With Texas State planning a Pac-12 celebration party for Monday, the conference is setting its eyes on a ninth football-only member, per JohnCanzano.com’s namesake, who notes that Memphis is “listening.” Canzano: “The conference’s overall strategy is evident. It aims to keep the Big 12 and ACC within view of the front windshield and prepare for whatever happens to college athletics in 2032 or so. Recent Pac-12 branding has been all about positioning. […] Memphis would help fortify the Pac-12 from a football standpoint. UTSA and Rice could provide additional options in the state of Texas and help balance scheduling. There are some others, as well. I’m told Sacramento State ‘does not have traction’ by a well-placed Pac-12 source. […] Saint Mary’s remains in a holding pattern, I’m told by sources. It’s among the potential all-sports candidates or could even be a basketball-only addition.” [Commissioner Teresa] Gould’s focus in adding new members is to make sure, “that they’re adding value in terms of the competitive metrics we want to achieve, that they’re adding value in terms of our national brand and how we’re perceived in the marketplace, that they’re adding value in terms of our commercial enterprise, that they’re adding value in our leadership room.” (link)

Cal Co-ADs Jay Larson and Jenny Simon-O’Neill pen a letter to the Golden Bears community about the vision for the department and their 12-month appointment: “Chancellor Lyons approached us with his vision for this innovative leadership structure in the midst of what is proving to be a period of dramatic change in college athletics. He drew on his experience with leadership development and how organizations can benefit from a paired leadership approach. As long-time students of organizational excellence, we were intrigued and excited to maximize this opportunity to lead together. In addition to our Co-AD paired leadership model, we are looking forward to partnering with Ron Rivera, the general manager of our football program. In this new model, Ron will directly oversee the football program, including personnel and the operating budget, while we will be responsible for the supervision of the other 29 sports and the department support units. […] During the year to come, it will be our responsibility, working in concert with the campus, Cal Athletics leadership and our community of supporters, to build a sustainable financial model – including philanthropy, campus funding, and the creation of new revenue generation streams.” (link)

Virginia AD Carla Williams on the Cavaliers’ investment in athletics: “Without a clear investment in football that is visible, then whether it's conference realignment or media rights or television deals or sponsorships, if you don't invest in the primary driver of this entire industry, then you're sending a message that you don't want to be a part of a national landscape moving forward. We certainly want to be a part of a national landscape moving forward and that starts with a proven track record of investing in the primary revenue driver. […] We want to make sure that we have options at UVA. We need options. Whatever comes down the road, whatever the future holds, we need to make sure that the University of Virginia has options and you can only do that by investing in the primary revenue driver. It doesn't mean that you don't also invest in basketball because we are certainly investing in basketball and our donors have really really stepped up, especially in the last year to to help us with the Olympic sports because that is one thing that UVA is very, very proud of is what's happened with the Olympic sports. So you can do it all. You just have to have a culture that ensures that that is the case.” More. (link)

Central Arkansas has decided to opt-out of the House settlement for the upcoming year. AD Matt Whiting: “We can be an enrollment driver for UCA, and we’re proud of the number of student-athletes we have in our program. Opting in would require us to reduce by a significant amount of student-athletes in our program. So, that’s obviously lost revenue for the university, and during a time where enrollment across the country is declining. And so, it really seems to be counterintuitive to the mission the university is trying to do on the enrollment front, so we feel really the roster limitations piece is the piece that’s kind of tough to get around if you opt-in. We’re going to monitor things. You don’t know what happens in the future, and it’s a unique time. Who knows what will be right for all institutions, but we feel opting out at this time is in the best interest for the University of Central Arkansas.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that revenue share payment facilitators Opendorse and Teamworks “distributed more than $16 million combined from schools to athletes on Day 1 of rev-share Tuesday,” while Big Ten and Big 12 payment system PayPal failed to make its data available. He adds that Teamworks said collectives paid over $71M in June to student-athletes, illustrating the front-loading of payments before the establishment of the new enforcement entity. The Big Ten is reportedly handling things differently as Dellenger observes that the league, not individual schools, is making rev share payments through PayPal on behalf of schools to student-athletes from school distribution holdings. “Schools are submitting to the conference office those athletes who are to receive payments, the dates of payments and the amounts. The centralized method is one way for schools to avoid complications that come with distributing millions in rev-share from a university.” The Big Ten reportedly distributed rev share payments to student-athletes from three of its schools on Tuesday, while the remainder of league schools are expected to have revenue distributed by the end of July. The front-loading of payments by many schools in the spring resulted in a smaller number of Tuesday distributions. (link)

