LSU is the Men’s College World Series champion. Congrats to the Tigers on bringing home the program’s eighth national championship! (link)

Coastal Carolina Baseball HC Kevin Schnall, along with AC Matt Schilling, were thrown out during the first inning of yesterday’s decisive College World Series Game 2 by home plate umpire Angel Campos in a development widely questioned by the ABC/ESPN crew calling the game & criticized by media members around the nation. (link)
|
A statement from the NCAA explains: “In the bottom of the first inning, Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling were ejected from the game for continued arguing about balls and strikes after being warned initially by the umpire crew. NCAA Playing Rule 3-6-f-Note 1 states that balls, strikes, half swings or decisions about hit-by-pitch situations are not to be argued. After a warning, any player or coach who continues to argue balls, strikes, half swings or a hit-by-pitch situation shall be ejected from the game. In addition to today’s ejections, Coach Schnall is suspended for the next two games per NCAA Playing Rule 5-15-a-4, which states that an additional two-game suspension is added to any other penalties. By rule, no team personnel may continue to argue or to continue to excessively express themselves with prolonged actions or offensive language after an ejection. NCAA Playing Rule 2-26-f states that an assistant coach, if ejected, is automatically suspended for one game. Per NCAA Playing Rule 5-15-a-4 an additional two-game suspension is added to any other penalties. By rule, Coach Schilling is suspended for three games.” (link)
|
Schnall after the game remarked that “there’s 25,000 people there, and I vaguely hear a warning issued. As the head coach – I was an assistant for 24 years. As an assistant, you're almost treated like a second-grade, second-level citizen. And you can't say a word. As a head coach, I think it is your right to get an explanation of why we got warned. I'm 48 years old, and I shouldn't be shooed by another grown man. When I came out to ask what the warning was, a grown man shooed me.” Schnall went on to explain that “at that point, I can now hear him say 'it was a warning issued for arguing balls and strikes.’ At that point, I said, 'because you missed three.' At that point, ejected. If that warrants ejection, I'm the first one to stand here like a man and apologize. ... But if that warranted an ejection, man there'd be a lot of ejections. As an umpire, I feel like it's your job to manage the game – the national championship game – with some poise, some calmness and a little bit of tolerance." Schnall also addressed an umpire falling to the ground during the on-field argument that ensued: "If you guys watch the video, there was a guy that came extremely aggressively, tripped over [home plate umpire Angel] Campos' foot. Embarrassed in front of 25,000. Immediately goes 'two-game suspension' and says 'bumping the umpire.’ Immediately does that. There was no bump. He was embarrassed. I shouldn't be held accountable for a grown man's athleticism." (link)

Chants AD Chance Miller in a statement: "The ejections of head coach Kevin Schnall and assistant coach Matt Schilling in the bottom of the first inning drastically altered the trajectory of a must-win game for our team. These decisions were made with an alarming level of haste, without an attempt at de-escalation, and deprived our student-athletes of the leadership they have relied on throughout a historic postseason run. This is not about a single call — it's about process and professionalism. In the biggest moment of the college baseball season, our program and its student-athletes deserved better. The NCAA must re-evaluate how it trains, assigns, and reviews umpires in championship environments. We expect consistency, communication, and the same level of excellence from officials that we demand of our teams. Our players have represented this university, this conference, and college baseball with integrity and heart, and they deserved the opportunity to compete for a national championship with their leaders and we were denied that opportunity today." Learfield EVP for NIL Growth and Development Solly Fulp sits down with Alabama AD Greg Byrne, Memphis AD Ed Scott and Learfield NIL Partnerships & Operations Coordinator/former Alabama softball student-athlete Jenna Johnson to discuss commercial NIL post-House era and how both the Tigers and Crimson Tide are embracing the concept of “transformational” versus “transactional” NIL opportunities by prioritizing academics, life skills and institutional values into the deal-making process. Byrne points out that over the past few years, there have been “deals that really don't reflect what a real market is. I mean, some would say, ‘Well, that is the market.’ Well, is it? If you even compare it to the professional ranks, you didn't see athletes in certain sports getting similar NIL deals. They had salaries and they were full-time professional athletes, but the college model is just different. … So, we want to be able to sustain that long-term, and the House settlement, we think, gives us our best opportunity to do that.” Regarding the transformational versus transactional approaches of some student-athletes, Scott explains that if a student-athlete is more “bottom-line oriented, it’s probably not going to be a great experience for them at the University of Memphis, and it's probably not going to be a great experience for us. The chemistry in the locker room is not going to be great. And now, with the lack of regulation, there are a lot of people around these student-athletes that don't have their best interests in mind. So part of our job is to build relationships with your young people so we can educate them about who they have around them and making smart decisions.” Full interview. (link)

