CollegeAD reports five AD candidates were on Marshall’s campus this week for a round of interviews. Of the five, four are sitting ADs & the fifth is a “Power Four executive.” No word on an announcement timeline. (link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker responds to a question about his potential candidacy for the AD opening at Oklahoma: “Here’s what I would say to that - there’s no truth to the speculation or rumors at this point. That’s just people drawing lines, and I think this is the fourth or fifth time since I’ve been here that people had me out the door, and not one time have I taken an interview or even had a conversation with anybody about another job. We love living here, it’s a great place to live. I love the outdoors. The summers here are incredible. And more importantly, I have a wife and two daughters, and they’re perfectly happy here. You never say never because you don’t know what the future holds. Trust me, I’m aware of what the average athletic director tenure is; it’s about six years. Sometimes you’re like a preacher, and the congregation is ready to hear the message from somebody else. But yeah, there’s no truth to any of that speculation.” (link)

Learfield President & CEO Cole Gahagan caught up with Joe Pompliano on the Yahoo Finance Sports Report to discuss the evolution of the company & its positioning in the changing landscape of college athletics. Gahagan: “Look in all industries, but especially sports and entertainment as it relates to fans, I think people talk a whole lot about data, but they don't talk enough about two very important things. What is the source of that data and what are you doing with it, and then how are you monetizing it? Those are two very important factors that I don't think businesses talk enough about, particularly in the B2B space. [...] What about the things that we haven't tapped into yet? And again, remember naming rights, court rights, field rights, those types of things, we're still at our infancy and really monetizing them at scale. But I think beyond that, to your point, we're going to see more multi-purpose facilities around stadiums and arenas. We're going to see, I think, developments not dissimilar from The Battery in Atlanta because we've seen what kind of revenue growth and profitability growth that has helped the Braves achieve. So I think we're going to see more multi-use and multi-purpose development, not dissimilar from what is being built in Knoxville right now around college campuses. And again, you're going to see as a result of that, more initiatives, more assets, and more opportunities to significantly increase revenue on campuses.” Lots more. (link)

Every student-athlete at Iowa State will be getting “something” in the rev share split, with Cyclones AD Jamie Pollard explaining: “We are talking about a small percentage — about 1% of the $20M, about $300,000 — and all our athletes will participate in some form. The majority of our athletes will get $1,000, $500 per semester for giving up those [NIL] rights to us. … We felt that was really important for the culture of our department that all our athletes were involved in some form or fashion, including walk-ons.” Pollard’s take on NIL Go: “The verdict will be out on how well this puts up the bumpers around what was going on, because the last two years were pretty much Wild West. What everyone has to understand: This was just dealing with NIL. This wasn't designed to correct the transfer portal. The transfer portal issue is a complete separate legal issue that most likely would have to be dealt with through a congressional act of a very limited antitrust.” A bit more from Pollard’s sit down with KCCI Sports Director Scott Reister. Temple has laid off 50 employees university-wide as part of an overall budget crunch. The layoffs are part of 190 positions that were eliminated with the rest coming through attrition, retirements and elimination of vacant spots. In athletics, "multiple high-level administrators” were impacted, including Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Scott Walcoff who announced his departure on social media. (link)

Minnesota is adding a $100 per semester fee for students that will support the growing revenue needs of athletics. Per the Minneapolis Star-Tribune’s Erin Adler: “(Gophers AD Mark) Coyle said the athletics department has five major ways to generate revenue: Contracts for distributing games on TV, ticket sales, fundraising, sponsorships and another category that includes licensing, concessions and renting out facilities.” (link)

Louisville will introduce a new $200 per-semester student athletic fee and ticket model this fall. The fee allows students access to home football and men’s basketball games, with a lottery system if demand outpaces supply of tickets to those events. Students will also get tickets to women’s basketball, volleyball and baseball games. The Cards will also offer a Ville'ns+ membership, which would guarantee seats to all men's basketball and football home games. That's an additional $75 and is capped at 500 students. UofL officials say “the new fee aligns with the ACC average of $204 per semester.” (link)

As previously reported, Clemson will add 150 new scholarships and $6M in expenses, which IPTAY will fund. As such, the organization is raising its annual giving levels with the top tier, called ‘Riggs,’ going from $25K to $27,500 and the bottom tier, called ‘Paw,’ going from $60 to $75. In FY25, IPTAY reported $88.02M in cash donations/pledges, from 22,249 total donors. The Tigers welcomed 1,085,353 in home attendance with a record 804,701 tickets sold. All of this and more were part of Tigers’ AD Graham Neff and IPTAY CEO Davis Babb’s report to the Board of Trustees this past week. (link)

