CollegeAD provides the details of freshly minted Northern Arizona AD Uri Farkas’s contract, which is “set to run until June 30, 2027, after which the Board and Farkas will meet to discuss extending the contract for an additional two years. Farkas will earn an annual base salary of $220K.” Farkas will have the opportunity to earn up to $50K annually in performance-based bonuses tied to the University's academic and athletic achievements: Annual APR bonuses are as follows: 965-970: one week's salary; 971-984: two weeks' salary; 985 and above: three weeks' salary. Annual Team GPA bonuses: 3.0-3.19: one week's salary; 3.2-3.39: two weeks' salary; 3.4 and above: three weeks' salary. For winning or tying for the Big Sky Presidents' Cup: Farkas will earn $4,583 (one week's salary). He’ll earn the same for making the NCAA Tournament in men’s or women’s basketball. That figure increases to two weeks’ salary for advancing to the Sweet 16 and four weeks’ salary for winning the national championship. For a top-two football finish in the Big Sky, Farkas can earn $4,583. That increases to $9,166 for making the FCS Playoffs: $9,166 and $18,333 for winning the FCS national championship. If NAU receives over $1M in major gifts in a fiscal year, Farkas will receive a $20K bonus. Should NAU terminate the contract without cause, Farkas will be paid 40% of his remaining base salary as a lump sum, with the remaining 60% paid in monthly installments. (link)

More on the meeting between Sun Belt leaders on Tuesday to discuss the future of the conference membership following Texas State’s departure to the Pac-12. One source tells the Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen: “I would simply call it a discussion. There was no vote.” Mettlen also reports that “sources said that while Louisiana Tech, Western Kentucky and others from Conference USA could be options to replace Texas State in 2026, there are some who favor continuing with 13 members for at least a year. Taking that route would allow the current members to each take a slightly larger share of the conference revenue while also waiting to see if other dominoes fall in conference realignment. Potential drawbacks to sticking with 13 would include being forced to change scheduling and conference championship formats without the two seven-team East and West Divisions.” Any vote on expansion requires approval from 10 of 13 board members to go through, but one source tells Mettlen a vote may not be called unless there is a clear consensus. Auburn AD John Cohen and Football HC Hugh Freeze addressed recruiting concerns, and Auburn Live’s Justin Hokanson drills down to the main point: “August 1 is the first day recruits can receive written NIL offers for what they can expect to earn at a specific college. Until then, it’s all verbal offers. Cohen and Auburn believe when some programs begin to have to put their money where their mouth is, the written offers might not match the verbal offers.” To that end, Cohen remarked: “August 1 is the first day that a prospective student-athlete can receive an offer on paper. Okay, that’s a big day. It’s not rumor, it’s not innuendo, it’s not this person says this. It’s an offer on paper. We’re a good distance away from August 1, and we’re a really good distance away from December. And we’re also operating, as you guys have been discussing, in a brand new landscape, a landscape in which you bring in somebody at a certain offer and guess what? The person at that position and their agents are going to look at a coaching staff and a GM and say, well, ‘I’m the starter at that position and that’s not my number.’ There’s some real things that are about to take place. There’s some really new things on the horizon that have never happened before. And I’m here to tell you we’re going to do this the right way. We’re going to do it just like Coach Freeze just mentioned. We’re going to be honest, we’re going to be forthright and we’re looking very much forward to August 1 and dates beyond.” More. (link)

