In her introductory press conference, freshly minted Rutgers AD Keli Zinn set the tone by remarking: “My vision for Rutgers athletics is quite simple. We didn’t come here to just compete. We came here to win – to win conference and national championships. … Today is a new day for Rutgers University. I’m thrilled to be here, and we’re going to focus on the days ahead, not look back.” Zinn went on to say the chance to build an “incredible team” is part of what attracted her to the role. “I’m seeking elite talent. There are a few positions open, and so you’ll see me go and seek the best from people who have the same approach and drive for the highest level of success: those who are optimistic, those who can motivate and empower others, and those who have made the world of college sports one of their deepest passions.” Zinn calls the school’s location between the New York and Philadelphia markets a “major asset,” and says: “What you’re going to see is the importance of both being able to elevate things in the commercial and corporate space relative to third party name, image and likeness — it’s absolutely a necessity and critical for our success — and to do so in a way where the traditional fundraising side of things and the ability to raise capital and support the university capital projects can both thrive together. There’s a balance to that, but I think it starts with people working really well together to identify what the goals and expectations are to do so." More from the presser. (link)

Zinn, whose contract runs through 2030, will make an initial base salary of $1.35M that can increase annually if the athletic department hits any of the multiple incentives in the deal, according to NJ.com’s Steve Politi and Brian Fonseca, who also report Zinn will receive a $50K raise “for each year she receives a positive evaluation,” a retention bonus of $150K following the second and fourth year of her five-year deal and a number of potential performance bonuses “upon achievements of numerated benchmarks in football, basketball, championship-level play, academics and revenue generation.” (link)

Marshall officially introduced newly appointed AD Gerald Harrison, who noted in his remarks that “it takes everyone working together to make history. We are on an unwavering pursuit to build not just a top tier athletics department, but the most complete one in the country.” Harrison also made it clear he supports the holistic development of student-athletes: “You want to win games, yes. You want to win championships, yes, but academically you’ve got to be outstanding. You’ve got to build for tomorrow, not just today. They’ve got to leave here better for coming to this community, better for being a part of this university and we can do that. That’s what we’re trying to do.” In a message to fans, Harrison remarked: “I feel strongly that we can’t just ask you guys to support us. We must show up for Huntington as well. We must earn the support that you provide. … The Herd mentality will honor the journey. We will engage folks with purpose. We will rise through innovation and dedicate everything we do to others. Together we won’t just do something special. We’ll do something extraordinary.” (link)

CollegeAD shares the particulars of Ole Miss AD Keith Carter’s contract extension, which runs through June 29, 2029, but is set to roll over each July 1, keeping a four-year term intact. Carter is set to earn an annual base salary of $1,274,501 and will receive $225,499 each year in supplemental compensation through the Ole Miss Athletic Foundation. Carter can also receive bonus compensation, including $25K for a top-30 finish in the Learfield Directors' Cup and $50K for a top-25 finish. Also: “If Carter is still employed with Ole Miss by 2027, he will receive a one-time retention bonus of $400K. Both parties have the ability to cancel the contract at any time without cause. Should Ole Miss do so, they will owe Carter all remaining base salary and any accrued supplemental compensation. Should Carter terminate his contract, Ole Miss will be left to end the contract and cease any and all payments to him. He will not pay any liquidated damages.” Under terms of his previous agreement, Carter was earning $1.1M annually. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde observes the transfer portal phenomenon thus far created what he calls the Migration Generation and notes that “from 2019–20 through ’23–24, when NCAA transfer limitations were struck down by the courts, Division I portal entrants nearly doubled, from 13,689 to 24,399. Football portal entries rose 138% in that span, while women’s basketball increased 132% and men’s hoops elevated 111%. Final figures are not in for ’24–25, but the expectation is for another significant year-over-year increase in DI transfers.” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey weighs in: “I think the issue that we miss is the number of young people lost to the system because of the transfer freedom. We can all report stories of, ‘Wow, wasn’t it great that somebody went from Point A to Point B and it worked?’ But there’s attrition, and there’s academic attrition—lost credits that our young people talk to us about.” Michigan State Men’s Basketball HC Tom Izzo voices concern about the friendships players could be missing out on by transferring so frequently: “Sooner or later in life, you’re going to need your buddies. … I am worried about mental health. I’m worried about what these [transferring] players are going to do in a year or two. If I’m wrong, that’s a good thing. But if I’m right, that’s sad.” Lots more. (link)

Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill says the league is open to adding two more schools. “If we can find schools that have good brands and good fan bases that are interested in us, that would help us continue to do what we do better, then I think we would be open to that. I suspect those schools are out there. Fourteen is a really good number for us, for scheduling and other factors. But we’re not going to miss out on an opportunity, if it presents itself, just because we’re trying to be at a certain number." (link)

