NCAA President Charlie Baker released the following statement regarding President Donald Trump’s Saving College Sports executive order: "The NCAA is making positive changes for student-athletes and confronting many challenges facing college sports by mandating health and wellness benefits and guaranteeing scholarships, but there are some threats to college sports that federal legislation can effectively address and the Association is advocating with student-athletes and their schools for a bipartisan solution with Congress and the Administration. The Association appreciates the Trump Administration's focus on the life-changing opportunities college sports provides millions of young people and we look forward to working with student-athletes, a bipartisan coalition in Congress and the Trump Administration to enhance college sports for years to come." (link)

The Power 5 conferences have also released a statement concerning President Donald Trump’s EO: “We appreciate President Trump's commitment to protecting the future of college athletics. This executive order builds on the momentum created by the bipartisan SCORE Act, which will provide long-term stability to college sports and expand resources to support the overall well-being of student-athletes. With the House settlement now in effect, student-athletes have more financial and academic support than ever before. Now, attention turns to preserving these monumental gains by passing a federal law with national standards for student-athletes' NIL rights. We hope Congress sends federal legislation to President Trump's desk as soon as possible." (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken posits that President Donald Trump can’t save Olympic sports via executive order, but he can push for the federal government to fund them: “And if international domination of swimming, track and field and gymnastics is a priority for America, then what’s the problem with taxpayers having a little skin in the game? It’s not as if public dollars paying for sports is a new concept in this country. You can find the evidence by driving past nearly any pro stadium or arena if you live in a major city.” Wolken goes on to submit that “for many, many years, the USOPC has gotten a free ride on the back of the NCAA system, which has only been possible because universities illegally colluded not to share revenues with the athletes that played a significant role in generating them. But the good news is, all the systems are in place to keep Team USA’s supremacy intact. There has to be a way for more formal collaboration between the USOPC and the NCAA that can save scholarships, development opportunities and teams from being cut. It just needs the funding. And the federal government can make that happen. Trump can make that happen. If he wants a real and lasting legacy as a president who kept the Olympic movement stable at a time of necessary change in college sports, that’s how he can do it. Not an executive order destined to be picked apart and ultimately made irrelevant.” (link)

CollegeAD shares more details of West Virginia AD Wren Baker’s contract extension. Should Baker leave WVU before December 31, 2025, he'll owe a $1M buyout. That figure decreases by $200K each year through 2029, and if he leaves left 2030 or 2031, he’ll owe the Mountaineers $100K. There is no buyout if he leaves in 2032. (link)

American Conference Commissioner Tim Pernetti tells HoopsHQ’s Seth Davis that while he would’ve preferred news about Memphis’ overtures to the Big 12 to have occurred at some point other than when the league announced its rebrand, he understands and was aware of the Tigers’ conversations. “I was in the throes of it when I was an athletic director (at Rutgers), and I understand your job is always to do what’s best for your school. It’s actually a compliment when these things happen. But there are certain things I control and certain things I don’t control. I’m spending 150% of my time on trying to make this conference a place where not only people want to stay, but people want to come.” Pernetti on the league’s overall outlook: “I think we’re in a sweet spot. I don’t have any illusions that we look like an autonomy conference, but I also don’t believe that we look like anybody else. We’re constantly thinking about modernization and the big picture. I’m excited about where we are.” (link)

Iowa AD Beth Goetz shares the latest on plans to renovate Carver-Hawkeye Arena: “We are making really good progress in our fundraising efforts and so I think we’re taking some steps there. … But some other things are just how we best service our fans. Anything from restrooms to how do we figure out how to navigate the congestion that (is) in the concourses? (Do) we need to replace the entire bowl? How do we get students closer? All those things are really key. But the other piece, and it probably goes to the question about why are you still continuing to think about doing the facility project at all? It’s one of our key revenue drivers and right now we just don’t have enough opportunity there to drive revenue through premium seating and through the way that many fans want to enjoy games these days.” (link)
|
More from Goetz, who says of Iowa’s specific rev-share plans that not every athlete will receive money from the university. “We made decisions based on the first year, so we really looked at this as a snapshot in time with the ability to pivot as we needed to. So, certainly focused on our revenue sports. It doesn’t mean you may not have a sprinkling of some others. We have some scholarship pieces that will be part of that as well, but we’ll have to see how it all plays out and how we need to adjust to the market, to what our pers are doing, etc.” (link)

