Oregon AD Rob Mullens is receiving a three-year extension through June 2033, pending approval by the UO Board of Trustees. Under the terms of the extension, Mullens’ pay will increase from $980K plus deferred compensation, performance and retention bonuses — which he was receiving through June 2030 under his existing contract — to a $1.15M salary with $50K annual increases, plus $100K in deferred compensation and performance and retention bonuses. According to The Oregonian’s James Crepea, Mullens will become the eighth highest paid AD in the Big Ten and among the top 20 nationally based on 2024 data. Also from Crepea: “Mullens will also receive a bonus ranging from $10K to $25K based on Oregon finishing in the top 50 in the (Learfield) Directors’ Cup standings. His bonus for academic performance remains $50K if the department has a four-year Academic Progress Rate of at least 985. The buyout Oregon would owe Mullens if it were to fire him before the end of the contract remains all of his remaining base salary plus 80% of his cumulative remaining retention bonuses, so long as the termination occurs before July 1, 2030.” (link)

Wisconsin and its NIL collective filed a complaint in state circuit court on Friday against Miami (FL) for alleged tortious interference involving the transfer of football student-athlete Xavier Lucas, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who further explains: “In a first-of-its-kind and, perhaps, a precedent-setting move,” Wisconsin is seeking unspecified financial damages, transparency and accountability from Miami for allegedly interfering with a binding revenue-share contract between Wisconsin and Lucas. “Wisconsin claims that Miami communicated with Lucas. ‘Knowingly inducing’ him, despite knowing he had entered a contract with the school, something it terms as ‘intentional’ interference that ‘was not justified or privileged’ and caused Lucas to ‘breach’ his contract.” From the suit: “Miami interfered with UW-Madison’s relationship with Student-Athlete A (Lucas) by making impermissible contact with him and engaging in tampering.” UW tells Dellenger that it “reluctantly” filed the suit but is “committed to ensuring integrity and fundamental fairness in the evolving landscape of college athletics.” The Big Ten has also released a statement in support of the suit: “We stand by our position that respecting and enforcing contractual obligations is essential to maintaining a level playing field. In addition to our legal action, we will continue to be proactive to protect the interests of our student-athletes, our program and the broader collegiate athletics community.” (link)

More from the Big Ten on the lawsuit via On3’s Pete Nakos: "The Big Ten Conference is aware of the litigation recently filed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison against the University of Miami and is supportive of UW-Madison's position. As alleged, the University of Miami knowingly ignored contractual obligations and disregarded the principle of competitive equity that is fundamental to collegiate athletics. The Big Ten Conference believes that the University of Miami's actions are irreconcilable with a sustainable college sports framework and is supportive of UW-Madison's efforts to preserve." (link)

Conference commissioners this week once again discussed making Week Zero a permanent playing date for football teams, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who reports: “FBS leaders held more conversations on the long-discussed concept during the annual three-day gathering of Division I conference commissioners” in Asheville this week. “Commissioners expect the conversation to continue in the coming weeks and months. While there is growing support for the move, no formal proposal has been introduced. That’s not the case for FCS. The division is expected to formalize a proposal that permits schools to begin playing on Week Zero – a decision that would add a 12th regular season game to the schedule starting in 2026.” For FBS leaders, the conversation is more complex, as SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey tells Dellenger: “My view is we should have a consistent start date. The adage is, teams make their most substantial improvement between Games 1 and 2. I think we should have a consistent start date. Labor Day weekend has been a good start date for college football. The fact we are taking another look at it could be interesting. I’m not opposed to that. I want to make sure it’s a broad view of the issues and not something narrow.” American Commissioner Tim Pernetti adds that establishing a consistent start date would help eliminate some of the red tape that comes with making special Week 0 requests: “We had a good discussion about the calendar and a uniform start date for FBS instead of continuing to deal with waiver requests, case by case. A consistent start date is a key element to the future of FBS.” (link)