Southern Conference Commissioner Michael Cross believes his league isn’t getting enough respect from the FCS Selection Committee or national polls and asserts: “We’ve consistently had teams ranked in the top 10 and advance to at least the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs each year. The SoCon has seen six different champions in the past six years – a feat no other FCS conference has done. Despite that, we’re fighting an uphill battle with the NCAA selection committee and national poll voters. Sometimes it appears that the data being used is like how a drunk uses a lamp post – for support instead of illumination. The anecdotal evidence of these concerns is ample, and it didn’t take long for us to confirm what has happened to the Southern Conference over the past three seasons.” Over the past three years, the SoCon has received six bids, but only three have been at-large, and Cross contends there is a “reliance on outdated perceptions on conference strengths that have not accounted for significant membership changes across the country. Consistently overweighing mid-tier teams in those conferences based on outdated perceptions of conference brand. They are ignoring conference scheduling practices where top teams usually avoid playing each other to manufacture perceptions of quality.” (link)

More on Arizona State’s plans for a new indoor football practice facility from Sun Devils AD Graham Rossini, who says: “Coach [Kenny Dillingham] and I have identified the football facility as a really key priority for us. We're hard at work fundraising. We’ve gotten some significant gifts in over the last couple weeks that get us well on our way, and we want to continue to accelerate and fast-track that process. It’s really another tool that allows to recruit, coach and develop players at an elite level.” (link)
|
Rossini also comments on how ASU’s on-field success is translating to more fundraising success: “Our fanbase is starting to really feel the momentum that we're building. There’s confidence in the athletic department. We've got, in our opinion, the best football coach in America leading this program. His energy is captivating. Our fan base has responded so well to our football program. … It puts us in new conversations with new people and new supporters. It gets a lot of the longtime boosters and supporters back in the conversation. And everybody wants to help. That’s been so refreshing to find out.” (link)

Former Stanford Football HC Troy Taylor has filed a defamation lawsuit against ESPN and reporter Xuan Thai over a March story that led to Taylor’s dismissal. According to the complaint, ESPN and Thai published “repeated defamatory statements about Taylor, knowing full well that the statements were false, for the purpose of smearing Taylor’s reputation and injuring him in his profession.” Specifically, the story alleged Taylor “bullied and belittled female athletic staffers,” citing a pair of previously undisclosed third-party investigations in 2023 and 2024 after “multiple employees filed official complaints regarding Taylor’s behavior.” Taylor’s complaint alleges a follow-up story ESPN published a month later indicated Stanford’s initial investigation began “in response to a single complainant who alleged gender bias and ‘a culture problem in football,’” and that the investigator found “insufficient evidence” regarding the original complaint. The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel adds: “The actual April 16 article contained that language but also noted the investigation ultimately included interviews ‘with at least 20 Stanford athletic department staffers regarding four allegations against Taylor. Three of the allegations regarding belittling and inappropriate behavior toward multiple women were deemed to have merit.’” (link)

Starnes Davis Florie attorney Jay Ezelle reports there have been “vast improvements in the operations of NIL Go this week. There were some bumps in the road during the initial rollout – which expectedly led to a chorus of complaints and proclamations that the system will never work – but it seems like the [College Sports Commission] is working through the issues expeditiously. For a system that is still being created and installed, it is actually remarkable how much progress they have made. I am also pleased to report that all of the deals that we are involved with have been approved without any adjustment to the compensation. These deals included many six-figure agreements, including agreements with what some used to call collectives, but which have been fully transitioned to fan engagement sites (i.e., a valid business purpose). … I know many folks have an agenda to criticize the new model, but I am seeing real evidence of it working and getting better. That is good news for college athletes, colleges, and fans.” (link)

D1.relocation COO Ernest Firth III highlights the often-underestimated financial realities of relocating for new roles in college athletics. Many coaches and administrators are surprised by high moving costs, which can far exceed initial budgets or relocation packages. Factors contributing to these expenses include increased demand and operational costs in the moving industry, extra charges for packing and specialty items, significant cost differences between full-service and self-service moves, and hidden costs such as temporary living, travel, and real estate fees. For athletic departments, providing comprehensive relocation services is crucial for allowing their hires to quickly focus on their roles rather than the anxiety of a move. D1.relocation aims to simplify transitions by offering concierge services that coordinate logistics under a single point of contact, serving as an advocate to alleviating stress for individuals and departments. UC Riverside AD Wesley Mallette is headed to South Carolina as Deputy AD/CMO after four and a half years leading the Highlanders. Gamecocks AD Jeremiah Donati: “Wes brings a wealth of energy and experience, having touched every aspect of an athletics program. Particularly, his experience in external relations from marketing, branding, content creation, communications and the NIL space will be critical as we continue to embrace a new landscape across college athletics. He will be a great addition to our leadership team, our athletics department, to our university and to the city of Columbia, and we look forward to the positive impact he will have with Gamecock student-athletes.” (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale sits down with North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham in the latest episode of Now It’s Legal to discuss the future of college athletics amid growing legal, economic and structural challenges. Cunningham shares insights on his planned transition from the AD role and the strategic decision to bring in Steve Newmark. Cunningham and Cavale also dive into the evolving economic model in college sports and emphasize the urgent need for enforceable rules, the potential for collective bargaining and the consequences of inaction, including the loss of Olympic sports and further institutional disruption. Cunningham: “What we've learned in the last few years relative to our antitrust situation with the NCAA: the NCAA has been told twice in the last 40 years we're in violation of antitrust, first in '84 and now in 2021, and the only two ways you're not going to be in violation of antitrust is to either collectively bargain or get a federal exemption. I personally don't think the federal exemption is on the way. … So if that doesn't happen, I do think collective bargaining is a very good avenue for us to pursue.” Cunningham goes on to point out that collective bargaining still comes with its own set of complexities: “How do you kind of tease out the differences between students that participate in sports that generate revenue? How does Title IX fit into that equation? How do you get to a position where you can say, ‘This set of students we’re going to treat differently and allow them to collectively bargain because they generate a lot of revenue, but this set of students over here are going to be treated differently. We’re struggling with that as an industry. … So I think the biggest thing we need to find is what is a common space that has legal protection that we can get comfortable with?” (link)

