UC Riverside AD Wesley Mallette is headed to South Carolina as Deputy AD/CMO after four and a half years leading the Highlanders. Gamecocks AD Jeremiah Donati: “Wes brings a wealth of energy and experience, having touched every aspect of an athletics program. Particularly, his experience in external relations from marketing, branding, content creation, communications and the NIL space will be critical as we continue to embrace a new landscape across college athletics. He will be a great addition to our leadership team, our athletics department, to our university and to the city of Columbia, and we look forward to the positive impact he will have with Gamecock student-athletes.” (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale sits down with North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham in the latest episode of Now It’s Legal to discuss the future of college athletics amid growing legal, economic and structural challenges. Cunningham shares insights on his planned transition from the AD role and the strategic decision to bring in Steve Newmark. Cunningham and Cavale also dive into the evolving economic model in college sports and emphasize the urgent need for enforceable rules, the potential for collective bargaining and the consequences of inaction, including the loss of Olympic sports and further institutional disruption. Cunningham: “What we've learned in the last few years relative to our antitrust situation with the NCAA: the NCAA has been told twice in the last 40 years we're in violation of antitrust, first in '84 and now in 2021, and the only two ways you're not going to be in violation of antitrust is to either collectively bargain or get a federal exemption. I personally don't think the federal exemption is on the way. … So if that doesn't happen, I do think collective bargaining is a very good avenue for us to pursue.” Cunningham goes on to point out that collective bargaining still comes with its own set of complexities: “How do you kind of tease out the differences between students that participate in sports that generate revenue? How does Title IX fit into that equation? How do you get to a position where you can say, ‘This set of students we’re going to treat differently and allow them to collectively bargain because they generate a lot of revenue, but this set of students over here are going to be treated differently. We’re struggling with that as an industry. … So I think the biggest thing we need to find is what is a common space that has legal protection that we can get comfortable with?” (link)

More from Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua, who met with media members yesterday. On whether there’s concern about putting together a competitive schedule if the Big Ten and SEC become less willing to play outside their conferences: “There's a tremendous amount of interest from teams in all of the Power 4 conferences and beyond to play better. I think you saw two recent examples of that. The series we announced with Clemson. The conversations I had with [Clemson AD] Graham Neff over the course of the last few months to get that going, to put that together, we think that could be one of the great rivalries over the course of the next couple of decades. I think the Texas example is another great one. I had a meeting with [Texas AD] Chris Del Conte. I flew down to Texas to meet with him after talking on the phone a couple of times and it took us an hour to put that together.” More. (link)

Elevate College & Global Marketplace Chief Business Officer Jonathan Marks joins the Sports Business Conversations Podcast to discuss several topics, including the company’s recently announced College Investment Initiative. Marks explains the fund is structured as private credit rather than equity and stresses that the goal is to leave schools in stronger positions a decade later: “At 10 years, Elevate owns nothing. XYZ School owns everything. And hopefully they’re in a better situation than they were 10 years before.” Schools typically use the money for facilities, premium seating, or mixed-use real estate development, and Marks notes that Elevate positions itself differently from other capital groups: “Other groups have announced…we’re going to invest in college athletics. They don’t have an operating partner behind what they’re doing. … Where Elevate ideally can come in, we can provide capital but we can also help you operate and maximize the return on that investment.” Not all schools will fit with Elevate’s offerings, and Marks explains that “if they’re not looking for capital that will put them in a better position…it’s probably not something that we want to help them with.” While the fund has already been deployed, Elevate has not named specific schools, but Marks says: “Yes, we’ve had some success and we’ll continue to. … I do believe we’ll be able to announce some, if not all of those partners here in the future.” Lots more. The Denton Record-Chronicle’s Brett Vito: “A conference spokesman confirmed the change to the Denton Record-Chronicle on Wednesday afternoon. The league has yet to make a formal announcement of the switch as it works to adjust dates and times for games for television.” (link)

Central Michigan in a statement says it is “aware that the NCAA has updated its online infractions dashboard for parties contesting their allegations” in regards to the investigation into former Michigan football staffer Connor Stalions’ alleged presence on the Chippewas’ sidelines. “CMU has not received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA because it is working with the NCAA toward a negotiated resolution. We have been working collaboratively with the NCAA since Fall 2023, and we look forward to bringing our matter to a fair conclusion soon." (link)

Arizona State Football HC Kenny Dillingham says ASU is looking to raise $15M over the next five months for a permanent indoor practice facility that can be used on game days as a premier tailgating venue. Dillingham notes the Sun Devils are one-third of the way funded to start the project and adds: “We want to create the 16th hole of the Waste Management Open – or as close as we can to it – in our indoor facility by our stadium." Dillingham believes the facility could be completed in two years. (link, link)