More from Florida AD Scott Stricklin who Q&As with Gators Senior Writer Scott Carter about the latest changes in the industry and says that for revenue-sharing to work, one thing he wants to know is: “Is there swift justice for [breaking the agreement?] I think we're all hoping everybody plays by the rules, but understanding human nature, there's probably some people that are going to test that. If someone is found circumventing the cap, there's got to be swift justice. I don't know Bryan Seeley, but I'm encouraged by his background, having been part of enforcement at the Major League Baseball level. Even some of the decisions that he has handed down have been pretty punitive and have sent strong messages.” Stricklin also talks about reducing expenses by 5% across all departments for the FY26 budget: “We tightened our belts in some areas across the department. And then we have a lot of services that we have paid the university for, and there's some of those that we are reassessing: could we come up with a way the university could give us a break on some of those [parking lots, utility costs, etc.].” More. Alabama AD Greg Byrne talks about the Crimson Tide’s approach to sharing revenue: “We have taken the approach that it’s based off of revenue generation. We think that’s a solid approach. We think that’s one that makes sense for our program. As you’ve heard me say many times, football is the engine that pulls the train. At the same time too, our two sports that turn a profit are football and men’s basketball. So they will have the highest percentage of that rev-share and then we’re splitting up the remaining dollars with our sports who are ticketed. We have four sports who are ticketed – softball, baseball, gymnastics and women’s basketball. Those are the six sports that will have some type of rev-share. … I’ve heard all over the yard how schools are doing it, and how many sports. I know one we compete against all the time is only doing three sports. I know that some schools are doing a little bit for everything. I’m not sure how much of a difference that will make at the end of the day when you just carve off a small sliver for a sport, but we have a plan. I’ve told our coaches it’s fluid. We’re doing the best we can to make decisions with the information that we have right now.” (link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker joins the 3 Guys Before The Game podcast to discuss the latest developments in college sports and how the Mountaineers are navigating them. Baker explains that WVU about a year ago brought in Huron Consulting to conduct a thorough analysis of the athletic department to present to the board. The selection of Huron through the RFP process was made in part because Huron is not an “athletics traditional-based firm. We wanted the data to be unimpeachable.” The data confirmed much of what WVU already believed, including: “We do a really good job of raising money when compared to peer institutions, especially when you factor in that we have less premium seating than other institutions. If we had more premium seating, that's going to drive donations, it’s going to drive what you require annually, but also it's going to drive people trying to get in and jockeying for position to get their hands on” that inventory. “The other thing it found is that our campus investment – the average Big 12 campus investment at this point is somewhere…around $40M. We’re way less than 25% of that. So, I do think that was eye-opening for the board.” As it relates to funding for the House settlement, Baker notes WVU will increase revenues and is “down the path on one naming rights opportunity that’s significant, a seven-figure opportunity.” Lots more. USF has launched Bulls Athletic Properties, a new independent division that will oversee key revenue-generating functions, including ticketing, corporate partnerships, media rights, and marquee venue agreements. It will also work in close coordination with athletics development and NIL programs. Outgoing Bulls AD Michael Kelly and Interim AD Jay Stroman: "Bulls Athletic Properties is a bold step in positioning USF Athletics for long-term success, especially in the rapidly evolving college athletics landscape. By bringing our commercial operations in-house, we gain greater control, alignment, and the ability to innovate in ways that best serve our student-athletes, fans, and corporate partners. It is another example of how USF Athletics is building a 'model athletic department for modern times.'" The Bulls have partnered with Elevate to support the division’s launch. Elevate will provide expertise across staffing, structure, and revenue operations. (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale joins SeventySix Capital Managing Partner Wayne Kimmel about the efficacy of NIL Go and explains he’s spoken with student-athletes who have said they already have NIL deals in place with their schools. “I’m going to do an identical deal with the collective, NIL deal just like the school deal, for this amount and these deliverables, and I’m going to submit it to the NIL Go system, and if they say that this deal can’t go through, my comp, when I go into arbitration, is my school deal, and I’m looking forward to fighting it. I’ve talked to other athletes who are like, ‘I’m just not going to submit anything. How will they know?’ So, that’s where we’re at. It’s something that we have to face, and we need leaders. Leadership is hard. If leadership were easy, just like anything else that’s great, everyone would do it…and there’s going to be moments in time where leaders have to do unpopular things.” Cavale cites SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey’s decision to institute a plan to play football during COVID as an example of a leader making a difficult decision. The other leagues, including the Big Ten, followed suit, and Cavale asserts: “That saved college football in 2020 – and a ton of revenue for a lot of schools. It was an unpopular decision. It was leadership. And I commend Commissioner Sankey for that leadership. We need that same leadership here. We need to stop calling NIL deals NIL deals. They’re not. They’re performance deals. We have to tell the truth on that. We need to structure them as such. And then we need to stop asking Congress for help that they’re never going to provide and just continue to wait and sink on a ship when we could build a beautiful ship and build a bridge to walk across and everyone will have it better – fans, athletes, schools. There’ll be more money. I really believe this is going to save the industry, not hurt it. … We’ve seen a couple of athletic directors from power conference schools go public – one in the SEC, one in the ACC – saying we need collective bargaining. I think you’re going to see that grow as well.” Full podcast. (link)

