac-12 invite, noting that the “league is currently exploring making an offer in the upcoming weeks.” A Bobcats exit from the Sun Belt would currently cost $5M, a figure that increases to $10M come July 1. Beyond a potential Texas State addition, more conference growth looks to be tied to where media rights negotiations end up: “The finances from a new TV deal are expected to be below what the league's consultants pitched schools initially. In the wake of the initial flurry of schools going to the league, ESPN reported schools were shown projected revenue from a TV deal north of $10 million per school, but conditions have changed. That number projects under $10 million for the new deal starting in 2026 but is still expected to be more than those schools would have received had they remained in the Mountain West. The other financial variable is related to the buyouts for the five MW schools.” As for what the Sun Belt would do in response to a Texas State exit: “The Sun Belt's realignment strategy for years has been to double-down on regional rivalries, and Louisiana Tech would fall into that category. Western Kentucky would be attractive because of the program's strong history in football and long-standing success in men's basketball. It would have some support from schools in the East, but the early read is that Louisiana Tech is ahead.” More, including a potential addition of Tarleton State for Conference USA. (link)

SoCon Commissioner Michael Cross raised concerns about the yet-to-be-revealed financial charge associated with joining the College Sports Commission or to utilize Deloitte’s NIL Go clearing house: “None of those entities are doing their work for free, but there’s been no suggestion or clarity about where and how the costs and expenses to run these entities are going to be assigned. … Nobody would run a business this way, nobody would say: ‘Oh yeah, we’ll write you a blank check and send me the bill later.’” The SoCon has a 50-50 split with its schools opting into or out of the House settlement and Cross observes: “At our level, I don’t have anybody that’s going to go to $20.5 million, and that’s OK. It doesn’t prevent us from meeting on the playing field, it doesn’t prevent us from meeting on the basketball court. … All of our schools want to be competitive, they want to be competitive at the highest level, and they all operate within budgets, but the order of magnitude is different and understanding what those costs might be is a real factor in the decision-making.” On the options for generating new revenue between the defendant and on-defendant conferences, Cross notes: “Those dynamics haven’t changed (for non-defendant schools), the pie hasn’t grown, and we’re going to spend a lot more money for our slice of pie. And it isn’t going to look a whole lot different in size.” With the June 30 opt-in deadline looming, Cross: “There are legitimate questions. Get us some answers, and then give us some time to digest it. Don’t say, hey, you’ve got two weeks, I’m not saying we need six months, but geez, is 30 days with the Fourth of July intervening and everything else (going on) really that difficult? Is the world going to collapse if July 1 comes and goes and not everybody’s opted in yet? What’s the big deal? Nobody’s playing games until August.” More. (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken writes on the challenges of regulating the NIL landscape via the new NIL Go. Here’s the crux of his argument: “What if, for instance, an athlete strikes a deal with a booster and just … doesn’t report it to the clearinghouse? Will there truly be a mechanism to find it and police it? That was always the NCAA’s problem with enforcement: It was difficult, if not impossible, to compel cooperation without subpoena power. Though arbitration proceedings like the one outlined in the House settlement will provide some type of subpoena power, how far reaching will it be? Will its power vary by state? Will it truly be enforced? And if someone gets busted, will the school avoid penalties by claiming they didn’t know? If so, we’re kind of right back where we started. [...] And the whole thing about buyouts limiting transfers? What if agents just simply don’t allow their players to sign a contract that would truly limit their ability to change schools without repercussions for themselves or their new school? It’s not like athletic departments have done a great job negotiating those things when it comes to their own coaching contracts.” (link)

BYU AD Brian Santiago joins the BYU Sports Nation podcast and explains why he believes the House settlement is a strategic advantage for BYU: “I think it’s going to allow us to be in a space where doing things the BYU way, focusing on the mission, investing in these world-class student-athletes that are coming to BYU for all the right reasons, it takes a shift away from the money back to where it should be. … And I know people are like, ‘Wait, explain that [it takes a shift away from money].’ It allows us to focus, it kind of brings a cap into play where we have to be competitive, but what we can really do is just start focusing on preparing these young men and women to go change the world. That’s what gets me super excited about it. It’s a revenue-share model that we actually think works. We’re going to embrace it.” Santiago goes on to explain that while BYU will ensure football and men’s basketball are receiving the share of revenue they need, “we are all invested in all of our sports. There are a lot of universities saying over here in the Olympic sports, we’re only going to invest in these two or three sports. We’re going to invest in all of our sports. We’re going to spread it out because we want all of our student-athletes to feel the impact of this and give them an opportunity to chase their dreams and do it at a place that they love that aligns with where they want to be. … We’re perennial powerhouses across the country. Why wouldn’t we invest in these sports? We want to spread it out so that all the remaining resources go to all of our sports so that we can continue to invest at a high level, make sure that we're getting the right student-athletes coming to BYU.” (link)

