Ramblin’ Wreck President Ángel Cabrera: “Today’s announcement is a reflection of Georgia Tech’s commitment to elevating the competitive profile of our athletic programs on par with our academic profile. Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill signs a five-year contract extension that would keep him with the league through 2030. Idaho President/Big Sky Presidents’ Council Chair C. Scott Green: “On behalf of my fellow presidents, we are pleased that Tom has committed to our conference for the foreseeable future, thus allowing the Big Sky to continue progressing along the ascending trajectory on which he has skillfully led us for the past six-plus years. His keen grasp of the myriad issues around college sports, their potential impact on our membership, and how to navigate this unprecedented space has us positioned to not just survive but even thrive in today’s modernized NCAA.” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione from his official retirement presser today: “So, here I am in my 33rd year as director of athletics. Simply put, I love what I do. I love being able to serve the University of Oklahoma in so many ways, and as I mentioned, it's not just work, work as people would think. It's really a privilege. However, from time to time, one does take a moment to ponder one's path, one's future. It's a decision-making kind of rubric. When is the right time? When is the right time to pass a baton? When is the best time to make an announcement like this? Not sure it's ever perfect or predictable, but they always say you'll know. Well, I see a friend of mine here, multi Emmy Award winning producer for CBS and it just made me think of a certain kind of moment. There's this iconic moment, if you've ever watched the Masters on CBS, where after the tournament is concluded, Jim Nantz, the previous masters champion and the new masters champion goes to Butler Cabin. They have a few moments of conversation and then just almost punctual, Jim Nantz turns to the chairman and says, ‘Mr. Chairman, it's that time.’ So, now is that time and I have mixed emotions like you would expect, but I'm really excited about the future. So today it's more appropriate like, ‘Madam Chairman, Mr. President, it's that time.’ But I also want to do what's right for everyone involved. That's just the way I am helping facilitate a smooth transition over this upcoming academic year. I wanted to give the university plenty of runway to facilitate a search as I enter my final year as AD. I'm really grateful they've asked that I'd stay on in a role for a couple of years, not only to help with the transition, but there's some really special and key projects for our future here at Oklahoma that I'm going to be very proud to help the whole staff in the university see to fruition. So, I technically won't officially retire until July 28 and that'll mark 30 years of me serving the University of Oklahoma.” (link)
|
Oklahoma President Joe Harroz Jr. also commented on the search to replace Castiglione: “Beyond grateful to have the runway. You know, in most instances you see someone who just leaves and goes somewhere else and you're stuck. And so in true Joe Castiglione fashion, giving us this runway, and he's given us lots of runway, it's going to allow us to go through a process that's not rushed and one that is disciplined and that takes into account the landscape that we are in. And so, I feel great about the timeline. We're not, sometimes in athletics, you have a week or two to do your hiring, whether it's a head coach or an AD, and we're just not in that position. And I've got every confidence in (former AT&T CEO) Randall (Stephenson) and the team around him. Again, it's a search committee and Randall's expertise, as I said before, coupled with advice from Joe and others on that committee. And we’ll be announcing that committee hopefully relatively soon, what that committee looks like. I think you'll see from the composition of it once it's put together, that we've got a committee that can provide both insights into where the landscape is going, also an understanding of our history and tradition and coupling those together to get the right person to be here. So, it's going to take a little time, but I think we'll have the right team being led by Randall to move us forward.” (link)

Yahoo's Ross Dellenger broke the news that the Mountain West has finalized an agreement with Grand Canyon for the school to join the league as a member this fall, a year earlier than anticipated. GCU is expected to be added to MWC schedules for 2025-26. (link)
|
Of particular note on Grand Canyon’s move from the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler: “San Diego State and the other four schools departing for the Pac-12 next year opposed early entry by Grand Canyon, according to conference sources, but were not included in the vote. Once the five gave notice of their intended departure from the Mountain West in late May, conference bylaws allowed for their removal from the board and all voting rights for the ensuing year. There had been talk among the five about filing a lawsuit and seeking an injunction if the Mountain West went ahead with the Grand Canyon decision, arguing that the conference’s remaining seven members were making unilateral decisions that affected the other five without their consent. That isn’t expected to happen, at least not immediately, given the tense nature of other litigation between the Mountain West and Pac-12.” (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark touched on a number of topics at Big 12 Media Days on Tuesday, including his thoughts on the future of the College Football Playoff format and the league’s progress over the past three years under his leadership. According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Yormark is “doubling down” on the proposed 5+11 CFP format, acknowledging it might eventually benefit the Big 12 more in the future. "Five-11 is fair. We want to earn it on the field. It might not be the best solution today for the Big 12 ... but long-term, knowing the progress we're making, the investments we're making, it's the right format for us." With the model being pushed by the Big 12 and ACC and a format decision needing to be finalized by Dec. 1, Yormark expects that ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips will take the same position at that league’s media days later this month and is “relatively confident” that the CFP will expand to 16 teams in 2026. "I have a lot of faith in the selection process. They are doing a full audit of the selection process to figure out how they can modernize and contemporize and how they use data and how certain metrics can be more heavily weighted. The first step is we got to figure out … Where can we improve it? Where can we modernize it? Are we using the right metrics? Are things weighted appropriately or not? … I think on the heels of that, we'll move into the format because I think for the room, people need to get confident, more confident, in that selection process. And assuming they do, which I'm confident they will, we'll be able to then address the format that makes sense. … And ultimately, I'm confident we'll go to 5+11." (link)

