The Pac-12 signs a media rights extension with CBS Sports through 2030-31 that will include the Football and Men’s Basketball championship games and at least three regular season FB and MBB games on CBS and Paramount+, plus more on CBS Sports Network. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds on the Pac-12’s media rights package: “CBS will anchor the league’s multi-platform media package with as many as four partners expected at a later date. The total value of that package remains unclear, though the final annual per-school figure is expected to fall toward the lower range of a projection that the conference showed expansion targets last year ($8-15M).” Dellenger also reports the league is in discussions with Texas State “as the two parties work toward a membership agreement that would start in the fall of 2026. While no deal is finalized, this months-long courtship is expected to reach a crescendo this week, when the formal extension of an invitation may be made. … Texas State’s potential departure from the Sun Belt – if a deal is reached – is expected to set off a chain of realignment moves within the Group of Six conferences. Officials in the Sun Belt, in fact, have already held internal discussion over potential expansion targets in Conference USA, most notably Louisiana Tech and Western Kentucky, according to those familiar with the talks.” The Conference USA exit fee is expected to be in the $5-7M range, and there is a $5M entry fee into the Sun Belt, “a figure that could be negotiated down at the discretion of the league’s board of presidents. If Texas State is offered a Pac-12 invitation at a full distribution, the school is expected to accept. … Whether the Pac-12 would extend an invitation to any other program remains unclear.” (link, link)

The Oregon Board of Trustees approved Ducks AD Rob Mullens’ previously reported extension, and The Oregonian’s James Crepea points out the contract includes the following: “Beginning July 1, 2029, Mullens may step down as AD and be appointed special adviser to the president for up to four years in a part-time capacity with $200K in annual compensation. UO president John Karl Scholz told the board that option was at Mullens’ request, but not necessarily indicative of what he will do four years from now.” Scholz: “I expect he wouldn’t be doing this if I think he wasn’t expecting to be with us through 2033, the length of this contract. But he’s under extraordinary pressure in an environment that is extremely challenging. I think this was his way of saying, ‘I’m in it, but here is a way that I might transition to something else if I can’t continue to do the job.’″ (link)

North Carolina announces it will increase its “scholarship allotment by nearly 200 across our 28-sport program (338 to 532).” UNC also explains that “with the addition of revenue share, and our new investments in football, we expect our approximately $150M budget in 2024-25 to grow by about $30M next academic year. To prepare, we have hired a new Chief Revenue Officer to investigate and initiate new revenue opportunities, including naming rights, field sponsorships and jersey patches, expanding football's Bell Tower Block Party to draw more fans, options to further optimize our relationship with corporate sponsorship partner Learfield and more aggressive ticket sales initiatives. ACC Success Initiatives and additional funding allocated by the state of North Carolina from gambling revenues may also assist our efforts in the coming years, and we will continue to evaluate our Department's budget and spending for cost-cutting opportunities. We appreciate the University's support as we navigate these financial changes.” (link)

The Florida State Board of Trustees has approved the use of $22.5M in auxiliary funding for the Seminoles' athletics program. Board Chair Peter Collins was among the chief proponents of the allocation, and FSU President Richard McCullough acknowledged Collins’ advocacy during today’s meeting: "This would not have happened without your fortitude, your ability to never give up, never die, never surrender. It was really your dogged approach that led to this great thing, which is really transformative for the university. Without this, I think we would be in big trouble." The Tallahassee Democrat’s Liam Rooney notes that the funds are “non-recurring and won't impact student fees or faculty salaries, according to FSU SVP for Finance and Administration Kyle Clark.” (link)

CBS’ John Talty examines the tampering lawsuit Wisconsin filed against Miami (FL) over the transfer of football student-athlete Xavier Lucas and notes the perception of being anti-player was a consideration for the Badgers, according to a source, “but the opportunity to set a precedent outweighed the potential negative optics. Wisconsin had used a standard revenue-share agreement drafted by the Big Ten that focused on Name, Image and Likeness rights, and if no one was willing to actually enforce it, it threatened to significantly diminish its value. Those involved believe it demanded a shifting of mindset from treating student-athletes like kids to acknowledging there was significant money now at stake.” A source with direct knowledge of the situation tells Talty: "They're being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars and now they're not allowing their picture to be used on the billboard or they're not honoring their obligations or they're not doing what they're supposed to be doing. It's a different dynamic when there's dollars involved." A high-ranking Big Ten source adds: “We believe the contract itself is enforceable. … No one can tell me why a contract shouldn't be enforceable between an adult and an institution. Contracts are enforceable in every other aspect of the commercial regulatory enterprise." (link)

