Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman caught up with House settlement namesake Grant House about his involvement in the case, how it concluded & more. Notably: “Yeah, I think this was never going to be perfect. I always thought if this is where it started and ended, that wouldn't be a mission success. I really see this as the zero to one and really after the settlement had some finality to it, really taking that from one to 100 and giving this as precedent gives athletes leverage. And so I think one of the pros in a lot of the successes out of this is giving athletes more of a seat at the table and now being present there. I think giving athletes a share of the pie that now exists or the 20.5, not just for scholarship, separate from NIL as well now being allocated out. And obviously schools can opt in or opt out of that as well. So there's a willingness there. Schools can decide if they want to partake in it or not, but I think for the first time the revenue is actually being shared. It's really being allocated in different ways and schools will disclose or not, but everything that's been happening under the table for NIL for years is now just happening over the table. And I think that's one of the biggest things that people aren't acknowledging, but there's accountability finally, and there's some reliability and there's a lot of responsibility that isn't just expected from top down, but more broad spectrum with the athletes involved too.” House also discussed the impact on his own mental health: “I appreciate you acknowledging the heaviness to that as well. And it's something that at the time I just recently reflected. I really, because of my upbringing, a lot of positivity, a lot of optimism, a lot of support. I really hadn't experienced such high levels of negativity in my life at all until this process and especially the last year. And to answer the first question with that inundation of all that as a major wave, I would say it didn't really come in a trickling fashion. I didn't know how to handle it. I knew I needed to see, seek out mental health professionals. I was seeing some at the time for sport, but doubling down on that and being proactive, I just was getting flooded with this. And I didn't know how to handle all these emotions. And so my first step was removing myself from social media. I remember I got over a hundred messages in 10 minutes, especially when the Cal Poly news broke, and I was out of competition at the time as well. And so I was like, I can't deal with this right now. I don't want to. And I think it's just best if I moved away and fast forward four months. I just got back on social media yesterday because I took that time to process.” Lots more. (link)

On the heels of a record setting fundraising year, Connecticut plans to share $18M+ in year one of the revenue sharing era. The Huskies raised $50.9M in FY25, up from $29M the year prior. The athletic department self-generated $62.7M in FY24, $59.7M in FY25 and is projecting $81.2M in FY26. AD David Benedict: “This didn't just happen because of last year. It happened because of things we've been doing the past four or five years. What we're doing in fundraising, how we're staffing, what we're doing in tickets, what we're doing in our sports. The hiring of Coach [Jim] Mora, the hiring of Dan Hurley, the retention of coaches along the way. All the stuff we've invested in and made very difficult decisions about, well, guess what? We're very fortunate to be going into this new era in the situation we're in.” Lots more from Benedict on ways to bring in more money, but he is emphatic that “we would never consider removing ‘Gampel’ from [Gampel Pavilion]. Could there be something that exists in concert with Gampel? We’re certainly investigating that potential opportunity.” (link)

Colorado AD Rick George’s latest thoughts & insights on how the Buffs are right-sizing in order to meet the demands of revenue sharing: “It’s a tough time for a lot of schools out there, because nobody’s just sitting on money. You’ve got to make some changes and do some different things. We’ve been looking at our expenses, and how do we lower our expenses, and how do we lower our game costs and have a better net there? It’s not just in (generating) revenue, it’s in expenses, too. I think we’ve been really good in managing our expenses over my tenure here. [...] We’ll grow our revenue significantly this year, but it’s not enough. We’ve had to make some cuts. We haven’t filled some positions. We’ve restructured different areas just to be able to meet this challenge. It’ll be a tough year for us fiscally; the next three years, probably.” On how the department will distribute rev share monies per sport: “It’ll be a revenue-based model, based on the revenue that sport generates.” George also says: “Every sport will get something.” (link)

