Page notes the discussion is ongoing, adding: “Maybe the status quo is where we just need to stay. We'll let the membership decide that.” With NPI proposed to go into effect in 2026-27, Page is supportive of the shift away from selection committees given that “it’s hard not to have subjectivity. […] So in today's day and age, with the amount of work that people do, with the amount of work put on the NCAA even, if this can at least give time back to people, and we know that the metric itself is picking – maybe you have one or two that maybe would've gotten in if you would've gone the old way – but it's really selecting the same people, personally, I'm for it. Back in the day, we used to have people that would sit on these ranking and selection calls for eight hours. I don't want my coach sitting on a call eight hours a day or my associate AD sitting on a call eight hours a day. If this is actually doing the same thing and doing it correctly, why not look at it? Mary AD Marcus Wagner sits down with Hot Mic WDAY’s Dom Izzo to dive into the Marauders’ plan to fully fund DII scholarships. The goal of full funding was the ultimate goal when the Marauders Armada was formed, as Wagner adds: “We, like I said, set out with that goal in mind a number of years ago, and now we're in a spot where the university is able to help out in a really exceptional way, so long as we keep up our end of the bargain. The work's not done. It's not like we've arrived and great, everybody can pack up and go home. There are very few out there doing it and the NSIC is incredibly deep. Division II is a competitive brand of athletics, top to bottom, and so we are excited about what that means for us here on the campus.” Across the 18 sports, some sports were already fully-funded and some will see an increase. As for how the fundraising need impacts Wagner’s role, he tells Izzo not a ton will change in his efforts, just the focus, adding UMary will need to be more efficient in their efforts and supportive when coaches are out in the community. With the Marauders’ new football stadium to come online in 2027, Wagner: “The work that's been done leading up to this point maybe isn't getting the recognition. We're in phase two of a three-phase capital campaign that started over a decade ago and our administration, our board of trustees, former administration even at that point had the vision to say, here's where we want to be and here's what we want the University of Mary to look like. If we're going to remain viable in a really competitive, really volatile higher education market, we can't just do one thing. We've got to do all of these things. So we've added a school of engineering, we've revamped our school of health sciences, we've added residence halls, we've got on-campus dining 24/7/365, new classrooms, and new study spaces. And so again, the athletic facility really is just an extension of all of that.” (link)

Sportico’s Jacob Feldman digs into Dallas Baptist’s choice to be one of just nine schools to opt in to revenue sharing despite the majority of its sports competing at a non-Division I-level. For AD Matt Duce, with the DBU baseball program a perennial national DI contender, the choice came from his determination to keep the Patriots competitive. Duce: “The decision was not so much if we are going to opt in or not, but just how we’re going to adapt to the new climate. If you don’t do it, then you’re gonna have a really hard time competing.” Per Feldman, DBU’s baseball program “anchors its school’s athletic department while also serving as an attention- and credibility-driver for the entire university, which has an undergraduate enrollment of roughly 2,850.” With new rules now in place, DBU will be able to go beyond the traditional 11.7 scholarships permitted to baseball programs, but it remains to be seen that if by prioritizing a sport like baseball, a school like Dallas Baptist can find an advantage over larger schools that are diverting the majority of their resources to football and men’s and women’s basketball. Feldman notes the school declined to share how much money they’ll allocate to baseball student-athletes in 2025-26, but did note they’re looking to maximize the number and continue YoY growth. Duce: “We pride ourselves on competing. And so that’s where we’re at. Our vision is not changing, our mission is not changing. It’s just how you do business is a little bit different, and we’re going to adapt, just like we always have.” (link)

CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams-Parker chats with SB Nation’s Mitchell Northam about the league’s commitment to Women’s Flag Football, noting CIAA members are intending to play again this spring after holding their first club championship this past spring. As for what’s ahead: “Once it becomes an official sport for (the NCAA), most likely it appears that our conference is going to have it as a varsity sport. Right now it’s a club sport for us because I think we’re just trying to figure out the interest, but I think there’s a strong interest in our conference to have it as a varsity sport. And then in 2026-27, my hope is that it will become a varsity sport. So, we’ll have a season and we’ll do scheduling. […] We’ve been talking about (flag football) probably before it even got bigger. I just think for us is, where does the funding come from? We want to add sports, but we don’t want to take away the current sports that we already have. Hopefully we’ll get some additional funding this year, we’re working on that as well. But if not, I still think the schools are committed to having that platform. It’s great with numbers for gender equity, and just beyond that, there’s interest in participation.” (link)

The USOPC has “effectively barred transgender women from competing in women's sports, telling the federations overseeing swimming, athletics and other sports it has an ‘obligation to comply’ with an executive order previously issued by President Donald Trump,” according to the AP. USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland and President Gene Sykes explain in a letter that “as a federally chartered organization, we have an obligation to comply with federal expectations. Our revised policy emphasizes the importance of ensuring fair and safe competition environments for women. All National Governing Bodies are required to update their applicable policies in alignment." (link)

California State says it’s facing a $2.3B budget shortfall, and Cal Matters’ Mikhail Zinshteyn observes: “How the nation’s largest public four-year university system will generate that revenue is anyone’s guess, as annual tuition increases of 6% that kicked in last year and an influx of state taxpayer support have been insufficient to pay for Cal State’s growing labor, energy and education expenses. … More state support is increasingly unlikely, as California budget experts forecast multibillion-dollar budget shortfalls worsened by severe federal cuts to major public safety-net programs, like Medicaid, and possible cuts to financial aid.” Cal State Asst. Vice Chancellor for Finance Jeni Kitchell: “This growing gap demonstrates why we need immediate action to achieve financial sustainability. We cannot sustain our current level of funding, especially while operating from a position of underfunding.” The system fought off a $375M proposed cut to its state allocation this year, instead receiving a $144 million cut — a 3% reduction in its state support. Lawmakers are offering Cal State a zero-interest loan to make up for that cut and promised to restore the money next year. Cal State has also already cut more than 1,200 staff positions across the system in the past two years, reduced student support staff by 7% and terminated 1,400 courses during a period of ongoing budget deficits. Cal State trustee Jack McGrory notes that “we were promised a five-year compact” of increasing state funding and trustees approved 10% or more in salary increases for workers the past two years based on those promises. “We did rely on the promise, and the promise was violated, and that’s the story that we have to tell, and it’s unfortunate, and it’s going to put our relationships with the unions and our employees in a really bad situation.” More.
