The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna asks Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti whether it would be the worst thing to move forward with the 12-team College Football Playoff model to establish consistency with fans, and Petitti responds: “We’ve done something to improve the format by going to straight seeding. I really believe that's a positive change. I think there's already a pretty significant tweak to what we did last year, so we're obviously very supportive of that. When you change things, you have to give the fans time to react and engage. But the size of the audiences we're talking with college football, people find these big games. They'll follow it, they know when these matchups are taking place. So I think we've got a pretty good head start with that. Like, I don't know if there's a magic number to how long you have to do something before you can change it.” Petitti also comments on last year’s CFP title game between Ohio State and Notre Dame being the second least-watched matchup in the CFP era: “I mean, that night, in particular, if I remember, right, it was inauguration night, right? So you had a lot of high cable news viewership that night. There's always a competitive reason. So look, we'll see. But I think fans follow through a lot of meaningful games, so we'll see where it goes from there. But look, I think format’s important and really critical for access and there's just scheduling. Are there things that we can do to how we schedule these games that can improve? I think that's an obligation also: What's the best way to schedule these games? That's a whole separate piece of this.” Moving forward, Petitti says the Big Ten will continue “listening to other ideas when they're presented, and we also still have strong opinions about some of the things that we believe are right, just because we still have some more work to do, and we're willing to do it. … I think we've shown to be a fast responder when people give us ideas. We'll do the work right away, and we'll try to respond quickly to either move the process forward or not. … This is a really important decision to make, the way we structure the Playoff going forward, and I don't think there are any shortcuts.” (link)

American Conference Commissioner Tim Pernetti, speaking at the conference’s football media days in Charlotte, addressed the growing presence of politics in college athletics: “The House settlement is historic. It marks a new era in college athletics. It’s not perfect. It’s not flawless. It’s a step toward modernization, which this industry desperately needs … It’s also important that we wrap our arms around, and it’s not easy to do, everything that’s happening in Washington, D.C. right now. Federal engagement in college athletics is intensifying. Why? Because it’s important and people care about it. President Trump issued an executive order, saving college sports. Federal guidelines for name, image and likeness, for protection of non-revenue sports. Meanwhile, Congress is introducing and advancing two contrasting bills. The SCORE Act, which has been cleared by committee and is headed to the House. And the Athlete-Centric College Athlete Economic Freedom Act. These actions underscore the growing pressure to establish a uniform national standard for compensating and protecting student-athletes. Like the NCAA, we look forward to working with student-athletes, lawmakers and leadership to get on a path that enhances, not erodes, what makes college sports so special.” (link)

