Congratulations to Notre Dame on capturing the men’s lacrosse national title, the program’s first. Longtime Fighting Irish HC Corrigan explains the feeling: “I’ve been playing and coaching college lacrosse 40 years. I lost in a championship game when I was playing at Virginia — in overtime. Losing in overtime as a player…losing as a coach in the championship game, you get so close. I don't know how I'm supposed to feel right now. I don't feel this crazy euphoria as much as just this contentment of being able to watch those guys celebrate on that field in this last game.” (link)

The Big 12 and Gonzaga “continue deep discussions,” according to Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger, who notes Navigate, the Zags’ consulting firm, is also part of the conversations. Dellenger also reports there will be a focus on conference expansion during the league’s meetings in West Virginia this week. “The Big 12’s pursuit of Gonzaga, UConn, San Diego State and UNLV is somewhat contingent on whether the league can grab any Pac-12 defections. The conference’s new TV contract calls for a pro-rata share for any Power 5 expansion members. Additions from the Group of 5 could mean splitting the television revenue by however many programs are added—a potential issue for some officials.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Sankey left reporters with the impression that he prefers a nine-game conference football slate, according to The Athletic’s Emerson, though he notes Sankey didn’t explicitly state as much. Sankey did, however, remark: “The league at the forefront of college athletics does not stand still. And this is the league at the forefront of college athletics. Now whether change happens immediately is part of the careful consideration. And a deep consideration.” Sankey also downplayed Georgia President Morehead’s remarks last week that more compensation from ESPN would be needed in order to expand to nine games. “Money follows, it doesn’t lead. … If all you do is chase money, then you make really bad decisions. The money doesn’t just come from one source. If all we do is one source of revenue, then we’re at great risk. Ticket sales are an enormous source of revenue. … The importance in the value and interest in conference versus conference competition, there’s money inherent there, without ever talking about media (compensation).” (link)

The Athletic’s Mandel makes the point that “ESPN is balking at paying the SEC any more than they do now. That’s why I don’t assume these conferences will just keep adding more and more schools. The networks have a breaking point.” To which Crakes Media’s namesake responds: “Agree but would just qualify and say it's not necessarily about the networks so much as it’s about the distributors, you know, the folks who pay 80% of the freight for Tier 1 rights.” (link)

Baseball’s RPI Repair?
+ The RPI is like an old hammer, according to D1Baseball’s Etheridge, who explains that “for many situations, it works fine. Then there’s that swing that gets away from you.” In selecting this year’s NCAA Tournament field, Etheridge observes there were “some swings that the hammer got right. The seed lines looked really solid. No mystery two-seeds that should have a three or vice-versa. The host teams were all defensible picks, and the top eight was as well.” The problems, Etheridge continues, are “at the cutlines, the last host or two, and the last few spots in the field. That’s where the focus is, and that’s when we lose our [hammer] head.” While the SEC is the “best baseball conference by any measure,” Etheridge notes that fact allows teams to “stockpile top 50 wins” and suggests: “Instead of an arbitrary number like 50, why not measure it against the teams in evaluation for the field? That would include bubble teams like Arizona State (52), USC (53), and Kansas State (55) and exclude teams with no chance for inclusion, like Georgia (42), Louisville (43), and Missouri (50).”
+ Auburn AD/Selection Committee Chair Cohen acknowledges that “if you are in an RPI-challenged league, you have to figure out how to get some top 50 opponents in those early weekends” and adds: “I think there needs to be some groupthink, and some statistical experts to come in and help us kind of recreate this thing. Basketball has done a great job of changing their RPI to the NET and moving it in a different direction.” Lots more. (link)
+ More from Cohen, who says his two biggest areas of concern are game cancellations and traveling. He argues steps should be taken to disincentivize the former and reward the latter. “If a team travels 300, 400 miles away, and they have to make a commitment financially and all the things that travel does to you, I would love to see a little more weight put on that. And if you do that, I think you’re going to have more Power 5s travel more to try to get that credit, and the Midwesterns, Northeasterns, even some folks out West, they’re going to get more credit as well.” (link)