South Dakota State AD Justin Sell covers several topics with Sioux Falls Live’s John Gaskins, including the future of Jackrabbits’ football and explains that if – theoretically – SDSU was to make a move to FBS, the conversation would require examining how it impacts all sports. “When you're an outlier in geography, it creates different challenges. And so from a theoretical standpoint, if this does end up going down the road where the A4 decides to do more of their own thing or kind of create the CFP and it's literally you're in that or you're in whatever the next level of football is, there could be natural attrition. I think the top schools in the FCS certainly can compete with the Group of 5 schools, and what does that look like? And then what you're getting into is it would be tough to make all those investments and then find yourself in the exact same place three years down the road if you may not have needed to do that. So I think that will work itself out. Our job is – and i’ve said this a hundred times – we need to be really good right now because our level of football, how we can compete and what we can do – we provide an amazing experience, our fans love it, we have a chance to win a national championship, and that can translate into whatever comes next.” Full podcast. VMI AD Jamaal Walton comments on how the Keydets will move forward in the revenue-sharing era: “We want to be an elite program, but we also want to do it in a way where we’re representing VMI. We’ve got to remain true to who we are, but also understand that we’ve got to evolve. That’s the key, we’ve got to evolve in the times that we’re in.” VMI has yet to decide whether it will opt into the House settlement, and Walton notes: "We've got a big decision to make. I think the Southern Conference has done a fantastic job of saying, 'Do what's best for your institution.' … For me, that plan is going to create a vision of where we’re going to go in the next four to five years as an athletic department. There are a lot of changes that are happening (in college athletics), but I feel there’s a lot of untapped opportunities that VMI athletics has not had a chance to really show. I think there are going to be some things in (the next year) that you’re going to see that are going to wow you a little bit, and get you excited. I think there are going to be some things that we’re going to continually do to obviously keep the standard of VMI what it is.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann submits that it’s unfair to attribute all of college sports’ cuts to the House settlement, explaining that it’s “important to remember that House settlement-related costs are not occurring in an intercollegiate sports vacuum. They should be placed in the broader context of higher ed; universities face multiple budget challenges that aren’t related to athletics but will make it harder to fund athletics. As a starting point, colleges face the dreaded ‘enrollment cliff.’ A decline in U.S. birthrates beginning in 2008 means that an accompanying drop in the population of U.S. college-age students will hit universities by next year. The drop is expected to be about 15% and last until around 2041. This development will have profound impacts on many universities, especially those in states expected to endure the harshest reductions—Illinois, for example, is projected to see a 32% drop in high school graduates between 2023 and 2041.” Furthermore, McCann points out the Trump administration’s “hostility toward international students is also a key consideration,” while Pell grants “have faced, or are expected to face, reductions and more eligibility limitations. … The federal student loan system is also in lawmakers’ crosshairs.” More. Texas District Judge George Jerrell Wise has cleared the way for a long-delayed trial between a group of disillusioned Texas A&M donors and the Aggies-affiliated 12th Man Foundation, stemming from a decade-old dispute over seating and parking rights at Kyle Field. The Houston Chronicle’s David Barron explains: “The donors, three of whom have died since the lawsuit was filed in 2017, allege they were promised lifetime or 30-year benefits for A&M games at Kyle Field in return for their donations, which ranged from $20K to $50K each. They claim those benefits were significantly diminished when A&M reconfigured the stadium after joining the [SEC] in 2012, and they estimate they lost seating rights now valued at $4.6M. … Under the endowment agreements reached in the last century, endowed donors were promised ‘best available’ parking and seating locations with tickets for home and away games and the option to upgrade their seat and parking spots at no additional cost, according to the lawsuit.” Layne Kruse, who is among the lawyers representing the 12th Man Foundation, did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment. EA Sports offers a glimpse behind the scenes of the making of College Football 26 with updates that include a dynamic time of day. “Now as you are playing the game you will notice a change in lighting from quarter to quarter. You could start a late afternoon game then it will now be dark before the finish.” The time of day will also be specific to regions and seasons. “Games in November will get darker sooner than those in September, adding a realism tied to the time of year. For example, a game that starts at 3:30pm in Happy Valley in September will still have the sun up at 5pm but a game in November, the sun will be down as the game is ending.” Other additions include new runouts, primetime pageantry, light and drone shows, band formations, new mascots, touchdown and turnover traditions, and more. As it relates to the runouts specifically, EA is “introducing a tiered system that adapts to the game's context and reflects each program's individuality. Whether it’s a primetime game, a rivalry steeped in history, or a quick matchup in your Road to College Football grind, our new runout system ensures that every game is tailored to the moment.” Check out the full rundown. Coastal Carolina Baseball HC Kevin Schnall, along with AC Matt Schilling, were thrown out during the first inning of yesterday’s decisive College World Series Game 2 by home plate umpire Angel Campos in a development widely questioned by the ABC/ESPN crew calling the game & criticized by media members around the nation. (link)
|
A statement from the NCAA explains: “In the bottom of the first inning, Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling were ejected from the game for continued arguing about balls and strikes after being warned initially by the umpire crew. NCAA Playing Rule 3-6-f-Note 1 states that balls, strikes, half swings or decisions about hit-by-pitch situations are not to be argued. After a warning, any player or coach who continues to argue balls, strikes, half swings or a hit-by-pitch situation shall be ejected from the game. In addition to today’s ejections, Coach Schnall is suspended for the next two games per NCAA Playing Rule 5-15-a-4, which states that an additional two-game suspension is added to any other penalties. By rule, no team personnel may continue to argue or to continue to excessively express themselves with prolonged actions or offensive language after an ejection. NCAA Playing Rule 2-26-f states that an assistant coach, if ejected, is automatically suspended for one game. Per NCAA Playing Rule 5-15-a-4 an additional two-game suspension is added to any other penalties. By rule, Coach Schilling is suspended for three games.” (link)
|
Schnall after the game remarked that “there’s 25,000 people there, and I vaguely hear a warning issued. As the head coach – I was an assistant for 24 years. As an assistant, you're almost treated like a second-grade, second-level citizen. And you can't say a word. As a head coach, I think it is your right to get an explanation of why we got warned. I'm 48 years old, and I shouldn't be shooed by another grown man. When I came out to ask what the warning was, a grown man shooed me.” Schnall went on to explain that “at that point, I can now hear him say 'it was a warning issued for arguing balls and strikes.’ At that point, I said, 'because you missed three.' At that point, ejected. If that warrants ejection, I'm the first one to stand here like a man and apologize. ... But if that warranted an ejection, man there'd be a lot of ejections. As an umpire, I feel like it's your job to manage the game – the national championship game – with some poise, some calmness and a little bit of tolerance." Schnall also addressed an umpire falling to the ground during the on-field argument that ensued: "If you guys watch the video, there was a guy that came extremely aggressively, tripped over [home plate umpire Angel] Campos' foot. Embarrassed in front of 25,000. Immediately goes 'two-game suspension' and says 'bumping the umpire.’ Immediately does that. There was no bump. He was embarrassed. I shouldn't be held accountable for a grown man's athleticism." (link)

