Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that Sun Belt executives held meetings yesterday about expansion but no decision is imminent. “The league will continue discussions on adding a member or staying at 13 schools. Several possible expansion targets were discussed, most notably Louisiana Tech. While remaining at 13 schools means a slight increase in revenue distribution with Texas State's exit, the decision comes with complications, including the potential elimination of divisions in football, the reconfiguration of schedules and higher travel expense[s] for schools. Sun Belt expansion targets in Conference USA would be faced with a large price tag to leave. Exiting CUSA schools owe two years of distribution and must buy out of the conference's grant-of-rights - a total expected to be at least $5M and as much as $10M.” (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White was the highest-paid public school AD in the country for 2024-25, bringing home a total of $3.35M. White’s contract allows a maximum of $600K in bonuses within an academic year. Without the cap, his incentive bonus would’ve totaled $632,500. The Knoxville News Sentinel’s Adam Sparks breaks down all of White’s bonuses: $247,500 (9% of base salary) for Learfield Directors’ Cup top 10 finish; $137,500 (5%) for Academic Progress Rate high score; $82,500 (3%) for football making College Football Playoff; $82,500 (3%) for men’s basketball reaching Sweet 16 (no additional bonus for reaching Elite 8); and $82,500 (3%) for women’s basketball reaching Sweet 16. Sparks notes that Texas AD Chris Del Conte had a similar base salary of $2.525M, but his bonuses were capped at $250K. Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt, Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts, Ohio State’s Ross Bjork and Michigan AD Warde Manuel are among the other highest-paid ADs among publicly available schools. Kansas State AD Gene Taylor joins Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer from the 2025 NACDA Convention to share his perspective on the House settlement, discuss the biggest challenges for the Wildcats as they navigate this next phase, explain how he's adapting conversations with donors and more. When it comes to talking to donors, Taylor points out the Wildcats’ “facility needs have been pretty well taken care of. We’ve been very fortunate. We got a lot of our massive facility projects done and behind us, and they’re all fairly new. That’s part of the messaging. We’re not going to come back to you in the next five to six, seven years with another massive capital campaign. This is our capital campaign and here’s why it’s important. Some understand it better than others. Some you need to have a little more one-on-one and lengthy conversations, but they do know it’s not going to stay static at the $20.5M, that it’s going to continue to go up.” Taylor also says for donors who’d rather not contribute to revenue-sharing, “we have scholarship needs, we have operational needs. We have salary needs. We want to keep good coaches.” Full conversation now on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

More from NBC’s Nicole Auerbach on the new world of revenue sharing as Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione weighs in: “I do know that there are any number of people out there that don’t want this to work. There will undoubtedly be challenges to both the process as well as what one entity deems as fair market value versus another entity thinking that it’s a fair market value agreement. We’re again expecting there to be some bumps. Part of that is clarity in the process but also focus and discipline and following through on enforcement because people are still of a mind to believe it when they see it. … This is not, in its current form, a long-term solution. It’s not. It’s something that we have to make work now, as we work on a better path for exchanging rights and compensation to athletes that has a more durable element to it with contracts that can stand up to conflicts and pressure.” Learfield EVP for NIL Growth & Development Solly Fulp: “Real NIL is the exchange of goods and services between a student-athlete and a brand partner. I think that that was what it was intended to be all along.” (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair talks about the Rockets’ decision to make a significant financial commitment to volleyball, telling the Toledo Blade’s Kyle Rowland: “It’s the fastest-growing women's sport in America. It just overtook women’s basketball. As you think about youth and the demographic changes, what’s coming next from a pipeline standpoint, there are more young ladies in that sport than ever before. When you combine the demographic shifts with the popularity, it almost becomes a no-brainer, frankly, for a school in our climate. We’ve got a lot of great sports, and I certainly don’t put this one above any others, but I think the revenue upside versus the investment needed tells a different story and really puts a finger on why you should invest.” (link)

Six female student-athletes have filed a federal Title IX class action lawsuit, accusing Stephen F. Austin of violating sex discrimination laws after the school earlier this year eliminated women’s golf, bowling and beach volleyball. Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “According to the lawsuit, the affected athletes – including beach volleyball players and bowlers – were informed their programs were being shuttered via a series of 10-minute Zoom calls on the morning of May 22. The cuts were effective immediately, a move the plaintiffs characterize as ‘stunning’ in both its timing and delivery.” The athletes also, per Libit, argue that the programs’ cuts have “‘exacerbated’ the school’s longstanding pattern of Title IX noncompliance, pointing to a “glaring example” in the 2022–23 Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act data showing that female athletes received only 34.8% of varsity athletic opportunities at the university despite women comprising 62.8% of the undergraduate student body.” Libit also notes the plaintiffs are represented by a legal team which includes noted Title IX attorneys Arthur Bryant, John Clune, Ashlyn Hare and local Texas counsel James L. Sowder. Both Bryant and Clune have represented separate groups of objectors to the House v. NCAA settlement, with Clune having filed notice of an appeal last on behalf of his clients. (link)

