Florida State QB Tommy Castellanos, a football transfer from Boston College, filed what is now the sixth notice of appeal on the House settlement, USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports. Castellanos’ appeal objects to the College Football Playoff’s role in the settlement. Castellanos is joined by former Seton Hall men’s basketball student-athlete Braeden Anderson in the appeal. (link); Berkowitz with another key legal update: “Plaintiffs in the Johnson case concerning whether college athletes should be considered school employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act tonight filed their response to motions to dismiss the case at district-court level. Not surprisingly, Johnson plaintiffs are using recent developments with schools' being able to make direct NIL payments to athletes to buttress their case.” (link)

Rutgers interim AD Ryan Pisarri is leaving to become the AD at Tufts (DIII), Brian Fonseca writes for NJ.com. Pisarri has worked at Rutgers for 14 years, including the last 11 months as interim AD following Pat Hobbs’ resignation last year. NJ.com columnist Steve Politi adds: “Pisarri had to put out a dozen fires left behind by his predecessor while navigating this turbulent time in college athletics. Rutgers really could have benefited from his institutional knowledge with a new AD.” (link)

Georgia Tech’s search for a new AD “appears to be nearing the finish line,” GoJackets.com reports, identifying Tennessee Senior Deputy AD and Chief Revenue Officer Ryan Alpert as “the first choice for the role.” Also mentioned as candidates: Purdue Deputy AD/SWA Tiffini Grimes, LSU Executive Deputy AD/COO Keli Zinn and UConn AD David Benedict. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution had identified Alpert as a “wild card” in early June. (link)

The Oklahoman offers a list of potential candidates to succeed Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione starting with Mississippi State AD Zac Selmon. Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt, Florida State AD Michael Alford, Florida AD Scott Stricklin, West Virginia AD Wren Baker and Texas AD Chris Del Conte (framed as a long shot) are also mentioned. (link); Sports Illustrated’s Taylor Hodges says that while Selmon’s buyout at Mississippi State is huge (calculated at ~$4M), it shouldn’t be seen as a major obstacle for Oklahoma. “Does anybody really think Oklahoma can’t afford that? So, while Selmon’s contract is an important factor, I don’t think it’ll be a big enough factor to prevent Oklahoma from calling.” (link)

Kansas State AD Gene Taylor said on his “Ask the AD” podcast that the Wildcats will add 39 scholarships as they enter the revenue-sharing era, with 27 earmarked for women’s sports. That will take up about $1M of the $20.5M allowed under the House settlement, with the rest allocated based on how much revenue each sport generates. Taylor: "The majority of the revenue sharing is going to go with the teams that generate the most revenue. So football, men's basketball, women's basketball, but every one of our teams will generate and have an opportunity to share in some of the revenue." (link)

In a wide-ranging Q&A with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, UNLV AD Erick Harper says the process of deciding how to allocate limited revenue-sharing resources among sports is a challenge. “Nobody is going to be 100 percent happy all the time, and that’s impossible for you to make everyone 100 percent happy. You have to do what’s best for your institution relative to your student-athletes. You’ve heard me say it many times — our student-athlete experience is No. 1 for us. However we get that done, we just have to do the best we can.” Harper said UNLV is 2,000 season tickets ahead of this time last year in football with excitement around new coach Dan Mullen. On staying in the Mountain West: “We have to be the best possible UNLV that we can be. And at this point, we looked at everything we did back when all the realignment was going on, and we still feel like we made the best decision for UNLV and the future of UNLV.” (link)

Sam Houston State AD Bobby Williams, in a Q&A with KBTX, says the school will not cut any of its current 18 sports as it adjusts to revenue-sharing. Williams: “There’s been so many changes over the course of the last 45-50 years that I was a student-athlete and coach, but the challenges are still the same. You’ve got to find a way to be successful. The biggest struggle that I see over the last two years is the rapid amount of change and how you make decisions, and it changes two weeks later. That’s the most challenging thing for me.” (link)