Following up on a previous item that appeared to highlight Chattanooga’s plan to provide more than $2.6M in rev share to its men’s basketball program and how that served as an example of the huge opportunity non-FBS football schools now had in hoops, Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes: “I received info on Chattanooga’s rev share plans. While the article made it appear the school is paying athletes $4.8M in 2025-26 (and the [men’s basketball] team $2.6M) that’s not accurate. The total school number is less than $1M and the [men’s basketball] number is less than that.” (link)

Kentucky is phasing out employee and faculty discounts on tickets to athletic events by the 2027 season, according to Kentucky Sports Radio’s Nick Roush. In men’s basketball and football this fall, eligible employees will receive a 20% discount on up to two season tickets, as well as a 20% discount (reduced from 50%) on the associated K Fund donation for those seats. In women’s basketball, baseball, volleyball and gymnastics, single-game admission for university employees will transition to a paid model in 2026. Additionally, employee discounts for football and men’s basketball season tickets will no longer apply in 2027, and the athletic department will no longer provide complimentary tickets for Olympic sports. North Alabama AD Josh Looney talks with Athletics Admin consultant KC Smurthwaite about the transition to DI and explains: “People always talk about surviving the four-year transition, but the next four years after it – that’s a critical window where your trajectory gets set. And we made the decision early on that we wanted to thrive in it. There was no time to get that sigh of relief when the transition ended; it was already go time.” Looney cites five core talents he looks for in coaches and staff as the Lions look to build a sustainable program: positivity, selflessness, resilience, decisiveness, and a refusal to accept the status quo. He also says that while the mission is to build a program that endure, the Lions “place a big emphasis on celebrating firsts. It could be the first time we achieve a competitive milestone, a new GPA record, or a new revenue milestone – really anything that’s measurable. At the beginning of every meeting, we’re celebrating something. But at the end of the day, it’s always about pushing forward. Status quo is the enemy. … I say this often, but alignment here is real. Our advancement VP (Kevin Haslam) is a former coach and AD. Our development staff works side-by-side with campus. We’ve approached donors about supporting athletics and departed with a gift for the School of Business – and the other way around as well. We don’t care where they choose to support, as long as they’re connected to UNA.” (link)

The U.S. Supreme Court has granted review of two cases in Idaho and West Virginia that will focus on states’ ability to ban transgender student-athletes from competing on women’s sports teams. Sportico’s Michael McCann writes: “The two cases present two interrelated legal questions. The first is whether Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination in public school programs and activities, permits or prohibits a transgender ban. […] The second question is whether transgender bans comply with the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause, which forbids states from treating citizens differently on the basis of impermissible reasons—including whether a citizen is a man or woman. The key issue for the Supreme Court is whether a distinction on the basis of one’s sex at birth for eligibility to play sports is permissible or impermissible.” The Court is expected to hear oral arguments during its next term with a decision likely to come next summer. CollegeAD provides the details of freshly minted Northern Arizona AD Uri Farkas’s contract, which is “set to run until June 30, 2027, after which the Board and Farkas will meet to discuss extending the contract for an additional two years. Farkas will earn an annual base salary of $220K.” Farkas will have the opportunity to earn up to $50K annually in performance-based bonuses tied to the University's academic and athletic achievements: Annual APR bonuses are as follows: 965-970: one week's salary; 971-984: two weeks' salary; 985 and above: three weeks' salary. Annual Team GPA bonuses: 3.0-3.19: one week's salary; 3.2-3.39: two weeks' salary; 3.4 and above: three weeks' salary. For winning or tying for the Big Sky Presidents' Cup: Farkas will earn $4,583 (one week's salary). He’ll earn the same for making the NCAA Tournament in men’s or women’s basketball. That figure increases to two weeks’ salary for advancing to the Sweet 16 and four weeks’ salary for winning the national championship. For a top-two football finish in the Big Sky, Farkas can earn $4,583. That increases to $9,166 for making the FCS Playoffs: $9,166 and $18,333 for winning the FCS national championship. If NAU receives over $1M in major gifts in a fiscal year, Farkas will receive a $20K bonus. Should NAU terminate the contract without cause, Farkas will be paid 40% of his remaining base salary as a lump sum, with the remaining 60% paid in monthly installments. (link)