Fresno State has some ideas for ways to create new revenue streams that involve taking home games to other venues downtown, including having the baseball team play a national opponent in a series at Chukchansi Park or hosting a throwback basketball game at Selland Arena. Bulldogs AD Garrett Klassy: “I’ve had some conversations already with (Fresno) Mayor (Jerry) Dyer about how we can be better partners with the city. We can’t just stay in our bubble and make people come to us. How do we go to them? No idea is off the table. We throw around a lot of things, but the money is in the execution, not the idea, so we have to make sure we have executable ideas that will benefit our fans and our athletics department.” (link)

The Wyoming wrestling team is slated to move into its new home at the John Corbett Building following the 2025-26 season. The new space, totaling 13,431 feet, will more than double what the team currently possesses and will be one of the largest wrestling-specific facilities in the world. It will also include locker rooms for both the student-athletes and coaches/support staff, a weight room, a sports medicine recovery and rehab area, a team meeting area/lounge and seating to observe practice. Take a peek inside. (link)

TCU and Colonial Country Club have the funding and agreements in place to build a golf performance center at Colonial and make it the designated home of the Horned Frogs’ men’s and women’s golf programs. The facility is scheduled to begin construction in July, or August, with an expected completion date before the 2026 Charles Schwab Challenge, according to Colonial president Frank Cordeiro. The 5K-sq-ft center will feature hitting bays, a locker room for the respective teams, offices, and a lounge area for the players. A short range facility is already completed. (link)

Detroit Mercy has upgraded many aspects of the men’s and women’s golf facilities over the past year, including the purchase of a new TrackMan simulator and projector, a second hitting bay, a newly renovated room and a forthcoming new lounge, which will house new furniture and 20 new lockers. The Titans are selling naming plates on the lockers for $400 each. (link)

Puck’s John Ourand examines Peacock’s sports streaming journey as guided by NBC Sports President Rick Cordella and observes that “Peacock’s decision to carry Big Ten games would prove to be its most consequential sports move. Until then, Peacock’s sports strategy had largely focused on simulcasts and smaller sports; with the Big Ten deal, it was investing in exclusive games with premier teams.” Cordella: “The Big Ten moment was the first time we invested significant money in exclusive sports for Peacock. If you’re a big-time college basketball fan – men’s or women’s – Peacock’s probably a pretty big part of your diet.” Ourand points out that the Big Ten’s exclusive games on the streamer “yielded even higher levels of retention, and the viewers who subscribed just to watch a game tended to stick around and watch other content. Cordella explains it’s “like a door-buster sale. On Black Friday, people got in the door because you had this piece of content, but they stuck around and bought other things on the shopping list.” Moving forward, Peacock believes the NBA will play a similar role for the spring sports window: “One of the things that drew us to the NBA was the fact that it’s premium content in the spring, when there aren’t a lot of other sports happening. The fall landscape is dominated by college football and NFL. In the spring, we have events like the Derby, the U.S. Open, and Preakness, but those are one-day events. To have the NBA regular season and playoffs all the way through May will hopefully keep people engaged and keep those sub numbers up. When you run a streaming service, there’s always a hole in the bucket. You have to add more water to the top of the bucket to keep it filling up. The NBA, hopefully, is that water.” (link)

The D1.dossier for USF is available for those interested in leading the Bulls. Save time and effort in the research process and most importantly, win the job. Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller on his use of a D1.dossier: “The D1.dossier was extremely helpful for the interview process by identifying the key stakeholders and providing the current landscape at Coastal Carolina. It saved me a tremendous amount of time from having to research and gather it myself. I appreciate the service and highly recommend it to my counterparts around the country.” (link)