Michigan State AD J Batt says naming rights are “something that have to be very thoughtful. You’ve got to make sure it’s the right partner that aligns with the values and mission of the institution. I certainly don’t have anything to share at the moment, but we’ve got to consider all opportunities. In the changing landscape and the need for revenue, you’ve got to look broadly at all the opportunities you have on your campus.” Batt also shares an update on some of the upgrades to Spartan Stadium: “There will be some changes that fans will notice right out of the gate. Obviously, the renovation of the west side premium looks really good. … The new video boards look great. We’ve really looked at game day opportunities. With Levy coming on board, I think our concessions operations will be dramatically improved. And there are a couple other twists in the game day promotion that you guys will notice.” More from Batt. + West Virginia Football HC Rich Rodriguez has signed his five-year, $18.5M contract, which 247Sports’ Mike Casazza reports is identical to the MOU under which Rodriguez had been working except for one notable difference: “Exhibit B concerns slogans associated with Rodriguez: Hard Edge, Hold the Rope and Spot the Ball. In fact, WVU concedes those are ‘Personal Indicia of Coach.’ WVU agreed that 50% of royalties ‘arising out of the sale or licensing of merchandise by the University’ using those slogans will go to the football team ‘as directed by Coach with the approval of the Director.’” Casazza also reports Rodriguez has a $250K base salary for all five years, and his supplemental pay starts at $3.25M and increases by $100K every year. Rodriguez can also earn bonuses based on wins: Eight wins will be worth $100K, nine wins $200K, 10 wins $300K, 11 wins $500K and 12 wins $700K. More contract details. (link)

UNLV football student-athlete Jackson Hasz has been denied a preliminary injunction that would have allowed him to play in 2025-26. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “NCAA's eligibility case wins, I think, are around 22 or 23 compared to 2-3 losses.” (link)

TigerSportsReport has obtained what it says is a direct message conversation between former Memphis football student-athlete Tahj Ra-El and UTSA football student-athlete Owen McCown in which Ra-El allegedly leaked elements of Memphis’ defensive playbook to UTSA ahead of the teams’ November 2 matchup last season. TigerSportsReport’s Sam Shoemaker: “Ra-El was previously reported to have left the team in October, but a source close to Memphis tells TigerSportsReport that he was dismissed from the team, adding more context for an alleged motive.” The DM conversation presented by Shoemaker depicts Ra-El sending along the Tigers’ signals and informs McCown of an injury in the secondary the Roadrunners could potentially exploit. The ACC Network’s ACC Huddle will broadcast from the campus of the conference’s marquee football game of the week this season, regardless of the channel the game airs on, Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey reports. Until now, the pregame show originated from the location of the ACC Network’s Saturday night primetime game. ACC Network Senior Director of Programming Jeramy Michiaels tells Rumsey the revamped ACC Huddle will model itself after College GameDay but will avoid broadcasting from the same site when ESPN’s flagship pregame show goes to an ACC campus. Houston is no longer the host school for next year's men's basketball regional at Toyota Center, “paving the way for the Cougars to potentially play the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament in their own backyard.” The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte: “A source told the Houston Chronicle that the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority will take the lead on which local school will now handle the host duties, which include logistics and behind-the-scenes responsibilities. UH had petitioned for a waiver to be eligible to play in the South Regional while also serving as host but was denied by the NCAA.” Duarte reports Rice is likely to step in as the new host school. The NFL is close to a deal with ESPN that would give the league a 10% equity stake in the network and offer ESPN total control over NFL Network and NFL RedZone, according to Puck’s John Ourand, who adds: “ESPN has been involved in on-again, off-again conversations with the NFL, which has been looking for solutions for its NFL Network, whose fortunes have risen and fallen with the cable business as a whole. But ESPN brass was interested in more than NFL Network and its seven live games per season: [ESPN Chairman Jimmy] Pitaro also wanted NFL RedZone, which would help realize his sports hub fantasies by offering subscribers live look-ins to games every Sunday. … For ESPN, getting into bed with the owner of the most popular programming on TV was too good to pass up, especially given the coming battles over the NFL’s rights. The company is now a veritable forever partner, likely edging out other legacy players as the league moves to streaming. The league, after all, is virtually certain to exercise an out in its media deals, so that it can come to market early. The streamers that covet NFL programming view the primetime packages – ESPN’s Monday Night Football and NBC’s Sunday Night Football – as the easiest ones to poach.” Ourand also notes that “LightShed Partners suggest that this deal should make it easier for ABC and ESPN to spin off, noting in a recent report that ‘the NFL’s ESPN stake should ease investor concerns about the league opting out of its current media rights deal after 2029.’” (link)