More from Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua, who met with media members yesterday. On whether there’s concern about putting together a competitive schedule if the Big Ten and SEC become less willing to play outside their conferences: “There's a tremendous amount of interest from teams in all of the Power 4 conferences and beyond to play better. I think you saw two recent examples of that. The series we announced with Clemson. The conversations I had with [Clemson AD] Graham Neff over the course of the last few months to get that going, to put that together, we think that could be one of the great rivalries over the course of the next couple of decades. I think the Texas example is another great one. I had a meeting with [Texas AD] Chris Del Conte. I flew down to Texas to meet with him after talking on the phone a couple of times and it took us an hour to put that together.” More. (link)

Elevate College & Global Marketplace Chief Business Officer Jonathan Marks joins the Sports Business Conversations Podcast to discuss several topics, including the company’s recently announced College Investment Initiative. Marks explains the fund is structured as private credit rather than equity and stresses that the goal is to leave schools in stronger positions a decade later: “At 10 years, Elevate owns nothing. XYZ School owns everything. And hopefully they’re in a better situation than they were 10 years before.” Schools typically use the money for facilities, premium seating, or mixed-use real estate development, and Marks notes that Elevate positions itself differently from other capital groups: “Other groups have announced…we’re going to invest in college athletics. They don’t have an operating partner behind what they’re doing. … Where Elevate ideally can come in, we can provide capital but we can also help you operate and maximize the return on that investment.” Not all schools will fit with Elevate’s offerings, and Marks explains that “if they’re not looking for capital that will put them in a better position…it’s probably not something that we want to help them with.” While the fund has already been deployed, Elevate has not named specific schools, but Marks says: “Yes, we’ve had some success and we’ll continue to. … I do believe we’ll be able to announce some, if not all of those partners here in the future.” Lots more. Central Michigan in a statement says it is “aware that the NCAA has updated its online infractions dashboard for parties contesting their allegations” in regards to the investigation into former Michigan football staffer Connor Stalions’ alleged presence on the Chippewas’ sidelines. “CMU has not received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA because it is working with the NCAA toward a negotiated resolution. We have been working collaboratively with the NCAA since Fall 2023, and we look forward to bringing our matter to a fair conclusion soon." (link)

Arizona State Football HC Kenny Dillingham says ASU is looking to raise $15M over the next five months for a permanent indoor practice facility that can be used on game days as a premier tailgating venue. Dillingham notes the Sun Devils are one-third of the way funded to start the project and adds: “We want to create the 16th hole of the Waste Management Open – or as close as we can to it – in our indoor facility by our stadium." Dillingham believes the facility could be completed in two years. (link, link)

EA Sports CEO Andrew Wilson on the company’s recent earnings call commented on the enthusiasm behind launching a new college basketball game: “We can’t say too much about it yet, but if I think about the opportunity, going back to where we are on College Football, college sport has one of the most vibrant fanbase in the world. And that trickles over to basketball certainly. We’re seeing momentum of fandom in college basketball also continue to grow. Fans, athletes, universities pour their passion into these sports. And it is that passion that makes it special, that makes the games different. … We feel like we deliver that incredibly well with College Football. We’d love to do the same for basketball. All 350 programs, men’s and women’s teams, the iconic traditions and rivalries, and of course, March Madness. So for us, college sports broadly is an exciting opportunity. We feel like we’ve done a really strong job, and remain committed to doing that in the context of college football. We believe that with what we’ve done with the teams, the technology, and our commitment around College Football, we’d have a great ability to do the same for college basketball, and as we look to try and activate against that opportunity, we’ll be able to share more.” (link)

The World Athletics Council has approved new regulations concerning eligibility conditions to compete in the female category for world ranking competitions. Effective September 1, all athletes wishing to compete in the female category at the World Championships are required to undergo a “once-in-a-lifetime test for the SRY gene – a reliable proxy for determining biological sex. This is to be conducted via a cheek swab or blood test, whichever is more convenient.” World Athletics President Sebastian Coe: “The philosophy that we hold dear in World Athletics is the protection and the promotion of the integrity of women's sport. It is really important in a sport that is permanently trying to attract more women that they enter a sport believing there is no biological glass ceiling. The test to confirm biological sex is a very important step in ensuring this is the case. We are saying, at elite level, for you to compete in the female category, you have to be biologically female. It was always very clear to me and the World Athletics Council that gender cannot trump biology.” (link)
