More from Gulf South Commissioner Matt Wilson’s Small College Conversation from the 2025 NCAA Convention on a number of topics including his involvement with the DII Think Tank last year: “I think it was valuable. I think the room was big, so it was difficult to think outside of traditional models and I think we're in a space where we've got to think outside traditional models and that may mean different things to different people. […] I do think that we did focus in on nomenclature, positioning, what the division's all about, some of those things which were important. I just think that the room was large for us to think about transformational ideas and so it felt like a half-in, half-out opportunity for us, but at the end of the day I think we identified some things that we can operationalize, that we can make happen which is important.” Wilson believes there needs to be either a shift in the role of the Management Council from just governance to governance and strategic thinking every other meeting or a greater role for the D2CCA can help fill a need. “The gap that we have in our governance structure is that we don't have a group that is responsible for strategically thinking about the division and changes that we need to proactively look at. I think that that responsibility often lies on the sport committees who are overwhelmed with selections and tournament brackets and and putting on great events within the governance structure, and then those of us that are outside the governance structure, it's hard to plug those ideas into it. So I don't think it's anybody's fault. I think the the criticism is that the bureaucracy of the association makes it difficult to do things.” If not the commissioners, Wilson believes there should be a new committee “designated for strategic thinking and strategic plan review and all those sort of things. I think that would be a fantastic group, even if it's an ad hoc group until we get over these hurdles that are facing higher ed and the association.” Full conversation on BOSCA. (link)

Young Harris urged the Georgia Court of Appeals on Tuesday to toss out an early decision in a contract battle with the Peach Belt Athletic Conference (PBAC) over the Mountain Lions’ departure at the end of the 2022-23 academic year arguing that the “enforceability is doubtful” of $240K in damages the league imposed on the school over its withdrawal. The PBAC originally filed a lawsuit back in January 2023 citing that Young Harris was required to “provide written notification of withdrawal at least two calendar years in advance of its effective date,” while failing to do so would result in an exit fee equal to twice the member initiation fee. Per a previous league release, Young Harris provided less than a year’s notice of its withdrawal, necessitating the $240K charge. More behind the Law360 paywall. (link)

Another House case appeal has hit the docket. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz: “Another group of female athletes who objected to the House-NCAA settlement has filed notice that they are appealing to the 9th Circuit. This group is represented, in part, by lawyers from a firm called EQUITY IX, LLC, which works on Title IX, gender equity and NIL matters.” (link); Here’s the full filing. (link)

The Sioux Falls Sports Authority and NSIC disclosed Wednesday that the 2025 NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Championship will return to the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D., for the second straight year. NSIC Commissioner Erin Lind: “We look forward to another year of working with the Sioux Falls Sports Authority and the Sanford Pentagon staffs to host this elite event. Hosting back-to-back years in a first-class facility will only enhance the experience provided to the student-athletes, coaches and fans.” (link)

Three more eligibility rule lawsuits were filed against the NCAA over the past few days, including two on Friday and one on Monday, according to Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich, who notes: “By my count, including Pavia, that makes 23 different suits involving 26 different players in 21 different courts, 14 of which are still ongoing. … One of the two filed Friday was by Rylen Walker, a men's basketball player at Miles College. A former JUCO player like Pavia, he challenges the fact that the Pavia blanket waiver has not been applied at the Division II level. Of note, Walker points out that he asked Miles College to file a waiver request on his behalf, but they say they can't because he's exhausted his eligibility and isn't on the roster. So another attack on the fact that the NCAA doesn't let athletes file their own waiver requests. (link)

The CIAA announced Wednesday that its annual Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournament will remain in Baltimore, Md., through 2029. The decision builds on the event’s five-year run in “Charm City,” which first hosted the tournament virtually in 2021 and in-person, beginning in 2022. Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams Parker: “Baltimore’s leadership continues to demonstrate the importance of the CIAA to its community and culture. They understand and value the event’s impact, one that extends far beyond the game. It’s inspiring to be seen, heard, and celebrated at such a pivotal time. We look forward to the continued opportunity to showcase our incredible talent and member schools in Charm City through 2029!" This marks the first long-term partnership since the tournament’s move following the 2019-20 season from Charlotte, N.C., where it had been held for over a decade. (link)