More on the meeting between Sun Belt leaders on Tuesday to discuss the future of the conference membership following Texas State’s departure to the Pac-12. One source tells the Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen: “I would simply call it a discussion. There was no vote.” Mettlen also reports that “sources said that while Louisiana Tech, Western Kentucky and others from Conference USA could be options to replace Texas State in 2026, there are some who favor continuing with 13 members for at least a year. Taking that route would allow the current members to each take a slightly larger share of the conference revenue while also waiting to see if other dominoes fall in conference realignment. Potential drawbacks to sticking with 13 would include being forced to change scheduling and conference championship formats without the two seven-team East and West Divisions.” Any vote on expansion requires approval from 10 of 13 board members to go through, but one source tells Mettlen a vote may not be called unless there is a clear consensus. Auburn AD John Cohen and Football HC Hugh Freeze addressed recruiting concerns, and Auburn Live’s Justin Hokanson drills down to the main point: “August 1 is the first day recruits can receive written NIL offers for what they can expect to earn at a specific college. Until then, it’s all verbal offers. Cohen and Auburn believe when some programs begin to have to put their money where their mouth is, the written offers might not match the verbal offers.” To that end, Cohen remarked: “August 1 is the first day that a prospective student-athlete can receive an offer on paper. Okay, that’s a big day. It’s not rumor, it’s not innuendo, it’s not this person says this. It’s an offer on paper. We’re a good distance away from August 1, and we’re a really good distance away from December. And we’re also operating, as you guys have been discussing, in a brand new landscape, a landscape in which you bring in somebody at a certain offer and guess what? The person at that position and their agents are going to look at a coaching staff and a GM and say, well, ‘I’m the starter at that position and that’s not my number.’ There’s some real things that are about to take place. There’s some really new things on the horizon that have never happened before. And I’m here to tell you we’re going to do this the right way. We’re going to do it just like Coach Freeze just mentioned. We’re going to be honest, we’re going to be forthright and we’re looking very much forward to August 1 and dates beyond.” More. (link)

Tulane AD David Harris joins Collegiate Sports Associates President Drew Turner from the 2025 NACDA Convention for a conversation about the search process that led to his role with the Green Wave, the search process that resulted in the selection of Football HC Jon Sumrall, how to navigate the confidentiality aspect that is necessary as a sitting AD and more. Harris explains that the process “can be involved enough to where it can easily take your attention away from the job that you’re doing. And when you’re a sitting AD, that can be a dangerous spot to be in. So, you will see situations where someone will get into a bad spot because they can’t maintain the proper balance between their current job and the job they're looking to pursue.” As such, Harris explains that “one of the things you’re thinking about is how is the process going to work, how can my confidentiality be protected. If I’m talking to you because you contacted me about a job, I’m saying, ‘Drew, talk to me about this process because I can’t have my name come out. If my name’s going to come out, I need to have the job. So it can’t come out that I’m interviewing. Those things need to be confidential between me, you, the search committee and my president, who’s the one person I’m going to talk to.” Lots more in the full conversation, which is now live on Collegiate Sports Connect. Chattanooga can provide up to $4.8M in revenue sharing, with roughly $2.66M going to men's basketball, $1.31M to football, $485K to women's basketball and $350K earmarked for other sports. Mocs AD Mark Wharton: "Those percentages are pretty on target, but that $4.8M is really high at our level.” As for why UTC is distributing more to men’s basketball, Wharton explains: “We have more of a chance to be exposed nationally and can make some money in hoops if successful." (link)

Montana AD Kent Haslam confirms the Grizzlies are opting into the House settlement and explains: "The initial settlement had no provision for accommodating roster limits through what's now called 'designated student-athletes.’ But as it unfolded, there was an opportunity to preserve our roster limits by grandfathering in your current squad sizes. That completely changed our mindset. Like a number of institutions, we reversed course and decided to opt in for '25-26 with this provision of managing your rosters, and being grandfathered in allows us to do that." Haslam also notes the Griz are above the 105-man football roster limit, “so we will designate certain student-athletes that, as long as they are here and as long as they are competing and eligible, they won't count against our roster limit." On the potential of cutting sports, Haslam explains the athletic department currently has 15, with softball as the most recent sport. “We did that to keep ourselves compliant with Title IX. And so really there's no sport that we could cut right now, so we do not anticipate cutting any sports." (link)

LSU is hoping the NCAA will allow schools to sell jersey patches, something that Deputy AD for Revenue Generation Clay Harris explains could generate “multiple millions of dollars a year.” According to The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander, LSU has already identified a partner, which officials declined to name, and has mapped out where the patches would go on every jersey, from cross country to football. Most of them would appear on the chest in purple and gold if the rule changes, and Harris notes: “We don't want to have this as some crazy, NASCAR-like situation.” (link)