Tulane AD David Harris joins Collegiate Sports Associates President Drew Turner from the 2025 NACDA Convention for a conversation about the search process that led to his role with the Green Wave, the search process that resulted in the selection of Football HC Jon Sumrall, how to navigate the confidentiality aspect that is necessary as a sitting AD and more. Harris explains that the process “can be involved enough to where it can easily take your attention away from the job that you’re doing. And when you’re a sitting AD, that can be a dangerous spot to be in. So, you will see situations where someone will get into a bad spot because they can’t maintain the proper balance between their current job and the job they're looking to pursue.” As such, Harris explains that “one of the things you’re thinking about is how is the process going to work, how can my confidentiality be protected. If I’m talking to you because you contacted me about a job, I’m saying, ‘Drew, talk to me about this process because I can’t have my name come out. If my name’s going to come out, I need to have the job. So it can’t come out that I’m interviewing. Those things need to be confidential between me, you, the search committee and my president, who’s the one person I’m going to talk to.” Lots more in the full conversation, which is now live on Collegiate Sports Connect. Two former college wrestlers – Sebastian Rivera (Rutgers/Northwestern/2024 Olympian) and Ryan Deakin (Northwestern) have filed what is now the third appeal of the House settlement, per Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich, who explains the notice “does not give information about the nature of the appeal, but Rivera sent a letter (link) objecting to the ‘Additional Sports Class’ receiving so little backpay compared to the other classes.” (link)

Chattanooga can provide up to $4.8M in revenue sharing, with roughly $2.66M going to men's basketball, $1.31M to football, $485K to women's basketball and $350K earmarked for other sports. Mocs AD Mark Wharton: "Those percentages are pretty on target, but that $4.8M is really high at our level.” As for why UTC is distributing more to men’s basketball, Wharton explains: “We have more of a chance to be exposed nationally and can make some money in hoops if successful." Montana AD Kent Haslam confirms the Grizzlies are opting into the House settlement and explains: "The initial settlement had no provision for accommodating roster limits through what's now called 'designated student-athletes.’ But as it unfolded, there was an opportunity to preserve our roster limits by grandfathering in your current squad sizes. That completely changed our mindset. Like a number of institutions, we reversed course and decided to opt in for '25-26 with this provision of managing your rosters, and being grandfathered in allows us to do that." Haslam also notes the Griz are above the 105-man football roster limit, “so we will designate certain student-athletes that, as long as they are here and as long as they are competing and eligible, they won't count against our roster limit." On the potential of cutting sports, Haslam explains the athletic department currently has 15, with softball as the most recent sport. “We did that to keep ourselves compliant with Title IX. And so really there's no sport that we could cut right now, so we do not anticipate cutting any sports." (link)

LSU is hoping the NCAA will allow schools to sell jersey patches, something that Deputy AD for Revenue Generation Clay Harris explains could generate “multiple millions of dollars a year.” According to The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander, LSU has already identified a partner, which officials declined to name, and has mapped out where the patches would go on every jersey, from cross country to football. Most of them would appear on the chest in purple and gold if the rule changes, and Harris notes: “We don't want to have this as some crazy, NASCAR-like situation.” (link)

The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman and Seth Emerson contrast how the SEC and Big Ten deal with the media and note that SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey “has generally been the most accessible commissioner to the media.” South Carolina Executive Assoc. AD/Chief of Staff/CCO Charles Bloom, who served as the SEC’s communications director under former Commissioner Mike Slive, says the league “has had a strong philosophy of cooperation with the media.” Bloom explains that during Slive’s tenure there were very few pro sports teams in the SEC footprint, so in many Southern markets college sports were the only game in town. Even as more pro teams sprouted up in the region, the basic media philosophy has not changed. Bloom: “I use a term that Mike Slive used a lot: We were the holders of a sacred trust. I think what he meant was the league became so identifiable with the region. The roots of the history of the schools and the sports and the conference with the media and the markets and the fan base, that was it. … The ties were strong between the fans and the media and the programs.” The Big Ten “operates in a different manner, but it wasn’t always as insular as it is now,” according to Dochterman and Emerson, who note: “The buttoned-up league has become more guarded in recent years. [Former Commissioner Jim] Delany, who retired in 2020, was not as accessible as his SEC counterparts, but he was responsive to issues impacting the Big Ten and collegiate athletics. [Former Commissioner Kevin] Warren, who left the Big Ten for the Chicago Bears in 2023, was always available. [Commissioner Tony] Petitti, conversely, prefers to keep a low public profile and work for his league outside of the spotlight. However, that low-key philosophy has ceded the public narrative to the SEC, which has happily filled that power vacuum.” More. (link)

