Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “quietly last week, the NCAA DI governance working group *unanimously* voted to recommend the new governance model to DI Board of Directors. The vote was unanimous despite the 18-person group featuring a wide variety of reps – from an SEC president to an FCS AD to a G6 commissioner. The DI Board meets August 5 and the expectation is that it will approve the governance model after the unanimous recommendation.” (link); More from Dellenger: “Perhaps more interesting on the agenda of DI Board next week: The introduction of a proposal to reward teams advancing to semifinals & finals of NCAA basketball tournaments with revenue units, sources tell @YahooSports. Under current structure, unit distribution stops at semis. How these additional units for the semifinals and finals are to be funded remains unclear and is likely to begin a lengthy vetting process. But there is a desire from many athletic administrators to begin rewarding teams that advance furthest in the tournaments.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips “doesn’t have an existential crisis crashing down on his conference” for the first time in his five years at the helm, according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, and Phillips notes: “There was a lot about demise, that the ACC could be really unraveling, all of those types of narratives. It’s just not true. It just wasn’t true, and it’s not true. It’s as healthy of a position as we’ve been in my nearly five years in this role.” Asked whether ESPN treats the league as a “secondary” partner compared to the SEC, Phillips remarked last week that “one of the things we have to do is we’ve got to perform better, too. We can’t go 2-11 in postseason bowl games [like] last year. We had 13 [teams make the postseason], which was incredible, and then we played poorly. We have to do our part.” Also from Phillips: “I’m looking forward to the future, excited about the season and thrilled this summer we’re getting a chance to talk more about the student athletes and teams and coaches and players [more] than we are our lawsuit or the NCAA lawsuit or some of the other things that have distracted everybody from the most important part of college athletics – and that’s the student athletes.” (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua met with media members yesterday and remarked that Notre Dame is open to an occasional neutral site game in the USC series. Bevacqua also reaffirmed that the Fighting Irish are willing to move the game's date around in the calendar to accommodate USC. Asked how he balances the rev-share era with preserving the game fans have fallen in love with, Bevacqua explains that “my biggest concern from your question, in terms of what makes college sports special and could that change, I think primarily around college football. College football is a big business, right? When you think about 80K+ spectators in our stadium, when you think about our relationship with NBC, when you think about the college football playoffs. But yet, it's been able to maintain all those elements that make it special. I think you read and you hear and we've been approached with these concepts, largely circulated by private equity firms about the creations of super leagues. I view that as almost the formation of a version of an NFL paradigm. To me, that would spell the end of what makes college football special. If college football tries to imitate or replicate the NFL, it's going to fail. It’s going to end up looking more like a minor league sport, a somewhat bastardized version of the NFL than the NFL and we're going to lose everything that makes college football special.” Bevacqua also advocated for the 5+11 College Football Playoff model, adding: “I happen to think that there should be automatic qualifiers for the Power 4 conference champions and there should be an automatic qualifier for the highest rated G5 champion. But then, whether it's 12, 14 or 16, I think you have to earn it on the field and those should be at-large berths.” (link, link)

Tulsa World’s Bill Haisten is told by a source that Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg is secure in his position and eventually will be given a new contract. Haisten adds: “My lifetime success rate with this particular source is 100%, so my editors can feel confident that the information is good. The explanation, essentially, is that there’s a new president (Jim Hess) at Oklahoma State, and there’s a lot going on, and the Weiberg contract simply hasn’t been addressed. … It is not known whether Weiberg gets a new deal in a few days, a few weeks or a few months, and it is not known whether his compensation will remain where it’s been – at an annual sum of $750K. But within the Oklahoma State athletic department, there does seem to be the expectation that Weiberg will continue to oversee daily operations and the day-to-day challenges of a dynamic that didn’t exist until recently: direct revenue sharing with athletes.” Haisten also points out that the abrupt resignation of former OSU President Kayse Shrum and the announced retirement of Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione are part of the reason there was “speculative chatter when Weiberg reached the finish line on his contract, and there wasn’t a fresh contract ready to be signed.” (link)