Penn will update records set by transgender swimmer Lia Thomas and apologize to female athletes "disadvantaged" by Thomas' participation on the women's swimming team, part of a resolution of a federal civil rights case. As part of the agreement, Penn will restore all individual DI swimming records and titles to female athletes who lost out to Thomas and send a personalized apology letter to each of those swimmers, according to the Education Department. Penn President Larry Jameson: "While Penn's policies during the 2021-2022 swim season were in accordance with NCAA eligibility rules at the time, we acknowledge that some student-athletes were disadvantaged by these rules. We recognize this and will apologize to those who experienced a competitive disadvantage or experienced anxiety because of the policies in effect at the time. … Our commitment to ensuring a respectful and welcoming environment for all of our students is unwavering. At the same time, we must comply with federal requirements, including executive orders, and NCAA eligibility rules, so our teams and student-athletes may engage in competitive intercollegiate sports." James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis and Director Shane Metzler highlight the key changes in the 2025 NCAA Agreed-Upon Practices (AUP) Guide. Those changes impact institutional NIL revenue share, Alston awards, postseason expenses, NCAA and conference distributions and facilities and maintenance operations. On postseason expenses, they write: “Institutions are now required to report all post-season expenses by sport – not just football bowl games. This change provides greater visibility into the budgetary impact of NCAA championship participation across all athletic programs. This includes adding a new subcategory (41B) to capture additional post-season football expenses, and the introduction of a new category (42, 42A, 42B) to include post-season expenses related to all other sports. The category definitions for Coaching Compensation (22 & 23), Team Travel (28), Sports, Equipment, Uniforms and Supplies (29), Game Expenses (30), and Spirit Groups (33) were also updated to note that any expenses related to NCAA championships should be reported in categories 41 (football) or 42 (non-football).” Full breakdown. + As part of the Senate’s recently passed reconciliation bill, dubbed as the “Big Beautiful Bill,” higher ed institutions with fewer than 3,000 students will be exempted from taxes on their endowments. Inside Higher Ed’s Jessica Blake provides more context: “Originally introduced in 2017 under the first Trump administration, the current 1.4% tax on investments only applies to a select few of the wealthiest colleges that had more than $500K in endowment value per student. Under the first draft of the Senate bill, colleges would pay different rates depending on the value of their endowment per student, and some could pay as much as 8%. The tax applied to any college that receives federal financial aid and enrolls more than 500 students. But the rate hike faced a lot of pushback, particularly from small liberal arts colleges that argued the tax would be debilitating and harm their ability to provide low-income students with scholarships. The Senate finance committee appears to have listened.” (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham has agreed to a two-year extension through July 2029. He will remain in his current role until the summer of 2026 before transitioning to Senior Advisor to the Chancellor and Athletic Director. He will be succeeded as AD by Roush Fenway Keselowski (RFK) Racing President Steve Newmark, who will come aboard as Executive Assoc. AD. UNC notes that Newmark has experience in “sponsorships, marketing, team operations and contract negotiations” and will “initially focus his attention on strategies tied to revenue-driving initiatives, particularly related to UNC's Football and Men's and Women's Basketball programs” before transitioning to AD in 2026. Cunningham: "As part of my last contract extension, I committed to working with University leadership on a succession plan that would positively position Carolina Athletics and our 28 teams for the future. I appreciate the opportunity to extend my contract and enhance my role in a way that will allow me to continue to support our outstanding student-athletes, coaches and staff as we transition and navigate the changing athletics landscape." (link)
|
More from North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham, who says of the transition announcement: “How do great programs continue to be good over long periods of time? I think you need a succession plan. And I talked about that, it was in my last contract. And we have to develop a succession plan and there's been so many changes going on in college athletics since the Alston case. It’s really changed a lot, and I think we've made great progress here. I think we've done a lot of things that have positioned Carolina to be in a good spot…but I also think there’s a whole new horizon that we have to be prepared for and I think that’s what we’re trying to do is set ourselves up for that success.” Regarding his role as Senior Advisor, Cunningham says there’s still a lot to be done, including the Carolina North project. “We’re going to add 5K students over the next 10 years. Where are they going to live? … So, need student housing out there. We need a public-private partnership with some kind of economic development. We need affordable housing for the community. And we still haven’t made a decision about the basketball arena. The basketball arena can be renovated here, it could be built new on campus or it could be built out there. So I think some of those strategic decisions need to be made, and I think we've got to start thinking about more of a 10-, 20-, 30-year plan as opposed to, ‘Oh my gosh, we’ve got rev-share, how are we going to cover that?’ I think it allows somebody that has a lot of experience in intercollegiate athletics, even more experience on a college campus [to say], ‘How do we grow this place to be the best that we can possibly be?’” More from the Carolina Insider podcast. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that in total 319 schools opted into the House settlement. (link); New announcements include Indiana State (link), New Hampshire (link), North Florida (link) and Northwestern State. (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports that plaintiffs’ lawyers in the House settlement “say they are exercising their right to have the data used to arrive at that [revenue-sharing] limit audited because they have questions about the figures. If the audit finds that the cap should have been greater than $20.5M, court intervention could be involved. All of this may not affect schools this year, but it could impact them in the future.” Plaintiffs’ attorney Steve Berman explains that “for the sake of getting this started July 1, we are willing to use” $20.5M as the cap. “But if that turns out to be different, there will have to be some adjustment. … We have questions about the information we’ve gotten.” Berkowitz further notes that “at issue, among other items, is whether certain revenues connected to luxury suites have been accounted for correctly, Berman said. Also, the settlement states that as part their audit rights, the plaintiffs’ lawyers are entitled to ‘receive an accounting from an agreed-upon accounting firm’ of all revenue categorized on the schools’ annual financial reports to the NCAA under a miscellaneous ‘Other Operating Revenue’ category ‘to determine whether, in the (the plaintiffs’ lawyers’) opinion any such reported revenue is more properly reportable as one of the agreed-upon revenue categories and should therefore be included’ in the schools’ combined total. Any disputes about the data are to be settled by Magistrate Judge Nathanael Cousins, who has been appointed as a special master by U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken.” The NCAA declined to comment on the matter, but Berman adds: “We’re going back and forth with the NCAA about what information they have given us. If we’re not satisfied, we’ll go to Judge Cousins. This will not happen overnight. We’re asking questions about all of this. That’s our job. … We don’t know that there’s a controversy. … We are examining all of this stuff, making sure revenue was put into the right bucket.” More from Berkowitz. (link)

