New Hawaii AD Matt Elliott Q&As with Spectrum News, addresses a number of topics for the Rainbow Warriors amid industry change. Notably: “A lot of the work that I want us to do over the course of the next year is, what does it mean to compete? [What] are you doing in football? What does it mean to compete in basketball or baseball, or whatever the sport is at that Mountain West level? What are our peers doing? How are they investing in their student athletes? And that's the work, right? So if you can get yourself ready by understanding the background, then you put together your plan, and at the end of the day, you make do with what your resources are. But it's also my job as an athletic director to go out and grow that pool, right? I have to go out and I have to raise money, and our staff has to go out and raise money. We have to take advantage of corporate sponsorships. We have to sell tickets. All of those things can add to our budget, and then tell our story again, to this community, to our legislature, to our entire administration, to our government to say, ‘this is what you're investing in.’ This is why it's so important. (UH) is everybody's team, right? If we can be successful, then everybody's successful, and everybody's a part of that. So if that's the job, that's what we have to do, and we do it right now.” (link)

Elevate Chairman & CEO Al Guido to Boardroom in an article about private equity’s potential impact on college athletics: “What’s probably underreported is the amount of infrastructure that’s happening on college campuses. And if you look at all the facilities in the Power 4 conferences, most of them have been built before or not majorly touched since WWII.” Velocity Capital Management Founder & Managing Partner David Abrams, whose firm is part of Elevate’s $500M push: “We’re economic partners in collective value creation. This is a very differentiated approach because we are not trying to buy someone’s program. This is the transition of a very large industry that has been undercapitalized and needs the expertise of a partner like Elevate.” Learfield CEO Cole Gahagan chimes in: “From an equity perspective, it is difficult to see how private equity capital injections can work in college athletics. PE firms are looking for a rate of return on that investment. Typically, that translates to an exit down the line. Fundamentally, it’s hard to understand how a university can be executable as a traditional investment.” Instead, Gahagan predicts more comprehensive value creation partnerships like Learfield’s recent creation of Buckeye Sports Group alongside Ohio State. (link)

Sticking with the theme of private equity, Old Dominion AD Wood Selig comments to the Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen: “That’s where philosophically, the private equity group and the university would have to get on the same page. What is the athletic department going to look like and what is the investment in? Is it just football and, say, men’s basketball where there might be a profit to be had? Do they just carve those sports out? But if you’re talking Michigan or Notre Dame, maybe it’s the entire enterprise.” Georgia Southern AD Chris Davis also offers a perspective: “At the end of the day, we have to do not only what’s best for our student athletes, but also the institutions we represent. When you look at it, the reason why you hear a lot of people talking about it is I think everyone is inquiring. And right now, you have to have a curious mind. In any business sector, revenue is important to grow. But how do you do it in different areas? Because you don’t want to put all the revenue in one area of the ecosystem.” (link)

With the first pitch of the Men’s College World Series championship set for tonight in Omaha, The AP’s Eric Olson reports: “(Coastal Carolina AD) Chance Miller told The Associated Press all 34 at Coastal Carolina would receive full scholarships and be in line for direct rev-share payments. Miller said he also believes the Chanticleers’ opportunities for name, image and likeness earnings will compare favorably with those for power conference baseball teams within two years. [...] He said a significant portion of the revenue sharing for 2025-26 comes from donors, including a ‘transformational gift’ from one who wished to remain anonymous. A fundraising dinner in Omaha last week brought in $1 million, he said.” More from Miller on the rapidly changing industry landscape: “We talked to one of the collectives from a power four school I know very well, and right now they’re spending $2.5 million on the (baseball) team and next year they’re going to spend $3 million because they frontloaded a lot of NIL money from their collective. The year after that, they’re going to drop down to $500,000. So that’s a drastic drop.” (link)