EA Sports CEO Andrew Wilson on the company’s recent earnings call commented on the enthusiasm behind launching a new college basketball game: “We can’t say too much about it yet, but if I think about the opportunity, going back to where we are on College Football, college sport has one of the most vibrant fanbase in the world. And that trickles over to basketball certainly. We’re seeing momentum of fandom in college basketball also continue to grow. Fans, athletes, universities pour their passion into these sports. And it is that passion that makes it special, that makes the games different. … We feel like we deliver that incredibly well with College Football. We’d love to do the same for basketball. All 350 programs, men’s and women’s teams, the iconic traditions and rivalries, and of course, March Madness. So for us, college sports broadly is an exciting opportunity. We feel like we’ve done a really strong job, and remain committed to doing that in the context of college football. We believe that with what we’ve done with the teams, the technology, and our commitment around College Football, we’d have a great ability to do the same for college basketball, and as we look to try and activate against that opportunity, we’ll be able to share more.” (link)

The World Athletics Council has approved new regulations concerning eligibility conditions to compete in the female category for world ranking competitions. Effective September 1, all athletes wishing to compete in the female category at the World Championships are required to undergo a “once-in-a-lifetime test for the SRY gene – a reliable proxy for determining biological sex. This is to be conducted via a cheek swab or blood test, whichever is more convenient.” World Athletics President Sebastian Coe: “The philosophy that we hold dear in World Athletics is the protection and the promotion of the integrity of women's sport. It is really important in a sport that is permanently trying to attract more women that they enter a sport believing there is no biological glass ceiling. The test to confirm biological sex is a very important step in ensuring this is the case. We are saying, at elite level, for you to compete in the female category, you have to be biologically female. It was always very clear to me and the World Athletics Council that gender cannot trump biology.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “quietly last week, the NCAA DI governance working group *unanimously* voted to recommend the new governance model to DI Board of Directors. The vote was unanimous despite the 18-person group featuring a wide variety of reps – from an SEC president to an FCS AD to a G6 commissioner. The DI Board meets August 5 and the expectation is that it will approve the governance model after the unanimous recommendation.” (link); More from Dellenger: “Perhaps more interesting on the agenda of DI Board next week: The introduction of a proposal to reward teams advancing to semifinals & finals of NCAA basketball tournaments with revenue units, sources tell @YahooSports. Under current structure, unit distribution stops at semis. How these additional units for the semifinals and finals are to be funded remains unclear and is likely to begin a lengthy vetting process. But there is a desire from many athletic administrators to begin rewarding teams that advance furthest in the tournaments.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips “doesn’t have an existential crisis crashing down on his conference” for the first time in his five years at the helm, according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, and Phillips notes: “There was a lot about demise, that the ACC could be really unraveling, all of those types of narratives. It’s just not true. It just wasn’t true, and it’s not true. It’s as healthy of a position as we’ve been in my nearly five years in this role.” Asked whether ESPN treats the league as a “secondary” partner compared to the SEC, Phillips remarked last week that “one of the things we have to do is we’ve got to perform better, too. We can’t go 2-11 in postseason bowl games [like] last year. We had 13 [teams make the postseason], which was incredible, and then we played poorly. We have to do our part.” Also from Phillips: “I’m looking forward to the future, excited about the season and thrilled this summer we’re getting a chance to talk more about the student athletes and teams and coaches and players [more] than we are our lawsuit or the NCAA lawsuit or some of the other things that have distracted everybody from the most important part of college athletics – and that’s the student athletes.” (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua met with media members yesterday and remarked that Notre Dame is open to an occasional neutral site game in the USC series. Bevacqua also reaffirmed that the Fighting Irish are willing to move the game's date around in the calendar to accommodate USC. Asked how he balances the rev-share era with preserving the game fans have fallen in love with, Bevacqua explains that “my biggest concern from your question, in terms of what makes college sports special and could that change, I think primarily around college football. College football is a big business, right? When you think about 80K+ spectators in our stadium, when you think about our relationship with NBC, when you think about the college football playoffs. But yet, it's been able to maintain all those elements that make it special. I think you read and you hear and we've been approached with these concepts, largely circulated by private equity firms about the creations of super leagues. I view that as almost the formation of a version of an NFL paradigm. To me, that would spell the end of what makes college football special. If college football tries to imitate or replicate the NFL, it's going to fail. It’s going to end up looking more like a minor league sport, a somewhat bastardized version of the NFL than the NFL and we're going to lose everything that makes college football special.” Bevacqua also advocated for the 5+11 College Football Playoff model, adding: “I happen to think that there should be automatic qualifiers for the Power 4 conference champions and there should be an automatic qualifier for the highest rated G5 champion. But then, whether it's 12, 14 or 16, I think you have to earn it on the field and those should be at-large berths.” (link, link)

