Effective September 1, Jessup, Thomas More, USC Beaufort and Vanguard will become full DII members, with the division’s total membership growing to 293. Roosevelt, Sul Ross State, Jamestown, UC Merced and UT Dallas have all advanced to their final year of their provisional membership process. Middle Georgia State (NAIA) has been accepted into the process. The DII Membership Committee did recommend Menlo repeat its second year of the three-year provisional process in 2025-26. (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker releases a letter outlining the need for staff reductions and reassignments within the Association, as well as the consolidation of regulatory affairs and governance into a single operating unit as a result of the House settlement. Baker writes that with the transfer of enforcement and regulatory activity away from the NCAA to the College Sports Commission, the newly-combined “governance and policy” group will be guided temporarily by Senior VP of Governance Kevin Lennon in the role of Acting Senior VP of Regulatory Affairs while a search is conducted. Moving forward, “AMA and governance teams will reorganize under one leadership team and align by division. Enforcement and the Eligibility Center will continue to be separate teams but will now report to the senior vice president of governance and policy. Hearing operations will continue to report to legal affairs. Additionally, many communications, information technology and human resource functions that currently operate out of regulatory affairs and governance will move into the NCAA’s enterprise-wide, functional departments that handle these issues.” Baker goes on to note that a combination of not backfilling open positions, transferring functions and a voluntary separation program will result in 20-30 fewer full-time employees throughout regulatory affairs and that all other national department offices won’t be impacted. The SCORE Act has been introduced into the House of Representatives with nine sponsors, led by Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Janelle Bynum (D-OR) and Shomari Figures (D-AL). The SCORE Act could still face major revision via markups, and if passed through the House, would need bipartisan support to pass in the Senate. Among the many provisions that would impact the current NCAA revenue-sharing model, the bill would codify the House settlement and preempt state NIL laws. In addition, the bill would allow the establishment of a one-time transfer rule and eligibility standards. Other parameters would include requiring all schools to maintain 16 varsity sports teams, keeping schools from cutting scholarships for injury or performance and requiring schools to provide athletes with academic support and out-of-pocket healthcare within three years of leaving school only if any coach earns over $250K per year, adjusted for inflation. More from last month’s Championships Committee meeting, as the group “indicated support for staff exploring a paywall relationship rather than continue allocating dollars from the Division II budget, reasoning that the consistency of a managed platform outweighs the branding exposure that might be gained from the streaming content being available for free.” With the change to the championship access ratio, the Tennis Committee is considering a potential super regional model and reducing the number of teams at the finals site from 16 to eight, thus reducing the number of regional sites and increasing the number of teams at each regional. Another item up for discussion came from the DII membership survey - whether Basketball and Volleyball championships should change and potentially expand to a three-week format. Full report. (link)

Barton AD Ken Tyler pens an op-ed for The Wilson Times about the Bulldogs’ position in athletics amidst all of the change, especially at the DI level, writing in part: “At Barton College, we approach athletics from a transformational standpoint, not a transactional one. You’ll see them not only on the field or court, but also serving as orientation leaders, resident assistants and research associates. Athletics supports the mission and business model of the college, providing a positive and nurturing student-athlete experience, and competing to win in the classroom, in competition and in the Wilson community. You can root for the Heels, Devils, Pack, or Pirates, but we are Wilson’s hometown college team, and we have no doubt you’ll root for the Bulldogs. We have great coaches and staff, beautiful facilities, and talented student-athletes who compete at a high level. You know what we are? We’re what college athletics used to be, and what it was meant to be. We may have some navigate the transfer portal and a few Bulldogs dipping their toes into the NIL waters, but most of our student-athletes, including football and basketball players, are here to get a first-class education and to learn and grow as people. Our games are affordable and many are free, and you can bring your kids onto the field or court after the game for a photo, no problem. […] But mostly, I’m proud to be part of the team, Wilson’s hometown team, at Barton College, where we still do it the right way.”

East Central has received “transformational gifts” towards the $2.3M fundraising goal for its Football locker room renovation project. The upgrades include 140 lockers with LED screens, a new athletic training room, hot and cold recovery tubs, team areas and more. HC John Litrenta: “This is monumental for our program and university. A lot of credit goes to our administration who believes in our vision and direction. This will give us a great facility to call home for our current and future players that will set us apart. The GLVC will add Women’s Wrestling as its 27th sponsored sport this academic year with members McKendree, Quincy, Upper Iowa and William Jewell alongside associate members Davenport, Grand Valley State and Northern Michigan. (link)