VCU AD Ed McLaughlin sits down with College.town Founder/CEO Matt Roberts at the 2025 NACDA Convention to discuss the House settlement, March Madness expansion, establishing a vision and more. McLaughlin explains that even though some athletic departments are experiencing attrition, some skill sets will remain highly valuable. “Not only that, but it’s going to be in high demand, there’s going to be high opportunity, and those who can differentiate themselves with those skill sets will have a leg up on everything. And how do you cast vision and how do you change peoples’ minds when student-athletes are making more than the staff? How do you keep the staff in the right headspace? How do you make sure that they see value? Because we always did this ‘for the kids.’ … You can still do that. 100%. You change someone’s life every single day in this business. Not a lot of businesses can do that.” Asked whether the ship has sailed on the possibility of everyone giving in a little to ensure the stability of March Madness, McLaughlin remarks: “I don’t think we’re too far down the river from a logistics/reality standpoint. The only way we'll be too far down the river is if certain personalities continue to drive it in a direction – it is people, not the process, not the system. The system can handle it. It’s the people. If the people make this go the wrong direction and we only think singlemindedly, then we might be too far down the river. I don’t think we are. I think common sense will take over at some point. … But if there’s no pushback on some of the directions in which greed has taken, then we have a problem.” Lots more. (link)

Washington AD Pat Chun on the football calendar: “To have a sport not complete its current year – to have player movement before a champion is crowned – does a disservice to the player and to the sport. It is mind-boggling to me that we would have a portal open and put young people in the position like what happened to the young man at Penn State (backup quarterback Beau Pribula, who transferred to Missouri). It’s not his fault he went into the portal. The environment forced him to go into the portal, as Penn State was competing in the playoffs.” (link)

When it comes to helping student-athletes navigate the revenue-sharing era, Tarleton State AD Steve Uryasz explains that it’s incumbent on universities to provide education about financial literacy. “We’re very clear with our student-athletes; it’s written out in the new contracts and agreements that they are responsible for paying taxes. I think that’s our responsibility to educate them. I’d love to see student-athletes turn around and say what’s the best thing I can invest in so that in 43 years I use this and I average 6, 7, 8% return? What does that $10K, $15K or $20K turn into after that period of time? We have a responsibility to provide that education. So we’ll use outside entities to come in to talk about investing, making good decisions. And I’ll tell you sometimes the toughest things are family because student-athletes – it doesn’t matter what institution I’ve been at – have an obligation and have always worked to try to support families in many cases. And sometimes it's hard to say no. We’re trying to teach all of our student-athletes how to say no to all those different things that could negatively impact them.” Full podcast. (link)

Here are the Learfield Directors’ Cup margins of victory the past several years, according to the Directors’ Cup Updates X account: 2018 -116 (226 1st vs 3rd); 2019 - 231.5 (347); 2020 - Covid; 2021 - 56.25 (125.5); 2022 - 97.25 (204.25); 2023 - 41.5 (241.24); 2024 - 64.25 (160); 2025 -1.5 (4.25). This year is “by far” the closest finish between the programs that finished first through third. Additionally: “Under the old scoring system, the margin was <100 only 3 times with the closest race being in 2013. 2013 - Stanford over Florida by 16.5 pts (3rd place UCLA by 34); 1994 - UNC over Stanford by 20 points; 1996 - Stanford over UCLA by 95.5 points. Why are scores closer this decade? Mostly because Stanford & Texas have been duking it out & finishing in 1st & 2nd in relatively tight races. This year Stanford & Texas had off years, falling back to the field while USC had a strong season leading to all 3 scoring ~1250 pts.” (link) This year’s winner will be officially announced on Thursday, June 26.

