Tennessee AD Danny White talks about why he believes new Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert will have a big impact for the Yellow Jackets: “What’s unique about Ryan, I moved him around a couple times, in terms of what he was responsible for in Knoxville as we had staff movement and transition, just because I was so confident that even if he had little to no background in an area he would pick it up very, very quickly. He’s very adaptable. [...] This was one (Tech) that just made a lot of sense for him. I think J Batt did some really good work, and Ryan can just take the baton and continue to raise it to a higher level. He’s excited about the coaches that are there, the support once he got to know some of the key stakeholders throughout the process. Regionally I think it’s a really good spot for him. I think he’s exactly the right guy to grow that place to higher levels. He’s really confident he can do that and so am I.” (link)

“I’ve never been in the (SEC) so I only have heard all the rumors (about the SEC paying players) – but I’m pretty sure most of them are true. The one thing that I know from these guys that are on my staff now that have been in that world is they don’t really care to take ‘no’ for an answer. They’re aggressive and they’re relentless. They don’t really care to put restrictions on anything.” That’s more from Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy during Big 12 Media Days. Further: “So now cheating is legal. Now you just gotta know how to do it. There’s guys on our staff that know ‘how to do it.’ They’re great. They know ‘how to go.’ [...] Now you have money being handed to the players, so the challenge is to keep those players in the end when somebody gets desperate and comes in and pays them more than you are, which is going to happen. That is the challenge.” (link)

New UNLV Men’s Basketball HC Josh Pastner sat down with Athletes.org’s Jim Cavale to cover some ground on the rapidly-changing industry landscape. Pastner: “I actually love the new model. I look at it the exact opposite. I have loved it and enjoyed it. I'm the guy that overflows the glass. Of course there are challenges with the current climate.. But just by my natural makeup, I am a very positive person looking in a positive way. I have loved the new model and it can be extremely efficient… so many positives with it. [...] Bringing in a brand new team. The chemistry guys are going to get different payments. Not everyone is equal across the board, just like pro sports. I think the key to that is a few things number one, you still have to be a good evaluator. Secondly, player development. Got to get guys better. Three, I don't think you can play any secrets in this deal. Total transparency within the locker room, Fourth and Fifth, coach your team as hard as you can without worrying they are going to transfer.” (link)

With so much change surrounding college athletics, the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) has been a valuable sounding board, says Ryan White, Razorback Foundation Executive Director, speaking with College.town’s Kristen Eargle on the Career Hustle podcast. “Our landscape and our whole industry has changed. What NAADD has provided is a community for people to come together, to share ideas, a network of folks that you can rely on, a resource that you can call and say ‘Hey, I’m really struggling with this. How are you guys doing this?’” White said the key to keeping up with an industry of constant change is to think ahead: “I continue to try to push my staff to be progressive, be innovative, be the leaders in the industry. I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by very competent, smart people that have helped mentor me through the business and that’s led to success across the board. … Every place that I have been is different. You think about NC State, Virginia and Ohio University. I've taken a lot from it. I always tell people. My experience at Ohio might not be the biggest name on my resume, but I learned the most. I was put in situations to do a lot with less. You wear a lot of hats. As you go through it, you learn from each stop. 'I'm not going to do this. I'm going to do this better.' We are constantly learning and growing as professionals. I've had the ability to work at some really great places and feel extremely blessed” Lots more from the full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

No-haggle pricing on NIL deals? James Madison’s first department-wide athletics general manager is Cliff Wood, who rose to COO at CarMax before joining the JMU staff, first as Senior Assoc. AD for Development, then as the president of the Montpelier Collective before assuming the GM role. Wood: “Everybody calls themself a GM, but those roles are all different. It helps that I was an employee for three years, ran the collective another three and now back as an employee. I thought I understood the compliance rules before they all changed. But I think it’s a little more complicated than most people think.” Dukes AD Matt Roan on how Wood will assist his coaches: “When you have 30-plus years of experience at a Fortune 200 company, the ability to strategize and negotiate and the resources we have in the building already build a framework to support our coaches.” On the department-wide approach to the GM role, Football Asst. AD for Football Administration Matt Transue notes: “All programs operate differently in terms of how they attract and retain talent. So [Wood’s] able to see that from more of a 30,000-foot level working with the different sports. And maybe there’s an idea that basketball is doing, that football isn’t, and vice versa, that he can help navigate and steer us in the right direction.” More. (link)

The Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi argues for transparency in student-athlete rev share deals now that public athletic departments in Florida can use public auxiliary funds to assist with such payments. Bianchi: “These athletes are about to become, in effect, state employees in all but title. And if we hold state employees to a standard of transparency, why should college athletes be excluded? [...] When you start using auxiliary funds — paid by students and derived from public resources — to help fund athlete pay, the old weak argument that ‘these aren’t public dollars’ loses all credibility. And once that line is crossed, then it’s imperative that these salaries be made public. [...] This isn’t a privacy issue. Salaries of public employees — including athletes in this new quasi-employee model — are public because accountability and fairness demand it. It’s how we know when a department is overpaying, when one employee is being undercompensated or when resources are being mismanaged. If we’re going to treat players like pros, let’s also treat the process like a professional one.” (link)

SBJ’s Mollie Cahillane digs into a Performance Research and Full Circle Research study highlighting the shift of sports viewers from cable and broadcast to streaming services with nine in 10 sports viewers claiming to now utilize at least one streaming service to watch live games. Overall, 45% of respondents noted they watch live sports more often on streaming than a year ago with younger audiences, including 63% of Gen Z and 56% of Millennial respondents, leading the charge. Amazon Prime Video is far-and-away the most used by 65% of respondents followed by ESPN+ (39%), Peacock (37%) and Paramount (32%). While the study also noted that streaming can “make fans feel more connected to their favorite teams and sports (48%),” the study also highlighted that with the fragmentation of streaming, 68% of respondents are concerned over costs, while 73% are looking to reduce streaming expenses over the next six months. House plaintiffs attorneys have sent a letter to NCAA and power conference leaders calling for a retraction of the College Sports Commission's guidance on NIL collective deals issued earlier this week, per Yahoo's Ross Dellenger. Jeffrey Kessler and Steve Berman plan to bring the issue before Federal Magistrate Judge Nathanael Cousins, who has been appointed to resolve settlement disputes, writing: “There is nothing in the Settlement Agreement to permit (NCAA and conference) or the CSC, acting on their behalf, to decide that it would not be a valid business purpose for a school’s collective to engage in for-profit promotions of goods or services using paid-for student-athlete NIL. To the extent the NIL payment is for the promotion of a valid business purpose, it is irrelevant whether that payment comes from a NIL collective or any other third party.” A CSC spokesperson responded to Dellenger, stating: “The guidance issued by the College Sports Commission yesterday is entirely consistent with the House settlement and the rules that have been agreed upon with class counsel. The defendants have been in close coordination with class counsel on the key provisions in the memo and will continue to work with them to resolve any concerns they may have.” (link)

All signs point to the Sun Belt adding Louisiana Tech as league Presidents are set to meet on Monday. The Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen: “Unlikely they'd vote if the answer is no. Time for both sides to do their lobbying over the weekend, I suppose. But smart money would be on LT becoming the 14th member of the Sun Belt.” (link)