A new fundraising strategy introduced last year resulted in a 65 percent increase in operating support, a 52 percent increase in total cash and a 34 percent increase in overall fundraising production. Michigan announced its Athletics Career Center will now be known as the Graham Family Athletics Career Center, thanks to a multimillion dollar gift from alumnus Donald C. Graham. The donation will help in “support of career preparation, personal development and citizenship for student-athletes and alumni,” the school announced, noting it will also help with an alumni employment assistance program. In a huge win for college hockey, Gavin McKenna, expected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, has committed to play this season at Penn State. Cam Robinson of EliteProspects.com called McKenna “the most high-profile recruit in college hockey history” and a commitment that vaults Penn State – which played in its first Frozen Four this year – to an immediate contender next spring. Robinson: “Armed with one of the country’s most aggressive and well-funded NIL programs, Penn State has increasingly been viewed by top prospects as a viable, and in many cases superior, alternative to the CHL or traditional NCAA powerhouse schools. ‘Penn’s operation is one of the best in college hockey,’ one NCAA source said. ‘They’ve built an environment that's very competitive financially, but also a highly attractive experience for the student-athlete.’” McKenna chose college hockey over the WHL, where he played last year for the Medicine Hat Tigers. As the NCAA men’s basketball committee prepares to meet in Georgia this week, CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander says the NCAA Tournament does not need to expand from its current 68-team format. Key data from Norlander: “Forty years ago, 64 out of 282 teams played in the NCAA Tournament. That's 22.7%. Last season, Division I had 364 teams, with 68 invitations, equating to 18.7%. Every team responsible for the four-point percentage gap over 40 years is a mid- or low-major program. These schools aren't taking away bids from the conferences pushing expansion (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC). Consider: There have been 91 Division I teams added since 1984-85 (with six of those having defected since). Those schools have a total of 168 NCAA tournament bids. Out of those 168 bids, how many earned an at-large spot? One of out those 168 bids, but even more eye-popping: one out of more than 1,400 overall at-larges in 40 years! (It was UCF in 2019 as a member of the four-bid American Athletic Conference, which was a borderline power conference at the time anyway.) [...] Only one school added to D-I in the last 40 years (Stephen F. Austin) has won games in multiple tournaments. Only two teams (Florida Gulf Coast and Florida Atlantic) have reached at least the Sweet 16, both of them Cinderella stories in their own rights -- adding to the appeal of the tournament in process, because the rarity of these stories make them all the more special.” Lots more. Puck’s John Ourand notes an intriguing wrinkle to Skydance and RedBird’s pursuit of Paramount Global, which if approved could allow the NFL to exercise a change-of-control opt-out with its CBS deal and put a huge TV contract on the open market much sooner than expected. The NFL’s current TV deals expire in 2033, Ourand writes, but this wrinkle would allow the league to put its next deal on the open market before MLB and NHL contracts expire in 2028. “Amazon, Netflix, and YouTube have all signaled their interest in expanding their NFL relationships. If the league is able to persuade the TV networks to go early, it could create new packages that give streamers more games while placating the desires of legacy partners.” More on Ourand’s reporting, from Awful Announcing. The NBA’s Detroit Pistons launched a new fan engagement program called “Pistons Rewards” in conjunction with the Uptop rewards platform. Fans can earn points from transactions with partner businesses like grocery stores and restaurants and redeem the points for exclusive team prizes, including experiences and memorabilia. Pistons Chief Revenue Officer Dan Lefton: “At our core, we’re in the memory-making business — and Pistons Rewards is another way we’re delivering unforgettable moments to our fans. This program allows us to engage in meaningful ways beyond the arena, turning everyday purchases into exclusive experiences and deeper connections with our team, our players, and the Pistons community.” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione will retire after 28 years leading the Sooners, per ESPN's Pete Thamel, who adds Castiglione will remain with the department in an AD emeritus role after his successor is hired to ensure a smooth transition. Thamel: “The timing of the announcement prior to this season, sources said, will give Oklahoma officials adequate runway to hire a replacement during the upcoming school year. The timing of the move will allow OU to make a hire in the upcoming months and transition with Castiglione on campus. Castiglione, 67, initiated the conversation about his retirement with school officials nearly a month ago, per sources, and they landed on this plan together. That job would allow Castiglione to continue to work on special projects at the university, as he intends to live locally.” (link)

Per Sooner Scoop/On3’s George Stoia III, Oklahoma President Joe Harroz announces in an e-mail that “[former AT&T CEO] Randall Stephenson will lead the search for Joe Castiglione's replacement. Castiglione will continue to serve as the AD into the coming year while the search is conducted.” (link)

An update on Stanford’s AD search courtesy of the San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner. “Stanford is close to naming a new AD. Probably next 1-2 weeks. Evansville AD Ziggy Siegfried signs a contract extension that would keep him leading the Purple Aces through 2030. President Christopher Pietruszkiewicz: “Dr. Siegfried's leadership has transformed our athletics department and energized both our campus and the wider Evansville community. I am confident in the direction he is leading us, one that prioritizes competitive excellence, elevates the student-athlete experience, and positions our Athletics programs for bold, strategic growth that reflects the spirit and ambition of our entire University.” (link)