Tulsa World’s Bill Haisten is told by a source that Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg is secure in his position and eventually will be given a new contract. Haisten adds: “My lifetime success rate with this particular source is 100%, so my editors can feel confident that the information is good. The explanation, essentially, is that there’s a new president (Jim Hess) at Oklahoma State, and there’s a lot going on, and the Weiberg contract simply hasn’t been addressed. … It is not known whether Weiberg gets a new deal in a few days, a few weeks or a few months, and it is not known whether his compensation will remain where it’s been – at an annual sum of $750K. But within the Oklahoma State athletic department, there does seem to be the expectation that Weiberg will continue to oversee daily operations and the day-to-day challenges of a dynamic that didn’t exist until recently: direct revenue sharing with athletes.” Haisten also points out that the abrupt resignation of former OSU President Kayse Shrum and the announced retirement of Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione are part of the reason there was “speculative chatter when Weiberg reached the finish line on his contract, and there wasn’t a fresh contract ready to be signed.” (link)

Wyoming will approach revenue distribution as follows, per WyoSports’ Alex Taylor: $2.8M in total, including $1.5M in direct NIL agreements, $1M in Alston awards and $300K in eight new women's scholarships. Cowboys AD Tom Burman: "The guidelines in general are based upon the revenues earned by the programs. If you look at the University of Wyoming, depending how you define it, football does anywhere between 65-80% of our total revenue. It's probably closer to the high end, so the majority of money goes to football. We have five sports we are going to sign licensing agreements with: football, men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball and wrestling. … If we had a student-athlete who was magical and enhances this brand – say we had a golfer who's great – we would look at signing an NIL agreement with them. Especially if they were an underclassman.” (link)

Wisconsin Volleyball HC Kelly Sheffield would like to see the sport take an approach similar to basketball and allow teams to conduct limited practices and other organized activities during the summer. “I think it handcuffs our sport that we’re not able to have access to our players in the summer like other sports do. … Our program can’t even post anything about them working out. These guys are in the gym or in the weight room working out.” Sheffield adds: “You see other sports that are able to post that and promote their sports, and the impact that that has on NIL. We haven’t gotten to the part in our sport where we’re able to be out there 365. We have these quiet periods – the opening of our tournament where we’re not nationally broadcast – and we’ve got times in the summer where other sports are able to have access with their players and promote their teams and their players. We can’t do that.” Sheffield also weighs in on eligibility rules, which he sees as a Title IX issue: “You see all these lawsuits that are happening. The lawsuit that I think would be the most winnable from a Title IX standpoint is how are football players able to have basically a third of their season where they’re able to play and then still redshirt. Where if our players play one match, they’ve lost their year. How is that allowed from a Title IX perspective that you’ve got over 100 male athletes that are being able to get not only that head start, but also being able to build a brand with NIL? Now that you’ve got money in there, that seems to be the most winnable lawsuit there is.” (link)

Disney closed its 2025-26 upfronts with sports making up nearly $4B in commitments, according to SBJ’s Mollie Cahillane, who notes streaming volume accounted for more than 40% of total upfront volume and adds: “Disney now has 69 multiyear deals, and saw double-digit growth in volume for Monday Night Football and college football. Women’s sports are up double-digits percentage wise, driven by the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, the WNBA and emerging sports such as softball and volleyball. Ahead of the new 11-year media rights deal with the NBA, Disney said it had high single-digit volume growth, mostly from Inside the NBA and the NBA Finals. The strongest categories were financial services, CPG, pharma and beverages. (link)

More from the recent SBJ Ticketing Roundtable as Kraft Analytics Group CEO Jessica Gelman remarks that the “biggest asset outside of real estate that teams are going to be able to monetize, increasingly on an international basis, is their customer base. It’s incumbent upon all of us to capture as much data as we possibly can on that customer and own it. I’m talking about the ‘war’ for data, and who owns it, and what is the right way to share it. Once they convert to us, how do you personalize it? The biggest evolution on ticketing is this movement away from a demographic-based approach to who the fan is. The sports industry is so far behind in how we’re selling and engaging; we have to be evolving to the stage of life that those people are in.” Eventellect Co-Founder Patrick Ryan notes that [a big area of opportunity is] marketing to the customer while they’re in your building. I’ve been to almost every professional sports venue. I always buy high-end seats. It shocks me that I’ll buy a $1,000 club seat, and my next correspondence from the team is a weedeater ad from Scott’s because I just go into their generic marketing funnel. But when they’re in your building, they’re so captive. You can wine and dine them, surprise and delight them. Then you say, ‘Hey, this product is available as a mini plan.’” Lots more. (link)
