#8: Lackawanna AD Erik Larson sits down with Midwest Sports Net’s Joey McWilliams about the Falcons’ jump from NJCAA to DII. Larson notes two unique aspects of the transition: all student-athletes have to be four-year degree-seeking students, so all current and future student-athletes will transition to four-year degree programs, and before applying, LC has to be competing against other four-year members. The Falcons will finish out their time in the NJCAA in 2025-26 before competing against four-year schools in 2026-27. On the impact on the institution as a whole: “This almost gives us the full transition effect to go from a two-year to a four-year institution. Now, that being said, we are still an innovative college and are still going to be offering those two-year degrees for those students for whom those programs still have value, but from an athletic standpoint, yes, we're going to continue to add bachelor's degrees. We're going to have the opportunity here very soon to add master's programming and so, with the transition in athletics, it just continues to grow what the college is able to do.” (link)

#7: UT Tyler promotes Asst. AD/Softball HC Mike Reed to Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations/Softball HC, Asst. AD for Compliance James Bonnette to Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance and Academic Support and Asst. Director of Facilities and Operations Jackie Martin to Assoc. AD for Operations/SWA. (link)

#6: Former Emporia State Women’s Soccer HC Bryan Sailer’s lawsuit against ESU and former AD David Spafford has been partially dismissed, with all claims against Spafford having been dismissed. Sailer’s Title IX complaint about the university ignoring the program remains a part of the filing, as Judge John Lungstrum partially dismissed a separate Title IX complaint and his First Amendment complaint. #5: The Championships Committee is recommending 2026 NCAA Convention legislation to implement the NCAA Power Index (NPI) as the sole selection criteria for team sports, starting in 2026-27, after considering making this recommendation via noncontroversial legislation. If approved, there would be a “check-in” after the first year in practice to ensure dials are set appropriately, with the dials to be set on a three-year cycle. Other notable considerations from the committee include the elimination of a .500 record or higher for postseason selection, the requirement of nonconference in-region competition and the elimination of RACs upon the adoption of this legislation. Other legislative recommendations from the committee include the addition of a DII Women’s Bowling Championship, the establishment of a new playing rules structure through a joint DII and DIII Playing Rules Oversight Panel under the final oversight of the respective Management Councils, the separation of the NCAA National Collegiate Fencing Championships into Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships, and a change to the Football championship date formula to allow for the teams playing in the national title game to participate in athletic activities during the winter break. The latter change would come in the 2027 season, with the championship game to move to the first week of January and an additional week to be added to the end of the regular season. To those who say this conflicts with the Life in the Balance philosophy, the committee believes it supports balance by allowing those members who do not want to play Week 0, 12 weeks to play 11 games. The committee is also recommending the implementation of a high-cost city per diem of $205 starting in September and the discontinuation of DII championship festivals after the 2026 fall sports festival, which is currently allocated $700K for three years and $200K for the fourth. (link); For those unfamiliar with how NPI works, D3 Datacast took 97 minutes to dissect the entire formula ahead of its implementation in DIII last year. Super insightful for those who want to know more or are math and statistics aficionados. (link)

#4: Former Wayne State (MI) Women’s Tennis HC Sheila Snyder is suing the university, President Kimberly Andrews Espy and AD Erica Wallace for gender discrimination. Snyder claims she was forced to retire after an investigation into an incident in which she “flipped a cell phone across a table to get the attention of one of her players while ‘possibly using profanity,’” which violated workplace violence policies, and that a Football coach was not forced to resign after a similar incident in 2023. #3: NCAA EVP of Regulatory Affairs Stan Wilcox will retire on August 1 after nearly seven years with the national office. President Charlie Baker: “Stan told me shortly after I arrived at the NCAA that he would be retiring at the end of 2023. Toward the end of the year, he and I agreed that there was much to do, and it would be great if he could stay with us for a bit longer, which I really appreciated. As a result, he will be wrapping up a 40-year career as a student-athlete who played in a March Madness Final Four; an administrator and manager who served at the school, conference and NCAA level; and one of only three Black athletic directors to win an FBS national football championship. (Go Seminoles!) His relationships throughout the college and professional ranks and his ability to see issues from a variety of points of view have made him an invaluable leader and teacher during his time with the NCAA. I especially appreciated his insights and advice during this past year, which has involved more change in Division I college sports than any other in recent memory.” (link)

#2: King selects Montreat (NAIA) VP of Athletics and Enrollment Management Jose Larios as its new VP of Athletics, starting August 1. President Andy Tooley: “Jose's significant experience as a coach, mentor, and effective administrator in multiple areas of higher education made him stand out in a pool of strong candidates. I found Jose's holistic approach to student-athlete success, philosophy of leadership, track record of developing winning programs, and enthusiasm for fostering community partnerships inspiring.” (link)

#1: PacWest Commissioner Jessica Harbison Weaver will step down next week after two years leading the league. Harbison Weaver: “When I was hired as commissioner I had several large-scale goals I wanted to achieve—I could have never imagined blowing them out of the water in just two years. Together the conference put on the first Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships; we put the conference all on the same digital network to drive revenue to our institutions; increased championship revenue to offset rising costs for the conference office; got a volleyball championship approved; right-sized our championships; launched a championship-specific merchandise portfolio; got a new strategic plan approved; and enhanced the student-athlete experience in ways too numerous to count. I’m a builder at heart, but I’m looking forward to enjoying some time off before moving on to my next opportunity to help another organization dream big. I wish the PacWest the best of luck moving forward.” (link)