Cal State Fullerton will opt into the House settlement and AD Jim Donovan lays out some specifics for the Titans. Fullerton will target a “handful of high-profile sports” for full or increased scholarships as the total cost for all sports would exceed $6M per year. Donovan on how CSUF will approach NIL: “Actually, I envision NIL being handled more effectively by a team. Our ticket sales, corporate sponsorship sales, licensing, and donations all may be utilized for NIL. Our Advancement team would work on soliciting donations and operating fundraisers. Our Senior Associate A.D. and three of our Assistant A.D.'s, with their direct reports, will be working on increasing self-generated revenue, to increase our Distributed NIL paid to student-athletes.” On his feelings about the settlement as a whole: “I don't know if I would describe it as relief. More as informed. I wish I could say excited, but the truth of the matter is that I'm a bit concerned for the future of intercollegiate athletics as we've known it for decades. The House settlement just seems to increase the cost of being a Division I athletics program, although I'm grateful that student-athletes can now receive NIL compensation directly from the institution.” (link)

Per SBJ’s Austin Karp, the Big East and ESPN have reunited for the first time since 2013 via a six-year deal that will provide added content across 22 sports to the network’s DTC platform set to launch this fall. The pact, which reportedly included a paid rights fee, is set to include 25 non-conference men’s basketball match-ups on ESPN+ in 2025-26, as well as a minimum of 75 women's basketball games and 200 Olympic sports events that will be produced by the league in lieu of its previous three-year deal with FloSports under the Big East Digital Network banner. Proskauer’s Benjamin Freeman assisted the Big East. (link)

Illinois and Learfield extend their long-term partnership through a multi-year agreement to embed the media and tech company’s sponsorship and Impact NIL services directly into the athletics department to drive sponsorship revenue and expand NIL opportunities for Fighting Illini student-athletes. In terms of human capital: “Tom Moreland, Illinois Athletics’ Chief Commercial Officer, will oversee strategy and revenue generation for the integrated team. Rob Louthain will continue as General Manager driving sponsorships, revenue, real NIL opportunities for student-athletes, and brand partner activation. Learfield’s dedicated, on-site staff will continue to grow sponsor partnerships, optimize local and regional sponsor opportunities, and drive revenue for Illinois Athletics.” (link)

Florida State QB Tommy Castellanos, a football transfer from Boston College, filed what is now the sixth notice of appeal on the House settlement, USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports. Castellanos’ appeal objects to the College Football Playoff’s role in the settlement. Castellanos is joined by former Seton Hall men’s basketball student-athlete Braeden Anderson in the appeal. (link); Berkowitz with another key legal update: “Plaintiffs in the Johnson case concerning whether college athletes should be considered school employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act tonight filed their response to motions to dismiss the case at district-court level. Not surprisingly, Johnson plaintiffs are using recent developments with schools' being able to make direct NIL payments to athletes to buttress their case.” (link)

Rutgers interim AD Ryan Pisarri is leaving to become the AD at Tufts (DIII), Brian Fonseca writes for NJ.com. Pisarri has worked at Rutgers for 14 years, including the last 11 months as interim AD following Pat Hobbs’ resignation last year. NJ.com columnist Steve Politi adds: “Pisarri had to put out a dozen fires left behind by his predecessor while navigating this turbulent time in college athletics. Rutgers really could have benefited from his institutional knowledge with a new AD.” (link)

Georgia Tech’s search for a new AD “appears to be nearing the finish line,” GoJackets.com reports, identifying Tennessee Senior Deputy AD and Chief Revenue Officer Ryan Alpert as “the first choice for the role.” Also mentioned as candidates: Purdue Deputy AD/SWA Tiffini Grimes, LSU Executive Deputy AD/COO Keli Zinn and UConn AD David Benedict. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution had identified Alpert as a “wild card” in early June. (link)