Florida AD Scott Stricklin provides perspective on a number of key industry issues, starting with the rate of change: “People crave certainty. And that's really an impossible thing to give people. They will settle for clarity, but even clarity has been hard to provide at times. It's really not even starting with '21, but it goes back to Covid. If you think about it, college athletics has been on a kind of six-month spin cycle. Things evolve like every six months, seemingly in the last five years.” On the House settlement: “My sense is that it has a chance, for the first time since '21, to have some kind of consistent way to the way we operate relative to the benefits we provide athletes. What's different about this is this new system is going to be a part of a federal-court approved plan and approach, a settlement that both sides agreed to what the structure would look like, both sides meaning the plaintiffs, being the athletes, and the defendants, being the conferences and the NCAA. That hasn't existed up to this point. The enforcement piece is obviously going to be a really key component to making sure this thing works as envisioned.” Also, on roster limits & revenue sharing: “We will have the max on our rosters that are allowed. We won't be scholarshipping every roster, but we'll probably add over 50 new scholarships to over what we have done traditionally. [Stricklin later clarified that UF's scholarship total will increase from around 265 to 320 and can be split to impact more student-athletes.]” Lots more. (link)

Ole Miss doesn’t plan to cut any sports as AD Keith Carter explains: “The way we looked at it, really from day one, the way I talked to our staff and coaches about it was certainly with rev share and just the math problem that you have to solve with $20.5 million coming on your budget, you got to find new revenues, of course, and we’ve worked hard at that and we’ll continue to do that. But you also need to take a look at your operation and you need to become more efficient and you need to cut some things and, you know, try to cut some costs there. In the cost-cutting exercise from A to Z, Z would be cutting sports. Very, very, very last option. We’re nowhere close to that right now. It’s not even in the discussion.” (link)

Tarleton State AD Steve Uryasz joins the Big Mountain podcast and covers several topics, including upgrades to the football stadium, about which he notes: “We don’t need any more seating in Memorial Stadium. What we need is premium seating and revenue-generation opportunities. … I think one of the greatest examples within our own state here is what they did down at Baylor. So Baylor, compared to their previous stadium, holds, what, about 45,000 now? It’s smaller but has all the suites in the clubs and the loge boxes and those types of things. … Those are the things that generate the revenue necessary for rev-share, for growth, in order for us to compete at the highest level.” Regarding the future of DI governance, Uryasz points out there’s already been a bifurcation between the Power 4 and everyone else, “and you have to understand that that is the way it is. And we have to figure out where we fit and what we want to do and where we want to compete. We have, as an institution, never hid the fact that our ultimate goal at some point – don't know when – is to be an FBS Institution, and that still remains our goal. But right now what we're doing is trying to do everything we can to win at the FCS level, to put our stake in it.” Full podcast. (link)

Northern Iowa AD Megan Franklin explains that UNI offers student-athletes a “relationship-based experience,” adding: “Our coaches are so good because they’re transformational coaches. They develop student-athletes, provide them the athletic experience of their dreams, depending on what that student-athlete wants to achieve. But they are also loved. … Now student-athletes will leave for decisions that may have fiscal reasons, but it will be the predominant reason. So, culture wins. It does, and that’s what we are prideful about here.” While the Panthers are opting into the House settlement, Franklin notes there are “pros and cons with change. Yeah, we’re trying to be as optimistic as we can. I do think, like I say, Northern Iowa is in position with some really wonderful infrastructure to help us. … My challenge back to our fans was, when are you going to sign your national letter of intent? It’s time to join the Panther Scholarship Club. It’s time to get your season tickets. That’s your commitment. … That was my message, and I believe it was met with a fair handshake.” (link)