Georgia AD Josh Brooks on the post-July 1 world: “We are in a strong position — ready not only to adapt, but to thrive in this new era of college sports. Our top priority remains unchanged: fulfilling the University of Georgia's mission of excellence in teaching and learning, while preserving and enhancing the student-athlete experience. … Our athletic staff has taken every step — big and small — to ensure we are positioned for success.” In late May, Brooks said of the Deloitte involvement: “Now we have them, so instead of us saying, 'Well, here's how I'm going to attack the guardrails,' let's try to work together and work within these guardrails to make it better. And in that process, we may all have to lose a battle here and there on what we think is better for us to win the war ultimately on what's better for the game and what's better for college athletics.” Bulldogs Football HC Kirby Smart: “We've been very honest with our guys and told them that they were free to go in the portal. Everybody's got a reduction of opportunities, so these kids that went in had very few places to go. So a lot of them have come back and looking for their opportunity to return.” Georgia plans to distribute revenue as follows: Football (75%), Men’s Basketball (15%), Women’s Basketball (5%) and the remaining 5% to “where deemed needed.” (link)

Kansas Chancellor Douglas Girod says it’s possible KU Athletics could pay a reduced rate for student-athlete tuition as one mechanism to aid the Jayhawks in the new industry financial framework. Other options could include campus absorbing expense items like maintenance & utilities: “All of that is what we are going to have to figure out because it is clear that they don’t have the budget to keep doing what they are doing.” As for if KU will offer the full $20.5M revenue cap in the first year, Girod provides context: “I don’t think we will get all the way there in that first year. We also are trying to maximize some of the other benefits.” (link)

On day two of SBJ’s Brand Innovation Summit in Chicago, Learfield EVP/Global Partnerships Shawn Hegan, 160/90 VP Trish Tulloch, Playfly Sports CEO Craig Sloan, Marriott International Managing VP/Marketing Mady Gill and Powerade VP/Brand Marketing Leah Macko spoke on the new era of college sports and the opportunities it brings to sports marketing. Sloan: “The need is clear and the alignment between the university and the athletic department is probably better than it’s been, at least in our history. There’s still a whole side of the house that is about the student athlete experience and compliance and all the things that still need to be managed very much in the same way managing their coaches.” Tulloch on the possibility of jersey patches in the NCAA: “I think Jersey patches are maybe coming, they’re not yet approved from the NCAA perspective, but coming, I think there’s probably some brands that would look at that in terms of an entry point into college in terms of building awareness.” Hegan on the world post-House settlement: “I look forward to some stability in this world of college athletics. And these changes need to take place, but in a world of uncertainty, that’s not always attracting brands to a place and into college athletics. It is an incredibly valuable platform, and we need to break down those, any barriers that would stand in the way of a brand considering coming in.” Macko quips: “Who’s vetting the deals, as a brand, how are we getting set up as a payer. Relying on 18-year-old athletes to put the deals in themselves, what could go wrong, lot of trust into these young athletes.” (link)

Maryville (DII) is expanding its facilities at the Maryville University Hockey Center, partly in hope of the school adding a Division I hockey program in the next two to three years. The Chesterfield Hockey Association owns and operates the rink, while Maryville uses it for its club teams. Maryville would own its portion of the expanded facility. The project is estimated to cost $5M and would serve as a home to the eventual D1 program, including locker rooms, training rooms, study spaces, coaches offices, a press box, and a lounge. Director of Hockey John Hogan: “At Maryville, we’ve been actively working toward the goal of bringing NCAA Division I hockey to our university for several years. We’re excited about the progress made, and look forward to taking important next steps in the coming months. The vision builds on the success of our five ACHA teams, which have laid a strong foundation for competitive hockey at Maryville. With strong support from the community, we believe we can turn this vision into a reality within the next 2-3 years. It’s an exciting time for Maryville and for hockey in our region.” (link)

Western Carolina held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of $37M in renovations to E.J. Whitmire Stadium, home of the Catamounts’ football team. The project includes a new press box and media center, coaches’ offices, player study spaces and a hospitality area called the “Western Skybox.” WCU Chancellor Kelli R. Brown: “This is just one piece of our broader vision to create opportunities for students, build our legacy and ensure the success of our athletics programs. We are taking a phased approach in much-needed and long-overdue upgrades to our athletics facilities, starting with these upgrades and featuring the flexibility for additional enhancements – not just here at Whitmire Stadium but across all of our athletics programs.” (link)
|
Ryan Sports Development CEO/prominent Northwestern supporter Pat Ryan Jr. talks about the decision to rebuild Ryan Field and notes the original idea was to just renovate the stadium, but doing so would have meant spending a lot of money on things that would enhance neither the fan nor the student-athlete experience. “So as we looked around the country and looked around the world and saw where things are going, we realized this is a 100-year decision. You really had to make a decision that would be a great decision for 100 years, not a decision that you appreciated at the time because it was a little bit cheaper but didn’t get you anywhere. That's how we ended up with what will really end up being the first NFL-type stadium because we’re a long way away from the 100-year old bowls that were the cutting-edge technology of the 1920s.” (link)