Want to work at Southern Miss? Golden Eagles Deputy AD/CRO Spencer Bridges joins College.town’s Kristen Eargle to highlight key initiatives in the department and shares some specifics of the current Asst. AD of Ticketing opening. Regarding the experiences and traits the Golden Eagles are looking for to fill the role, Bridges puts the ability to learn and adapt atop the list. “We are in an evolving state of collegiate athletics right now, and understanding what is today may not be tomorrow [is important]. Continue to evolve and move forward and understand what our core principles are as it relates to revenue and continue to drive that message, but also make it easy on our consumer fan base as well as being very easy to work with.” Bridges also notes that having passion will help candidates thrive in the role: “We are grinding everything out, and we’re going to continue to kick above our weight class as much as humanly possible and continue to fill our venues. Also we’re looking at auxiliary concerts and having more things at our venues. So, just really having a passion for owning what you are, mastering your craft, but also wanting to learn more and grow. This position, in my mind, is someone that’s going to come in here, be here for a couple years, and then they’re advancing in their career.” More on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork joins College.town's Kristen Eargle from the 2025 NACDA Convention to chat about the House Settlement and its implementation, the creation of the Buckeye Sports Group, why he wouldn’t mind pressing pause on discussing the College Football Playoff structure and the number one thing he's learned about leadership since becoming the Buckeyes’ AD. Regarding the CFP format, Bjork explains he prefers to first take a step back and evaluate the college football calendar as a whole, specifically the recruiting calendar, offseason calendar, transfer portal calendar, College Football Playoff calendar, and how long the season should be. “We should have two bye weeks per year. There's some years we only have one. So let’s take a step back and do a really comprehensive review of the calendar, let’s see what that looks like layered into the CFP expansion conversations, how we get access to that. To me, those debates should happen behind closed doors. I don’t like the fact that a lot of this sort of gets negotiated in the media. There’s a lot of smart people, we trust our commissioners, so I think we need to get everybody back in a room after some patience and just say, ‘Look, there’s a way to do this.’” Bjork also says OSU wants to use Ohio State Sports Properties to source third-party agreements in part because “it actually allows us to promote our female athletes better than what we’ve been doing because collectives have predominantly been for our male athletes. Now, with an environment between Learfield and our staff…we can actually go out and promote our female athletes in a much more meaningful way and connect them with brands.” Full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. After a highly successful 2024-25 campaign across its portfolio, including a breakthrough year for Football, Vanderbilt AD Candice Storey Lee says the Commodores aren’t done investing in order to replicate the success: “This is the SEC. You have to invest and invest at a high level. [...] It’s clear that we’re trying to, yes, invest where you get the largest return on investment, but also invest where all of our student athletes can be positively impacted.” Football HC Clark Lea: “We all see the opportunity that we have right now. And I think for those of us that have been in this really … certainly for me this being year five, I’m so excited to feel like I have something at stake, to feel like chips are on the table.” (link)

More from West Virginia AD Wren Baker during his interview with the 3 Guys Before The Game podcast. Baker talks about how the AD job has changed and explains one facet involves shorter tenures than there used to be. “I think institutions are probably a little quicker to want to move in a different direction than they used to be, but individuals also probably feel pressure in a different way and want to hit reset quicker. It’s why I'm very, very intentional during seasons if we're going through a time when it's not great, I really do build a wall around myself to the extent that I can because I recognize that sports, what’s really special about it is it allows people to be passionate, emotional – irrational – and that’s great for them, but part of your job is to really try to drill down on the data and make analytical decisions the best you can.” (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini examines the state of college football officiating and notes that of the dozen-plus people he spoke with, “almost all said officiating is better than it’s ever been, that the correct call percentage is somewhere around 98%, though some say it hasn’t improved enough or become consistent enough with technology.” NCAA Secretary-Rules Editor Steve Shaw puts it like this: “Our officiating is as good as it’s ever been. But the game demands more than ever.” That assessment is not shared by NBC rules analyst/former NFL official/former AAC Coordinator of Officiating Terry McAulay, who tells Vannini: “It’s not getting better, let’s put it that way. It’s stagnant at best, the actual officiating on the field. It’s just not getting better like it should be. We should be seeing more consistency both on the field and in the replay booth.” Feelings are similarly mixed among coaches who believe some conference officials handle judgment calls, such as trash talk on the field, differently. One HC remarks: “The SEC guys hear more s–t, so they don’t get worked up over dumb s–t. In the Big 12, I thought I was playing a game on my kid’s church league basketball team.” For those calling for more transparency, Shaw contends that “if we start publicly pounding officials, a lot of bad things happen with that.” That said, Vannini points out how increased transparency can be a benefit. The ACC late last season began letting the broadcast’s rules analyst listen in on the replay conversation and relay to viewers what went into decisions. Former Big 12 referee Mike Defee says that is a “wonderful model. One of the biggest things that hurts us are TV and the broadcasters who have no idea (of the criteria for a review).” Lots more. Renovations to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium are on track to be completed before the 2026 Memphis football season. Though costs have risen from an estimated $220M to $226.5M, the updates will be completed in two phases instead of the three initially planned. Two major new elements announced this week are plans to expand the north tunnel to accommodate special events like concerts and a new kitchen that will provide food for all the suites on the completely rebuilt west side of the stadium. The Tigers have raised $201M so far. (link)

USC football is expected to move into its new Bloom Football Performance Center in 2026. The final beam was lifted over the frame of the building this week. The new space will be 163K square feet, doubling the square footage that football currently has in the John McKay Center. The Trojans are getting a new locker room, meeting rooms, weight room, players lounges, hydrotherapy pools, and more. According to the Trojan Athletic Fund, USC has raised $174M with a goal of $225M for the new Athletics West campus that will feature Bloom and a new stadium at Dedeaux Field for the Trojans baseball program. Artificial turf is now installed at Colorado’s Folsom Field, ahead of schedule. Buffs AD Rick George on the new surface: “I think putting turf down there gives us flexibility, certainly with the change in the College Football Playoff. Being a northern school, you don't grow grass after October, and having a game in December was a big part of that consideration. Plus, it gives us another field we can practice daily that will benefit our football program.” (link)