The Oklahoman offers a list of potential candidates to succeed Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione starting with Mississippi State AD Zac Selmon. Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt, Florida State AD Michael Alford, Florida AD Scott Stricklin, West Virginia AD Wren Baker and Texas AD Chris Del Conte (framed as a long shot) are also mentioned. (link); Sports Illustrated’s Taylor Hodges says that while Selmon’s buyout at Mississippi State is huge (calculated at ~$4M), it shouldn’t be seen as a major obstacle for Oklahoma. “Does anybody really think Oklahoma can’t afford that? So, while Selmon’s contract is an important factor, I don’t think it’ll be a big enough factor to prevent Oklahoma from calling.” (link)

Kansas State AD Gene Taylor said on his “Ask the AD” podcast that the Wildcats will add 39 scholarships as they enter the revenue-sharing era, with 27 earmarked for women’s sports. That will take up about $1M of the $20.5M allowed under the House settlement, with the rest allocated based on how much revenue each sport generates. Taylor: "The majority of the revenue sharing is going to go with the teams that generate the most revenue. So football, men's basketball, women's basketball, but every one of our teams will generate and have an opportunity to share in some of the revenue." (link)

In a wide-ranging Q&A with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, UNLV AD Erick Harper says the process of deciding how to allocate limited revenue-sharing resources among sports is a challenge. “Nobody is going to be 100 percent happy all the time, and that’s impossible for you to make everyone 100 percent happy. You have to do what’s best for your institution relative to your student-athletes. You’ve heard me say it many times — our student-athlete experience is No. 1 for us. However we get that done, we just have to do the best we can.” Harper said UNLV is 2,000 season tickets ahead of this time last year in football with excitement around new coach Dan Mullen. On staying in the Mountain West: “We have to be the best possible UNLV that we can be. And at this point, we looked at everything we did back when all the realignment was going on, and we still feel like we made the best decision for UNLV and the future of UNLV.” (link)
|
Sam Houston State AD Bobby Williams, in a Q&A with KBTX, says the school will not cut any of its current 18 sports as it adjusts to revenue-sharing. Williams: “There’s been so many changes over the course of the last 45-50 years that I was a student-athlete and coach, but the challenges are still the same. You’ve got to find a way to be successful. The biggest struggle that I see over the last two years is the rapid amount of change and how you make decisions, and it changes two weeks later. That’s the most challenging thing for me.” (link)

In a huge win for college hockey, Gavin McKenna, expected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, has committed to play this season at Penn State. Cam Robinson of EliteProspects.com called McKenna “the most high-profile recruit in college hockey history” and a commitment that vaults Penn State – which played in its first Frozen Four this year – to an immediate contender next spring. Robinson: “Armed with one of the country’s most aggressive and well-funded NIL programs, Penn State has increasingly been viewed by top prospects as a viable, and in many cases superior, alternative to the CHL or traditional NCAA powerhouse schools. ‘Penn’s operation is one of the best in college hockey,’ one NCAA source said. ‘They’ve built an environment that's very competitive financially, but also a highly attractive experience for the student-athlete.’” McKenna chose college hockey over the WHL, where he played last year for the Medicine Hat Tigers. As the NCAA men’s basketball committee prepares to meet in Georgia this week, CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander says the NCAA Tournament does not need to expand from its current 68-team format. Key data from Norlander: “Forty years ago, 64 out of 282 teams played in the NCAA Tournament. That's 22.7%. Last season, Division I had 364 teams, with 68 invitations, equating to 18.7%. Every team responsible for the four-point percentage gap over 40 years is a mid- or low-major program. These schools aren't taking away bids from the conferences pushing expansion (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC). Consider: There have been 91 Division I teams added since 1984-85 (with six of those having defected since). Those schools have a total of 168 NCAA tournament bids. Out of those 168 bids, how many earned an at-large spot? One of out those 168 bids, but even more eye-popping: one out of more than 1,400 overall at-larges in 40 years! (It was UCF in 2019 as a member of the four-bid American Athletic Conference, which was a borderline power conference at the time anyway.) [...] Only one school added to D-I in the last 40 years (Stephen F. Austin) has won games in multiple tournaments. Only two teams (Florida Gulf Coast and Florida Atlantic) have reached at least the Sweet 16, both of them Cinderella stories in their own rights -- adding to the appeal of the tournament in process, because the rarity of these stories make them all the more special.” Lots more. Puck’s John Ourand notes an intriguing wrinkle to Skydance and RedBird’s pursuit of Paramount Global, which if approved could allow the NFL to exercise a change-of-control opt-out with its CBS deal and put a huge TV contract on the open market much sooner than expected. The NFL’s current TV deals expire in 2033, Ourand writes, but this wrinkle would allow the league to put its next deal on the open market before MLB and NHL contracts expire in 2028. “Amazon, Netflix, and YouTube have all signaled their interest in expanding their NFL relationships. If the league is able to persuade the TV networks to go early, it could create new packages that give streamers more games while placating the desires of legacy partners.” More on Ourand’s reporting, from Awful Announcing.