Thanks to the contributions of nearly 2,000 donors, Chattanooga raised $10.709M, the largest amount in program history, with a 20% jump in the annual fund to $1.251M. As such, Assoc. More from Illinois State AD Jeri Beggs who says NIL funding is needed to prevent poaching in sports like football, men’s & women’s basketball and volleyball. Beggs: “We know to compete in our ticketed sports, we're going to have to invest more in those sports. NIL is changing what that looks like. If we want to compete in the Missouri Valley and get back to the NCAA Tournament, we have to have a certain amount of money available to get those players. If not they will leave us. The transfer portal and immediate eligibility make it easy to do.” According to The Pantagraph’s Randy Reinhardt, Beggs also didn’t rule out potentially cutting sports down the road, remarking that “what we're seeing across the country is they are definitely eliminating the Olympic sports (track and field, gymnastics, tennis, swimming and diving). Those are getting cut across the country or you're not funding them at the same level you used to because you can't afford to do it. We have 19 sports at Illinois State. We only have to have 14. No decisions have been made yet, but we are considering everything.” Despite all the challenges that lay ahead, Beggs still sought out the permanent job after serving in the interim role. “I wanted to help Illinois State get through this transition period. I think within a couple years we'll all get used to this. We will adapt to all those things. But in the interim this is going to be a rough time for ISU athletics. Nobody loves change. There will be some winners and others who don't have as good of a situation as they had in the past." More from Reinhardt. (link)

Le Moyne has notified the NCAA of its intent to accelerate its transition to full DI membership. In accelerating its reclassification schedule, the Dolphins would gain full access to DI membership benefits and its 21 teams would be fully eligible for NCAA Championships starting in 2026-27 after completing its upcoming third year of the reclassification process. This comes after the DI Council adopted a proposal at January’s NCAA Convention revising the reclassifying process from four to three years for DII institutions, assuming schools “meet academic requirements, including being above the 10th percentile of DI members in the academic progress rate, graduation success rate, or the difference between the federal graduation rates for student-athletes and for the general student body.” Reclassifying schools “also must meet new financial aid requirements, such as a scholarship offering that exceeds the 10th percentile of active DI members, participate in an academic review, satisfy all DI core guarantees and attestation requirements and complete an NCAA self-study program.” (link)

Front Office Sports' Ryan Glasspiegel has the lowdown on the future of a docuseries featuring North Carolina Football and HC Bill Belichick with multiple sources saying it’s headed to Disney’s Hulu. Producer EverWonder Studio and representatives for both Disney and UNC reportedly declined comment on the matter, while Glasspiegel reports that the two sides are finalizing a deal with early-stage show production already underway. The docuseries was originally slated to appear on HBO as part of Hard Knocks: Offseason, but a deal fell through at the last minute “reportedly, in part, due to creative differences involving Belichick’s girlfriend Jordon Hudson.” Glasspiegel writes that a name for the doc has yet to be determined but that a firm controlled by Hudson “registered trademarks for phrases including ‘Chapel Bill (Bill’s Version),’ ‘Do Your Job: (Bill’s Version),’ and ‘No Days Off (Bill’s Version).’” (link)

Utah State appoints former Penn State AD and current Huron Senior Advisor Sandy Barbour as Interim AD, starting July 21. Interim President Alan Smith: “Barbour, and the team at Huron, bring extensive experience and expertise in championship-level Division I athletics, including NIL, operations, finance, recruiting, facilities management and marketing. They will provide a valuable national perspective on the evolving college athletics landscape and our transition into the Pac-12, while also bringing stability to our athletics leadership team.” (link)

