The D1.dossier for USF is available for those interested in leading the Bulls. Save time and effort in the research process and most importantly, win the job. Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller on his use of a D1.dossier: “The D1.dossier was extremely helpful for the interview process by identifying the key stakeholders and providing the current landscape at Coastal Carolina. It saved me a tremendous amount of time from having to research and gather it myself. I appreciate the service and highly recommend it to my counterparts around the country.” (link)

Florida AD Scott Stricklin provides perspective on a number of key industry issues, starting with the rate of change: “People crave certainty. And that's really an impossible thing to give people. They will settle for clarity, but even clarity has been hard to provide at times. It's really not even starting with '21, but it goes back to Covid. If you think about it, college athletics has been on a kind of six-month spin cycle. Things evolve like every six months, seemingly in the last five years.” On the House settlement: “My sense is that it has a chance, for the first time since '21, to have some kind of consistent way to the way we operate relative to the benefits we provide athletes. What's different about this is this new system is going to be a part of a federal-court approved plan and approach, a settlement that both sides agreed to what the structure would look like, both sides meaning the plaintiffs, being the athletes, and the defendants, being the conferences and the NCAA. That hasn't existed up to this point. The enforcement piece is obviously going to be a really key component to making sure this thing works as envisioned.” Also, on roster limits & revenue sharing: “We will have the max on our rosters that are allowed. We won't be scholarshipping every roster, but we'll probably add over 50 new scholarships to over what we have done traditionally. [Stricklin later clarified that UF's scholarship total will increase from around 265 to 320 and can be split to impact more student-athletes.]” Lots more. (link)

Ole Miss doesn’t plan to cut any sports as AD Keith Carter explains: “The way we looked at it, really from day one, the way I talked to our staff and coaches about it was certainly with rev share and just the math problem that you have to solve with $20.5 million coming on your budget, you got to find new revenues, of course, and we’ve worked hard at that and we’ll continue to do that. But you also need to take a look at your operation and you need to become more efficient and you need to cut some things and, you know, try to cut some costs there. In the cost-cutting exercise from A to Z, Z would be cutting sports. Very, very, very last option. We’re nowhere close to that right now. It’s not even in the discussion.” (link)

Tarleton State AD Steve Uryasz joins the Big Mountain podcast and covers several topics, including upgrades to the football stadium, about which he notes: “We don’t need any more seating in Memorial Stadium. What we need is premium seating and revenue-generation opportunities. … I think one of the greatest examples within our own state here is what they did down at Baylor. So Baylor, compared to their previous stadium, holds, what, about 45,000 now? It’s smaller but has all the suites in the clubs and the loge boxes and those types of things. … Those are the things that generate the revenue necessary for rev-share, for growth, in order for us to compete at the highest level.” Regarding the future of DI governance, Uryasz points out there’s already been a bifurcation between the Power 4 and everyone else, “and you have to understand that that is the way it is. And we have to figure out where we fit and what we want to do and where we want to compete. We have, as an institution, never hid the fact that our ultimate goal at some point – don't know when – is to be an FBS Institution, and that still remains our goal. But right now what we're doing is trying to do everything we can to win at the FCS level, to put our stake in it.” Full podcast. (link)

Northern Iowa AD Megan Franklin explains that UNI offers student-athletes a “relationship-based experience,” adding: “Our coaches are so good because they’re transformational coaches. They develop student-athletes, provide them the athletic experience of their dreams, depending on what that student-athlete wants to achieve. But they are also loved. … Now student-athletes will leave for decisions that may have fiscal reasons, but it will be the predominant reason. So, culture wins. It does, and that’s what we are prideful about here.” While the Panthers are opting into the House settlement, Franklin notes there are “pros and cons with change. Yeah, we’re trying to be as optimistic as we can. I do think, like I say, Northern Iowa is in position with some really wonderful infrastructure to help us. … My challenge back to our fans was, when are you going to sign your national letter of intent? It’s time to join the Panther Scholarship Club. It’s time to get your season tickets. That’s your commitment. … That was my message, and I believe it was met with a fair handshake.” (link)

