ESPN’s move to direct-to-consumer (DTC) is expected to occur in two to three years, according to the New York Post’s Marchand. Key thoughts: “I’m really starting to think when ESPN moves to direct-to-consumer, it won’t mean the end of cable. The cable bundle is going in the wrong direction, but the big argument against ESPN for years has been that the viewer who doesn’t care about sports is paying for ESPN. At this point, a cable or YouTube TV bundle may start to look more appealing, even with a pure DTC option. Plus, with cable, you can toggle between channels much more easily than with apps. … There will be folks who drop cable for ESPN DTC. But how many? I really think the total demise of cable TV may not happen even in a couple of years when ESPN does make the move.” (link)

Frostburg State Asst. Professors Barrett and Farr write on “The perceived effectiveness of internally focused promotion tactics” geared towards DII students. Key findings: “To provide greatest return on investment, Division II college sport marketers should prioritize efforts to augment the game day experience to fulfill college students’ desire for entertainment and social value; not added monetary value. These marketing and promotion activities include tailgating and themed games – both charitable and non-charitable. […] Themed games also provide an opportunity to persuade and motivate college students to attend Division II athletic events. Importantly, themed games require the packaging of multiple marketing and promotion activities behind a single theme – including traditional incentives. […] College sport marketers at the Division II level should also prioritize their concession services at athletic events. Not only should Division II athletic events include concessions as a standard aspect of the game day service, but stadia and arena should look to diversify their offerings.” Full paper. (link)

The Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Rules Committee has proposed a clearer definition of what should be considered a bona fide competition in the sport. The committee members recommended eliminating non-collegiate athletes from participating in an official program of collegiate meets. However, those athletes would be allowed to compete in exhibition events conducted outside the meet program. For team diving competitions, the committee recommends each team consist of three divers from the same school; each diver would complete one-third of the prescribed list of six dives/two dives at any level; the team would complete one dive for every group; and several other criteria. Additionally, the committee approved an experimental rule for next season that allows coaches to review video after the 30-minute protest time expires. Other proposals include an optional rule to allow the use of underwater cameras for video review to confirm disqualification for swimming infractions; allowing the use of tape, kinesiology tape and compression sleeves to treat documented medical conditions; and deciding ties based on methods other than a swim-off, such as a coin toss, if agreed upon by both coaches. Morehouse and former Assoc. AD Thomas are the defendants in a lawsuit that alleges Thomas, who attended an event as a Morehouse employee at the time, shot an individual at the event leading to over $442K in medical costs. Criminal charges against Thomas were dismissed this week, with a judge ruling he acted in self defense. (link)

A recent study from the Economic Policy Institute indicates this year’s class of college graduates is entering a stronger labor market for young workers, as measured by lower unemployment and underemployment rates, than the year prior's graduating class. The youth unemployment rate for young people aged 16-24, hit 7.5% in March, a 70-year low, according to the study. The figure also reflects a downtick in the overall U.S. unemployment rate, which fell to 3.5% during the same period. (link)
