The NCAA has selected 22 administrators across all three divisions to participate in its 2025-26 Pathway Program, a yearlong initiative designed to prepare senior-level athletics administrators for their next career step as directors of athletics or conference commissioners. Participants will meet June 22-27 in Indianapolis, Ind., for a week-long education session before returning in the fall for more programming and to observe their divisions’ respective governance meetings before concluding the program at NACDA in Las Vegas, Nev., in 2026. Edward Waters VP/AD Ivana Rich sits down with D2.ticker’s Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NCAA Convention to discuss the Tigers’ transition to DII, fundraising and more. Now being officially full members, Rich is excited for all of the opportunities open to EWU from NCAA postseason competition to NCAA grants and programming. Looking back, Rich would advise others going through the process to “explain all of the benefits of the process early on, before you even submit the application, because what people may not understand is that this process and not only betters the athletic department, it will make your institution better and stronger.” As the only college football program in Jacksonville, FL and the oldest HBCU in the state, Rich on leveraging that unique niche: “I think that helps us from a marketing standpoint, also from a sponsorship standpoint. People love football and so what I do all throughout the football season, I bring people in to see it. A lot of people don't even know we have a football stadium. Our stadium is only three years old, and so for years they played at local high schools and parks, so now we have the show and the show is on the campus. It's really helped us to bring people in, educate them, but also helped us leverage sponsorships because people love college football and to be able to invest in college football right here in Jacksonville and investing young people that are doing that here, I think it makes a big difference.” More on BOSCA. NCAA lead outside counsel Rakesh Kilaru tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy the first appeal of the House settlement being Title IX-focused “comes as a little bit of a surprise, because it’s related to the allocation of damages. Traditionally, the way to deal with dissatisfaction over the allocation of damages is just to opt-out, as some student-athletes did. It’s maybe telling that Judge Wilken [didn’t hear] an argument on this specific objection at the final approval hearing, perhaps for that reason. But with that said, she wrote a really thorough opinion – 76 pages. It goes out of its way to address every objection and really think through the issues carefully. Ultimately, whoever’s appealing is going to have to show that she abused her discretion, which is a really high standard and gives her a lot of leeway to make the decision that she thinks is right.” (link)

The Athletic’s Justin Williams and Grace Raynor take a look at how the Trump administration’s travel bans will impact international student-athletes and point out that “as written, the U.S. travel restrictions, mostly for countries in Africa and the Middle East, should directly impact only a small percentage of current international college athletes. The most recent NCAA data estimates there were roughly 23K international college athletes across all divisions in 2023-24. That equals about 4% of all college athletes, only a sliver of whom hail from the 19 restricted countries. The NCAA’s data on athlete country of origin, last updated in 2022, counted athletes from 12 of the 19 impacted countries, but only two produced more than a dozen athletes that year: Haiti (24) and Venezuela (126). Canada, for comparison, had the most international students with 4,408. … Because of the caveats for existing visa holders, the international college athletes most likely to be impeded by the ban would be those who need a U.S. visa, either new athletes or current athletes from the banned countries who might have traveled home for the summer on an expired visa.” As such, Green and Spiegel immigration attorney Ksenia Maiorova tells The Athletic that “I do not want my international athletes traveling abroad unless it’s a true emergency. It’s just not worth the risk. … In addition to the bans, you have to consider that a student-athlete could just be denied entry on a valid visa even if there is no ban.” More. (link)

The Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2 CCA) announces nine D2 CCA Dual-Gender Tip-Off Classic bids for the 2026-28 cycle. D2 CCA President and Mountain East Commissioner Reid Amos: "We are excited to announce the upcoming cities and venues for the 2026-2028 D2 CCA Dual-Gender Tip-Off Classics. We received a record number of bids in this cycle and we are excited to expand these events to six new locations starting in 2026." The 2026 exempt events are slated to take place in Ellensburg, Wash. (Central Washington), Honolulu, Hawai’i (Hawaii Pacific University/College Tournaments Hawaii, LLC) and Wisconsin Dells, Wis. (GLIAC/Justagame Fieldhouse). The three 2027 bids include West Texas A&M/Amarillo Convention and Visitors Bureau, Visit Rapid City/The Summit Arena at the Monument and Grand Valley State, while Montana State Billings, Simon Fraser and Sport Tours International, Inc./St. Mary’s (TX) comprise the 2028 bid group. Embry-Riddle highlights creation of the Champions Fund that aims to honor its student-athletes who win championships with the resources to cover all costs of custom title rings. Supporters who contribute at least $500 to the fund earn the opportunity to receive a personalized championship ring to commemorate the sport championship of their choice. The NCAA Softball Rules Committee has proposed that if a hitter has one foot completely out of the batter's box or stepping on the plate while contacting a pitch, an immediate dead ball would be called. In this scenario, the batter would be ruled out, and all runners would return to the base they were occupying at the time of the pitch. Video review challenges could also be made to see whether a batter illegally hit a pitch with a foot outside the batter's box. However, if an umpire makes the call on the field that a batter had a foot outside of the batter's box at the time of contact, it could not be reviewed, and all runners would remain at the base they were occupying. The committee also proposed requiring a double first base to be implemented for the 2025-26 academic year for Division I and Division II competition. Additionally, the committee recommended that if a video review challenge is used and the call on the field is changed, that team would retain its challenge. If a game goes into extra innings, all remaining challenges would carry over. More. (link)
