The Sun Belt has officially invited Louisiana Tech to join the league, per ESPN's Pete Thamel, who notes: "Louisiana Tech's entry date into the conference isn't certain, with the earliest the school could join the league being 2026. The entry date is expected to be figured out over the next few weeks as Louisiana Tech works out its departure from Conference USA, which is expected to cost at least $5 million." (link)

Of note, it’s a five-year deal at $1.5M comp annually with the ability for Smith to earn a bonus of $1.2M if revenue for the Terps is $50M more in 2029-30 than it was in 2024-25 (not including a full-share of Big Ten payouts or increased CFP monies from the league). SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey kicked off this year’s football media soiree in Atlanta & touched upon a number of key issues impacting the industry. Most notably: “As it related to the (House) settlement, I thought it appropriate to use a bit of a metaphor for running a marathon. I have run and finished 41 marathons in my lifetime. It's been a while, but I do remember the importance of getting it off to the right kind of start. That doesn't mean you feel great in the first two miles, nor does it mean, transitioning that metaphor, that everything works perfectly in the first two weeks of settlement implementation. There's been plenty of naysayers in the last 14 days, but the settlement went into effect July 1st, and we're here July 14th while working through historic and transformational change. We're in the middle of change, and in the middle of anything significant, it will get messy. That doesn't mean you leave. In a marathon it doesn't mean you step off the course because myself, as poorly as I may have felt sometimes after two or three miles, recall that those moments might actually produce the best efforts. The burden of making a new system work is certainly on commissioners and conference offices, but the responsibility is shared with our campuses and our campus leaders, and that's recognized in this league. We still have to work through the implementation, but the burden is shared by presidents and chancellors, athletics directors and coaches. It's also shared by those around our programs. [...] Last week we saw the bipartisan introduction of the SCORE Act in the House of Representatives. That's an important moment. I think what's happening in college athletics is a nonpartisan issue, but using the typical nomenclature, to have members of both of our major political parties willing to step out and introduce the SCORE Act is a positive step. [...] …in general we are supportive of expanding both the men's and the women's basketball tournaments. Nothing in college basketball is static. Tournament expansion is certainly worth exploring. As last season showed, the Southeastern Conference is going to be fine whether the bracket expands or not. [...] We from the College Sports Commission think we're operating sufficient with the settlement terms. We'll have the right kind of communication with the authors of the letter and communicate and educate on why we think we have the right perspective to begin with. [...] I had a conversation with some of our membership about outside financing ideas as late as last week. We have been probably 2 1/2, 3 years into visits with banks, with private equity, with venture capital. I mean, you could go down the range. Private capital, that's another phrase that's been used. That's not been the right direction for us. We've not seen the concept that works. That doesn't mean we won't consider opportunities. If there are opportunities for mutual benefit, those would pique our interest. But the notion of just jumping to something because there's a pot of money there seems an uninformed direction, and simply taking propositions where there's not the kind of clarity around what if you don't meet your high end predictions, what's left then? I think those are things that continue to weigh heavily on our mind.” Lots more. (link)

The Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman notes that eventual NCAA Men’s Tournament expansion could hinge on one single facet – booze. With the NCAA needing to secure more funding surrounding any potential expansion, the event’s current TV contract with CBS and Turner locked in through 2032 and broadcast partners not required to pay for additional expansion teams, a person familiar with the situation says, ”the NCAA needs to wring significant amounts of money from selling official NCAA sponsorships in categories it has previously shunned: beer, wine and hard alcohol.” That comes with a twist, however, as the NCAA can’t sell those sponsorships, but would need to persuade tournament broadcasters to do so before upping their annual payment to the NCAA. Per Bachman, “the NCAA handed control of its sponsorship program to CBS and Turner. The unusual move means that if a bank or insurance company wants to become an official NCAA sponsor of any championship the NCAA operates, it doesn’t pay the NCAA. It pays the broadcasters of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Those rightsholders, CBS and Turner, keep that sponsorship revenue, which they use to offset their roughly $1 billion annual payment to the NCAA for the men’s basketball tournament.” Overall, NCAA sponsorships have become very lucrative, making up close to half of tournament revenue. That means if broadcasters merely broke even on their NCAA deal, sponsorship sales would net them close to $500M. More from Bachman. (link)