The Big 12’s discontinuation of its preseason media poll “possesses sneaky significance for the sport writ large,” according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who writes that the league is “jammed with parity that creates drama and chaos on a weekly basis. Any team can rise to the top in a given season – just as Arizona State did in 2024 after being picked last in the preseason media poll. But some observers might not view parity as a blessing. Some might see a stigma that goes something like this: If the team picked last by the media can win the conference, it must not be a very good conference.” To illustrate his point, Wilner points out the Sun Devils were unranked in the AP and College Football Playoff rankings for Weeks 10 and 11. Once they were ranked in the AP poll, the CFP ranking was never more than three spots different. “All of which suggests Arizona State’s last-place projection in the Big 12 preseason media poll undoubtedly impacted its position in the AP poll as the season progressed. And it would appear the skepticism carried over to the CFP selection committee. Put another way: Had Utah, which was picked to win the Big 12 last summer and slotted No. 12 in the AP preseason poll, produced exactly the same set of results as ASU throughout the fall, the Utes assuredly would have received better treatment by the pollsters in November. And by the committee, as well. … Given the likelihood that August pretenders will morph into November contenders — and given the lack of transparency in the CFP selection process — the Big 12’s preseason poll carries more risk than reward. The bigger problem, folks, is the committee itself. We suspect the Big Ten would agree.” (link)

Purdue Fort Wayne has introduced a new branding package, effective immediately. From the Mastodons’ release: “The new logo incorporates the traditional Purdue gold color (golden, HEX CFB991), matching the same gold used on the rest of Purdue Fort Wayne's campus marks. Also new is a horizontal version of the primary logo with Purdue Fort Wayne to the side of the logo. The vertical option, with Purdue Fort Wayne above the Mastodon logo, will be the primary mark and used in most instances. Fort Wayne is now featured on all marks in a larger, bolder font.” (link)

Louisville Volleyball HC Dan Meske comments on the change to this year’s practice start date: "I would say it's a double-edged sword. It's nice to have the opportunity to practice more. I think announcing that four weeks before that actual date when everybody's planned their summer around a different date is the other part of that. … Volleyball players are planners, typically. So if I look at my summer and I've got two months where I'm really going to grind and I'm going to get bigger and faster and stronger and and then I've got this week before our season when I can decompress and spend some time with family and get my mind right for the season, you just can't take that rest away. That's part of the carrot that's dangling in front of you as a reward for all the hard work you've put in. For us, we're struggling with how to take advantage of these practice opportunities but still reward our program and our team for the hard work they've done this summer and give them some well-deserved time off. I don't know exactly how it's going to look like for us, but it's probably going to look different for a lot of programs." Marquette HC Tom Mendoza also weighs in, noting that “it's a good thing that we are moving toward summer access like football and men's and women's basketball. It's a good direction we're heading." He adds: “I wish we had more head's up so our athletes and our staff and our university can plan, but after COVID I think people are used to doing things last-minute ... It's a good thing eventually, but whether this is a good way to implement it, it's too late to worry about that. We'll just handle it the best we can." More. (link)

NCAA SVP of Policy and Governance Kevin Lennon, the longest-tenured national office employee, will retire in August after being with the NCAA since 1986. President Charlie Baker: “Kevin was one of the first people I met when I became president of the NCAA. We discovered that he and I had been student-athletes at Harvard around the same time. While I had been unable to hold onto any job for more than 10 years, Kevin had become an increasingly important part of the NCAA's story for almost three decades. When I asked him to take on a newly created leadership role overseeing governance shortly after I arrived, he made clear to me that he would give it all he had, but he wouldn't commit in that moment to do it for the long term. He has delivered on both parts of his commitment. His leadership, steadiness and wide circle of colleagues and relationships has made the work we've done for the past two years much easier and better than it would have been without him. I wish him joy and happiness in whatever he chooses to do next and will continue to call him for guidance and advice.” (link)

