According to Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly, the NCAA “has not conducted various DI governance meetings this month, as the NCAA Board of Directors will act upon the proposed new governance structure next week and NCAA staff has delayed various governance meetings until that action is taken. Unfortunately, if the new governance structure is approved, many conferences will not be ‘in the room where it happens.’ Those conferences not named to either the new DI Board of Directors or DI Administrative Committee will need to get their information from abbreviated NCAA updates or media reports after meetings. I have been vocal on this governance overhaul throughout the summer and will continue to be vocal in the time leading up to the vote. Representation is vital to protect the experience of student-athletes in The Big West, and to best inform our member institutions first-hand on what is happening in DI and how it may impact them. We have received a glimpse this summer of how future governance may work with the CFP-4 having 65% weighted voting and the NCAA handing many responsibilities to those four conferences. In summary, my earlier positions have not changed.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips Q&As with SB Nation’s Mitchell Northam and says the roster size component of the House settlement “will only provide more opportunities and provide more funding for our student-athletes in our Olympic sports. The rev share and the NIL piece of this thing, I don’t think anybody knows just yet. But what I would say, for our conference, I know that our schools are committed to continuing to support broad-based programming at an incredibly high level. This conference, for 73 years, has been a leader when it comes to opportunities for women and Title IX and broad-based programming. We have 15 women’s sports and 13 male sports. So, I think early signs are, with these changes and the roster limits and scholarships and some of those things, as well as some revenue now directly benefiting student athletes, we’ll be in a good place.” Phillips also comments on the NCAA championships media rights deal with ESPN and whether women’s basketball is valued appropriately within it: “I don’t think there’s ever a TV deal that you have, that you don’t go back and wish maybe you had a little bit more. I would think that as we watch what happens in the next couple years that [NCAA President] Charlie [Baker] would, you know, likely reengage with ESPN.” While the NCAA has made strides in directing more funding to women’s hoops, Phillips acknowledges that “we still have a ways to go, and we don’t want to just be complacent about it, or say that there’s not more work to be done, because there is.” (link)

More from The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman who digs into how Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti successfully secured support for the “4-4-2-2-1” College Football Playoff model within the league as Dochterman notes that ADs likely support Petitti’s plan because it increases late-season game value, which in turn boosts attendance. Illinois AD Josh Whitman: “It allows us, in an environment where, potentially, everybody’s not playing the same number of conference games, to make our conference games the determining factor in terms of how you access the postseason. It allows us to play more meaningful football games with more schools deep into November.“ With the ACC and Big 12 publicly backing a 5+11 model, a looming Dec. 1 deadline for the Big Ten and SEC to agree upon a CFP format to take effect in 2026 and the SEC lukewarm on Petitti’s plan, he remains committed. Petitti: “Your obligation is to give fans things that are meaningful. They care about the tradition of it and all that. But we’re also trying to get the next generation of fans to connect and have those moments, those opportunities. I think the players deserve it.” (link)

Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene tells Pitt Magazine that he believes Pitt is positioned to seize the opportunity provided by the industry’s new landscape, adding: “We must be both bold and strategic. We must double down on what makes Pitt special – world-class academics, a proud community and a tradition of grit and excellence. But it also means making smart investments: in our people, our infrastructure and in services that help student-athletes thrive. We also need to be future-focused. That includes enhancing our philanthropic efforts, growing revenues in innovative ways and aligning with corporate partners. Proudly, we’ve always punched above our weight class, and we are building this department to last all twelve rounds.” That said, Greene notes that “real NIL impacts only about 1% of our overall student-athlete population, concentrated in football and men’s basketball. We recognize that NIL quickly turned into the pay-for-play model that we’re experiencing today, which impacts additional student-athletes across those sports and more. But what hasn’t changed is that 100% of our student-athletes should be focused on their holistic development, and we have an obligation to accompany them on their journey.” (link)

Southern Illinois AD Tim Leonard and SIU Edwardsville AD Andrew Gavin join SIU System President Dan Mahony to discuss how they’re navigating the evolving ecosystem of college athletics, and Gavin explains the roster limit component was “not a significant factor in whether or not we were going to ultimately opt in or opt out” as an institution that doesn’t play football and doesn’t carry “significant rosters among our sports in general.” Leonard explains the decision to opt in was due to a desire to be “proactive, not reactive. Whether we like it or not, this is where college athletics is headed, and we’re committed to being a Division I athletics department. But most importantly, we’re committed to being a very competitive Division I athletics department. So we just felt like this is where it’s going. By opting in I think it’s easier to move forward in the new world with all the new rules and policies that’ll be put in place. So I think it’s going to be a smoother transition for us, not that any of this is smooth. … In the end this is about building a model for the future…and we just felt like opting in gave us that best opportunity.” Full conversation. A federal court in North Carolina has granted the plaintiffs' motion to certify an injunctive and damages class of Division I tennis players in Brantmeier v. NCAA, per Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich. For us non-lawyers, Venable LLP Partner Philip Sheng explains the “judge in Reese Brantmeier’s lawsuit challenging the NCAA’s prize money rules has officially been certified as a class action.” Ehrlich notes that “this is a fascinating case – and one that threatens to take another brick out of the NCAA's amateurism definitions and eligibility systems. One to watch as it moves towards a potential trial.” (link, link)

