Southern Maine AD John Sutyak joins The AD’s Office to dive into hiring coaches, maintaining relationships and more. When hiring, Sutyak has two key questions: “Are you a good person and do you work hard? I think those are the two most important things for me because if you're a good person and you have a good work ethic, you're going to put the work in and people are going to gravitate to you. They're going to follow you in a good way. Even if you're not as good of a coach, you can learn how to be a better coach. You can learn how to adjust your tactics or anything like that, but by now, you are who you are. […] I tell the coaches you run your program. I'm not stepping in unless you do something: you violate my trust or you do something that I might have to start micromanaging you. I always joke if we only want to strangle each other three times a year, we'll have a great relationship. You're not always going to like the decisions I make and I'm not always going to like the things you come to me with; we just have to work through that. I think that's what I try and I try and sell them on. I'm not micromanaging you. It's your program. Run it as you see fit. I step in when I have to and I just be honest. I'll be honest with you. You'll be honest with me. And as long as we can work off that foundation of trust, I think it's going to be fine.” To create and maintain cache with coaches and student-athletes, Sutyak tries to attend 70% of all home games, which he tracks, and at least one away game per year. “But when they see you at the games, like when they know you're invested, when you have to have hard conversations, they can't sit there and tell you [you don’t care].” More. Albright ended FY25 with a $10M budget surplus after major cuts to operating expenses and its workforce and the sale of real estate and artwork. Spotlight PA’s Amanda Fries chats with Interim CFO/VP of Finance Larry Bomback about what’s next as the college worked out of its “gigantic structural deficit.” Bomback: “It is the result of these one-time things which are not going to be repeatable, but this does give us the runway that we need to get into next year, so that we can see all these enrollment changes and programmatic changes … really take full effect. […] We've already turned a gigantic corner, and now we honestly get to focus on the fun stuff. Now we get to focus on top-line revenue, and that's going to be done through this strategy of really going all in on athletics and introducing some of these new academic programs that are going to differentiate us from the competition.” The Lions are set to begin Men’s Wrestling this year, with STUNT and Women’s Flag Football already announced as future additions. The USOPC has “effectively barred transgender women from competing in women's sports, telling the federations overseeing swimming, athletics and other sports it has an ‘obligation to comply’ with an executive order previously issued by President Donald Trump,” according to the AP. USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland and President Gene Sykes explain in a letter that “as a federally chartered organization, we have an obligation to comply with federal expectations. Our revised policy emphasizes the importance of ensuring fair and safe competition environments for women. All National Governing Bodies are required to update their applicable policies in alignment." (link)

Colleges and universities boasting a high percentage of international students could face a credit risk as a result of federal government targeting of those individuals per a new release from Moody’s Ratings. Inside Higher Ed’s Johanna Alonso reports that those most at risk are the 11% of American institutions where international students make up more than 20% of the student body as well as those already dealing with financial struggles. From the Moody’s report: “The reduction in international students presents a credit risk for universities heavily reliant on this demographic because of potential declines in tuition income, as international students typically pay full tuition fees. Additionally, with declining numbers of high school students over the next several years in the U.S. leading to fewer domestic students, universities intending to fill the gap with more international students may fall short.” Overall, Moody’s calculations note that about one in five colleges’ and universities’ EBITDA (earnings before interest, depreciation and amortization) margins would shrink by 0.5 to 2.0 percentage points, potentially pushing them into negative territory, but observe that the model does not account for any institutional steps taken to mitigate those losses, especially at wealthier institutions.