TCU AD Mike Buddie points to key facility upgrades on his docket with one key note: “These next two or three seasons are the most important college football seasons in recent history of TCU as we anticipate another conference realignment shuffle between 2029 and 2031.” Buddie also points to the need for another practice court that could be used by both hoops programs, as well as volleyball. On the baseball front: “Lupton Stadium probably needs a face lift. It’s time to modernize Lupton and create a little bit more fan amenities that currently exist.” Buddie on the needs for tennis: “Our tennis center only has five indoor courts which is counter intuitive to playing six matches. We’ll look at potentially building out our tennis center and then improve little things like parking and game day experience. All those things will be discussed this summer with our leadership team.” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione reflects on year one in the SEC: “It’s the gauntlet everybody said and we expected, but you know what? That’s what we signed up for. That’s where we want to be and we are so so happy we’re a part of the SEC. If anything that has happened over the course of this year, is that it validated over and over that moving to the SEC was and will be great for the University of Oklahoma.” More. (link)

Utah State AD Diana Sabau & Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy sit down with Learfield EVP Deana Barnes to discuss how a move to the Pac-12 will impact revenue generation opportunities. Sabau: “Thankfully for the five of us who are emerging into the Pac-12, we have a value that maybe has been a little bit understated and not had the impact on our campus because we were just expected to be really good in whatever that sport was, maybe it was basketball, maybe it was football. Now with this emergence into a new conference, it really gave us a moment to look at the revenue that we had been capturing and how we can we grow that as we become a Pac-12 member and become a challenger brand? For Utah State we did some really deep soul searching, deep dives and we determined through some national data and some local data, our tickets were so underpriced. Yes, we are selling out everything, but we weren’t really at the value we needed to be at. So we’ve done some analysis with that and advancing our price structures and our calendars to give people a little longer to pay for their season tickets. [...] We’ll also be launching a new recruitment and retention fee on our tickets, so that we can create revenue for some of those sports that aren’t necessarily revenue generating. So it’s a long tail for some of these sports to eventually have a pot of money to share with their student-athletes.” Lots more on AthleticDirectorU. (link)

Tulsa, which has the smallest enrollment of any Division I school, is not necessarily disadvantaged by that fact. Golden Hurricane AD Justin Moore: “The private school and the nature of how we utilize financial aid on campus for all of our students, in combination now with the House settlement and taking away scholarship limits, we’ve been able to utilize that to our advantage which really helps us in this new era, particularly for some of our non-revenue sports. There have been some advantages for sure being at a small private school.” Also from Moore: “We’re in the American Conference, which is the best Group of 6 conference now. The conference wants to continue to invest and compete at a high level and so everyone in our conference had to opt-in, but we would all have anyway.” Tulsa will split up revenue sharing as follows: 75% for football, 15% for men’s basketball, 5% to women’s basketball and 5% to the rest of the programs. Also from this clip, Football HC Tre Lamb sank a hole-in-one while playing a round with Men’s Golf HC Brandon Wilkins. (link)

Athletic Admin’s consultant KC Smurthwaite writes for Hero Sports on how the Mountain West’s looming rights deal(s) could be impacted by the recently announced Pac-12 agreements: “Look, we’ve all seen the wild narratives floating around on social media or pushed by beat reporters still on the Pac-12 payroll. These stories — often seeded by PR firms hired to undermine the Mountain West’s value — suggest they’re working behind the scenes to keep other networks away. Is that true? I don’t know. But PR 101 says you always need a spin, and that’s a pretty good one. Is that spin actually true? Absolutely not. Yes, CBS probably isn’t coming back as a primary partner. And yes, some of the top brands are gone. But the Mountain West still owns something every network wants: live, western football content. Especially in those late-night Hawai‘i windows. That inventory is still valuable. We’re in a sports media world where even Netflix is kicking the tires on live college rights. Apple has dipped its toe in. ESPN and Fox are still fighting over everything. There’s no reason the Mountain West can’t sell what it has to one (or several) of them — even if the payout isn’t Pac-12-level, it’s still going to be better than nothing. In fact, don’t be surprised if the Mountain West’s next deal improves slightly.” (link)