How much will it cost to build a national championship-caliber football roster in the rev-share era? “The answer is, if anybody knows that or could tell you that, they’re not being honest,” according to Alabama AD Greg Byrne, who adds: “Obviously you’re going to have to be competitive in the revenue-sharing world that we’re in, but there’s a strong desire across the board to make the agreed-upon House settlement work. The people who are saying it won’t work or saying that they know it won’t work almost all have ulterior motives and interests that benefit them for it not to work.” For comparison’s sake, AL.com’s Nick Kelly polled six people across college football who’ve written and/or reviewed player contracts in the past year to gauge how much player acquisition cost pre-House and shares some takeaways. First, the highest-paid QBs in the Power 4 received deals of at least $1M, and sometimes more. “That was undisputed among those surveyed.” Offensive tackles have also been at a premium. “The highest-paid blockers in the Power 4 have been paid in the high six-figure range and some even $1M+.” Some of the other highest-paid positions: cornerback, wide receiver, edge defender and interior defensive linemen. As for what those figures will look like going forward, one personnel director outside the SEC tells Kelly: “There really is no true market. The market is determined by how desperate somebody is to gain a position or to beat somebody out in recruiting. In the December portal cycle, a good wide receiver, you might have said we can get a good enough wide receiver for $350K. When it comes to the spring portal window and what you thought you had gotten in December is not what you thought you got, when the numbers are limited, when the pool is small, a kid can negotiate for a higher price than what he may have gone for in December.” (link)

With revenue-sharing now the law of the land, Washington AD Pat Chun tells NBC’s NIcole Auerbach that “where you allocate those dollars is going to dictate the present and the future of your program. In the most recent environment, it seemed to reward the schools that spent the most money. In this new environment, it should reward the schools that spend money the smartest. … And there’s the market correction coming for all these sports, specifically football, men’s basketball – one that’s maybe a couple years in the making.” Purdue AD Mike Bobinski says of the previous model: “For somebody to just slide you a few dollars because they want you to come to or stay at a certain school and call it NIL, that’s make-believe, that’s not a real thing. That is the recruiting insanity that we’ve allowed to drive too many behaviors. … What happened during March, April, May and June, leading up to the actual settlement implementation date was really a hangover from the last two and a half years of insanity. People were like, ‘OK, this is my last chance before I go on that diet, so I’m going to go to that all-you-can-eat buffet one more time and really load up.” Chun adds: “We have to get out of this fraudulent world. Bobinski: I’d like to think we’ve gotten that out of our system.” Lots more. (link)