NCAA VP of Academic and Membership Affairs Dave Schnase will also retire in September after three decades in Indianapolis. President Charlie Baker: “There may be no one who knows as much about the history, challenges and changes as Dave Schnase does. His contributions, mentorship, leadership, steady hand and calm and thoughtful way of handling issues and people make him a unique presence at the NCAA, for members and staff alike. As we've worked through the challenging task of modernizing many elements of our regulatory approach at the same time we continue to oversee and manage the rules we have, he has been at the center of this management and decision-making process. Dave made clear to me he wouldn't be at the NCAA forever but made clear to me he would be here to help us work our way through many of our biggest challenges which he has done. I wish him the very best as he moves on to whatever his next act will be and thank him immensely for all he has given to college sports and the NCAA.” (link)

The NCAA DI Committee on Legislative Relief has issued a blanket waiver for Designated Student-Athletes to enter the transfer portal from July 7 to August 5, per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who adds: “There is no limit to how many athletes a school can designate as a DSA. Deadline to submit DSA lists is July 6. However, the DSAs are now free to transfer this summer and ‘must be released from their contract prohibition’ with their existing schools, per documents. A reminder: An athlete is eligible to be placed on a DSA list if he/she (1) would have been removed from the school's 2025-26 roster due to new roster limits; (2) was an eligible member of a team in 2024-25; (3) was recruited & assured by a school of a 2025-26 roster spot.” (link)

New Mexico State Acting AD Amber Burdge tells the Las Cruces Sun-News’ Nick Coppola that she supports the decision to launch a national AD search and expects to be among the top candidates. "It's a great thing for us, because all I want is the absolute best thing for New Mexico State and New Mexico State athletics. I am excited to be a solid candidate in that search because I've had two-and-a-half years of experience here. I know that I love this place. I know that I love Las Cruces. Another candidate may be researching us and say how much they can benefit us, but I can talk about having been here and falling in love with this community and this campus, and what this athletics department can do for this community and with this community." Burdge also says when it comes to revenue-sharing that “I'm not going to share the specific numbers because I don't want another school out there negatively recruiting against us because of this, but I will say that we've come up with a system that supports all of our student-athletes." The Aggie Athletic Club has raised $168K since the 2025-26 fundraising window opened, and Burdge notes: "It's not exactly where we want to be. You've been talking about all of the changes and where we're going, and we've added one more reason that we need to fundraise, and that is internal NIL, or revenue sharing." More from Burdge. (link)

Georgia is looking to bring another major concert to Sanford Stadium on April 25, 2026, and has partnered with talent acquisition firm Does Entertainment to narrow down potential acts. Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks: “The idea of bringing concerts back to Sanford Stadium has been in the works for a long time, and I am excited to see it become a reality. Our partnership with Does Entertainment allows us to attract top talent to Athens for a one-of-a-kind show. While nothing compares to a football Saturday at Sanford Stadium, a big-name concert inside one of the most iconic venues in sports creates a tradition that Bulldog Nation and the surrounding area will enjoy.” Sanford Stadium last hosted a concert 12 years ago. Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines the role MMR companies will play going forward and Playfly Sports Properties President Christy Hedgpeth, who joined the company in 2021, points out that “there was a such a gap, even though it’s starting to narrow, between what pro leagues were doing to unlock their full revenue potential and what colleges were willing to do. You’re seeing some growing pains, I think, where college is coming to terms with the fact that monetization is a professionalized skill.” According to Brown, that means more colleges are “starting to open up sponsorship categories that would have been very controversial just five or six years ago.” Hedgpeth cites corporate logos on fields as an example and says she expects college to “eventually” get to a point where corporate sponsorships will be permitted on uniforms. She also sees a critical opportunity in data. “Generally speaking, brands are going to make rational decisions. They’re going to want to evaluate what they’re getting for the price that’s on the table. That’s why data is so incredibly important, because brands have a lot of choices where to invest their money.” Furthermore, Hedgpeth sees a lot of potential in integrating student-athletes’ IP with colleges’ IP in future MMR-led marketing campaigns. “We know that as much as eight times more engagement on social is possible where an athlete is integrated into a post vs. just a product. There’s an inherent value there.” (link)