The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman cites sources in reporting “that NCAA tourney expansion isn't a done deal yet. The committee is still making sure that this is the right decision, and they don't want to rush into anything without making sure they [don’t] screw it up. All three options were still on the table coming out of the meeting this past week. Expand to 72, 76 or stay at 68." (link)

“Lawsuits are about to come,” a source tells On3’s Pete Nakos after the College Sports Commission and NIL Go issued firm guidance last Thursday on plans to handle booster-funded NIL deals, noting that they must meet a “valid business purpose.” In an immediate response to Thursday’s CSC issuance, House plaintiffs attorneys Jeffrey Kessler and Steve Berman responded to the NCAA in a two-page letter calling for the guidance to be retracted for “undermining the settlement terms,” while also threatening to bring the issue before appointed settlement magistrate Judge Nathanael Cousins. With the NIL clearinghouse facing lengthy delays, multiple NIL collectives are threatening to bring lawsuits against the CSC and NIL Go. One NIL collective operator opined: “It’s a total s–t show. I don’t know if they changed the latency — the first day it was open, we got two or three deals through. One of them was an $8,000 deal for a softball player. Since those first 48 hours, I don’t think anything we’ve put in has come out the other side. They’re going to get sued. I’ve got three different attorneys wanting to represent us. You can’t ban a classification of business. And you certainly can’t offer an alternative and not have it function. There is a very clear antitrust claim for what they did last Thursday.” With head coaches now asking questions about the delays, Nakos cites sources speculating that “some schools will start paying players under the table – a fear many have openly discussed in recent months as the House settlement was finalized.” Another NIL collective leader commented: “We were already talking to an attorney. And then Friday, Kessler and Berman came out and reprimanded the NCAA and CSC about the guidance. Who are [the NCAA and CSC] to determine what a valid business purpose is? If they really want this thing to work, they need to approve more than they deny. They need to give everybody some grace and not be iron-fisted. Not to say the quiet part out loud that we’re trying to kill collectives. They just provided the opening statement for the first lawsuit against them. That you’re going to treat people differently. Or people are going to start paying under the table, or kids aren’t going to submit deals.” (link)

LSU Football HC Brian Kelly also took to the podium on Monday at SEC Media Days touching on a number of topics including NIL & revenue sharing, the benefits of playing in-state schools, the CFP format & selection process, his working relationship with staff and what his expectations are for moving forward with collegiate governance. On what he hopes to see from collegiate governance: “Transparency and consistency. Those two words are probably the most important thing as we continue to move forward. Now, the other thing we would like is federal government involvement. … If we start with transparency and start with the clear communication necessary and consistency and approach … it's got to start with coaches. It's got to start with us. I mean, we have to be the stewards of this. There has to be a moral high ground. Ethics in this. … I was at a speaking engagement a few weeks back, and every question about the NIL was trying to find a way around it, trying to find a way to bring in revenue in some other way. Sooner or later we have to take the stand that transparency, consistency, ethics, and morality are at the core of this. If that's where we are we're going to be able to move to the next step and be able to continue to make progress.” More from Kelly. (link)