Last weekend Kansas AD Travis Goff told the Kansas City Star that he expects the Jayhawks to spend $4.5M-$5.5M in revenue sharing with its men’s basketball program. On that topic, Memphis AD Ed Scott said this week: “If Kansas' number is right and that's an accurate number, we're very competitive with Kansas in men's basketball. So for all those who think we're not competing in men's basketball, I'm here to set that record straight. And we have more money in football than we have in basketball.” Scott also notes that his position regarding a potential move for the Tigers to the Pac-12 “hasn’t changed” since the school denied the invitation last year. Scott: “The only thing that’s changed is that Pete Thamel wrote an article. That’s the only thing that’s changed. (Nothing has) changed from my standpoint. I checked my email … just before I left (for this press conference), and I did not see any breaking news on the ticker that the Pac-12 had announced their media deal. So, for me, my position hasn’t changed.” The article to which Scott refers is Thamel’s mention of Memphis sending its football program to the Pac-12 but the rest of its programs to the Big East. Scott says he has “had no real, substantive conversations” with Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman and adds: “I’m worried about trying to get us into a Power Four conference. That is our first goal, unequivocally, and it’s always been our goal.” (link, link)

For years, South Carolina has offered an $86 athletics fee per semester ($172 annually) that allowed USC students to attend every Gamecock sporting event, with the exception of having to enter a lottery for the chance to attend football games. Those benefits will all remain, however there is now a new “athletics auxiliary fee” of $300 annually being added for students, on top of the $172 fee that’s already in place. The auxiliary fee could generate nearly $11.5M in new revenue, which the school notes will not go toward additional scholarships or revenue sharing. Instead, the Gamecocks say the new dollars will “continue student access to athletics events/ticket lottery, address increased event/program operating costs, and enhance the student experience across multiple USC sporting venues. Enhancements will include student centered in-game activity and promotions, facility upgrades and additional support for health/safety staffing at athletics events.” (link)

Colonial Life and South Carolina have agreed to extend the Colonial Life Arena naming rights sponsorship, one which has spanned more than 20 years. The renewed agreement, which runs Oct. 1, 2025 through June 30, 2027, includes exterior and interior signage at the Colonial Life Arena as well as promotional packages with the Gamecocks. (link)

More on West Virginia AD Wren Baker’s comments on the 3 Guys Before the Game Podcast as the Mountaineers leader says that he is “shopping” the naming rights to both Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium and WVU Coliseum. Baker: “To be named soon… One of those is close. … I know that West Virginians get endeared to tradition. But I'll tell you something else that I have found that West Virginians are pretty endeared to is winning. And so if somebody, you know, if it pencils an amount that makes sense for us to do, we have to look at it, even if it slightly adjusts some of the things on tradition” (link)

Even more from Florida AD Scott Stricklin as a continued theme in the NIL/revenue-sharing era is how athletic departments balance facilities projects with rev-share funding, and Stricklin acknowledges there are no easy solutions, particularly as UF raises money for updates to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. “We've got to be really creative and aggressive and also come up with a really good plan. The fact of the matter is, if it's the right mix of premium inventory and fan amenities, people will pay for that. And they'll pay for it willingly. We saw that at the Condron Ballpark. Our game day revenue from the last year at McKethan to last year at the ballpark was 7x. A lot more people are coming out, but they're willing to pay more. It just drives more revenue. That's why it's really important that you just don't slap paint on this thing, and you have a plan that keeps what's special about the Swamp but extends the useful livelihood of this facility for another 50 years.” On the potential for stadium naming rights and other revenue-generating opportunities, Stricklin notes: “Pro sports is a great model. They have figured out a lot, and there's a lot we can learn from how they have operated in their revenue generation.” Stricklin also says of the potential elimination of sports: “There would have to be a nationwide movement to eliminate sports, in my opinion, before it got to the SEC and certainly before it got to the University of Florida. There's no plans or intent to do that.” More. (link)

Outgoing Marshall AD Christian Spears delivered what could be described as farewell remarks during a recent board of governors meeting, saying: “Let me close with an enormous amount of gratitude. I’ve significantly enjoyed the experience of serving as your Athletic Director over the last three years. The people we have come across, we’ve developed genuine relationships with the staff and coaches we have hired. This staff has hired 11 head coaches. That’s a special accomplishment. Thank you to the Board of Governors for the great decisions you have made with building a baseball stadium and hiring amazing coaches. We’ve appreciated our time here and wish the institution the best — peace and love.” As for House settlement impact for the Thundering Herd, per MetroNews: “Marshall will see an overall decrease of 44 roster spots, though all athletes will now have financial assistance. In addition, tuition for all athletes will be based on an in-state rate, saving the MU Athletic Department around $200,000.” (link)