Illinois State AD Jeri Beggs is confident that the House settlement won’t deal a debilitating blow to the Redbirds, per The Pantagraph’s Randy Reinhardt. Beggs: "Basically, if you want to be a Division I school, you have to pony up. You have to be a part of it. It is hard on us. Half a million dollars (per year) is a lot to our budget. We're going to be relying on some creativity, some efficiencies and also asking our fans and donors to try to help us out. … It's difficult for me because we didn't earn any of the money the lawsuit was based on and our student-athletes aren't going to get any of it, yet we're losing half a million dollars for 10 years." Beggs also notes that the department wouldn’t have been protected from taking a financial hit regardless of its settlement decision. “We were going to lose the half million dollars of funding from the NCAA regardless of whether we opted in or not. There was no agreeing to it. This is NCAA funding. We're not writing a check to them. They are just not sending us the full amount we used to get.” As a result, Beggs and the ISU department are searching for ways to save money within a $20-30M annual budget, with Reinhardt citing as a recent example of the mid-major’s cost-cutting efforts that Women’s Tennis HC Maja Kovacek also took on Men’s Tennis HC duties. Beggs: “We're going to have to pinch all the pennies in order to come up with a half million a year. Plus the university is belt tightening right now and we're participating in that. We lost some budget from a university standpoint as well." More. (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini has the latest on the continuing realignment showdown between the Mountain West and Pac-12. After announcing on Tuesday that mediation had failed to result in a resolution of the dispute surrounding $150M in poaching and exit fees owed to the Mountain West, which the Pac-12 and departing MWC sued over, San Jose State AD Jeff Konya summed up the mood around the league for 2025-26, remarking that “it’s almost like an arranged marriage for the next year.” Per Vannini, neither side in the matter would speak much regarding ongoing litigation, while the overall sense was that the sides didn’t get close to a number. Konya is quick to give credit to Commissioner Gloria Nevarez for helping keep the league intact through a Grant of Rights, however, remarking that “the whole thing pivoted on the schools coming together to sign that document. Without that, it would’ve been a lot more dubious. But then we pivoted to ‘26. Credit the presidents, CEOs, athletic directors and Gloria for that plan.” Another individual from a departing school added “Gloria’s a pitbull, and I respect that.” Departing schools remain frustrated for a number of reasons including the $18M they each owe in exit fees as well as the reported withholding of $1.3M in student-athlete assistance money from the NCAA that’s used to fund life skills and mental health initiatives. Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy: “That part is disappointing for us because that’s not money that’s tied to the conferences. It’s a pass-through from the NCAA. Very unexpected. You go through this process not knowing how things are going to turn out, but you don’t think going into these processes that the conference will make decisions that will impact mental health.” (link)

According to Sportico’s Lev Akabas, nine Division II/III schools that participate as part of Division I in one or two sports chose to opt into sharing revenue with student-athletes. Here’s the list: Minnesota State (Men’s & Women’s Ice Hockey), Minnesota Duluth (Men’s & Women’s Ice Hockey), St. Cloud State (Men’s & Women’s Ice Hockey), Lake Superior State (Men’s Ice Hockey), Michigan Tech (Men’s Ice Hockey), Dallas Baptist (Baseball) and Augusta (men’s & Women’s Golf), as well as DIII programs Colorado College (Men’s Ice Hockey and Women’s Soccer) and Johns Hopkins (Men’s & Women’s Fencing, Men’s & Women’s Lacrosse). College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon breaks down WHL Commissioner Dan Near’s visit with Guy Flaming on The Pipeline Show to discuss the expanding trend of high-profile hockey players departing the WHL for the NCAA and whether he expects that to continue, especially with first-round picks. Near: “I think it would be premature to make any assertions about what anyone else will do. … We have a bunch of players who have decided to play NCAA this year, and they don’t know what it’s going to be like. And we don’t know. It might enhance their development, it might not be for them, or it might just be a choice. It won’t be the first time that the top pick in the NHL Draft chose the college path; it’s just the first time that they started in our league and moved on to college. What I really think our perspective is, is that we’re a development league for pro hockey. We think that the majority of players coming through our league, once this balances out, will say that this whole thing is structured to get them to the pro level. If they need more time when they’re done in the WHL, they have the NCAA and USport as an option. But this idea that there will be this mass exodus, I’m just not prepared to concede on that. The 68-game schedule, the grind, the seven-game playoff series. The things that we do that prepare you for the NHL and the AHL. I use the analogy, I know people who have flown coach their whole life, and they have the opportunity to get upgraded and they sat in business class. Do you know how hard it is to go back to coach once you sat in business class? The AHL versus the NCAA environment, I’m not sure that playing a Friday-Saturday schedule, and then pumping iron and drinking smoothies all week is necessarily the best segway into what the AHL grind is like. We really believe that what we do prepares players for the next step in their journey. That doesn’t mean every player. Every player has their own nuances. But we aren’t sitting here saying we need to drastically change our operating model because a few players have decided to experiment the other path. Let’s see where this all goes.” (link)

It’s SBJ’s Jason Wilson with the scoop, reporting that 2K Sports apparently now has plans to create a standalone college basketball game for the first time since College Hoops 2K8 back in Nov. 2007. With competitor EA Sports having already announced a projected return to the basketball market in 2028, it was thought that 2K Sports had plans to respond through a piece of downloadable content or an expansion of its NBA 2K Series featuring a limited number of D1 teams. Wilson notes that 2K Sports declined any comment on the matter. (link)

A U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio judge has dismissed the NIL lawsuit filed last October by former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor against OSU, the NCAA and the Big Ten, writes On3’s Pete Nakos. In Friday’s ruling, Judge Sarah D. Morrison opined that “Ohio State must be dismissed for sovereign immunity, and Pryor’s claims against the defendants are untimely given the four-year statute of limitations for antitrust claims.” In his original filing, Pryor argued that he “would have been one of the highest paid collegiate athletes in the country” if NIL had been legal during his playing career.