Former Sun Belt/WAC Commissioner Karl Benson tells JohnCanzano.com’s eponym that “I can tell you exactly what the Pac-12 is going to say if they add [Texas State]. They’re going to say that Texas State has the potential to be the next Boise State. I said the same thing when I added them to the WAC and again when I added them to the Sun Belt. It never happened – but maybe this is the time.” As for who else could possibly join the league, Canzano notes that UTSA “comes up frequently in conversations I’ve had with sources,” while Rice “gets mentioned a little, too.” However, one conference source tells Canzano that it’s “looking like one all-sport addition, most likely.” Canzano also notes that “the Pac-12 presidents aren’t happy that the Texas State stuff has gone public, but the Bobcats are a logical, common-sense choice given the bottom line they offer. Campus presidents in the Pac-12 weren’t thrilled when I reported two weeks ago that Texas State had slipped in front of UNLV and was shaping up to be the Pac-12’s next likely all-sports addition. … Some Pac-12 presidents believe the source of the leak was conference athletic directors, who are understandably eager to get the expansion piece done. The ADs find themselves in more frequent contact with media, fans, and boosters than presidents.” (link)

In the event Texas State leaves for the Pac 12, what does Louisiana Monroe AD John Hartwell think of the possibility of Louisiana Tech joining the Sun Belt? Hartwell: “I think it’s an outstanding opportunity, I don’t think it’s a slam dunk yet. Things are trending in that direction. … I would say they are the odds on favorite at this point, if the dominoes fall like it looks like, they very well could.” (link)

Cal Poly will not reinstate its swimming and diving programs. A three-month fundraising campaign led by swimming and diving student-athletes raised nearly $9M, but fell short of the $15M threshold Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong required to save the program. A letter from Armstrong this week: “This is an unfortunate reality given the approved NCAA House settlement, state budget and the tenuous situation moving forward for both the state and the NCAA. I want to reiterate that the significant and unequitable changes in the NCAA and the House settlement (and new organizations resulting from this settlement) had an impact that weighed heavily in this decision.” (link)

The Athletic’s Justin Williams and Grace Raynor take a look at how the Trump administration’s travel bans will impact international student-athletes and point out that “as written, the U.S. travel restrictions, mostly for countries in Africa and the Middle East, should directly impact only a small percentage of current international college athletes. The most recent NCAA data estimates there were roughly 23K international college athletes across all divisions in 2023-24. That equals about 4% of all college athletes, only a sliver of whom hail from the 19 restricted countries. The NCAA’s data on athlete country of origin, last updated in 2022, counted athletes from 12 of the 19 impacted countries, but only two produced more than a dozen athletes that year: Haiti (24) and Venezuela (126). Canada, for comparison, had the most international students with 4,408. … Because of the caveats for existing visa holders, the international college athletes most likely to be impeded by the ban would be those who need a U.S. visa, either new athletes or current athletes from the banned countries who might have traveled home for the summer on an expired visa.” As such, Green and Spiegel immigration attorney Ksenia Maiorova tells The Athletic that “I do not want my international athletes traveling abroad unless it’s a true emergency. It’s just not worth the risk. … In addition to the bans, you have to consider that a student-athlete could just be denied entry on a valid visa even if there is no ban.” More. (link)

In this episode of The Career Hustle, College.town’s Kristen Eargle is joined by Georgia Executive Assoc. AD of Development Ford Williams, who discusses the skills that are vital in today's landscape, managing large fundraising projects, what he's tracking as the industry shifts and lots more. Williams observes that the “workforce is shifting in collegiate athletics” and explains that “we’ve hired some really great young people lately over some people that have been higher-experienced because we've seen some turnover from that standpoint of people looking for the next opportunity. We just want to be a landing place for people where they can come in and hone their craft and really have as much success as they want to have at the University of Georgia if they're willing to put the time, effort and energy in. So really trying to find those individuals that want to be here and want to be a part of it is really what the key to success is as far as I’m concerned.” Given the changes within the industry, Williams takes the building-the-plane-while-flying-it metaphor a step further and says: “Sometimes we’re inventing the parts to the plane, and that can be a really, really big challenge, but I do believe the model that we build and continue to progress with, the ability to be nimble allows us to shift with the landscape and how things go. I think trying to manage where the development world is at the end of the day it's about revenue and being able to bring value to your institution and so I tell our team all the time and staff meetings we want to be the problem-solvers for athletic department whether it's a number we’re tracked on or it’s a new number we’re generating that exists and we haven’t leveraged before, how are we bringing value in terms of actual dollars and value in terms of the resources that help the machine move forward.” Lots more.
