Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes the College Sports Commission sent out a memo to Division I AD’s on Wednesday offering further guidance on NIL deals, stating “that most deals that have not been cleared do not meet the ‘valid business purpose’ definition - many of those from collectives.” He further adds that “about 80 deals have not been cleared and can now be resubmitted (one resubmission is permitted). The CSC is expected to notify several more athletes this week that their deals are not cleared as they do not meet the ‘valid business purpose’ definition. Several more deals are expected to remain under review as college executives negotiate with House plaintiff attorneys over the approval of circumvention rules.” (link)
|
The Collective Association chairman Hunter Baddour pushes back on the College Sports Commission memo telling On3’s Pete Nakos: “Today's commentary from the College Sports Commission regarding ‘true NIL’ and ‘valid business purposes’ is not only misguided, but deeply dismissive of the collective organizations and the tens of thousands of fans and donors who fuel them. Collectives were formed in direct response to a market the NCAA had long suppressed – a market that fans, alumni, and communities eagerly supported once the opportunity for fair athlete compensation became possible. These organizations didn't emerge in a vacuum; they grew rapidly because they met a clear and urgent demand. That is the very essence of a valid business purpose. Any attempt to delegitimize the role collectives play in today's collegiate athletics landscape ignores both legal precedent and economic reality. We remain committed to building sustainable, transparent, and effective models that empower student-athletes and engage the passionate fan bases that support them.” (link)

More from Big 12 Media Days as Commissioner Brett Yormark still has his eyes focused on international expansion, despite the league having to pivot away from its original 2024 plans to play football, basketball, baseball and women’s soccer games in Mexico opines Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey. Yormark: “I want this conference to be a global conference. I think we can win globally big-time. We’re having conversations with other countries throughout the world that are very interested in bringing the Big 12 to their marketplace.” Despite the delays with the “Big 12 Mexico” initiative, the league has continued its efforts to extend its influence beyond U.S. borders with Iowa State and Kansas State slated to battle in August at the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, while Baylor women’s hoops has plans to travel across the pond to Paris in November to face Duke. Yormark also noted there’s a “good chance” the Big 12 will play baseball in Mexico City in the spring of 2026. (link)

Phase one renovations at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium are at least 70% completed and on track to be ready for the home opener on August 23 against Fresno State, per Kansas AD Travis Goff, who adds the facility will be accessible without protective equipment on August 1 to allow the Football team to practice in the revamped venue. Capacity will be just above 40K, with the possibility to get to the high 40s once the east side of the stadium is complete. The final number is still flexible as the east side design has not been finalized as Goff wants “a certain level of flexibility to adjust seating numbers.” KU is progressing toward the announcement of phase two, with new municipal incentives and Goff tells the Lawrence Journal-World’s Henry Greenstein: “Any time you look at this thing, you go, ‘Man, it’s a really great reminder that we’ve got to finish what we’ve set our sights and our vision toward.'” (link)

New Northern Arizona AD Uri Farkas during his official presser yesterday: “I’m taking over this position at one of the most interesting, unsettling and challenging times in collegiate athletic history. What I’d like to promise, regardless of our changing landscape, [is] NAU will continue to do three things: We will graduate our student-athletes in the field of their choice, we will provide a world-class athletic experience, allowing our student-athletes to compete for championships and maximize their athletic potential, and we will do both of those things in a fiscally responsible manner.” (link)

The Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen follows up on his recent reporting that Ohio and the Sun Belt weren’t at the top of each other’s lists as far as the Bobcats joining the conference, writing Thursday that “expanding on this, now told Sun Belt ADs are not discussing Ohio at this time. It's presidents that vote, but ADs do a lot of legwork.” (link)

Montana AD Kent Haslam discussed a handful of issues with MTN Sports, starting with perspective on the House settlement: “The line between FBS and FCS has really blurred with the House settlement, other than the governance that's in the NCAA right now, which means you pay $5 million to be an FBS school and you have to have a conference invite to move up. In reality right now, FCS programs that opt in can offer more scholarships than they've ever been able to in the past.” As for a potential FBS move for the Grizzlies: “Right now I don't really know what it means to be an FBS school. Does it mean that the championship's decided by the College Football Playoff and you go to bowl games? Or does some other championship mechanism click into place? Are there three levels in (Division I) where you've got the CFP, you've got a step below that and then you have what maybe is currently FCS at the third level? Who knows? I have no desire to move to the FBS just for the sake of moving to the FBS. But we want to be with institutions that are like-minded and similar to us in mission and focus, and similar in relevance to the states that they reside. No doubt. That's always been important to us.” (link)