Wyoming will approach revenue distribution as follows, per WyoSports’ Alex Taylor: $2.8M in total, including $1.5M in direct NIL agreements, $1M in Alston awards and $300K in eight new women's scholarships. Cowboys AD Tom Burman: "The guidelines in general are based upon the revenues earned by the programs. If you look at the University of Wyoming, depending how you define it, football does anywhere between 65-80% of our total revenue. It's probably closer to the high end, so the majority of money goes to football. We have five sports we are going to sign licensing agreements with: football, men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball and wrestling. … If we had a student-athlete who was magical and enhances this brand – say we had a golfer who's great – we would look at signing an NIL agreement with them. Especially if they were an underclassman.” (link)

Wisconsin Volleyball HC Kelly Sheffield would like to see the sport take an approach similar to basketball and allow teams to conduct limited practices and other organized activities during the summer. “I think it handcuffs our sport that we’re not able to have access to our players in the summer like other sports do. … Our program can’t even post anything about them working out. These guys are in the gym or in the weight room working out.” Sheffield adds: “You see other sports that are able to post that and promote their sports, and the impact that that has on NIL. We haven’t gotten to the part in our sport where we’re able to be out there 365. We have these quiet periods – the opening of our tournament where we’re not nationally broadcast – and we’ve got times in the summer where other sports are able to have access with their players and promote their teams and their players. We can’t do that.” Sheffield also weighs in on eligibility rules, which he sees as a Title IX issue: “You see all these lawsuits that are happening. The lawsuit that I think would be the most winnable from a Title IX standpoint is how are football players able to have basically a third of their season where they’re able to play and then still redshirt. Where if our players play one match, they’ve lost their year. How is that allowed from a Title IX perspective that you’ve got over 100 male athletes that are being able to get not only that head start, but also being able to build a brand with NIL? Now that you’ve got money in there, that seems to be the most winnable lawsuit there is.” (link)

Disney closed its 2025-26 upfronts with sports making up nearly $4B in commitments, according to SBJ’s Mollie Cahillane, who notes streaming volume accounted for more than 40% of total upfront volume and adds: “Disney now has 69 multiyear deals, and saw double-digit growth in volume for Monday Night Football and college football. Women’s sports are up double-digits percentage wise, driven by the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, the WNBA and emerging sports such as softball and volleyball. Ahead of the new 11-year media rights deal with the NBA, Disney said it had high single-digit volume growth, mostly from Inside the NBA and the NBA Finals. The strongest categories were financial services, CPG, pharma and beverages. (link)

More from the recent SBJ Ticketing Roundtable as Kraft Analytics Group CEO Jessica Gelman remarks that the “biggest asset outside of real estate that teams are going to be able to monetize, increasingly on an international basis, is their customer base. It’s incumbent upon all of us to capture as much data as we possibly can on that customer and own it. I’m talking about the ‘war’ for data, and who owns it, and what is the right way to share it. Once they convert to us, how do you personalize it? The biggest evolution on ticketing is this movement away from a demographic-based approach to who the fan is. The sports industry is so far behind in how we’re selling and engaging; we have to be evolving to the stage of life that those people are in.” Eventellect Co-Founder Patrick Ryan notes that [a big area of opportunity is] marketing to the customer while they’re in your building. I’ve been to almost every professional sports venue. I always buy high-end seats. It shocks me that I’ll buy a $1,000 club seat, and my next correspondence from the team is a weedeater ad from Scott’s because I just go into their generic marketing funnel. But when they’re in your building, they’re so captive. You can wine and dine them, surprise and delight them. Then you say, ‘Hey, this product is available as a mini plan.’” Lots more. (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports that one “appeal of the ruling to approve the settlement of the House-NCAA cases has been voluntarily dismissed. The Rutgers Board of Governors is set to approve a five-year contract for LSU Executive Deputy AD/COO Keli Zinn on Wednesday to become the highest-paid AD in school history, per NJ Advance Media’s Steve Politi and Brian Fonseca. While it’s unclear what the incentive structure will be or if there is a buyout clause or any retention bonuses included as part of the deal, Zinn is set to make a base salary of $1.35M, which can be boosted through the athletic department achieving any of multiple included incentives. According to Politi and Fonseca, that base total “lags behind a majority of her Big Ten colleagues, particularly those who joined the league during this offseason,” including Maryland’s Jim Smith ($1.5M) and Michigan State’s J Batt ($1.85M). College Football Playoff Executive Director Rich Clark tells ESPN West Palm’s Theo Dorsey there are pros and cons to expanding the CFP. “Twelve works great and there’s no question that could be good, but 16 gives us more access. You get more teams in, and you never know when you get that team that strikes lightning in a bottle and they get that 16th seed, you never know. We love an underdog. We love somebody that comes in from the outside and makes it big. Fourteen might be the happy medium, so it’s hard to know. The commissioners are going through that right now though, and we’re having some pretty intense discussions about it, but they’re working through it and working together on it. Now, the other part I’ve got to bring up, there’s the automatic-qualifier format or the ranked-seeding format. Both of those have pros and cons. There’s a certainty when you have the automatic qualifiers. You know how many teams from a given conference are going to get in…but the straight ranking versus ranking-to-seeding, that gives you, I think, a little bit less certainty. But it rewards performance throughout the season rather than predetermining it before the season. You’re rewarding people during the season, and in the end, you get the best teams in. Both have merits.” Dorsey asks whether CFP leaders have discussed ranking the conferences each season, and Clark confirms it has been considered, “but there’s some drawbacks to that too. And one of the big ones is how do you rank the conferences? Do you rank them based on previous year’s performance? Do you rank them based on an accumulation of what they’ve done? How do you bake all that in? So when we talked about that, we got so wrapped around the axle on how do you actually rank the conferences that I think people kind of moved away from that.” Clark also comments on the access the CFP provides to service academies and notes that, as a former Air Force student-athlete, “even if we had played one round, that would’ve been historic. And you’ve got hope. You have a chance to go all the way. That’s what people want. America loves an underdog.” (link)