New Mexico AD Nuñez talks with AthleticDirectorU’s Garcia Cichosz about the importance of alignment, how he recruits and retains a staff to bring a vision to reality, what he’s learned from serving as a university liaison to the state legislature and how he handles internal and external criticism. Nuñez explains institutional alignment is the result of establishing a relationship. “You can’t be just transactional. … For me, it started when I first arrived, understanding that this is bigger than just athletics. It’s getting them to know who I am, what my values are, what my vision is, for athletics, for the university, how we can align ourselves perfectly, and then working together to achieve what our goals are.” Similarly, Nuñez emphasizes the importance of relationship-building in his role as a liaison to state lawmakers. “I’m not asking them to be my best friend, but I want them to know who I represent, why we do what we do, and when I'm talking in there, I’m not just representing UNM athletics. I’m representing UNM as an institution. … It’s given me a great understanding of the politics, the way decisions are made at a high level and to know that I have been able to help lead the role for he university, it’s been fun.” Check out the full Q&A on ADU. Chicago Bulls/White Sox owner Reinsdorf has acquired a controlling stake in Stadium, the media outlet he helped form in 2017. The majority stake was previously held by Sinclair, and Front Office Sports’ Fisher reports the “equity move was precipitated in part by Sinclair’s own corporate issues.” Terms of the deal were not disclosed, “but sources indicated further, large-scale moves are expected by Stadium in the new Reinsdorf-led structure. Those moves will be closely watched against the backdrop of the October 2024 expiration of the regional rights contract for the Bulls, White Sox, and Chicago Blackhawks with NBC Sports Chicago. Reinsdorf has previously explored starting his own network to varying degrees.” (link)

Road to Omaha…
+ The NCAA Baseball Championship field is set. Overall, the SEC leads with 10 teams in the field, followed by the ACC (8), Big 12 (6), Pac-12 (5) and Sun Belt (4). (link)
+ Here’s the full bracket. (link)
+ According to D1Baseball’s Rogers, Arizona, Oklahoma, Troy and Louisiana were the last four teams in, while Arizona State, Kansas State, Kent State and UC Irvine were the first four teams out. (link)
+ Auburn AD Cohen, who was the committee chair, “acknowledges the RPI is flawed and we need to come up with a better system, but this committee nonetheless went all-in on RPI as the primary factor. Cohen indicated last summer that he wanted to do things differently as chair, but in the end, it was the same old, same old. Cohen says the committee can and will do something differently with the process in the future. OK, but when? And who's gonna drive that change, if not you? You're the guy in position to make something change. What are you waiting for? Let's go. All that said, I agree with Cohen that you can't make the change mid-stream, when teams have already built their schedule with RPI in mind. But let's go ahead and get the ball rolling on a change for, say, 2025. That gives everybody time to adjust before it goes into effect.” (link)

Football Scoop’s Barnett examines which schools reached the postseason in multiple “major” sports, noting first that 28 qualified for both a bowl game and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Meanwhile, three FCS departments reached the FCS Playoffs and MBB tournament. Of those 31, the list gets whittled down to 13 when baseball is added to the mix. Introducing women’s hoops to the equation further pares the list down to seven. Zeroing in further on the Venn Diagram by adding volleyball leaves just two teams that qualified for championship postseason play in each sport: Texas and Tennessee. The list stays the same when adding softball. (link)

As the SEC prepares to determine whether it will adopt an eight- or nine-game scheduling format for football, Kentucky President Capilouto tells Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger: “It is very fair to say that it is not just about the money. As we focus more on student-athlete well-being, one has to understand the implications of this in light of new (CFP) formats and length of the season. What does it all mean in a bigger context is what we should consider. What does it mean for bowl participation and length of season? All those things come first.” Dellenger subsequently notes a third question has “gone mostly unanswered for a year now: the extra money from ESPN, which is not contractually required to provide more money for a ninth game. Without the incentive of additional revenue from the network, more than half of the league is in support of remaining at eight games in the first year that Texas and Oklahoma begin play in 2024. The expectation is that ESPN, in the midst of layoffs, will not commit to additional revenue for a ninth game—at least not now. The temporary, one-year eight-game model is a placeholder for a potential nine-game schedule to start in 2025, if ESPN enhances the deal.” One SEC administrator tells Dellenger: “That’s probably what will happen. I don’t see the desire to go to a ninth game and not have any increase from a revenue standpoint.” (link)

Former Minnesota President Bruininks tells the Star Tribune’s Scoggins that athletics is a “big part” of the job. “It's not the only part and it's not the major part, but it's a very significant, high-visibility part of the role and responsibilities of a chief executive at the University of Minnesota." Historically speaking, Bruininks calls it “nearly inevitable” that the Gophers’ next president will be faced with some type of major event, particularly given the speed at which the industry is currently moving. “[Athletics] plays a bigger-than-life-sized role in the public perception of the university. But it is a big responsibility, and it has to be managed along with all the other issues that are front and center." (link)