The Daily Press’ David Teel chronicles former Virginia President Jim Ryan’s advocacy for UVA athletics and the ACC and is told by former longtime Virginia Athletics Foundation Executive Director Dirk Katstra, who now serves as the university’s Senior Executive Director of Principal Gifts, that Ryan and Hoos AD Carla Williams “were aligned, and his support of football was evident given the investment that’s occurred the past 5-6 years. Obviously, athletics had to raise the money for it, but it’s nice when you have your president talking about the importance of football being good and the facility progress.” Katstra also remarks that “when [the athletic department] decided what the priorities were, he got behind it and would talk about it and engage with donors and weave it into his speeches that were not in an athletics setting. … Of the presidents I had the privilege of working with, he probably did more in that vein than the others. Not saying they weren’t promoting athletic initiatives, but he very much wove them together (with the academic side) consistently.” (link)

Teamworks SVP of Business Development Kevin Barefoot joins Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer from the 2025 NACDA Convention in Orlando. Barefoot provides insight on the company's latest offerings, including how the Teamworks GM and Teamworks Wallet products will integrate and help athletic departments seamlessly implement the revenue sharing. Barefoot also forecasts what the future holds for college athletics and acknowledges the pace of change makes it difficult to predict, but “for the foreseeable and immediate term, I think we’re going to see more consolidation and integration. That’s something that we’ve been a key part of and, frankly, has been one of the reasons that we’ve grown in the way we have is we can offer integrated tech solutions to not only athletic departments, but pro organizations around the world. … And then certainly we’re making a big bet on data-driven player evaluation. At Teamworks we have a unique vantage point because we work with all 32 NFL teams. We work with 80% of pro organizations in North America. We can see the gaps that exist between pro organizations and collegiate organizations today, and one of those big gaps is data analytics. In the NFL, on the low side, NFL teams have two data scientists – PhD data scientists. On the high side maybe it’s like eight. Not a single athletic department in the country that I’m aware of employs a PhD data scientist full-time for college athletics. So, that’s a gap. We’re making a big bet that we can drive a lot of innovation and a lot of value in player analytics because I think ROI on athlete spend is going to become increasingly important.” Full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. Colleges and universities boasting a high percentage of international students could face a credit risk as a result of federal government targeting of those individuals per a new release from Moody’s Ratings. Inside Higher Ed’s Johanna Alonso reports that those most at risk are the 11% of American institutions where international students make up more than 20% of the student body as well as those already dealing with financial struggles. From the Moody’s report: “The reduction in international students presents a credit risk for universities heavily reliant on this demographic because of potential declines in tuition income, as international students typically pay full tuition fees. Additionally, with declining numbers of high school students over the next several years in the U.S. leading to fewer domestic students, universities intending to fill the gap with more international students may fall short.” Overall, Moody’s calculations note that about one in five colleges’ and universities’ EBITDA (earnings before interest, depreciation and amortization) margins would shrink by 0.5 to 2.0 percentage points, potentially pushing them into negative territory, but observe that the model does not account for any institutional steps taken to mitigate those losses, especially at wealthier institutions. New Hawaii AD Matt Elliott talks about navigating decisions in his first week on the job: “We’re having meetings every day where we’re making decisions already, and that’s the nature of the business. This thing moves fast, and you’ve got to be ready to respond. If there’s a deadline — the NCAA’s got a deadline or we’ve got to make a decision about something else, or budgets are due, whatever the case may be — we’re going to make those decisions and not miss deadlines. But, obviously, I do believe we’re all better when we have all the information that we can to make the best decision. That doesn’t mean we’re going to hide behind ‘gathering information’ to make decisions. But I also think if you’re rash, you might regret it down the road.” Elliott had some pretty standard responses on the House settlement & the potential of expanding rosters, but here’s a notable takeaway on how he views UH’s local broadcast rights in the context of an overall Mountain West deal: “I think that’s part of our job to make sure the Mountain West and any potential media partner understands the value of our games. Whatever sports they’re putting on the table — football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, etc. — we are increasing the overall value. That’s what being a good conference member means. That you are adding value to the overall pot for that conference to go out and be able to negotiate those deals with whatever media partners there are. Yes, we will lean in completely to the Mountain West monetizing those assets because that’s better for the conference and that’s better for us overall.” (link)

