Seton Hill AD Chris Snyder departs the university after 21 years “to look for new opportunities and challenges,” effective today. Snyder: “Together we have achieved so much: improved academic performance, significant growth of our rosters, and vastly expanded and upgraded our facilities. We have also integrated principles within athletics to make us look like a member of NCAA Division II. As I depart, Seton Hill is well positioned moving forward.” The institution will form an athletics management team to carry out the AD role in the short-term. (link)

NCAA SVP of Policy and Governance Kevin Lennon, the longest-tenured national office employee, will retire in August after being with the NCAA since 1986. President Charlie Baker: “Kevin was one of the first people I met when I became president of the NCAA. We discovered that he and I had been student-athletes at Harvard around the same time. While I had been unable to hold onto any job for more than 10 years, Kevin had become an increasingly important part of the NCAA's story for almost three decades. When I asked him to take on a newly created leadership role overseeing governance shortly after I arrived, he made clear to me that he would give it all he had, but he wouldn't commit in that moment to do it for the long term. He has delivered on both parts of his commitment. His leadership, steadiness and wide circle of colleagues and relationships has made the work we've done for the past two years much easier and better than it would have been without him. I wish him joy and happiness in whatever he chooses to do next and will continue to call him for guidance and advice.” (link)

NCAA VP of Academic and Membership Affairs Dave Schnase will also retire in September after three decades in Indianapolis. President Charlie Baker: “There may be no one who knows as much about the history, challenges and changes as Dave Schnase does. His contributions, mentorship, leadership, steady hand and calm and thoughtful way of handling issues and people make him a unique presence at the NCAA, for members and staff alike. As we've worked through the challenging task of modernizing many elements of our regulatory approach at the same time we continue to oversee and manage the rules we have, he has been at the center of this management and decision-making process. Dave made clear to me he wouldn't be at the NCAA forever but made clear to me he would be here to help us work our way through many of our biggest challenges which he has done. I wish him the very best as he moves on to whatever his next act will be and thank him immensely for all he has given to college sports and the NCAA.” (link)

New Newman AD Kenyon Spears was introduced in Wichita last week. Spears: “The biggest thing I think I can help elevate is relationship-building, being out in the community and making sure the community understands who Newman is and what Newman is all about. We really, really need to elevate that and in return that usually brings people to campus, whether it’s for sporting events or for campus events, because at the end of the day we’re all one team and we want to grow together.” On some of his early priorities: “I want to make sure we are meeting the needs of enrollment, making sure we are meeting the needs of all of campus and the community, making sure coaches understand who I am and what our plan is moving forward with scheduling, budgets, scholarships and all of those things, which we will get accomplished very soon.” Asked about building relationships with student-athletes: “You’re going to see my face. I’ll be at practices. I’ll pop into games. I’ll make sure to say hello, whether you’re in practice or out of practice. I was a student-athlete so I understand what the rigors of a day-to-day are and what that looks like. The biggest thing is they’re going to see me lead by example, be supportive of them on and off the court. They’re also going to see that we’re going to have some fun.” (link)

FloSports Co-Founder/CEO Mark Floreani tells SBJ this is the “golden age of streaming” and notes he is keeping an eye on ESPN’s DTC launch this fall. “It continues to validate what we’re doing, but it’s going to be a premium price point. It is expensive to do that. We’ve always had kind of a premium price point, because we have to create a business. We’re profitable. We’ll be doing over $200M next year. So we’re a real business. So it’s exciting to see them go full-commit, because…it helps us.” That said, Floreani admits he’d like to see the ad dollars start “flowing faster because this is where the eyeballs are and they’re trackable. They’re real. You can’t fake streaming. But it’s not as fast as it should be. We want more advertising. … The return on [connected TV] is solid, so it is starting to be more of a focus, and we think it should accelerate because we think that it’s a better product and it’s easier to track.” Floreani also points out that “we’re going to have 20 conferences starting next season. Behind ESPN, we’re probably the No. 2-player in terms of total tonnage for college. We’re either No. 1 or 2 in terms of women’s sports streaming.” (link)

More Higher Ed…
+ Montevallo has raised tuition 3.5% and eliminated 24 jobs in the face of an $8M deficit that was due in part to significant cost increases and infrastructure projects, like fortifying its power system. Interim CFO Deanna Smith tells ABC 33/40 the university does not expect more staff cuts now, adding: “We will do some critical reviews of programs and sports and the entire campus and the way we do business.” (link)
+ The Higher Learning Commission has approved Gannon to gain control of Ursuline as the institutions work towards their full merger in December 2026. Gannon President Walter Iwanenko Jr.: “Higher education is in a transformational moment filled with challenges – from changing demographics to major disruptions to international student recruitment. We believe there is an opportunity to build domestic student enrollment – but you need scale to do that. Ursuline on its own – just like Gannon on its own – would find it difficult to navigate the years ahead, but together they can create something special that is stronger than the parts. What’s more, this unites two Catholic schools and preserves a century’s-long legacy of faith-based education.” (link)
+ Purdue Northwest will discontinue 18 academic programs, with 11 of those to merge or consolidate, as part of over 400 program reductions across the Hoosier State after a new state law that requires approval from a state commission to continue programs that do not graduate enough students. (link)
+ As part of the Senate’s recently passed reconciliation bill, dubbed as the “Big Beautiful Bill,” higher ed institutions with fewer than 3,000 students will be exempted from taxes on their endowments. Inside Higher Ed’s Jessica Blake provides more context: “Originally introduced in 2017 under the first Trump administration, the current 1.4% tax on investments only applies to a select few of the wealthiest colleges that had more than $500K in endowment value per student. Under the first draft of the Senate bill, colleges would pay different rates depending on the value of their endowment per student, and some could pay as much as 8%. The tax applied to any college that receives federal financial aid and enrolls more than 500 students. But the rate hike faced a lot of pushback, particularly from small liberal arts colleges that argued the tax would be debilitating and harm their ability to provide low-income students with scholarships. The Senate finance committee appears to have listened.” (link)