Ole Miss has received a $1.5M donation from Susie and Lampkin Butts that will benefit the School of Business Administration and the Ole Miss Alumni Association and improve facilities for Ole Miss athletics. Rebels AD Carter: “Because charitable gifts like Lampkin’s and Susie’s are so important to our programs and to our student-athletes, we plan to express our gratitude by naming an entrance gate at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in their honor, as well as the Quarterback Room in the new Manning Center.” (link)

New on Connect: Utah Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Kirk joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle to talk about the growth of women’s basketball. Kirk outlines how the Utes have quadrupled season ticket sales and increased the number of Instagram followers by 44% YoY, adding: “As the moments presented themselves with the incredible moments this year…our creative team really met the moment too by capturing that and putting it together in ways that were really compelling and engaging for fans, and we saw that on social media the way those accounts grew.” While tickets, attendance and social media engagement have been important gauges for success, Kirk also points out local media coverage “absolutely exploded – just the amount of stories they were doing, the presence they had at our games and practices really raised the profile. So, I think we continue to measure in those ways. How are we making an impact? Are more people learning about this team, these student-athletes, who they are and why they should be supported?” Full conversation. (link)

LSU Asst. AD for Sport Psychology and Counseling Poole talks with Brown Asst. VP for Athletics and Recreation Engel Lewis and Colgate Deputy AD/SWA Smith for AthleticDirectorU to discuss the various ways they champion success from their senior level positions. Engel Lewis shares four factors she uses to impact decision-making – authenticity, empathy, transparency and integrity – and explains her role in creating an “inclusive environment of belonging” at Brown. Smith discusses the importance of mental health and wellness for student-athletes as well as administrators, coaches and staff. “[Student-athletes] come to us with the tools they need to be successful, so if they have those challenges it’s something that we just learn how to address and we are cognizant about how we keep that in the forefront of the minds of the leadership team, of the coaches…because everyone really is part of the care team in the life of a student-athlete.” Whether it’s a position coach, trainer, mental health specialist or someone else on staff, Engel Lewis says all of those individuals can pick up on signs of trouble for student-athletes and “all of us have a responsibility to that student-athlete. … It’s not just one person’s responsibility to be able to respond or identify that.” (link)

Oregon men’s golf student-athlete Solhaug was forced to withdraw from this weekend’s NCAA Championship after stepping on a tee that went through his shoe and his foot. Golf.com’s Hirsch notes Solhaug was +2 for 10 holes when the injury occurred after shooting a 75 in Round 1. His withdrawal meant UO had to count a teammate’s 7-over 77 Saturday in the play-five-count-four format, putting the Ducks in 22nd place, seven shots out of the 15th spot on the leaderboard, the cut for advancing to the fourth round.” The Ducks ended up finishing 27th. We offer our best wishes to Solhaug for a full and speedy recovery. (link, link)

Altius Sports Partners Founder/CEO Schwab describes NIL as a three-mile trek, telling SBJ’s Smith the first mile is the matchmaking process between student-athletes and businesses, the next mile is developing the campaign with the brand, and the last mile is “educating the athletes, it’s the communication, it’s all of those little things that have to be solved in that last mile. It’s all of those little details that can’t be overlooked. That’s where you’ve got to fill the gap for brands and athletes. So far, all of the focus has been on the first mile, which is the matchmaking process. ‘How do we get deals?’ … That’s great, it spurs business. But you can’t leave that last mile on its own or else there’s going to be a lot of unhappy people on the athlete and the brand side.” Schwab goes on to note that while he was VP at NFL Players Inc., “we had a department of player services that really was the activation and fulfillment service to NFL sponsors and licensees. Any brand that wants to activate in college sports has to solve that ‘last mile’ problem. That’s what we’re trying to do.” Moving forward, Altius VP of Athlete Partnerships DeCarolis expects more national brands to get involved with NIL. “I think we’re going to start seeing Fortune 500 companies start to work with college athletes that have so much influence and such passionate fan bases.” (link)

According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the average student loan combined payment is $393 per month, while the median is $222 per month. Additionally, the average student loan debt is over $39K, and the median debt load is over $19K, and the percentage of borrowers with growing loan balances stands at 47.5%. FreightWaves Founder/CEO Fuller consequently observes: “This is the biggest risk currently in the goods economy. Student debt is the second largest form of consumer debt in the US. 25M Americans were able to pause their $393 avg. payment/mo for the past 3 yrs. It resumes in Q3. It is going to take consumer spending with it. This demo is a major driver of consumption, especially of physical goods.” (link)