Omaha AD Adrian Dowell talks more about the decision to opt out of the House settlement this year, noting that it’s an annual decision “and we will certainly position our department to have this decision to make next year as well.” Dowell also explains that the Mavs are in a unique position “mostly because of our sport portfolio, the overall numbers of student-athletes we have, and also our Title IX situation. That makes us unique where we didn’t feel that pressure to need to opt in like a lot of peer institutions as of late. … Based on what we’re able to offer via scholarships, cost-of-attendance, which started doing for eight revenue sports as of last year, and where we are in the NIL ecosystem, especially thanks to our great partners at the Omaha Bull Market, we are in a really competitive situation with the financial packages we’re able to offer our student-athletes.” Dowel also cites Alston awards as a difference maker and points out that if the Mavs were to opt into the settlement, that $5,980 would count as revenue-sharing, whereas by opting out it doesn’t so long as the amount is not exceeded. “So, there’s a lot of nuances like that that makes this a really dynamic decision that we’ll have to make on an annual basis.” Yet another decision point involves the large number of international student-athletes in the Omaha athletic department, particularly on the men’s hockey team. “The mechanisms and the dynamics around awarding revenue-share to international student-athletes certainly has questions surrounding it that we need to have answers to. Now, ironically, what I can tell you, whether we’re talking about international student-athletes or domestic student-athletes, once we talk about the full amount of scholarships, cost-of-attendance, which is cash, and certainly Alston awards, I can unequivocally tell you they do qualify for those awards under existing rules. So, we’re not talking about their visa status or anything else like that. That provides some clarity with us as well as we made this decision.” Full podcast. (link)

Toledo hopes to sell out its Wednesday, November 5 home game against Northern Illinois. Rockets AD Bryan Blair: “We get three, four hours of a national TV spot. What are we going to do with it? We can show the world an empty stadium and — a good football product, but an empty stadium — and just say, ‘Hey, sorry, it's a Wednesday night.’ Or we can say, ‘This is Toledo, we're different, and this is how different we are.’ We can turn that broadcast into a commercial for northwest Ohio, and show the country … how special this place is.” Beyond that, Toledo has plans to modernize its suites at the Glass Bowl, and potentially add outdoor loge seating and premium field-level options. The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, Sam Khan Jr. & Justin Williams with more reporting on the high-profile signing of offensive tackle Felix Ojo by Texas Tech: “ESPN reported on Friday that Ojo was receiving a three-year deal worth $5.1 million, according to his agent, Derrick Shelby of Prestige Management. Shelby confirmed those figures to The Athletic on Saturday, but three Texas Tech sources refuted that number, with two confirming that Ojo is scheduled to receive an annual compensation of $775,000 per year for three years from Tech’s revenue-sharing pool. Ojo’s deal, according to a Tech source, includes a verbal agreement that can escalate the total value of the contract into the $5 million range if there were a large jump in the revenue sharing cap for schools or if there is minimal regulation of schools’ adhering to the cap, in much the way there has been minimal regulation of NIL since its institution in 2021. Shelby declined to share a copy of the contract with The Athletic but stood by the initially reported numbers.” (link)

There will be no contract modifications for Ole Miss Baseball HC Mike Bianco this summer. The extension signed in 2022 has three years remaining. Rebels AD Keith Carter: “We talked and obviously have a great relationship with Mike. It was a great year, a fantastic bounce-back year. The last two years are just total outliers in his whole career. Mike’s been super consistent and obviously got the natty in ’22. To bounce back this year was awesome. Obviously a disappointing end to the season; I think Mike would tell you that. You run into just a really hot team in Murray State. Just couldn’t get them out. Nobody could get them out there for a while.” (link)