UCF AD Terry Mohajir Q&As with the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel as Mohajir confirms the Knights are sharing the max $20.5M this year with plans to do so again next year at a 4% increase. NIL Go experience thus far: “We’ve already put five deals through there. Four have been approved and one is pending. The range has been $600 to $10,000 and we’ve had a $10,000 deal go through so far. It’s working [the process] and it’s doing what it’s supposed to do, that’s why I’ve been so optimistic about this new age of college athletics and this new age of college sports. The College Sports Commission that we have, I think it’s working. So, we’ll see. We’re doing it the right way and hopefully everybody continues to do so and follows the terms of this House settlement.” Of note on the facilities front: “We hired a company to do a master plan for us for athletics to reimagine the whole athletics village area. That’s everything from baseball to softball, the whole space.” Lastly, Mohajir says he’s all about the Knights participating in international games, as Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark has promoted, just as long as it doesn’t reduce UCF’s number of home games. San Diego State AD JD Wicker & UTEP boss Jim Senter sat down with College.town’s Kristen Eargle last month at the 2025 NACDA Convention. Senter talks about his experience on the DI Council: “I really haven't been on a lot of NCAA committees, so it's been fairly eye opening to see the process and listen and weigh in on things that I think I might have some insight on or to say something about. But it's been very, very apparent that in my mind that we have not really marched forward making a whole bunch of changes because we've been waiting to make sure that the House settlement happens. So you don't want to get out in front of the House settlement. The other piece of this, the other big elephant in the room is really the CFP, which is an amazing organization. Group of 5 universities like San Diego State and UTEP receive a fair share of revenue from that, and our conferences do. But at the end of the day, no one wants to get out in front of anything that CFP is doing because that's a big chunk of the revenue stream that comes into all of us. So, they have to figure out what they're going to do with the number of teams and the format that will then probably allow some other things to happen like the entire calendar. So right now, we're at odds. All of us are at odds with the calendar because the CFP has moved into another semester, and so it's disrupted everything. So it's almost like you got to push the restart button and say, okay, well let's figure out what you're doing so then we can work our way backwards and get to something that makes sense with the transfer portals, with the recruiting windows, the evaluation, quiet periods, dead periods, contact periods, all those things have got to be readdressed. And so I think a lot of the folks on the Football Oversight Committee, and there's the FBS one and the FCS one, they're trying to work as closely as they can together.” Wicker: “I continue to keep telling our coaches that everything can't be the number one priority. So, if you keep telling me that providing name, image and likeness opportunities for our student-athletes is number one, then something's going to become number two. It used to be facilities was number one, so they both can't be number one. So pick it and then we will reorganize and reallocate resources to the best of our ability. With that being said, even if you can pay players, whatever you can afford to pay 'em, if they go into a locker room that is a dump or a weight room that is 50 years old, they're going to notice it.” More on Collegiate Sports Connect. Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman chats with AVCA CEO Jaime Gordon as rapid change to college athletics impacts Olympic sports of all shapes & sizes. Gordon on the idea some schools have discussed of tiering sports: “...what we've seen historically is you do go to this defunding model and you cut off the oxygen for the most part, and then maybe it's two or three or four years later, you look at that program and you say, ‘this doesn't represent what we're trying to do as our institution. This doesn't reflect what it means to be a then plug in your mascot and hey, it's time to move on.’ It does become a process that winds up ending in elimination, but I also don't want to be ignorant to the need to tier programs. Yes, this is going to sport athletics are going to look different. I don't think that there's anything you can do to not or to protect all sports and say, ‘Hey, we're not going to have any casualties in this space.’ But when it looks at tiering, maybe instead of having two tiers of football and basketball and everyone else that ‘hey, maybe we have three tiers or four tiers within an athletics department, and hey, we don't want to get rid of, and I'll just say men's volleyball for there, we don't want to eliminate those opportunities, but in the current landscape, we can't fund them at the same level that maybe we even fund our women's volleyball program.’” Gordon also commented on scale comparatives of where departments may be looking to save money: “Yeah, if you were to cut men's volleyball, you're saving less than a million dollars. And that would be at some of our higher funded institutions. Some of that is dependent…Stanford is going to be where you have more expensive scholarships and stuff. So some things are dependent, but yeah, you're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars versus millions and millions of dollars. And, I would say on the volleyball side of things, it's a two, three million overall budget for women's volleyball and right now, that is a sport that's showing revenue potential. And it's actually, there is one women's sports program in the country that actually operates in a positive, and that's Nebraska volleyball. There's no women's basketball that operates positive. There's no soccer or softball even within that. It's not, it's a small, I won't say drop in the bucket, but it's not a big piece of the pie.” Lots more. (link)

The Big Ten tackles the oft-asked query of “why is the Big Ten still called the Big Ten” since the league has expanded over time to actually include 18 schools. The short answer: “the name isn’t a headcount. Keeping it maintains tradition, and it’s smart business.” That’s not to say the Big Ten hasn’t thought about changing it before. Back in 1993, when Penn State joined as the 11th school, newly-appointed Commissioner Jim Delany considered making a change, but there was loud and immediate backlash to the idea. As to why the name has continued on over the years despite even more additions, the Big Ten highlights factors that include the importance of maintaining consistency during conference realignment, the standard the Big Ten name has secured throughout the sports industry, what the conference name means traditionally to its fans as well as the perceived lack of importance in across-the-board numerical accuracy when not every league sport has 18 participating programs. With the Women’s final later this morning, Sportico’s Brendan Coffey digs into revenue generation numbers surrounding Wimbledon, highlighting that the tennis event will likely generate more than a half a billion dollars over its fortnight run that ends Sunday. The 2024 tournament brought in £409M ($555M), up 7% from the previous year, while boasting 162% growth from a decade ago per reports from tournament and playing grounds operator The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club. The majority of the revenue comes from media contracts “which account for just under half of the total – mainly from ABC and ESPN parent Walt Disney Co. in the U.S. and the BBC in the U.K.” That broadcast revenue will likely help the event continue its exponential growth with UK rights up for bid after 2027 and the fact that the BBC noted there were 225M total hours of Wimbledon watched during the two-week 2024 event.