Clemson Ventures CEO Michael Drake talks with the Post & Courier’s Jon Blau about the Tigers’ approach to revenue generation moving forward and acknowledges that “we might make a few mistakes, but we're going to get really smart before everybody else gets in this game, and be the leaders and create something that people are going to follow, and I think will be envied." While Drake declines to be too specific about how much Clemson Ventures can generate, he's fully aware Texas A&M sold its multimedia rights to Playfly Sports for 15 years, for an average guarantee of $34M and says: “There's no reason we shouldn't have goals to be in that realm — or more." Drake goes on to say he's "pretty darn deep" into talks with alcohol brands and expects to have multiple sponsors in place ahead of football season, adding: "We are not interested in beer and spirit brands dominating the landscape. We're interested in weaving them into what is already a killer experience at Memorial and Littlejohn and (Doug) Kingsmore (Stadium).” Drake also points to the Watt Family Athletic Performance and Wellness Center, which has a third-floor bistro that could be turned into something like a sports bar. Fans that don't have a ticket in Memorial Stadium could buy one for Watt and watch the game there. Drake: “Certainly, generate revenue. but it's just an experience-enhancer." (link); Blau also shares a look at the Watt bistro. (link)

CBS’ Matt Norlander examines how the House settlement will impact Players Era Festival payouts, and Alabama AD Greg Byrne explains that “UA has a standard agreement with Players Era for the basketball tournament that covers transportation and travel costs. Players Era has separate NIL agreements with the student-athletes for each of the participating schools to pay them for marketing, sponsorship, and endorsement activities that will be done separately from the event and in a manner consistent with the new NIL Go procedures." Another AD who asked not to be named raised the issue of foreign-born college players playing in the event, and Norlander notes that “schools may need to get creative with how their collective deals are paid out months after the Players Era Festival has finished.” Another issue involves how the money will be split among the teams, which is a decision schools will make individually. One HC in the event says: "If you want to give a player $70K, that would be clean, but one guy getting $400K, probably not. You would think there would probably be a line there. I'm not sure what it is, I'm not Deloitte, but north of six figures seems too much." (link)

+ The College Sports Commission has informed Sportico’s Daniel Libit that it “won’t be sharing compensation information for its employees,” and Libit notes: “On one hand, the rebuff is not exactly shocking. The CSC is a for-profit, limited liability company, and such entities—if not publicly traded—are under no legal duty to open their books. On the other hand, this is an entity built on promises of openness and accountability, assuming a role that directly affects the rights and compensation of college athletes. The commission oversees all NIL deals over $600 involving athletes and entities outside their schools. Moreover, as Sportico has previously reported, the CSC has assumed the mien of a nonprofit and suggested it plans to act accordingly.” (link)

Bemidji State AD Britt Lauritsen tells the Bemidji Pioneer’s Jared Rubado that “we’re opting out [of the House settlement] for a lot of reasons. Being a multi-divisional institution and being a multi-conference school, we don’t really know how the House settlement is going to impact schools like us. We have a little bit of time, and I like to frame the next 12 months or so as a viewing period for how this actually looks for the schools that can’t opt out.” Lauritsen also cites roster limits and notes that “we know there’s nuance to that now, but for our programs sitting at 27, 28 student-athletes, that helps us. It gives us depth. Women’s hockey is a great example. … When you have injuries that mount on top of each other, that stuff matters. If you don’t think there’s a big difference between 26 and 28 players, think about those two other players being goalies. What would we have done [after injuries to two goalkeepers last season]?” Lauritsen goes on to remark: “At the end of the day, you have to figure out what attracts athletes to your institution. For me, I’m looking at it like this: if you’re a school that can afford to give out 19 scholarships, that’s great. But if that’s your only purpose to opt in, you can probably do that with the 18 scholarships and Alston money.” (link)