A New Jersey federal district court has granted Seton Hall's motion for summary judgment against former basketball players Myles Powell and Jasmine Smith, dismissing their tort claims against the university. Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich: “Both Powell and Smith had claimed that the university misdiagnosed serious injuries, allowing them to play on and aggravate them. Powell says he was told to play on a torn meniscus, tanking his NBA draft stock. Smith says her misdiagnosed knee damage ended her career. … The court found that the trainers satisfied their duty of care, which was only to refer the players to doctors for diagnosis and defer to those opinions.” (link); Full opinion. Now that the Skydance-Paramount deal is being finalized, CBS will likely invest in sports even further, per The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, who notes: “CBS Sports, they’ve been a player, but they've kind of been somebody you look at who maintains. They added the Champions League a couple of years ago, they added the Big Ten after they lost the SEC, but now they can be aggressive bidders.” (link)

SBJ shares several takeaways from the SBJ Ticketing Roundtable discussion earlier this summer. Panelists included StubHub Head of Partnerships and Business Development Adam Budelli, New York Mets SVP of Ticketing and Premium Experience Jake Bye, SeatGeek Co-Founder/President of Supply Russ D’Souza, Kraft Analytics Group CEO Jessica Gelman, Comcast Spectacor Chief Revenue and Business Officer Todd Glickman, BSE Global EVP for Ticketing Paul Kavanaugh, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment EVP for Ticketing and Premium Hospitality Brian Norman, Eventellect Co-Founder Patrick Ryan, New York City FC CEO Brad Sims and NBA EVP for Team Marketing and Business Operations Jonathan Tillman. Some highlights: Norman says of the biggest areas of opportunity in live sports ticketing that the conversation has shifted from how to get data on the fans who come to venues to “taking that data, and [asking]: ‘How are we speaking to our fans and our audiences in a more creative, personalized and tailored way?’ It’s a lot different from what we were doing even three, four or five years ago, pre-pandemic. At this point, we’re really looking at how we personalize that experience, and also then figuring out the right product fit. With the quantity of products and the vast amount of experiences we can provide, leveraging the data profiles we’ve built over the years with our friends at KAGR into a more modern outreach perspective, based on AI and automation, is something we’re spending a lot of time on.” Tillman adds: “The live-game sports product has never been better. It’s fed this insatiable demand for sports. The big question for all of us is: How do we sustain and keep this momentum going? Especially as we look at the changes we have in our consumer base, and the diversity of fans that require all these unique touch points.” (link)