The Athletic’s David Ubben, Justin Williams & Chris Vannini asked others around the Big 12 what they think of Texas Tech’s strong push into the rev share era. An unnamed FB HC from the league: “They’ve built the best team money can buy. But if they don’t win the Big 12, holy cow.” Another anonymous coach: “I mean, it’s childish. I think it’s, ‘Hey, look at me. I don’t think it’s good for college football.” And another: “Ridiculous. …They’re not just outbidding, they’re outbidding (other teams) by 3X. Wild, but it will be interesting. If the players are good kids, about the right things and about winning, I think it’ll go great. If they’re about themselves, the first time adversity hits will define them.” More, including: “Don’t hate the player, hate the game. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger has details on an amended college sports bill that could be introduced Thursday in the U.S. House of Representatives and “is on track to progress further than any all-encompassing athlete compensation legislation.” The SCORE Act could still face major revision via markups, and if passed through the House, would need bipartisan support to pass in the Senate. Among the many provisions that would impact the current NCAA revenue-sharing model, the bill would codify the House settlement, preempt state NIL laws and…
+ would require all NIL deals to hold a “valid business purpose” and fall within NIL Go’s fair market value compensation range and anti-circumvention rules
+ would allow the NCAA to require athletes to disclose NIL deals so collected data could be anonymized, aggregated and shared
+ would stipulate that schools earning at least $50M annually in media rights could not use student fees to support their athletic programs (impacting SEC and Big Ten schools)
+ would limit agent compensation to 5 percent of an athlete’s compensation (Yahoo was told by coaches that some agents are charging 10 to 20 percent on some deals)
+ would allow the establishment of a one-time transfer rule and eligibility standards
+ would keep schools from cutting scholarships for injury or performance
+ would require schools to provide athletes with academic support and out-of-pocket healthcare within three years of leaving school
+ would require all schools to maintain 16 varsity sports teams (also the FBS minimum)
+ would allow schools to restrict athlete NIL deals that violate school code of conduct or present a conflict with an existing school agreement (like an athlete having a shoe deal with a different brand than the school). (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark says the important next steps for his conference are to get multiple teams in the College Football Playoff and win a playoff game, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports. Can the league forge a new national identity after losing Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC? Yormark: "I came here to try to make a difference. I wanted another run where I could try to build something, and we're building something. I think we're building something pretty special here. And I don't think anyone would argue that what I inherited and what is there today, we've made incredible progress in a relatively short period of time.” (link)

Ohio is among the schools interested in joining the Sun Belt now that the league is losing Texas State to the Pac-12 next year, the Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen writes. Conference officials met this week to discuss their options, which include two Conference USA schools in Louisiana Tech and Western Kentucky. Another option would be to stay at 13 schools in the short-term future. Ohio is the lone remaining charter member in the MAC. Mettlen: “There’s little indication the Sun Belt is close to extending an invitation to anyone, including Ohio, nor that those Bobcats would be ready to accept.” (link)

Houston is turning to one of its most well-known alumni for the name of a new philanthropic giving society, as the Nantz Leadership Society is named for Emmy-winning sports broadcaster Jim Nantz, who played golf for the Cougars and is a 1981 Houston graduate. The society will have six tiers of donations, starting at $25K over five years, with members given access to private events. Nantz: “As proud members of the Big 12, we are in the big leagues now, and we must contend for conference and national championships. There are no limits. We have the ability to win and win big. Please consider having your voice heard. Let's come together and take our beloved Cougars to the next level. The future is ours to shape." (link)

Minnesota AD Mark Coyle presented a budget to the university’s Board of Regents that projects a deficit of $8.75M, the Minnesota Star Tribune’s Chip Scoggins reported. Coyle cited a “dramatic change in college athletics” with the arrival of revenue-sharing, and noted that last year’s budget projected a $3.5M deficit but ended up within budget by the end of the fiscal year. Coyle said Minnesota will not cut any sports, with reduced operating budgets and a new student fee among the plans for lowering costs and adding revenue. More Coyle: “Everybody is having the same stressful conversations. [...] We have been operating very lean and thin since COVID.” (link)

More from Omaha AD Adrian Dowell on why the Mavs chose to opt out of the House settlement: “For us, it was 'let's jog before we sprint'. Let's maximize what we can do before jumping deep in the ocean. Let's go generate the resources to do it. So for us, it was just a better play to maximize those current opportunities with financial aid before we eventually opt in to the terms of the settlement. [...] I don't think you're going to win any championships just based on a one-year decision. I think it's about putting a strategic plan together to really take advantage of this opportunity. Even though we're opting out in year one, we want to make sure that, if and when we do opt in, we really take advantage and maximize our opportunities to put our student-athletes in position to keep having the success they're having.” (link)

The Athletic’s David Ubben reports Colorado AD Rick George expects football coach Deion Sanders to return to Boulder “in a week or two, probably” after an unspecified health issue had him at his ranch in Texas since late April. George said he has been in constant contact with Sanders since he left campus. Sanders spoke at Big 12 media days but declined to elaborate on his absence: “I’m not here to talk about my health. I’m here to talk about my team.” Despite losing two-way standout Travis Hunter and his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, to the NFL, Sanders expects Colorado to compete for a conference title: “We want to win. We want to win at all costs and be in that championship.” (link)

A 26th lawsuit against the NCAA’s eligibility guidelines has been filed, this one by San Diego linebacker Jagger Giles, who didn’t play any sports as a Cal State San Marcos (DII) freshman and played two years each in junior college and at Idaho State. A new rivalry ready to launch? UCF and Houston have had talks about a “Space Cup” type of rivalry game, UCF AD Terry Mohajir told the Houston Chronicle at Big 12 media days. Both schools are about 30 miles from key NASA facilities, with Houston close to the Johnson Space Center and UCF not far from Kennedy Space Center. UCF has held an annual “Space Game” with space-themed uniforms since 2017, and this year’s game will be Nov. 7 vs. Houston in Orlando. The space rivalry was stoked a few years back when then-Cougars Football HC Dana Holgorsen said: “They don’t say, ‘Orlando, we’ve got a problem.’” (link)