According to the NCAA, “tampering violations occurred in the Oklahoma State women’s tennis program when head coach Chris Young impermissibly communicated with three transfer prospects. During the investigation, Young failed to cooperate when he instructed a student-athlete to withhold information from the enforcement staff. He also violated head coach responsibility rules.” Penalties include a four-year show-cause for Young, three years of probation; a fine of $35K, plus 1% of the women’s tennis program budget; and a reduction by 18% of the average number of official visits (based on the previous four years), among others. Legal Matters…
+ North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has signed into law a bill that exempts NIL contracts from public records, and Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner adds: “North Carolina is now also 1 of the few states to update its sports agent law to account for NIL's role in college athletics. It distinguishes a pro sports services agency contract from an NIL agency contract and requires different language in each agreement.” (link)
+ Former Tennessee men’s basketball student-athlete Zakai Zeigler has dropped his federal appeal for a fifth year of eligibility, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel’s Mike Wilson, who notes that Zeigler’s lawsuit against the NCAA will continue. Zeigler’s attorneys explain in a statement: "While we had hoped to see Zakai back in orange and white, he’s embracing the next chapter of his basketball career with optimism and resolve. We remain committed to pressing his case forward in the trial court, where the core legal issues remain very much alive." (link)
+ Sportico’s Michael McCann takes a look at how the NCAA and former Wisconsin football student-athlete Nyzier Fourqurean are using the House settlement to make their cases against and for Fourqurean’s continued eligibility despite having played four years (including two in DII). In a June 19 letter to the Seventh Circuit, Fourqurean’s attorney, Michael P. Crooks stressed the revenue portion feature of the settlement and called it “direct evidence of the increasingly commercial nature of Division I college athletics.” Crooks added, in his view, the settlement “further illustrates the now direct correlation between eligibility and compensation, as only those eligible to play Division I college athletics at NCAA member institutions will be allowed to receive this compensation.” NCAA attorney Rakesh Kilaru argues the settlement actually hurts Fourqurean’s position in that it “expressly affirms the commitment of the NCAA and its member institutions to the Five-Year Rule.” He quoted language from the settlement stating that allows the NCAA and conferences to mandate that athletes can play four seasons in five years. Kilaru further noted that Wisconsin and the Big Ten are parties to the settlement and have endorsed it. In addition, Kilaru reiterated that the five-year rule “preserves the difference between college and professional sports, and thus preserves collegiate athletics as a distinct product.” Both sides are now awaiting a decision from the Seventh Circuit. (link)
+ Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich reveals that “eligibility lawsuit #24 was filed earlier this week: this one by ex-College of Charleston basketball player Derrin Boyd. He claims he had a $350K NIL offer from Vanderbilt that he would be able to take but for the NCAA's Five-Year Clock rule. Notably, this is our first eligibility lawsuit by a former NAIA player, as Boyd started at Georgetown College. NAIA is included in the Pavia waiver, but the Pavia waiver only applies to athletes still within their five-year clocks and Boyd is not. Boyd has also filed a motion for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to allow him to play in 2025-26 (and find a place for him to do so). Intriguingly, this case has been filed in the same court that heard Diego Pavia's case -- Boyd is a Nashville resident and he's invoking his withdrawn offer to Vanderbilt, allowing him to file in that jurisdiction. No word yet on whether it's been assigned to the same judge.” (link)