Former Sun Belt/WAC Commissioner Karl Benson tells JohnCanzano.com’s eponym that “I can tell you exactly what the Pac-12 is going to say if they add [Texas State]. They’re going to say that Texas State has the potential to be the next Boise State. I said the same thing when I added them to the WAC and again when I added them to the Sun Belt. It never happened – but maybe this is the time.” As for who else could possibly join the league, Canzano notes that UTSA “comes up frequently in conversations I’ve had with sources,” while Rice “gets mentioned a little, too.” However, one conference source tells Canzano that it’s “looking like one all-sport addition, most likely.” Canzano also notes that “the Pac-12 presidents aren’t happy that the Texas State stuff has gone public, but the Bobcats are a logical, common-sense choice given the bottom line they offer. Campus presidents in the Pac-12 weren’t thrilled when I reported two weeks ago that Texas State had slipped in front of UNLV and was shaping up to be the Pac-12’s next likely all-sports addition. … Some Pac-12 presidents believe the source of the leak was conference athletic directors, who are understandably eager to get the expansion piece done. The ADs find themselves in more frequent contact with media, fans, and boosters than presidents.” (link)

In the event Texas State leaves for the Pac 12, what does Louisiana Monroe AD John Hartwell think of the possibility of Louisiana Tech joining the Sun Belt? Hartwell: “I think it’s an outstanding opportunity, I don’t think it’s a slam dunk yet. Things are trending in that direction. … I would say they are the odds on favorite at this point, if the dominoes fall like it looks like, they very well could.” (link)

Cal Poly will not reinstate its swimming and diving programs. A three-month fundraising campaign led by swimming and diving student-athletes raised nearly $9M, but fell short of the $15M threshold Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong required to save the program. A letter from Armstrong this week: “This is an unfortunate reality given the approved NCAA House settlement, state budget and the tenuous situation moving forward for both the state and the NCAA. I want to reiterate that the significant and unequitable changes in the NCAA and the House settlement (and new organizations resulting from this settlement) had an impact that weighed heavily in this decision.” (link)

The Athletic’s Justin Williams and Grace Raynor take a look at how the Trump administration’s travel bans will impact international student-athletes and point out that “as written, the U.S. travel restrictions, mostly for countries in Africa and the Middle East, should directly impact only a small percentage of current international college athletes. The most recent NCAA data estimates there were roughly 23K international college athletes across all divisions in 2023-24. That equals about 4% of all college athletes, only a sliver of whom hail from the 19 restricted countries. The NCAA’s data on athlete country of origin, last updated in 2022, counted athletes from 12 of the 19 impacted countries, but only two produced more than a dozen athletes that year: Haiti (24) and Venezuela (126). Canada, for comparison, had the most international students with 4,408. … Because of the caveats for existing visa holders, the international college athletes most likely to be impeded by the ban would be those who need a U.S. visa, either new athletes or current athletes from the banned countries who might have traveled home for the summer on an expired visa.” As such, Green and Spiegel immigration attorney Ksenia Maiorova tells The Athletic that “I do not want my international athletes traveling abroad unless it’s a true emergency. It’s just not worth the risk. … In addition to the bans, you have to consider that a student-athlete could just be denied entry on a valid visa even if there is no ban.” More. (link)