Marshall welcomes Austin Peay AD Gerald Harrison in the same role with the Thundering Herd. President Brad Smith: “Gerald Harrison embodies the values and vision we hold dear at Marshall University. His track record of championship performance, strategic innovation, and people-first leadership stood out at every step of our national search. What impressed me most was Gerald's unwavering belief that athletics is not just about wins and losses; it's about building a culture of excellence, elevating student-athletes and uniting a community. He understands the power of higher education to transform lives and sees athletics as a platform for opportunity, inspiration, and impact. As we continue advancing our Marshall For All, Marshall Forever strategy, Gerald's approach to leading with integrity, heart and bold vision will take our program and our people even further.” CarrSports Consulting assisted with the search. Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg is reportedly working without a contract, after the expiration of an initial four-year deal at the end of June. According to The Oklahoman’s Scott Wright, despite the cessation, there “has been no interruption in Weiberg’s duties as athletic director, nor is there any concern from either side regarding potential contractual issues going forward.” No specifics for why the contract was allowed to lapse without a new deal in place were provided by the university, while the process for a new pact is in the works with no known timetable for completion. The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman digs into how Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti successfully secured support for the “4-4-2-2-1” College Football Playoff model within the league, noting that during the recently-held media days, the league’s football coaches and ADs appeared to be in lockstep with his vision. Petitti: “They’re in sync with the plan because they helped create it. They were involved in the very first conversations.” Dochterman notes that support began back in 2023 after he held “a really candid conversation” with the league’s football coaches to discuss the fact that they believed a nine-game league schedule hadn’t been rewarded by the CFP Selection Committee comparable to the ACC and SEC. From there, Petitti continued meetings with coaches, ADs and others to create a system “that would reward the Big Ten for its success but would apply fairly throughout the sport. He targeted a guaranteed number of spots for each conference, which then could choose their own participants (allowing for a few at-large berths) rather than leave their fortunes up to the selection committee.” UCLA AD Martin Jarmond: “He started the conversation with data. Looking at our 18, including the West Coast schools that came in: ‘This is where we finish. This is what if this system would have been in place. This is the number for the Big Ten and the SEC.’ And when you see the data, when you see the numbers, it paints a very clear picture that we have earned those opportunities.” (link)
|
More from Jarmond as the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch writes that UCLA appears poised for a breakthrough with positive momentum surrounding its football and men’s basketball programs as well as coming off a league-high 10 championships in 2024-25 between the Big Ten and MPSF. Jarmond: “If you look at our athletic program, there’s an energy and buzz that I feel we haven’t had since I’ve been here, and that’s why I’m most positive now.” With a level of success across the department last year that included a women’s basketball Final Four run, a MCWS berth for baseball, a men’s water polo national title and a national runner-up finish for women’s gymnastics, Jarmond credits university administration for their support of a strong Olympic sports program, especially with the upcoming 2028 LA Summer Olympics. Jarmond: “This is the time to continue to invest in our Olympic sports and make sure that we have the excellence that UCLA is known for, and we’re going to uphold that tradition.” That investment requires revenue and the Bruins plan to avoid imposing any new student fees, focusing instead on fundraising, ticket sales, sponsorship and new creative endeavors, while also partnering with an outside firm to help athletes with content creation to secure NIL deals. The department also plans to hire an Assistant GM to work with each sport to assist with recruiting and the transfer portal, while Jarmond is leaving it up to coaches to decide how to dictate student-athlete rev share payments. DePaul AD DeWayne Peevy joined Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer from the 2025 NACDA Convention to discuss planning and executing a strategy for the House settlement, his messages to coaches, donors and fans and how he’s using this stage as a way to elevate DePaul. Peevy’s message to coaches is: “You’ve got to be adaptable in this. Being stubborn and resistant to change is going to cause failure. So, how do we at DePaul read the tea leaves, stay ahead of it, be aggressive? I’m willing to walk that walk with you. Let’s talk through your strategic plans. We’re rethinking all of them, no matter if it’s a new coach or a coach that’s been there 20 years. I want to know the one-, three- and five-year plans so I can be invested in what we’re thinking so we win and lose together. Take that risk away; don’t feel like your job’s on the line anymore because of something you’re not privy to, not used to, you haven’t been aggressive in the portal. Let’s walk that walk together.” To donors, Peevy is saying: “Don’t help us with operating right now. We’ve got that finally handled over the last four years of growth. But help us with revenue sharing or building our basketball practice facility that’s due to break ground next June. Because everybody doesn’t like bricks and mortar; everybody doesn’t want to rev-share, at least you’ve got something that you can give to. I think they like getting back to the normalcy of it. All right, I get to give to DePaul. Full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders announced Monday, during a press conference alongside University of Colorado Cancer Center Director of Urological Oncology Dr. Janet Kukreja, that he had undergone surgery to remove his bladder after doctors discovered a tumor. Per ESPN’s Jeff Legwold, “Coach Prime” noted that since the procedure, there are no traces of cancer and that he will continue to coach the Buffaloes during the 2025 season. Sanders, who reportedly lost almost 25 pounds throughout the battle, remarked: "It was dynamic. It was tough. It wasn't a cakewalk. It wasn't easy. That was a fight, but we made it." Team trainer Lauren Askevold: “He never folded one time and never wavered. You couldn't ask for a better patient because he wants to get up and get going right. So it's been awesome. It's been a hectic journey, but there's a blessing in disguise with all this." (link)

In the second episode of Inside Virginia Athletics, Cavs Deputy AD of External Operations/Chief Strategy Officer Tyler Jones, who has also taken on the new role of Football/Women’s Basketball GM, discusses several facets of player acquisition and estimates that 90% of the payment figures reported in the media are inaccurate. “We laugh about it because we’re literally, we have those conversations with that particular prospect and their representation, and I call the agent and it’s like, ‘What are you doing?’ I know it’s them – because it helps them. It’s a little bit of an acquisition. There’s a narrative, there’s some branding and marketing behind it. And it’s not published, so there’s no real fact checking. So, why not inflate the numbers? And that helps that agent or that agency acquire new clients. So, I get it, I understand it, but I laugh and chuckle when you get texts and tweets.” Jones also explains the football portal experience in December helped better prepare the Cavaliers for the spring window not just in football, but also in basketball. “The trickle-down effect of what we learned with the beta test with football to some degree, we’ve learned some things, we tweaked our strategy where our basketball and baseball programs were able to benefit from that.” Full interview. + Hunt Companies has secured a controlling interest in Atlanta-headquartered commercial real estate firm Carter with deal details undisclosed. According to SBJ’s Bret McCormick, a key aspect of the agreement was combining Carter’s interest in the college athletics-adjacent real estate market with Hunt Companies’ public-private partnership expertise. Carter is currently developing a 100-acre stretch between Wake Forest’s Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium and Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum called The Grounds, while also having other major projects currently underway or under consideration at Iowa State, Tennessee, Georgia State, George Mason, UNC Asheville and Michigan State.