Facing a $147M budget deficit over the next six years, Iowa State is making significant concessions, including indefinitely postponing a $20M wrestling facility and a $25M renovation of Hilton Coliseum, The Gazette’s Vanessa Miller reported. “In the past two years, there have been several transformational changes in college athletics that will result in $30M in recurring annual financial repercussions to the athletics department beginning this year,” ISU wrote in the 2026 budget report submitted to the Board of Regents and made public this week. Other financial decisions include no longer absorbing the cost of sales tax on tickets (about $1.5M annually), raising the required annual donation levels for the Cyclone Club by 20% (generating $3M a year) and mandating all sports identify savings to help the budget crisis. The Citadel is opting out of the House settlement, and Bulldogs AD Art Chase explains that “we will continue to monitor and assess the post-House landscape, which we know will be fluid. Our primary goals are to ensure that The Citadel continues to field competitive, championship-level teams.” Chase also says of the department’s stance on NIL writ large: “This past spring, prior to the NCAA-House settlement ruling, we were able to execute an NIL-based strategy to provide resources to our basketball program. Recruiting and retention are among our top priorities, and this initiative, which was tremendously supported by our intuitional administration, provided Coach Conroy and the staff the capacity to manage the 2025-26 roster. A significant element of this enterprise was the profound generosity of several individuals, whose commitment and impact on our ability to provide a unique student-athlete experience continues to be nothing short of phenomenal." Asked whether he believes the Power 4 will eventually break away from the NCAA, Chase responds: “I think that’s on the table. Everything at this point is on the table. In my opinion, this is the best time to reset the college athletic landscape. This is so groundbreaking that no one has experience with this. It’s going to take some time before everything is sorted out and it might be a five-year transition period before the waters are calm again.” Chase on the status of the east stands at Johnson Hagood Stadium: “We are working with the city of Charleston and anticipate breaking ground following the 2025 football season and for it to be ready for the next season.” Also: "We are no longer pursuing a concert series at Johnson Hagood Stadium. Period. As we have done in the past and have planned for in the future, we will continue to host appropriate individual events at Johnson Hagood that are beneficial to the entire Charleston community.” Full Q&A. Michigan football is in talks to open the 2026 season in Frankfurt, Germany, for a game against Western Michigan. Michigan AD Warde Manuel: “The University of Michigan is one of the few worldwide brands in college athletics, and the interest in playing an international game would be unique. This would be a great opportunity to teach ‘Go Blue’ to a new group of fans in Germany.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker released the following statement regarding President Donald Trump’s Saving College Sports executive order: "The NCAA is making positive changes for student-athletes and confronting many challenges facing college sports by mandating health and wellness benefits and guaranteeing scholarships, but there are some threats to college sports that federal legislation can effectively address and the Association is advocating with student-athletes and their schools for a bipartisan solution with Congress and the Administration. The Association appreciates the Trump Administration's focus on the life-changing opportunities college sports provides millions of young people and we look forward to working with student-athletes, a bipartisan coalition in Congress and the Trump Administration to enhance college sports for years to come." (link)
|
The Power 5 conferences have also released a statement concerning President Donald Trump’s EO: “We appreciate President Trump's commitment to protecting the future of college athletics. This executive order builds on the momentum created by the bipartisan SCORE Act, which will provide long-term stability to college sports and expand resources to support the overall well-being of student-athletes. With the House settlement now in effect, student-athletes have more financial and academic support than ever before. Now, attention turns to preserving these monumental gains by passing a federal law with national standards for student-athletes' NIL rights. We hope Congress sends federal legislation to President Trump's desk as soon as possible." (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken posits that President Donald Trump can’t save Olympic sports via executive order, but he can push for the federal government to fund them: “And if international domination of swimming, track and field and gymnastics is a priority for America, then what’s the problem with taxpayers having a little skin in the game? It’s not as if public dollars paying for sports is a new concept in this country. You can find the evidence by driving past nearly any pro stadium or arena if you live in a major city.” Wolken goes on to submit that “for many, many years, the USOPC has gotten a free ride on the back of the NCAA system, which has only been possible because universities illegally colluded not to share revenues with the athletes that played a significant role in generating them. But the good news is, all the systems are in place to keep Team USA’s supremacy intact. There has to be a way for more formal collaboration between the USOPC and the NCAA that can save scholarships, development opportunities and teams from being cut. It just needs the funding. And the federal government can make that happen. Trump can make that happen. If he wants a real and lasting legacy as a president who kept the Olympic movement stable at a time of necessary change in college sports, that’s how he can do it. Not an executive order destined to be picked apart and ultimately made irrelevant.” (link)

CollegeAD shares more details of West Virginia AD Wren Baker’s contract extension. Should Baker leave WVU before December 31, 2025, he'll owe a $1M buyout. That figure decreases by $200K each year through 2029, and if he leaves left 2030 or 2031, he’ll owe the Mountaineers $100K. There is no buyout if he leaves in 2032. (link)

American Conference Commissioner Tim Pernetti tells HoopsHQ’s Seth Davis that while he would’ve preferred news about Memphis’ overtures to the Big 12 to have occurred at some point other than when the league announced its rebrand, he understands and was aware of the Tigers’ conversations. “I was in the throes of it when I was an athletic director (at Rutgers), and I understand your job is always to do what’s best for your school. It’s actually a compliment when these things happen. But there are certain things I control and certain things I don’t control. I’m spending 150% of my time on trying to make this conference a place where not only people want to stay, but people want to come.” Pernetti on the league’s overall outlook: “I think we’re in a sweet spot. I don’t have any illusions that we look like an autonomy conference, but I also don’t believe that we look like anybody else. We’re constantly thinking about modernization and the big picture. I’m excited about where we are.” (link)

Iowa AD Beth Goetz shares the latest on plans to renovate Carver-Hawkeye Arena: “We are making really good progress in our fundraising efforts and so I think we’re taking some steps there. … But some other things are just how we best service our fans. Anything from restrooms to how do we figure out how to navigate the congestion that (is) in the concourses? (Do) we need to replace the entire bowl? How do we get students closer? All those things are really key. But the other piece, and it probably goes to the question about why are you still continuing to think about doing the facility project at all? It’s one of our key revenue drivers and right now we just don’t have enough opportunity there to drive revenue through premium seating and through the way that many fans want to enjoy games these days.” (link)
|
More from Goetz, who says of Iowa’s specific rev-share plans that not every athlete will receive money from the university. “We made decisions based on the first year, so we really looked at this as a snapshot in time with the ability to pivot as we needed to. So, certainly focused on our revenue sports. It doesn’t mean you may not have a sprinkling of some others. We have some scholarship pieces that will be part of that as well, but we’ll have to see how it all plays out and how we need to adjust to the market, to what our pers are doing, etc.” (link)