Winthrop will opt-in to the House settlement. Eagles AD Chuck Rey: “This is an exciting, unprecedented and transformational time for intercollegiate athletics, and Winthrop Athletics remains fully committed to competing at the highest level of Division I.” (link)

Oregon AD Rob Mullens is receiving a three-year extension through June 2033, pending approval by the UO Board of Trustees. Under the terms of the extension, Mullens’ pay will increase from $980K plus deferred compensation, performance and retention bonuses — which he was receiving through June 2030 under his existing contract — to a $1.15M salary with $50K annual increases, plus $100K in deferred compensation and performance and retention bonuses. According to The Oregonian’s James Crepea, Mullens will become the eighth highest paid AD in the Big Ten and among the top 20 nationally based on 2024 data. Also from Crepea: “Mullens will also receive a bonus ranging from $10K to $25K based on Oregon finishing in the top 50 in the (Learfield) Directors’ Cup standings. His bonus for academic performance remains $50K if the department has a four-year Academic Progress Rate of at least 985. The buyout Oregon would owe Mullens if it were to fire him before the end of the contract remains all of his remaining base salary plus 80% of his cumulative remaining retention bonuses, so long as the termination occurs before July 1, 2030.” (link)

Wisconsin and its NIL collective filed a complaint in state circuit court on Friday against Miami (FL) for alleged tortious interference involving the transfer of football student-athlete Xavier Lucas, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who further explains: “In a first-of-its-kind and, perhaps, a precedent-setting move,” Wisconsin is seeking unspecified financial damages, transparency and accountability from Miami for allegedly interfering with a binding revenue-share contract between Wisconsin and Lucas. “Wisconsin claims that Miami communicated with Lucas. ‘Knowingly inducing’ him, despite knowing he had entered a contract with the school, something it terms as ‘intentional’ interference that ‘was not justified or privileged’ and caused Lucas to ‘breach’ his contract.” From the suit: “Miami interfered with UW-Madison’s relationship with Student-Athlete A (Lucas) by making impermissible contact with him and engaging in tampering.” UW tells Dellenger that it “reluctantly” filed the suit but is “committed to ensuring integrity and fundamental fairness in the evolving landscape of college athletics.” The Big Ten has also released a statement in support of the suit: “We stand by our position that respecting and enforcing contractual obligations is essential to maintaining a level playing field. In addition to our legal action, we will continue to be proactive to protect the interests of our student-athletes, our program and the broader collegiate athletics community.” (link)
|
More from the Big Ten on the lawsuit via On3’s Pete Nakos: "The Big Ten Conference is aware of the litigation recently filed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison against the University of Miami and is supportive of UW-Madison's position. As alleged, the University of Miami knowingly ignored contractual obligations and disregarded the principle of competitive equity that is fundamental to collegiate athletics. The Big Ten Conference believes that the University of Miami's actions are irreconcilable with a sustainable college sports framework and is supportive of UW-Madison's efforts to preserve." (link)

Conference commissioners this week once again discussed making Week Zero a permanent playing date for football teams, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who reports: “FBS leaders held more conversations on the long-discussed concept during the annual three-day gathering of Division I conference commissioners” in Asheville this week. “Commissioners expect the conversation to continue in the coming weeks and months. While there is growing support for the move, no formal proposal has been introduced. That’s not the case for FCS. The division is expected to formalize a proposal that permits schools to begin playing on Week Zero – a decision that would add a 12th regular season game to the schedule starting in 2026.” For FBS leaders, the conversation is more complex, as SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey tells Dellenger: “My view is we should have a consistent start date. The adage is, teams make their most substantial improvement between Games 1 and 2. I think we should have a consistent start date. Labor Day weekend has been a good start date for college football. The fact we are taking another look at it could be interesting. I’m not opposed to that. I want to make sure it’s a broad view of the issues and not something narrow.” American Commissioner Tim Pernetti adds that establishing a consistent start date would help eliminate some of the red tape that comes with making special Week 0 requests: “We had a good discussion about the calendar and a uniform start date for FBS instead of continuing to deal with waiver requests, case by case. A consistent start date is a key element to the future of FBS.” (link)