Outgoing Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione to News on 6’s Toby Rowland: “I've always known that for me to have any success as a leader, it was going to be fully understanding what it takes to put others in a position to be successful. And so I think one of my gifts is knowing what that is and working with, whether it's coaches or staff or most notably having the best interest of the athletes in every decision that is made. Everyone, I mean, without exception, and be able to connect with them to know what they need, what helps them, what they're seeking, how they want to grow, showing them how we've got the resources, being there, having them come by an office, sitting in a chair on a couch, talking about their life, asking for advice, having that connection. So I think at the end of the day, the process is sort of the glue, but the strength of the relationships is what drives the process itself.” On the skill set needed in Norman amid all the industry change: “Still need to be a visionary. You still have a strong set of core values, but your tactical approach needs to be different than where we have been. It doesn't mean everything is thrown out. It's not a ‘throw the baby out with the bath water’, but you have a whole new set of circumstances that have to be understood and accommodated and you have to do it in an environment that is still not yet fully defined and or structured. My background is rev gen. I can just tell you the last several years I spent a lot of time just raising money, generating revenue, trying to make sure that these separate parties who ran NIL tried to have the resources they needed. And that was a bit frustrating because of the rules. We weren't really able to control it, like we had to rely on other people and everybody did the best they could do under the circumstances. But now we have that control, to an extent anyway, and we are operating in a capped environment. And when you get into a capped environment, it sounds great until people realize that after the distribution, there's still the human nature element. I can remember back to conversations even 20 or 30 years ago about whatever the subject might be, ‘I need more scholarships, I need more money for assistance, I need more facility help. I need more and more and more.’ And it's not just the slogan of the SEC, it just means more the programs need more and at the moment we're churning through more of the resources than the system itself can generate. And so there's a natural tug or push and pull, whatever you want to call it, where this has to be managed. So the next leader has to have a really good sense, a skillset and strength to manage that, but also realize that there's nothing wrong with saying I need to get even smarter. People around me always believe that the best leaders realize the people they put around them with the specific skill sets that can complement the ones they have are the ones that will succeed and in a period of disruption, kind of think of it as like this tidal wave that has been hitting college athletics. If one stands on the beach and just waits for the tidal wave to crash, they're going to be washed away. Your only chance to survive it is to dive into it and make sure you're doing everything you can to get on the other side.” Lots more. (link)

St. Bonaventure Men’s Basketball GM Adrian Wojnarowski & The Athlete Group’s Jake Rosenberg sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Jason Belzer to discuss modern roster construction & management in the NIL & revenue sharing era. Wojnarowski: “Our head coach has final say on who we bring in, but I have to figure out if we can afford it. And if that one move breaks our roster elsewhere, we talk about that too. It’s payroll. It’s long-term planning. It’s modeling for Year 2 impact before we sign a Year 1 deal. [...] If I’m going to ask five people to come together to help us land a player, they need to know we’re protecting that investment. Otherwise, why would they give again?” Rosenberg: “I’ve walked into programs where multimillion-dollar roster decisions are made with little to no process. It’s not that people aren’t smart, it’s that they’re working in an environment that hasn’t caught up to the stakes. [...] It’s like I’ve time-traveled from the NFL into the past. And now I’m trying to help programs avoid mistakes we already made.” Lots more in the full conversation. (link)

Texas Tech Football HC Joey McGuire is not sure all of his student-athletes would want multi-year deals, instead wishing to keep their options open. McGuire from Big 12 football media days: “There's some guys that are like, 'OK, we're not going to. We're going to play under the contract we're under, and if we have a great year, you're either going to pay us a lot more or we're going to go to the portal.' I think that's good, I guess, from the standpoint of, at least they're honest, too. If they are playing for a contract, then I expect to get their best.” McGuire will push for the multi-year deals with his two-deep players in particular. (link)

“Safe. Easy. Uninspiring.” That is how the Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen describes a potential move by the Sun Belt to add Louisiana Tech. Mettlen continues: “No, tabbing Louisiana Tech, currently in Conference USA as the choice to replace Pac-12 bound Texas State isn’t terrible. But it’s not great either. It’s meh. If you’re going to move quickly to get back to 14, the Bulldogs make about as much sense as anybody. Oddly though, the most aggressive move the Sun Belt could have made was no move at all. The Sun Belt could have held tight at 13 teams, signaling to the rest of the FBS the conference was open for business when the next big wave of realignment hits. That will be 2030 at the latest. … Leaving room to add at least one team, possibly three, when the big shakeup occurs could have been a bold move. This doesn’t mean there won’t be further expansion of the Sun Belt between now and 2031, but it limits the flexibility to maneuver a bit.” More of Mettlen’s two cents. (link)