President Donald Trump has signed the “Saving College Sports” executive order, which “requires the preservation and, where possible, expansion of opportunities for scholarships and collegiate athletic competition in women’s and non-revenue sports; prohibits third-party, pay-for-play payments to collegiate athletes. This does not apply to legitimate, fair-market-value compensation that a third party provides to an athlete, such as for a brand endorsement; provides that any revenue-sharing permitted between universities and collegiate athletes should be implemented in a manner that protects women’s and non-revenue sports; directs the Secretary of Labor and the National Labor Relations Board to clarify the status of student-athletes in order to preserve non-revenue sports and the irreplaceable educational and developmental opportunities that college sports provide; directs the Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission to take appropriate actions to protect student-athletes’ rights and safeguard the long-term stability of college athletics from endless, debilitating antitrust and other legal challenges; and directs the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy and the Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison to consult with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams and other organizations to protect the role of college athletics in developing world-class American athletes.” (link); Full text. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that any expansion of the NCAA basketball tournament this year is “growing more unlikely,” citing President Charlie Baker himself in suggesting that logistical issues will likely push any expansion to 2026-27. Speaking to the National Press Club, Baker continued to show his support for expanding the tournament from 68 to 72 or 76 teams. “There are every year some really good teams that don’t get to the tournament for a bunch of reasons. One of the reasons is we have 32 automatic qualifiers. I love that and think it’s great and never want that to change, but that means there’s only 36 slots left for everybody else. I don’t buy the idea that some of the teams that currently get left out aren’t good. I think they are. And I think that sucks.” (link); Expanding on the logistical challenges of tournament expansion, USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz quotes Baker as saying “it’s a lot of airplanes in a very short period of time.” (link)

Earlier in the day, NCAA President Charlie Baker said at the National Press Club that he’s open to executive order ideas but that “our focus needs to be on the legislative process,” per USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz. Baker said he would be “fine” with legislation that would include that the NCAA gets antitrust exemption related to rules-making that initially would cover 2-3 years. (link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker has signed a contract extension that would keep him in Morgantown through the end of 2032, per Metro News’ Joe Brocato. The deal includes annual $100K raises, from $1.3M this year to $2M in 2032. Annual “retention bonuses” each year start at $200K and move up to $500K in 2030. New WVU President Michael T. Benson: “I am very impressed with the operation and how well he is doing in terms of revenue generation and forward thinking about where we want to take the University.” (link)

MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher got this year’s football kickoff started with an address in which he stated: “The history of college sports is replete with examples of programs that search for loopholes or simply circumvent or ignore the rules. For this settlement to persist, the membership must behave in a manner that was approved by the federal appeals court. Additionally, the House settlement is not the end of the road. It is step one of what are likely to be many, many, many more steps. Congressional assistance is necessary if we are to establish a unified NIL standard and have legal protections to develop and enforce eligibility rules that promote academic success. We are seeking to balance multiple goals: economic opportunities for student-athletes and successful educational outcomes. This is what makes college sports different from professional sports. The goal is to get a college degree. And we need to have eligibility and transfer rules that we can enforce and support and facilitate that outcome.” Steinbrecher also contends the SCORE Act is “well worth serious reflection as we need federal assistance in balancing these economic issues and educational outcomes.” Remaining at 12 teams “under the current format would be a perfectly acceptable outcome” for the College Football Playoff, as Steinbrecher explains: “The [MAC] is interested in 14 or 16 teams, but the details are important. Unlike the CFP revenue distribution, which draws heavily from past performance and brand, selection for the CFP should be forward-facing, honoring conference champions and non-champions that had exemplary years. The CFP selection committee…does an exceptional job. We should focus on ways in which we can enhance existing metrics as well as the development of new data and metrics to assist the committee with the challenging job of populating the bracket.” Full address. From the Halls of Congress… + U.S. Congresswoman Summer L. Lee (D-PA) and U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) reintroduced the College Athlete Right to Organize Act to ensure college athletes across the country are granted the right to collectively bargain and unionize. Specifically, the bill would: amend the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) to define any college athlete as an employee of their college if they receive direct compensation from their college, whether via grant-in-aid or other forms of compensation, and that compensation requires participation in intercollegiate sports; amend the NLRA to define public colleges, alongside private institutions, as employers within the context of intercollegiate sports, allowing athletes to collectively bargain at any college; facilitate multiemployer bargaining units for college athletes by directing the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to consider the colleges within an athletic conference as part of a bargaining unit with which college athletes can negotiate; assert the NLRB's jurisdiction over all institutions of higher education within the context of intercollegiate athletics and on all collective bargaining and representation matters as well as labor disputes; prohibit any agreements, such as scholarship agreements, which waive the right of athletes to collectively bargain; and ensure the current tax status of college athletes' scholarships and other benefits does not change due to their employment status, nor does it affect their eligibility for financial aid. Murphy: “The multibillion-dollar college sports industry would not exist without the labor of college athletes. Between grueling two-a-day practices, cross country travel, and primetime game days, it’s absurd to claim these athletes are amateurs who don't deserve a seat at the negotiating table. While the NCAA is cozying up to the Trump administration to try to protect its profits at the expense of these athletes, our bill would empower them to form unions and negotiate for better revenue-sharing agreements, working conditions, and health and safety protections.” (link) + U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Representative Lori Trahan (D-MA) have reintroduced legislation concerning college sports that covers a variety of compensation topics, including helping international athletes with NIL deals. Specifically, the College Athlete Economic Freedom Act would: establish an unrestricted federal right for college athletes and prospective college athletes to market the use of their NIL – individually and as a group – by prohibiting colleges, conferences, and the NCAA from setting or enforcing rules that restrict this right or otherwise colluding to limit how athletes can use their NIL; protect athletes' ability to retain representation as they see fit, including lawyers, agents, and collective representatives (i.e. players associations) while prohibiting the NCAA or conferences from regulating athlete representation; ensure colleges and affiliated NIL collectives do not discriminate by gender, race, or sport in the facilitation of NIL deals along with requiring collectives to register with the FTC and report the NIL deals they have facilitated so athletes and stakeholders asserting discrimination have all the information they need to address it; and ensure equitable opportunities for college athletes to market their NIL by asserting that institutional support by colleges, conferences, or the NCAA for NIL opportunities is made available to all college athletes, along with commissioning a market analysis of NIL monetization with recommendations for improving opportunities across race, gender, and sport.