The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman and Seth Emerson contrast how the SEC and Big Ten deal with the media and note that SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey “has generally been the most accessible commissioner to the media.” South Carolina Executive Assoc. AD/Chief of Staff/CCO Charles Bloom, who served as the SEC’s communications director under former Commissioner Mike Slive, says the league “has had a strong philosophy of cooperation with the media.” Bloom explains that during Slive’s tenure there were very few pro sports teams in the SEC footprint, so in many Southern markets college sports were the only game in town. Even as more pro teams sprouted up in the region, the basic media philosophy has not changed. Bloom: “I use a term that Mike Slive used a lot: We were the holders of a sacred trust. I think what he meant was the league became so identifiable with the region. The roots of the history of the schools and the sports and the conference with the media and the markets and the fan base, that was it. … The ties were strong between the fans and the media and the programs.” The Big Ten “operates in a different manner, but it wasn’t always as insular as it is now,” according to Dochterman and Emerson, who note: “The buttoned-up league has become more guarded in recent years. [Former Commissioner Jim] Delany, who retired in 2020, was not as accessible as his SEC counterparts, but he was responsive to issues impacting the Big Ten and collegiate athletics. [Former Commissioner Kevin] Warren, who left the Big Ten for the Chicago Bears in 2023, was always available. [Commissioner Tony] Petitti, conversely, prefers to keep a low public profile and work for his league outside of the spotlight. However, that low-key philosophy has ceded the public narrative to the SEC, which has happily filled that power vacuum.” More. (link)

The Big 12’s discontinuation of its preseason media poll “possesses sneaky significance for the sport writ large,” according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who writes that the league is “jammed with parity that creates drama and chaos on a weekly basis. Any team can rise to the top in a given season – just as Arizona State did in 2024 after being picked last in the preseason media poll. But some observers might not view parity as a blessing. Some might see a stigma that goes something like this: If the team picked last by the media can win the conference, it must not be a very good conference.” To illustrate his point, Wilner points out the Sun Devils were unranked in the AP and College Football Playoff rankings for Weeks 10 and 11. Once they were ranked in the AP poll, the CFP ranking was never more than three spots different. “All of which suggests Arizona State’s last-place projection in the Big 12 preseason media poll undoubtedly impacted its position in the AP poll as the season progressed. And it would appear the skepticism carried over to the CFP selection committee. Put another way: Had Utah, which was picked to win the Big 12 last summer and slotted No. 12 in the AP preseason poll, produced exactly the same set of results as ASU throughout the fall, the Utes assuredly would have received better treatment by the pollsters in November. And by the committee, as well. … Given the likelihood that August pretenders will morph into November contenders — and given the lack of transparency in the CFP selection process — the Big 12’s preseason poll carries more risk than reward. The bigger problem, folks, is the committee itself. We suspect the Big Ten would agree.” (link)

Purdue Fort Wayne has introduced a new branding package, effective immediately. From the Mastodons’ release: “The new logo incorporates the traditional Purdue gold color (golden, HEX CFB991), matching the same gold used on the rest of Purdue Fort Wayne's campus marks. Also new is a horizontal version of the primary logo with Purdue Fort Wayne to the side of the logo. The vertical option, with Purdue Fort Wayne above the Mastodon logo, will be the primary mark and used in most instances. Fort Wayne is now featured on all marks in a larger, bolder font.” (link)

Louisville Volleyball HC Dan Meske comments on the change to this year’s practice start date: "I would say it's a double-edged sword. It's nice to have the opportunity to practice more. I think announcing that four weeks before that actual date when everybody's planned their summer around a different date is the other part of that. … Volleyball players are planners, typically. So if I look at my summer and I've got two months where I'm really going to grind and I'm going to get bigger and faster and stronger and and then I've got this week before our season when I can decompress and spend some time with family and get my mind right for the season, you just can't take that rest away. That's part of the carrot that's dangling in front of you as a reward for all the hard work you've put in. For us, we're struggling with how to take advantage of these practice opportunities but still reward our program and our team for the hard work they've done this summer and give them some well-deserved time off. I don't know exactly how it's going to look like for us, but it's probably going to look different for a lot of programs." Marquette HC Tom Mendoza also weighs in, noting that “it's a good thing that we are moving toward summer access like football and men's and women's basketball. It's a good direction we're heading." He adds: “I wish we had more head's up so our athletes and our staff and our university can plan, but after COVID I think people are used to doing things last-minute ... It's a good thing eventually, but whether this is a good way to implement it, it's too late to worry about that. We'll just handle it the best we can." More. (link)