CBS senior writer Matt Norlander via X: “Heading home after four days on the recruiting trail. Was surprised to learn plenty of coaches are content to stay at 68. Some like 72; most I spoke to think 76 is overkill. Overriding sentiment from most of the ~15 I spoke with was: ‘I don't really think we need to change it.’ Coaches in this group include (Alabama's) Nate Oats, (Duke’s) Jon Scheyer, (Michigan State’s) Tom Izzo, (Virginia Tech’s) Mike Young, (UConn’s) Dan Hurley, (Houston’s) Kelvin Sampson, (Wake Forest’s) Steve Forbes, (Nebraska’s) Fred Hoiberg, (West Virginia’s) Ross Hodge + more. Even guys like (Texas’) Sean Miller and (Michigan’s) Dusty May, who are welcoming to adding more teams, said, ‘If they keep it at 68, that's fine too.’” (link)

North Dakota Football HC Eric Schmidt visits with the FCS Football Talk podcast to provide his perspective on a number of key items. On the role of collectives & revenue sharing at the FCS level & their impact on recruiting: “I think a lot of people are still trying to get educated and learn like, ‘Hey, what does that mean to opt in? What does that mean if you have a collective and can your collective continue on if you do opt in and those types of things.’ So, I think you're just doing everything you can to educate recruits, to educate prospects as far as, ‘Hey, this is what we have at UND and go compare it to the other places that you might be interested in.’ And ultimately we want to be able to really build a relationship with a kid and then be able to, as we talk to them, not only just talk to 'em, but show them too as well through an offer sheet like, ‘Hey, you're a priority here. We're going to help you be able to navigate the college landscape and not just talk about it, be able to show you as well and back that up with an offer sheet.’ I think at the end of the day, that's still what it's about. You know what I mean is showing those guys one, hey, what the program is about, how it's going to help you, how it's going to benefit you not only during your time here on campus but your life after football too as well. And then being able to be competitive in the college landscape. Hey, being able to show that you have all those different things, whether that's a collective or Alston dollars or you're opting in internal NIL, all those things. If you can have different helpers and supporters in your program and show that you have the machinery in place in order to be as competitive as you can be, I think that ultimately probably maybe weighs the most on somebody when they're like, all right, from the moment I stepped on campus to the moment I left, hey, these guys were dialed in. They talked about a collective. I met with somebody from the collective or they talked about internal NIL. I met with somebody there. They talked about nutrition, I met with somebody there. It's just to be able to have all those different things that I think are important for a young man's development, they've got to see that you have those when they come on campus.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit pens on the history between Acrobatics & Tumbling and Stunt, which have now both been recommended by the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics to get full championship status, which would take effect across all three divisions by Spring 2027. Libit sums up the rivalry: “For much of their history, acrobatics & tumbling—a gymnastics-inspired outgrowth of early competitive cheer—and stunt—Varsity Brands’ effort to retool its all-star cheer model into an NCAA-friendly format—saw each other as direct competitors in a heads-up, zero-sum race for college admission.” National Collegiate Acrobatics & Rumbling Association Executive Dir. Janell Cook observes: “The sentiment we received so often from administrators and experienced people within college athletics is that only one will make it.” Lots More. (link)

Extra Points reports there may be more interest in the creation of a new college basketball video game outside the walls of EA Sports. Most notably, 2K Sports also responded to CLC’s RFP back in November of last year. Here are a couple of key details on how 2K would approach a renewed college hoops game: “2K’s proposal was for a ‘non-exclusive model for a limited number of DI basketball teams that would be a 5v5 tournament gameplay format integrated into its NBA 2K game.’ 2K promised to assess the viability of a standalone game as early as 2030, assuming the initial release met certain milestones. It also proposed a limited number of teams: 16 total from the men’s and women’s game in Year 1, 32 in Year 2 and 68 in Year 3.” However, in a memo circulated earlier this month, CLC has recommended moving forward with EA’s version due to its revenue, reach & NIL opportunities. No word yet on if 2K may still move forward with its strategy. (link)