More from Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy and Utah State AD Diana Sabau’s visit with Learfield EVP Deana Barnes to discuss the impacts of moving to the Pac-12. Klassy on leveraging the Pac-12 brand & key revenue opportunities: “Fresno State is one of the proudest, longest, most passionate brands in the country when it comes to college athletics, and it took a leap of faith from our leadership on campus to understand that there is a cost to do this, but they’re banking on the returns at the end of it. They know that by partnering with an iconic brand, with the Pac-12 Conference, and then partnering with some of our peers that also have strong brands, that in turn should increase enrollment, that in turn should increase applications, and then in the back end, increase the better yield for the students that come to Fresno State. So, it’s not just an athletic singular focus, it’s actually for the campus. How does it [provide] value? Our annual fund members are up significantly. I would say Fresno State traditionally has not really looked at every opportunity to monetize every asset they have from a licensing perspective, from a season-ticket perspective, from outside events inside our venues, how we value things. [...] We’re at a critical juncture right now, and not just because the House settlement has been approved and revenue sharing is here. We’re at a point where we have the naming rights up on our basketball arena … we have other huge campus contracts coming up, we have our apparel deal up. We’ve made no secret that we need a new football stadium at Fresno State, so we’re looking at active ways. How do you leverage all those assets and be able to get the funding to create what you need? We don’t want to go out there and tie up future revenue streams, but the reality is, to build a new football stadium is $350M, and we’re looking heavily at concerts. We’ve had three opportunities in the last three months to host concerts at our football stadium, so we know that our football venue can be [used for] more than just seven Saturdays out of the fall. [...] You have to educate your fans on how they can help you monetize different areas of college athletics, because if you don’t share that information, you don’t put it in front of them, they’re not going to understand how they can help.” (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown takes a deep dive on the newly created Vanderbilt Enterprises, inquiring whether the ultimate goal of the organization will be to serve in more of a supporting role, such as Clemson Ventures, more like Kentucky’s new Champions Blue LLC model or something else entirely. According to Commodores AD Candice Storey Lee, the ultimate goal is to provide multiple-level university support with an early focus on revenue generation. “We’re definitely going to generate more revenue, right? So as we think about how we activate our facilities and think about new and bold ways to generate revenue, it’s also about taking advantage of all the work to really leverage athletics and raise our brand, such as the massive new renovation around the school’s football stadium.” Storey Lee also wants to zone in on taking advantage of Nashville’s expanding tourism industry while simultaneously working to grow VU’s footprint. “We have an announced expansion into New York and an expansion into West Palm Beach. We have a number of ways we’re thinking about growing our brand, even beyond the confines of Nashville. … That includes our alumni; that includes businesses and other partnerships. We need the expertise of Vanderbilt Enterprises to really take advantage of that. [We need to] take things that have been successful in non-traditional spaces, and then use them for our benefit.” (link)

Former New Mexico State football student-athlete and current Vanderbilt enrollee Chris Bellamy, a previous teammate of Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia, has joined three others in filing a lawsuit against the NCAA challenging eligibility rules for former junior college athletes according to The Tennessean’s Aria Gerson. Filed in the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Tennessee, the same court in which Pavia successfully secured an extra year of eligibility via court order, Bellamy and co-plaintiffs Demarcus Griffin, TJ Smith and Targhee Lambson, are “seeking an injunction that would prevent the NCAA from enforcing the five-year clock for former junior college athletes as well as a rule that holds former juco athletes to a maximum of three years of NCAA eligibility.” Bellamy originally enrolled at VU in May while the school sought a waiver on his behalf, but it was denied in June. While he is no longer allowed to work out with the team, court documents show that Vanderbilt is holding a roster spot open should Bellamy receive a favorable ruling. Former Southern Utah football student-athlete Lambson is also reportedly interested in playing for the Commodores, but has not enrolled at the school and the football program will not proceed with any potential program addition until he is deemed eligible. Two similar five-year clock relief lawsuits, filed over the winter by SEC baseball players Dylan Goldstein and Alberto Osuna, ultimately proved unsuccessful. (link)

The Athletic’s Matt Baker notes Monday that “a Leon County judge just denied former Florida State men's basketball coach Leonard Hamilton's motion to dismiss an NIL-related lawsuit against him. In the hearing, they set a tentative trial date of August 2026. Some fact-finding happening first, then mediation. The most interesting part of the hearing, to me, was on whether any alleged NIL offers from Hamilton to FSU basketball players/prospects were pay for play. Obviously, that question applies to the entire industry.” Originally, six former Florida State men’s basketball student-athletes sued Hamilton back in late 2024 saying the head coach failed to uphold promises to pay them each $250K in NIL money. The Kansas City Chiefs have branded this season’s Cincinnati-Nebraska football match-up at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium as the Battle Sports Kansas City Classic. Originally a Cincinnati home game as part of a home-and-home contract between the schools, the Bearcats sold hosting rights to Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium as part of post-COVID & conference re-alignment shuffling before the Chiefs stepped in to secure hosting rights to the game in late 2024 through a $2.5M guarantee to Cincinnati. The contest on ESPN will serve as the marquee event of the opening Thursday night of the college football season. Professional Sports Partners helped broker the deal with Battle Sports. (link)

New Mexico State generated almost $296K in season ticket revenue from its 2024 football season according to the Las Cruces Sun News’ Nick Coppola, who notes the amount was part of a larger increase in ticket sales across all sports during the 2024-25 athletic year. Following the completion of the 2024 campaign, Football HC Tony Sanchez also reaped more than $36K as a ticket sales bonus that included both single-game and season tickets “based on a formula that creates a number ‘equal to 10% of that portion of that football season's ticket revenue ... which is in excess of the average of the prior five years, excluding the 2020-21 season.’" Excluded from the bonus were tickets purchased by Van Wagner as well as the 2020-21 season which was shortened to a two-game schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