In this episode of The Career Hustle, College.town’s Kristen Eargle is joined by Georgia Executive Assoc. AD of Development Ford Williams, who discusses the skills that are vital in today's landscape, managing large fundraising projects, what he's tracking as the industry shifts and lots more. Williams observes that the “workforce is shifting in collegiate athletics” and explains that “we’ve hired some really great young people lately over some people that have been higher-experienced because we've seen some turnover from that standpoint of people looking for the next opportunity. We just want to be a landing place for people where they can come in and hone their craft and really have as much success as they want to have at the University of Georgia if they're willing to put the time, effort and energy in. So really trying to find those individuals that want to be here and want to be a part of it is really what the key to success is as far as I’m concerned.” Given the changes within the industry, Williams takes the building-the-plane-while-flying-it metaphor a step further and says: “Sometimes we’re inventing the parts to the plane, and that can be a really, really big challenge, but I do believe the model that we build and continue to progress with, the ability to be nimble allows us to shift with the landscape and how things go. I think trying to manage where the development world is at the end of the day it's about revenue and being able to bring value to your institution and so I tell our team all the time and staff meetings we want to be the problem-solvers for athletic department whether it's a number we’re tracked on or it’s a new number we’re generating that exists and we haven’t leveraged before, how are we bringing value in terms of actual dollars and value in terms of the resources that help the machine move forward.” Lots more. Tennessee Tech hires former Montana State Deputy AD for External Operations Casey Fox as its new AD. Fox: "I'm a competitive person, and when I came to Tech, I saw that same competitive drive on this campus. From strong community and administrative support to engaged students and first-class coaches, this is a university with all the right tools in place for nationally competitive sports programs. I have seen how Tech has already leveled up in recent years, and I am excited for the opportunity to further elevate and transform Golden Eagle athletics." Collegiate Sports Associates assisted Tennessee Tech with the process. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “commissioners received the latest version of the new NCAA governance model on Wednesday. The primary piece of the proposal – 65% weighted voting powers for A4 – remains unchanged. The DI Board of Directors will discuss at their meeting next week but no action is expected yet. The 65% percent voting powers provides the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12 and ACC control over legislation and rule-making in certain aspects – if they all agree. In this model, three of the four voting in the same way fails to reach the 51% threshold – a key point. (link); Also from Dellenger: “Something emerging at DI commissioners meetings: The annual cost to operate the College Sports Commission – and NIL Go – remains unclear. Non-A4 commissioners have been told that schools will be assessed annually and to prepare for something in the neighborhood of $50K. The power leagues are footing the bill for the implementation of the CSC, clearinghouse and cap management system. But schools, as well as NCAA headquarters, are expected to be responsible financially, in some form, for supporting the on-going costs of operation.” (link)

Clemson AD Graham Neff and Washington AD Pat Chun sit down with Sports Illustrated's Bryan Fischer from the College.town set at the 2025 NACDA Convention to share their reactions to the House settlement, as well as weigh in on driving revenue-generation opportunities and the College Football Playoff structure. Both ADs are optimistic the enforcement mechanism attached to the House settlement will be effective, with Chun saying: “Everybody understands what the stakes are, and they’re at the highest they’ve ever been. I think we all recognize nobody wants to continue to exist in an unregulated, unsustainable environment. Yeah, there are schools that can be successful in an unregulated environment, but that’s maybe 1% of our environment. And maybe pick or choose a sport based on who their donors are, but for the greater good, our student-athletes deserve to understand what the playing field looks like…and it needs to be equal relative to all the institutions in all 50 states.” Chun adds: “Show me any type of company or organization or system that survives being unregulated. It does not happen in this country.” When it comes to the strategy behind revenue sharing, Neff explains that “for us, it’s not just doing our multimedia rights in house. Probably our biggest vertical is that from a sales and sponsorship standpoint, but it's also the alignment of all of our other external and commercial-facing entities and video production, content creation, licensing. We’re working on our ticketing and ticket process. … Not only those activities, but then having the umbrella of Clemson Ventures as a company, so to speak, where now all those staff members have that disposition toward generating revenue.” Full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. Virginia AD Carla Williams remarked in an introductory press conference for Baseball HC Chris Pollard that UVA is “ecstatic for the [House] settlement because it is our best chance at stabilizing the industry. And so, if we can, as an industry, agree to the rules, and there’s a separate commission that’s going to enforce the rules, then I am very optimistic about the process. It gives places like Virginia, where it is a harder path, it gives us a fighting chance to compete in this new era.” When asked about coaching turnover among the football, baseball and men’s basketball programs in recent years, Williams explained: “What is happening right now, over the last 3-4 years in college athletics, has never happened before. So, change, for us, we see it as opportunity. … So I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing university and hire people like Chris Pollard and Ryan Odom.” (link)

South Dakota AD Jon Schemmel explains why the Coyotes reversed course and ultimately decided to opt into the House settlement. "Initially, when they talked about the settlement terms, there were no exceptions for grandfathering in rosters. So what that meant for us if we did opt in is we would essentially be immediately in the position to cut at least 50 student-athletes; I think 52 was the math that we did. ... That was our biggest hangup the whole time, was just the roster limits. Not only for athletics and not wanting to cut kids that don't deserve to be cut but also enrollment. Fifty kids is a lot of kids on a campus these days. ...When the final settlement came through and we knew we could grandfather in, not only then could we grandfather those student-athletes in, but if you missed the date to opt in, you cannot -- you're not allowed to grandfather in. So the best way to protect our student-athletes right now was to opt in. We were never going to opt in if we had to cut anyone.” Will the House settlement impact the number of sports USD offers? “Short-term for USD, no. And I do think confidently, and I hope I, long-term. … I think nationally it’s a little different perspective right now. I did some counting over the last couple weeks, and I think we're up to like 38, 39, maybe more than that, Division I programs that have been cut across the country. I do expect that number to continue to grow. The only thing that would really put us in a tough spot is all of a sudden we have a sport that within our region we have no one to compete against. But you’re talking about a whole other can of worms and a downward spiral that we just haven’t seen. I think within the Summit League and the Missouri Valley Football conferences, these schools are committed to carrying these sports.” More from Schemmel. (link, link)