Louisville is expected to rename a campus street after former Cards AD Tom Jurich, according to WDRB’s Eric Crawford, who reports the effort, “spearheaded by friends and supporters of Jurich in the community and backed by Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, has been under way for some time. The renaming is expected to be unveiled during a June 28 ceremony.” Greenberg confirmed the ceremony on WHAS Radio last Tuesday morning but did not announce the street naming, saying: "Tom has made such contributions to the city. I'm very thrilled that U of L was supportive of this and participated with us in this recognition. So this is an opportunity for everybody who has benefitted from Tom's contributions that he made to our city to recognize him in a really fun, unique way." (link)

Young alumni are increasingly opting for premium experiences at a higher rate than their older peers, according to a new report from Elevate, which, per SBJ’s Joe Lemire, “draws on data from 250M consumers in its new data system, EPIC (Elevate Performance and Insights Cloud), and from a nationwide survey of 6,331 fans conducted in collaboration with The Harris Poll.” Elevate Chief Innovation Officer Jim Caruso explains the goal of the research is to help inform the development of new amenities and other offerings as college athletic departments reckon with a changing landscape: “The thesis for us here was, let’s take a look and understand and unpack these audiences in a way that can help these clients to understand [how to build] when they’re thinking about offering new amenities, when they’re thinking about creating different experiences, when it’s not just, ‘Here’s a ticket to the game.’ We dive a little bit into the psychology, both from observable data – a behavioral standpoint – as well as from a qualitative standpoint.” The study found that 44% of young alumni – defined as those between the ages of 22 and 32 – are purchasing premium experiences such as exclusive hospitality or access to behind-the-scenes tours or athlete meet-and-greets. That figure is more than double that of fans aged 35 and up. According to Lemire, young alumni said “in-venue amenities were twice as important (60%) as game action (29%) in driving gameday satisfaction. That group also scored higher than older college fans in: buying tickets to live events, traveling to away games, joining fan clubs and loyalty programs, and contributing to athletic departments.” (link)

The NCAA Softball Rules Committee has proposed that if a hitter has one foot completely out of the batter's box or stepping on the plate while contacting a pitch, an immediate dead ball would be called. In this scenario, the batter would be ruled out, and all runners would return to the base they were occupying at the time of the pitch. Video review challenges could also be made to see whether a batter illegally hit a pitch with a foot outside the batter's box. However, if an umpire makes the call on the field that a batter had a foot outside of the batter's box at the time of contact, it could not be reviewed, and all runners would remain at the base they were occupying. The committee also proposed requiring a double first base to be implemented for the 2025-26 academic year for Division I and Division II competition. Additionally, the committee recommended that if a video review challenge is used and the call on the field is changed, that team would retain its challenge. If a game goes into extra innings, all remaining challenges would carry over. Other rules recommendations include allowing one-way electronic communication devices to be used by offensive players; requiring all protests be resolved during the game (games would no longer be played "under protest" for postgame decision); and allowing replays of a play under review to be shown at any speed on the in-game video board. The 549-page Senate Finance Committee’s budget proposal “only addresses sports specifically in one instance” and includes no language that applies to college athletic departments, according to Sportico’s Brendan Coffey, who adds: “That lack of attention to the industry by the Senate suggests that proposed changes to franchise ownership write-offs and collegiate licensing taxation may not make the final budget, saving owners and schools many millions of dollars in new levies. By contrast, the House of Representatives’ version of the federal budget aims to raise potentially significant revenue by changing the favorable tax treatment franchise owners and universities receive.” Specifically, Coffey notes the House budget suggests it would “like to see college licensing deals treated as unrelated business income. Nonprofits such as colleges generally are exempt from federal taxes, but activities they conduct that are considered outside their tax-exempt purpose can be taxed. A proposal to tax collegiate licensing deals was cut from the final version of the House budget forwarded to the Senate, which suggests it is unlikely to reappear during the reconciliation process. That’s another big bullet dodged by sports entities. The licensing tax as proposed last month has the potential for wide-reaching impact. For one, it would cost athletic departments millions of dollars in licensing revenue from caps, shirts, tchotchkes – everything that sells with a team or school logo on it. Moreover, the rule would also encompass a portion of media rights income, too, since contracts with representatives like Learfield and broadcasters like ESPN contain an underlying license of names and logos from universities.” Clay Grayson, a tax attorney who represents universities, booster groups and endowments, including those at Kentucky and Clemson, tells Coffey: “It should be concerning to athletic departments that Congress is considering whether to tax this athletic revenue source.” (link)