Chants AD Chance Miller in a statement: "The ejections of head coach Kevin Schnall and assistant coach Matt Schilling in the bottom of the first inning drastically altered the trajectory of a must-win game for our team. These decisions were made with an alarming level of haste, without an attempt at de-escalation, and deprived our student-athletes of the leadership they have relied on throughout a historic postseason run. This is not about a single call — it's about process and professionalism. In the biggest moment of the college baseball season, our program and its student-athletes deserved better. The NCAA must re-evaluate how it trains, assigns, and reviews umpires in championship environments. We expect consistency, communication, and the same level of excellence from officials that we demand of our teams. Our players have represented this university, this conference, and college baseball with integrity and heart, and they deserved the opportunity to compete for a national championship with their leaders and we were denied that opportunity today." Learfield EVP for NIL Growth and Development Solly Fulp sits down with Alabama AD Greg Byrne, Memphis AD Ed Scott and Learfield NIL Partnerships & Operations Coordinator/former Alabama softball student-athlete Jenna Johnson to discuss commercial NIL post-House era and how both the Tigers and Crimson Tide are embracing the concept of “transformational” versus “transactional” NIL opportunities by prioritizing academics, life skills and institutional values into the deal-making process. Byrne points out that over the past few years, there have been “deals that really don't reflect what a real market is. I mean, some would say, ‘Well, that is the market.’ Well, is it? If you even compare it to the professional ranks, you didn't see athletes in certain sports getting similar NIL deals. They had salaries and they were full-time professional athletes, but the college model is just different. … So, we want to be able to sustain that long-term, and the House settlement, we think, gives us our best opportunity to do that.” Regarding the transformational versus transactional approaches of some student-athletes, Scott explains that if a student-athlete is more “bottom-line oriented, it’s probably not going to be a great experience for them at the University of Memphis, and it's probably not going to be a great experience for us. The chemistry in the locker room is not going to be great. And now, with the lack of regulation, there are a lot of people around these student-athletes that don't have their best interests in mind. So part of our job is to build relationships with your young people so we can educate them about who they have around them and making smart decisions.” Full interview. (link)