Michigan Men’s Basketball HC Dusty May talks about how his job has changed and says: “Before, there was a lot of just a purity in coaching and developing and investing in people and relationships. And now, that investment in relationships has to go in a lot of different directions. You’re the face of a major, one of the best universities on the planet, if not the best university on the planet, and you’re — along with football and some other sports — the front porch of that university. There’s just a lot more other than coaching that comes with it, but our staff is bigger, we have an extremely qualified staff that makes my life coaching a lot easier and more efficient. But it’s just the difference in how you use your time. It’s not as if you’re spending more time; you’re just using it differently. And you’re a competitor, so the way I look at it is, what’s the best way for us to have really quality people who are the fundraising piece and I’ve studied this stuff for a couple years, because we kinda got out ahead of it at FAU because that was the infancy stages of we didn’t have any at the Final Four and we needed it quickly [after].” May also explains that he “studied start-up companies, because that’s where we are. The one thing I learned from the numerous books I read on tech companies in Silicon Valley and whatnot is that people invest in CEOs. When they believe in the CEO, they will give you venture capital, they’ll give you seed money. If they lose faith in the CEO, then they’re pulling their money and they’re not going to invest. … I feel like as the CEO, I have to really get out in front of people and, I guess, show them our vision of what we’re building and who’s gonna represent them as people who really care about this university and athletic department, so just the role has changed.” (link)
|
May also comments on the state of Michigan’s NIL heading into the 2025-26 season and says he’s “quite certain” U-M was in the bottom five of the Big Ten last year and is equally as certain the team is in the top five this year. “We’ve been creative with fundraising. Our collective works diligently; they’re very invested in helping us create opportunities for our guys. And then rev share is very healthy in the Big Ten. So, yeah, we’ve gone from being the Royals to a team that should be at least in the ballpark of the Dodgers and Yankees.” (link)

Wimbledon debentures, which guarantee seats on Centre Court or No. 1 Court for five years, are being treated as a tradeable asset, and some are selling for a significant profit due to high demand from U.S. buyers, according to Bloomberg’s Elliot Burrin and Jamie Nimmo, who note the “price of debentures has increased significantly, with Centre Court debenture seats for 2026-2030 selling for over £200K, a 75% profit, and No. 1 Court debentures selling for £73K each, a 63% increase from the previous round.” Burrin and Nimmo also explain that “debentures are used by many sports clubs, from Arsenal Football Club to the Minnesota Vikings, to help raise funds often to cover construction costs. Wimbledon debentures were first sold in 1920, with the £100K raised used to fund the building of the Centre Court. Debentures have paid for everything from installing retractable roofs on the two main courts guaranteeing play when it rains – to building 12 new courts in the past six years.” (link)

Beer industry executives are coming to terms with what AdAge’s Jon Springer calls some “sobering truths.” Namely: “Consumers are drinking less, alternatives like canned cocktails have nearly all the momentum, and issues from health concerns to bad weather to upheaval in the Hispanic market contributed to beer spending the [Memorial Day] holiday weekend on retail shelves and not in grill-side coolers. The traditional kickoff of the category’s biggest season was a disaster for beer, with sales dollars down by 6.4% and volume down 7.8% over Memorial Day week. … Those figures represent a further deterioration of dreary first-quarter sales results.” The situation so alarmed beer distributors that their trade organization, the National Beer Wholesalers Association, has called CMOs and brand marketers from the nation’s largest brewers to a summit focused on ways to build beer’s appeal and return it to growth. The country’s two largest brewers – Molson Coors and Anheuser-Bush InBev – separately declined to comment on whether they would send reps. Regardless, CBX Principal Mark Christou says the challenges will continue to impact the entire industry: “Millennials are drinking less. Gen Z hasn’t picked beer up. And Gen Alpha are watching their parents sip adaptogens, pop nootropics, and crack open non-alc spritzers. Culture is changing. Conversation is changing. And beer’s still speaking the old language.” Lots more. (link)