North Texas is reportedly less than $1M from reaching its $12M fundraising goal in an effort to expand its athletic center, according to the Denton Record-Chronicle’s Brett Vito. UNT has targeted the fall for achieving its objective ahead of going to its Board of Regents in November for approval of the project. AD Jared Mosley: “We still have a number of asks out there. The likelihood of us being able to get to the finish line is really, really good.” UNT is hoping to break ground on the project in spring 2025 with expansion set to occur in two phases. Per Vito, Mosley has mentioned that he would like to see baseball return to campus and that the first phase of athletic center expansion would be a “key step” toward that goal. Mosley: “We don’t have sufficient facilities in sports medicine, strength and conditioning or academic support. I have shared with the baseball group, both phase one and phase two are critical. We’ve got to have the infrastructure if we’re going to add programs. That’s important to keep in mind when you look at the significance of getting this project to the finish line. … We’ve had a handful of donors toward the AC expansion project that our first time to engage them was less than 24 months ago. We’re having seven-figure givers who are moving in with their first commitment to North Texas athletics.” According to Vito, the speed of phase one expansion fundraising has the school hoping it can soon move on to raising money for phase two. Omaha AD Adrian Dowell tells KETV’s Matt Sottile that strategic plans used to look upwards of 10 years into the future, but “that’s impossible in this landscape and the reality is even up to last week, especially with the impacts of the settlement, things are changing in real time. So, you have to have a plan, and yes, this is a three-year plan (to initially opt out of the House settlement while monitoring the landscape), but more importantly you have to be willing to pivot once more information becomes available to you and adjust quickly. The end goal – certainly we are educating our student-athletes and putting them in position to compete for championships, which they've been really successful at, but the way we get there is certainly having a strategy in place, staying up to date on what’s going on in the landscape and being ready and willing to pivot when necessary.” Dowell goes on to note that a “lot of the dust still needs to settle” with the settlement. “Even as of last week, rules surrounding NIL and translations, these are changing in real time, and these things will potentially impact our decision to opt in. And like I said, it’s not if, it’s just when. But more importantly, when we do, we want this integration to be efficient. But make no mistake about it, we’re going to do whatever we need to do to position these coaches and these student-athletes to be competitively successful resource-wise.” Full interview. (link)

Central Michigan has received a Notice of Allegations (NOA) from the NCAA as part of the Michigan/Connor Stalions sign-stealing investigation, according to the Detroit Free Press’ Tony Garcia. This development comes after Stalions was allegedly able to sneak onto the CMU sidelines in disguise for the Chippewas season-opening road match-up against Michigan State at Spartan Stadium back in August 2023. According to the NCAA’s Division I Infractions Dashboard, Central Michigan was served the NOA back on June 27, meaning the school has 90 days from that date to provide a formal response, which would be on or before Sept. 25. Per Garcia, a Tuesday e-mail requesting comment on the NOA was not immediately returned. (link)