Every Iowa State student-athlete will receive some portion of revenue, and Cyclones AD Jamie Pollard remarks: “I don’t know anybody else in the Big 12 that is doing it. I’m not saying they’re not, but I have not heard of anybody else doing it. … If you’re one of the athletes that makes the roster, then you will receive a payment. And we just felt like that is part of our culture. We wanted to be able to stand before our student-athletes and say, although we’re distributing the majority of the money to those athletes who are in the sports that have earned the money, all our athletes will participate in the revenue sharing model.” As for how much each sport will receive, Pollard explains: “We have [decided how the revenue will be split], but it is somewhat fluid. We’re just not talking about it publicly. What I will tell you is we're distributing our resources based on how the money is earned. And yet, all our student athletes, every student athlete at Iowa State, will participate in some form or fashion in the revenue sharing.” (link)

Opendorse has released its fourth annual report on the state of NIL, which finds that total spend on NIL products and services has increased from $918M in 2021-22 to $2.26B in 2024-25. Of particular note, the 2024-25 figure nearly doubles the previous year’s total of $1.17B. Opendorse projects that figure will increase at a slower rate moving forward, climbing to $3.15B in 2028-29. Broken down into market segments, the report indicates that student-athletes receive 29% of commercial NIL dollars – just 10% from products (e.g., jerseys, video games), but 80% from services (e.g., posts). Meanwhile, athletes receive 90% of collective NIL dollars, with the remaining 10% going to overhead and commissions, and 95% of collegiate NIL dollars, with less than 5% going to support staff or agent commissions. For many student-athletes, especially those in women’s basketball and Olympic sports, the highest earning potential is still in college. Opendorse assessed more than 1,000 student-athletes who earned at least $100K and found that 69% remain college athletes, 19% compete professionally in the U.S. or abroad, 10% entered the workforce out of college and 2% played professionally but have since retired. For the upcoming season, Power 4 schools are expected to spend an average of $20.5M in rev-share, with football accounting for 65.6%, men’s basketball accounting for 20.3% and women’s basketball accounting for 6.6%. The Group of 6 are expected to share an average of $4.3M with 61.9% earmarked for football, 21.4% for men’s basketball and 9.4% for women’s basketball. Lots more data in the full report. (link)

Wisconsin is increasing prices for 65% of its men’s basketball season ticket locations over the next two seasons, with the most expensive seats seeing a 46% increase by the 2026-27 season. UW explains in a message to fans: “With ticket prices unchanged for the past decade and new challenges ahead in collegiate athletics, these updates are essential to help maintain our competitiveness in the Big Ten and nationally. This is not a reseating of the Kohl Center, and all current season ticket holders will have the first right to order their ticket locations at the new price level.” UW also points out that its ticket prices rank 14th out of 18 programs in the Big Ten while ranking third in wins and winning percentage since 2015-16, the last time it increased ticket prices. Ticket prices for the most expensive seats – center court in the lower bowl – will rise from $858 last season to $1,002 in 25-26 and $1,252 in 26-27. Those prices include a "recommended minimum per seat contribution" that is attached to most seats in the arena and varies depending on location. The recommended minimum per seat contribution could be as much as $300 for the 2025-26 season for the best seats or as low as $0 for many seats in the 200 and 300 sections. That contribution will increase to as much as $550 per ticket in '26-27 for the top seats while remaining $0 for baseline seats in the 200 level and general seating in the 300s. More from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Mark Stewart. (link)

WMT has integrated its Tillion platform, which uses AI for ticket pricing and distribution, with Ticketmaster and its Pricemaster product to deploy dynamic ticket pricing for the South Carolina women’s basketball program. SBJ’s Ethan Joyce: “A four-week pilot of this new capability for WMT created dramatic results. In this first use case, Tillion adjusted prices for Gamecocks women’s basketball 327 times, resulting in 759 more tickets sold. Projected across a full academic year and accounting for historical ticketing data, South Carolina athletics could see a potential 40% increase in ticket revenue with the help of Tillion’s new integration.” WMT Founder/CEO Andres Focil: “The focus was to bring real-time, market-aware pricing to primary ticketing, which is something really that hadn’t been done for this particular sector.” Joyce notes the Tillion integration with Ticketmaster “now creates a pathway for more joint clients between the two companies. WMT works with more than 100 teams at the pro and college level, including 40% of the schools in Power Four conferences.” Focil adds: “You’re going to see more rights holders in college take more control to drive revenue and to better serve their fan base. We are able to give that power back to the institution or the team.” (link)