More from Florida AD Scott Stricklin who Q&As with Gators Senior Writer Scott Carter about the latest changes in the industry and says that for revenue-sharing to work, one thing he wants to know is: “Is there swift justice for [breaking the agreement?] I think we're all hoping everybody plays by the rules, but understanding human nature, there's probably some people that are going to test that. If someone is found circumventing the cap, there's got to be swift justice. I don't know Bryan Seeley, but I'm encouraged by his background, having been part of enforcement at the Major League Baseball level. Even some of the decisions that he has handed down have been pretty punitive and have sent strong messages.” Stricklin also talks about reducing expenses by 5% across all departments for the FY26 budget: “We tightened our belts in some areas across the department. And then we have a lot of services that we have paid the university for, and there's some of those that we are reassessing: could we come up with a way the university could give us a break on some of those [parking lots, utility costs, etc.].” More. (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne talks about the Crimson Tide’s approach to sharing revenue: “We have taken the approach that it’s based off of revenue generation. We think that’s a solid approach. We think that’s one that makes sense for our program. As you’ve heard me say many times, football is the engine that pulls the train. At the same time too, our two sports that turn a profit are football and men’s basketball. So they will have the highest percentage of that rev-share and then we’re splitting up the remaining dollars with our sports who are ticketed. We have four sports who are ticketed – softball, baseball, gymnastics and women’s basketball. Those are the six sports that will have some type of rev-share. … I’ve heard all over the yard how schools are doing it, and how many sports. I know one we compete against all the time is only doing three sports. I know that some schools are doing a little bit for everything. I’m not sure how much of a difference that will make at the end of the day when you just carve off a small sliver for a sport, but we have a plan. I’ve told our coaches it’s fluid. We’re doing the best we can to make decisions with the information that we have right now.” (link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker joins the 3 Guys Before The Game podcast to discuss the latest developments in college sports and how the Mountaineers are navigating them. Baker explains that WVU about a year ago brought in Huron Consulting to conduct a thorough analysis of the athletic department to present to the board. The selection of Huron through the RFP process was made in part because Huron is not an “athletics traditional-based firm. We wanted the data to be unimpeachable.” The data confirmed much of what WVU already believed, including: “We do a really good job of raising money when compared to peer institutions, especially when you factor in that we have less premium seating than other institutions. If we had more premium seating, that's going to drive donations, it’s going to drive what you require annually, but also it's going to drive people trying to get in and jockeying for position to get their hands on” that inventory. “The other thing it found is that our campus investment – the average Big 12 campus investment at this point is somewhere…around $40M. We’re way less than 25% of that. So, I do think that was eye-opening for the board.” As it relates to funding for the House settlement, Baker notes WVU will increase revenues and is “down the path on one naming rights opportunity that’s significant, a seven-figure opportunity.” Lots more. USF has launched Bulls Athletic Properties, a new independent division that will oversee key revenue-generating functions, including ticketing, corporate partnerships, media rights, and marquee venue agreements. It will also work in close coordination with athletics development and NIL programs. Outgoing Bulls AD Michael Kelly and Interim AD Jay Stroman: "Bulls Athletic Properties is a bold step in positioning USF Athletics for long-term success, especially in the rapidly evolving college athletics landscape. By bringing our commercial operations in-house, we gain greater control, alignment, and the ability to innovate in ways that best serve our student-athletes, fans, and corporate partners. It is another example of how USF Athletics is building a 'model athletic department for modern times.'" The Bulls have partnered with Elevate to support the division’s launch. Elevate will provide expertise across staffing, structure, and revenue operations. (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale joins SeventySix Capital Managing Partner Wayne Kimmel about the efficacy of NIL Go and explains he’s spoken with student-athletes who have said they already have NIL deals in place with their schools. “I’m going to do an identical deal with the collective, NIL deal just like the school deal, for this amount and these deliverables, and I’m going to submit it to the NIL Go system, and if they say that this deal can’t go through, my comp, when I go into arbitration, is my school deal, and I’m looking forward to fighting it. I’ve talked to other athletes who are like, ‘I’m just not going to submit anything. How will they know?’ So, that’s where we’re at. It’s something that we have to face, and we need leaders. Leadership is hard. If leadership were easy, just like anything else that’s great, everyone would do it…and there’s going to be moments in time where leaders have to do unpopular things.” Cavale cites SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey’s decision to institute a plan to play football during COVID as an example of a leader making a difficult decision. The other leagues, including the Big Ten, followed suit, and Cavale asserts: “That saved college football in 2020 – and a ton of revenue for a lot of schools. It was an unpopular decision. It was leadership. And I commend Commissioner Sankey for that leadership. We need that same leadership here. We need to stop calling NIL deals NIL deals. They’re not. They’re performance deals. We have to tell the truth on that. We need to structure them as such. And then we need to stop asking Congress for help that they’re never going to provide and just continue to wait and sink on a ship when we could build a beautiful ship and build a bridge to walk across and everyone will have it better – fans, athletes, schools. There’ll be more money. I really believe this is going to save the industry, not hurt it. … We’ve seen a couple of athletic directors from power conference schools go public – one in the SEC, one in the ACC – saying we need collective bargaining. I think you’re going to see that grow as well.” Full podcast. (link)