Montana AD Kent Haslam explains roster limits were a big part of the reason the Grizzlies chose not to opt into the House settlement at this time. “We have soccer and softball both that are potentially going to have rosters above what the roster limit will be from the House settlement. And then building the infrastructure and getting it in place so that we can make sure we can take advantage of it. We fully intend to opt in for the 2026-27 academic year, but we need to get into place how we’re going to rev-share, get personnel on board that can help us manage all those things, generate the revenue we need and then build budgets on how that revenue gets shared back to student-athletes. I like the ideas of opting in, and if the roster piece had not been a part of it, I feel like we would’ve opted in right from the beginning.” (link)

The Nevada Board of Regents on Friday gave final approval for the construction of an indoor Fieldhouse and the resurfacing of two turf fields that are a part of a projected $32M facility improvement for the Wolf Pack. Nevada SportsNet’s Chris Murray notes the project will be paid for as part of a 30-year lease with an estimated annual payment of around $2.1M. Wolf Pack AD Stephanie Rempe: “Today’s decision by the Board of Regents will have a momentous positive effect on the University of Nevada. We are grateful for the support and action of the Regents, President [Brian] Sandoval, and ASUN in making this possible. This long-awaited indoor facility is essential for the long-term success and championship potential of our programs and student athletes. It will elevate our department, our University, and our community, and I am excited for Nevada’s College Town to come together with pride and purpose to help us make this transformational project a reality.” (link)

Michigan Representative Joe Tate (D-2) introduced House Bill 4643 on Monday, which aims to ensure that athletic organizations and "postsecondary educational institutions" cannot block or prevent student athletes from receiving compensation in the form of NIL. More specifically, Tate’s bill would prohibit colleges and universities from enforcing any rule that limits a student’s right to earn NIL compensation; ban athletic associations or conferences from retaliating against athletes, agents, institutions or third parties involved in NIL agreements; and challenge the legality of third-party NIL approval processes that limit market-based compensation. A former Michigan State offensive lineman, Tate says: “Student-athletes deserve the same basic rights as any other student – the ability to profit from their own talent, image and effort. I’ve lived the student-athlete experience. I know the dedication, sacrifices and challenges that come with balancing academics, athletics and personal growth. My legislation guarantees student athletes can pursue those opportunities without fear of punishment from their schools or sports organizations.” Also notable: Tate has plans to run for the U.S. Senate in May. The Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport has released its 2025 Women in College Coaching Report Card: NCAA Division-I Select Institutions in conjunction with the University of Minnesota. The 2024-25 dataset “included head coaches of women's teams at 94 institutions of higher education in the United States that were current members of NCAA Division I conferences.” Zero coaching positions were unfilled at the time of data collection, resulting in 1056 head coaching positions used for data analyses. Four teams were added and zero programs were cut in the Select Seven (American, Big Ten, Pac-12, ACC, Big East, Big 12 and SEC) since the last report. “The percentage of women's teams with women head coaches in Select Seven NCAA DI institutions went up to 47.7% in 2024-25, and increased 0.3% from 2023-24 (47.4%). The percentage has increased for the last 12 years. A steady incline is evident; however, growth has slowed compared to the previous two years. If growth continues at the current rate, achieving 50% of women head coaches of women’s teams is possible within eight years.” The report also states that “less than half of head coach positional vacancies for Select Seven women’s Division I teams (54 of 119, 45.4%) were filled by women, resulting in 65 missed opportunities to hire a woman. Since 2013, a majority (54.4%) of all head coach hires have been men, but more recently, women are being hired at higher rates.” As for institutional grades, the following received an A: UCF, Michigan State, Cincinnati, Ole Miss, Michigan, Penn State, Washington, UCLA and Cal.
