Gettysburg names Frostburg State (DII) AD/alumnus Troy Dell as its new AD. St. John Fisher removes the interim tag from AD Jennifer Granger, who has been leading the Cardinals since June 2024. President Donald Trump has signed the “Saving College Sports” executive order, which “requires the preservation and, where possible, expansion of opportunities for scholarships and collegiate athletic competition in women’s and non-revenue sports; prohibits third-party, pay-for-play payments to collegiate athletes. This does not apply to legitimate, fair-market-value compensation that a third party provides to an athlete, such as for a brand endorsement; provides that any revenue-sharing permitted between universities and collegiate athletes should be implemented in a manner that protects women’s and non-revenue sports; directs the Secretary of Labor and the National Labor Relations Board to clarify the status of student-athletes in order to preserve non-revenue sports and the irreplaceable educational and developmental opportunities that college sports provide; directs the Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission to take appropriate actions to protect student-athletes’ rights and safeguard the long-term stability of college athletics from endless, debilitating antitrust and other legal challenges; and directs the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy and the Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison to consult with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams and other organizations to protect the role of college athletics in developing world-class American athletes.” (link); Full text. NCAA President Charlie Baker released the following statement regarding President Donald Trump’s Saving College Sports executive order: "The NCAA is making positive changes for student-athletes and confronting many challenges facing college sports by mandating health and wellness benefits and guaranteeing scholarships, but there are some threats to college sports that federal legislation can effectively address and the Association is advocating with student-athletes and their schools for a bipartisan solution with Congress and the Administration. The Association appreciates the Trump Administration's focus on the life-changing opportunities college sports provides millions of young people and we look forward to working with student-athletes, a bipartisan coalition in Congress and the Trump Administration to enhance college sports for years to come." Earlier in the day yesterday, NCAA President Charlie Baker said at the National Press Club that he’s open to executive order ideas but that “our focus needs to be on the legislative process,” per USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz. Baker said he would be “fine” with legislation that would include that the NCAA gets antitrust exemption related to rules-making that initially would cover 2-3 years. (link)

From the Halls of Congress…
+ U.S. Congresswoman Summer L. Lee (D-PA) and U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) reintroduced the College Athlete Right to Organize Act to ensure college athletes across the country are granted the right to collectively bargain and unionize. Specifically, the bill would: amend the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) to define any college athlete as an employee of their college if they receive direct compensation from their college, whether via grant-in-aid or other forms of compensation, and that compensation requires participation in intercollegiate sports; amend the NLRA to define public colleges, alongside private institutions, as employers within the context of intercollegiate sports, allowing athletes to collectively bargain at any college; facilitate multiemployer bargaining units for college athletes by directing the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to consider the colleges within an athletic conference as part of a bargaining unit with which college athletes can negotiate; assert the NLRB's jurisdiction over all institutions of higher education within the context of intercollegiate athletics and on all collective bargaining and representation matters as well as labor disputes; prohibit any agreements, such as scholarship agreements, which waive the right of athletes to collectively bargain; and ensure the current tax status of college athletes' scholarships and other benefits does not change due to their employment status, nor does it affect their eligibility for financial aid. Murphy: “The multibillion-dollar college sports industry would not exist without the labor of college athletes. Between grueling two-a-day practices, cross country travel, and primetime game days, it’s absurd to claim these athletes are amateurs who don't deserve a seat at the negotiating table. While the NCAA is cozying up to the Trump administration to try to protect its profits at the expense of these athletes, our bill would empower them to form unions and negotiate for better revenue-sharing agreements, working conditions, and health and safety protections.” (link)
+ U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Representative Lori Trahan (D-MA) have reintroduced legislation concerning college sports that covers a variety of compensation topics, including helping international athletes with NIL deals. Specifically, the College Athlete Economic Freedom Act would: establish an unrestricted federal right for college athletes and prospective college athletes to market the use of their NIL – individually and as a group – by prohibiting colleges, conferences, and the NCAA from setting or enforcing rules that restrict this right or otherwise colluding to limit how athletes can use their NIL; protect athletes' ability to retain representation as they see fit, including lawyers, agents, and collective representatives (i.e. players associations) while prohibiting the NCAA or conferences from regulating athlete representation; ensure colleges and affiliated NIL collectives do not discriminate by gender, race, or sport in the facilitation of NIL deals along with requiring collectives to register with the FTC and report the NIL deals they have facilitated so athletes and stakeholders asserting discrimination have all the information they need to address it; and ensure equitable opportunities for college athletes to market their NIL by asserting that institutional support by colleges, conferences, or the NCAA for NIL opportunities is made available to all college athletes, along with commissioning a market analysis of NIL monetization with recommendations for improving opportunities across race, gender, and sport. Wilmington receives a record $23M gift from late Women’s Basketball HC/Professor of Accounting Jerry Scheve to create the Scheve Athletic Center, which will include an indoor track and Hall of Champions, along with a number of upgrades for the Quakers, including new bleachers. AD Matt Croci: “A gift of this magnitude and scope will change the trajectory of our athletic department. It truly touches all of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, programs and physical spaces. I think it gives an incredible answer to the question, ‘What does excellence look like at Wilmington College?’” (link)

Mary Washington will rename its soccer field after former HC Roy Gordon. With more than $385K raised for Men’s and Women’s Soccer over the last two years, AD Patrick Catullo: “Our goal is to maintain this momentum and reach $500,000. These improvements will elevate the program, provide top-tier facilities and attract the best future talent. Additionally, the success of this project will help drive future fundraising efforts across other UMW Athletic facilities.” (link)