Fresno State has some ideas for ways to create new revenue streams that involve taking home games to other venues downtown, including having the baseball team play a national opponent in a series at Chukchansi Park or hosting a throwback basketball game at Selland Arena. Bulldogs AD Garrett Klassy: “I’ve had some conversations already with (Fresno) Mayor (Jerry) Dyer about how we can be better partners with the city. We can’t just stay in our bubble and make people come to us. How do we go to them? No idea is off the table. We throw around a lot of things, but the money is in the execution, not the idea, so we have to make sure we have executable ideas that will benefit our fans and our athletics department.” (link)

The Wyoming wrestling team is slated to move into its new home at the John Corbett Building following the 2025-26 season. The new space, totaling 13,431 feet, will more than double what the team currently possesses and will be one of the largest wrestling-specific facilities in the world. It will also include locker rooms for both the student-athletes and coaches/support staff, a weight room, a sports medicine recovery and rehab area, a team meeting area/lounge and seating to observe practice. TCU and Colonial Country Club have the funding and agreements in place to build a golf performance center at Colonial and make it the designated home of the Horned Frogs’ men’s and women’s golf programs. The facility is scheduled to begin construction in July, or August, with an expected completion date before the 2026 Charles Schwab Challenge, according to Colonial president Frank Cordeiro. The 5K-sq-ft center will feature hitting bays, a locker room for the respective teams, offices, and a lounge area for the players. A short range facility is already completed. (link)

Detroit Mercy has upgraded many aspects of the men’s and women’s golf facilities over the past year, including the purchase of a new TrackMan simulator and projector, a second hitting bay, a newly renovated room and a forthcoming new lounge, which will house new furniture and 20 new lockers. The Titans are selling naming plates on the lockers for $400 each. (link)

Puck’s John Ourand examines Peacock’s sports streaming journey as guided by NBC Sports President Rick Cordella and observes that “Peacock’s decision to carry Big Ten games would prove to be its most consequential sports move. Until then, Peacock’s sports strategy had largely focused on simulcasts and smaller sports; with the Big Ten deal, it was investing in exclusive games with premier teams.” Cordella: “The Big Ten moment was the first time we invested significant money in exclusive sports for Peacock. If you’re a big-time college basketball fan – men’s or women’s – Peacock’s probably a pretty big part of your diet.” Ourand points out that the Big Ten’s exclusive games on the streamer “yielded even higher levels of retention, and the viewers who subscribed just to watch a game tended to stick around and watch other content. Cordella explains it’s “like a door-buster sale. On Black Friday, people got in the door because you had this piece of content, but they stuck around and bought other things on the shopping list.” Moving forward, Peacock believes the NBA will play a similar role for the spring sports window: “One of the things that drew us to the NBA was the fact that it’s premium content in the spring, when there aren’t a lot of other sports happening. The fall landscape is dominated by college football and NFL. In the spring, we have events like the Derby, the U.S. Open, and Preakness, but those are one-day events. To have the NBA regular season and playoffs all the way through May will hopefully keep people engaged and keep those sub numbers up. When you run a streaming service, there’s always a hole in the bucket. You have to add more water to the top of the bucket to keep it filling up. The NBA, hopefully, is that water.” (link)