Michigan State AD J Batt says naming rights are “something that have to be very thoughtful. You’ve got to make sure it’s the right partner that aligns with the values and mission of the institution. I certainly don’t have anything to share at the moment, but we’ve got to consider all opportunities. In the changing landscape and the need for revenue, you’ve got to look broadly at all the opportunities you have on your campus.” Batt also shares an update on some of the upgrades to Spartan Stadium: “There will be some changes that fans will notice right out of the gate. Obviously, the renovation of the west side premium looks really good. … The new video boards look great. We’ve really looked at game day opportunities. With Levy coming on board, I think our concessions operations will be dramatically improved. And there are a couple other twists in the game day promotion that you guys will notice.” More from Batt. + West Virginia Football HC Rich Rodriguez has signed his five-year, $18.5M contract, which 247Sports’ Mike Casazza reports is identical to the MOU under which Rodriguez had been working except for one notable difference: “Exhibit B concerns slogans associated with Rodriguez: Hard Edge, Hold the Rope and Spot the Ball. In fact, WVU concedes those are ‘Personal Indicia of Coach.’ WVU agreed that 50% of royalties ‘arising out of the sale or licensing of merchandise by the University’ using those slogans will go to the football team ‘as directed by Coach with the approval of the Director.’” Casazza also reports Rodriguez has a $250K base salary for all five years, and his supplemental pay starts at $3.25M and increases by $100K every year. Rodriguez can also earn bonuses based on wins: Eight wins will be worth $100K, nine wins $200K, 10 wins $300K, 11 wins $500K and 12 wins $700K. More contract details. (link)

TigerSportsReport has obtained what it says is a direct message conversation between former Memphis football student-athlete Tahj Ra-El and UTSA football student-athlete Owen McCown in which Ra-El allegedly leaked elements of Memphis’ defensive playbook to UTSA ahead of the teams’ November 2 matchup last season. TigerSportsReport’s Sam Shoemaker: “Ra-El was previously reported to have left the team in October, but a source close to Memphis tells TigerSportsReport that he was dismissed from the team, adding more context for an alleged motive.” The DM conversation presented by Shoemaker depicts Ra-El sending along the Tigers’ signals and informs McCown of an injury in the secondary the Roadrunners could potentially exploit. The ACC Network’s ACC Huddle will broadcast from the campus of the conference’s marquee football game of the week this season, regardless of the channel the game airs on, Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey reports. Until now, the pregame show originated from the location of the ACC Network’s Saturday night primetime game. ACC Network Senior Director of Programming Jeramy Michiaels tells Rumsey the revamped ACC Huddle will model itself after College GameDay but will avoid broadcasting from the same site when ESPN’s flagship pregame show goes to an ACC campus. Houston is no longer the host school for next year's men's basketball regional at Toyota Center, “paving the way for the Cougars to potentially play the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament in their own backyard.” The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte: “A source told the Houston Chronicle that the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority will take the lead on which local school will now handle the host duties, which include logistics and behind-the-scenes responsibilities. UH had petitioned for a waiver to be eligible to play in the South Regional while also serving as host but was denied by the NCAA.” Duarte reports Rice is likely to step in as the new host school. The NFL is close to a deal with ESPN that would give the league a 10% equity stake in the network and offer ESPN total control over NFL Network and NFL RedZone, according to Puck’s John Ourand, who adds: “ESPN has been involved in on-again, off-again conversations with the NFL, which has been looking for solutions for its NFL Network, whose fortunes have risen and fallen with the cable business as a whole. But ESPN brass was interested in more than NFL Network and its seven live games per season: [ESPN Chairman Jimmy] Pitaro also wanted NFL RedZone, which would help realize his sports hub fantasies by offering subscribers live look-ins to games every Sunday. … For ESPN, getting into bed with the owner of the most popular programming on TV was too good to pass up, especially given the coming battles over the NFL’s rights. The company is now a veritable forever partner, likely edging out other legacy players as the league moves to streaming. The league, after all, is virtually certain to exercise an out in its media deals, so that it can come to market early. The streamers that covet NFL programming view the primetime packages – ESPN’s Monday Night Football and NBC’s Sunday Night Football – as the easiest ones to poach.” Ourand also notes that “LightShed Partners suggest that this deal should make it easier for ABC and ESPN to spin off, noting in a recent report that ‘the NFL’s ESPN stake should ease investor concerns about the league opting out of its current media rights deal after 2029.’” (link)
