The PSAC invites Lackawanna (NJCAA) to join the league as its 18th member, as the college seeks to become the first NJCAA football-playing school to transition to DII. Commissioner Steve Murray: “It is a new era in collegiate athletics, and this is a new paradigm for the PSAC as we welcome Lackawanna to the Conference. President Jill Murray's vision for Lackawanna College is remarkable, and we believe that the movement to a four-year athletics program and Division II supports that vision and the future of the institution. The Mountain East invites Shawnee State (NAIA) to become the league’s 12th member, starting July 2026, pending acceptance into the DII membership process. SSU also plans to add Football no later than the 2028 season. Mansfield AD Peggy Carl will no longer lead the Mountaineers as of the end of the month, as Softball HC Edith Gallagher will serve as Interim AD, starting July 1. The university has begun the search for AD Peggy Carl’s successor. (link)

Sonoma State Interim President Emily Cutrer updates on the future of athletics after the recently introduced Sonoma State Commitment proposal: “NCAA athletics will not be reinstated for the 2025-26 academic year. The $8 million in discretionary funding will help support strategic engagement on long-term funding solutions for SSU athletics. As I’ve discussed with the Senator, I will work with Vice President Gerald Jones, to whom Athletics reports, to establish a working group composed of a wide range of constituencies to make recommendations regarding the future direction of student athletics. Its report will be due no later than January 2026.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker was credited with a little more than $3.4M in total compensation for his first 10 months on the job in 2023, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz. Federal tax records also show former President Mark Emmert received slightly more than $1.4M in base salary and more than $600K in other benefits during his final months with the association. Emmert also received nearly $4.3M in severance during the 2023 calendar year. Berkowitz notes that Baker’s total pay included just over $2.6M in base compensation, $400K in bonus pay and nearly $360K in other reportable compensation. The base amount, when annualized, is a little more than $3.15M. (link)

The Associated Press’ Eddie Pells writes on an interesting development on Capitol Hill: “College sports leaders seeking antitrust and other protections from Congress have a potential bargaining chip: School assurances that they will provide funding for their increasingly imperiled Olympic programs, by far the biggest pipeline of talent for Team USA. [...] While the U.S. government is forbidden by law from funding Olympic teams, there is no such prohibition on government funding for universities and their sports programs. One idea would be for the bill to include promises of certain levels of funding for college Olympic sports programs — some of which could be raised through federal grants to help the schools offset the cost.” NCAA President Charlie Baker: “It would depend upon what they have in mind. We’d be open to a conversation about that because those sports are important and they matter.” USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland: “We have no reason to believe that there’s not real alignment from all the parties, including members of Congress, who have indicated to us a very real concern for Olympic and Paralympic sport.” (link)

Noted attorney Tom Mars points out that today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in Trump v. Casa “brings an end to nationwide injunctions (aka ‘universal injunctions’) like the one entered by a Tennessee federal district court early last year, which prohibited the NCAA from enforcing its NIL rules. Westminster has been hit with two years probation after Track & Field student-athletes competed while ineligible, including at the direction of former HC Dan Quinn. Quinn instructed an academically ineligible female student-athlete to compete under the name of an eligible one and told male student-athletes to compete under absent student-athletes’ names as roster numbers dwindled so that the program could meet its sport sponsorship requirements. Quinn has been hit with a two-year show-cause penalty that requires a suspension from 20% of the indoor and outdoor T&F contests during his first year, in addition to a vacation of records and a $2,500 fine for WU. Lewis will discontinue varsity Men’s and Women’s Tennis and continue to offer tennis as a club sport. “Declining interest in tennis from prospective students, coupled with struggles to establish coaching stability, contributed to the final decision. The move will allow Lewis to focus on supporting its remaining 22 athletic programs at the highest levels.” (link)