VCU AD Ed McLaughlin sits down with College.town Founder/CEO Matt Roberts at the 2025 NACDA Convention to discuss the House settlement, March Madness expansion, establishing a vision and more. McLaughlin explains that even though some athletic departments are experiencing attrition, some skill sets will remain highly valuable. “Not only that, but it’s going to be in high demand, there’s going to be high opportunity, and those who can differentiate themselves with those skill sets will have a leg up on everything. And how do you cast vision and how do you change peoples’ minds when student-athletes are making more than the staff? How do you keep the staff in the right headspace? How do you make sure that they see value? Because we always did this ‘for the kids.’ … You can still do that. 100%. You change someone’s life every single day in this business. Not a lot of businesses can do that.” Asked whether the ship has sailed on the possibility of everyone giving in a little to ensure the stability of March Madness, McLaughlin remarks: “I don’t think we’re too far down the river from a logistics/reality standpoint. The only way we'll be too far down the river is if certain personalities continue to drive it in a direction – it is people, not the process, not the system. The system can handle it. It’s the people. If the people make this go the wrong direction and we only think singlemindedly, then we might be too far down the river. I don’t think we are. I think common sense will take over at some point. … But if there’s no pushback on some of the directions in which greed has taken, then we have a problem.” Lots more. (link)

Washington AD Pat Chun on the football calendar: “To have a sport not complete its current year – to have player movement before a champion is crowned – does a disservice to the player and to the sport. It is mind-boggling to me that we would have a portal open and put young people in the position like what happened to the young man at Penn State (backup quarterback Beau Pribula, who transferred to Missouri). It’s not his fault he went into the portal. The environment forced him to go into the portal, as Penn State was competing in the playoffs.” (link)

When it comes to helping student-athletes navigate the revenue-sharing era, Tarleton State AD Steve Uryasz explains that it’s incumbent on universities to provide education about financial literacy. “We’re very clear with our student-athletes; it’s written out in the new contracts and agreements that they are responsible for paying taxes. I think that’s our responsibility to educate them. I’d love to see student-athletes turn around and say what’s the best thing I can invest in so that in 43 years I use this and I average 6, 7, 8% return? What does that $10K, $15K or $20K turn into after that period of time? We have a responsibility to provide that education. So we’ll use outside entities to come in to talk about investing, making good decisions. And I’ll tell you sometimes the toughest things are family because student-athletes – it doesn’t matter what institution I’ve been at – have an obligation and have always worked to try to support families in many cases. And sometimes it's hard to say no. We’re trying to teach all of our student-athletes how to say no to all those different things that could negatively impact them.” Full podcast. (link)

Here are the Learfield Directors’ Cup margins of victory the past several years, according to the Directors’ Cup Updates X account: 2018 -116 (226 1st vs 3rd); 2019 - 231.5 (347); 2020 - Covid; 2021 - 56.25 (125.5); 2022 - 97.25 (204.25); 2023 - 41.5 (241.24); 2024 - 64.25 (160); 2025 -1.5 (4.25). This year is “by far” the closest finish between the programs that finished first through third. Additionally: “Under the old scoring system, the margin was <100 only 3 times with the closest race being in 2013. 2013 - Stanford over Florida by 16.5 pts (3rd place UCLA by 34); 1994 - UNC over Stanford by 20 points; 1996 - Stanford over UCLA by 95.5 points. Why are scores closer this decade? Mostly because Stanford & Texas have been duking it out & finishing in 1st & 2nd in relatively tight races. This year Stanford & Texas had off years, falling back to the field while USC had a strong season leading to all 3 scoring ~1250 pts.” (link) This year’s winner will be officially announced on Thursday, June 26.

Want to work at Southern Miss? Golden Eagles Deputy AD/CRO Spencer Bridges joins College.town’s Kristen Eargle to highlight key initiatives in the department and shares some specifics of the current Asst. AD of Ticketing opening. Regarding the experiences and traits the Golden Eagles are looking for to fill the role, Bridges puts the ability to learn and adapt atop the list. “We are in an evolving state of collegiate athletics right now, and understanding what is today may not be tomorrow [is important]. Continue to evolve and move forward and understand what our core principles are as it relates to revenue and continue to drive that message, but also make it easy on our consumer fan base as well as being very easy to work with.” Bridges also notes that having passion will help candidates thrive in the role: “We are grinding everything out, and we’re going to continue to kick above our weight class as much as humanly possible and continue to fill our venues. Also we’re looking at auxiliary concerts and having more things at our venues. So, just really having a passion for owning what you are, mastering your craft, but also wanting to learn more and grow. This position, in my mind, is someone that’s going to come in here, be here for a couple years, and then they’re advancing in their career.” More on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)
