More on new Stanford AD John Donahoe, as GM of Football Andrew Luck will report to Donahoe once he begins on September 8. President Jon Levin: “Stanford occupies a unique place in the national athletics landscape. We needed a distinctive leader – someone with the vision, judgment, and strategic acumen for a new era of college athletics, and with a deep appreciation for Stanford’s model of scholar-athlete excellence. John embodies these characteristics. We’re grateful he has agreed to lead Stanford Athletics through this critical period in college sports.” Luck adds: “He brings unparalleled experience and elite leadership to our athletic department in a time of opportunity and change. I could not be more excited to partner with and learn from him.” (link)

Other notable members of the 30-person President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition include Michigan Women’s Lacrosse alum/U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Senior Policy Advisor Catherine Granito who will serve as Executive Director, Texas Tech System Board of Directors Chairman Cody Campbell, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and more. Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier spoke with the Daily Chronicle’s Eddie Carifio about leaving the Mid-American Conference, saying it has been a lesson in persistence. “If I gave up, we’d never be in the Mountain West. We’d never be in the Horizon. I would have packed it up. I would have gotten in the fetal position and I would be underneath this desk and the thing would be over.” Asked about the sustainability of the industry being outside of the Power 4: “I believe it’s sustainable if you look yourself in the mirror. I think when you try to chase something, maybe if you’re a G6 and you’re chasing a Power 4 model, it’s not sustainable. I think if you throw your hands up and say ‘Hey, we can’t keep a roster. We can’t keep up with the financial outbidding or the roster purging,’ it becomes not sustainable. […] It’s an unfortunate scenario as a Group of 6 institution, because when you split the pie, you fight among yourselves, you divide, you’re conquered. It’s clear the Power 4 institutions, or Power 2 depending on how you look at things, are very organized in what they do. And for us to be truly competitive and be able to continue to serve our constituencies, we need to unite.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork was on with 97.1 The Fan’s “Bishop and Friends” show and said the Buckeyes will roll out new changes next week relating to fan atmosphere on football game days. “We’re calling it ‘Tradition Evolved.’ So tradition, but there’s an evolution of things that can happen. So those things are all being contemplated, all rolling out.” Bjork said Ohio State wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of fan commitment in a College Football Playoff, not sure which games would be the priority for fans: “We learned a lot about fan engagement, ticket sales. We were really worried. Like ‘Which game would you pick? OK, if you’re a season-ticket holder, you pick the home game, most people did. Am I going to wait and go to the quarterfinals? Rose Bowl, iconic. Am I going to wait for the semifinals, hope we win against Oregon? I think our fans did a great job traveling. I don’t think anyone took a weekend off, per se. We learned a lot about that piece of it.” (link)

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart was asked about the revenue-sharing plan during UK Football Media Day and said the Wildcats don't want to disclose those figures for others to see, but that coaches are pleased with how it stands right now. Barnhart adds that UK will need to be "nimble" in the future and reveals that six sports will participate in revenue sharing: football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball. Barnhart was also asked what a successful football season would look like and declined to define it with a number of wins but noted the Cats would have to fight, adding that Football HC Mark Stoops is good at fighting through adversity. As it relates to the SEC football schedule, Barnhart reiterated his position that eight games is better for UK. “Being able to have eight home football games is really important to us. If we move to nine, that's going to be tough for us in terms of non-conference scheduling.” (link); Barnhart also joined Kentucky Sports Radio and said UK will be keeping all sports. He also acknowledged UK was the school that vetoed an SEC proposal that would have required all schools to spend the same revenue share on each sport. Even as the max amount of revenue that can be shared increases, Barnhart confirmed UK will be able to fund to that level. (link)

August 1 was the first day college programs can give athletes written NIL offers, but Auburn AD John Cohen isn’t sure who’s following what rules anymore, telling WJOX’s McElroy and Cubelic: “Maybe the whole world’s already providing written offers illegally. Maybe we’re going to enforce it, maybe we’re not, who knows? I do know that the CSC has a three-man crew working, for 70 Power 4 schools, you know. Whatever. I’m not making light of this, but this is our daily world. We’re trying to abide by rules, trying to treat it with the utmost seriousness, and we know there are others out there in the world who are not. Maybe we have to pivot and play by the other rules.” Cohen on the system in place and the opportunity for third-party deals: “I am a believer in what we are all trying to do, until it is proven to me that it can’t work. […] We’re going to be super-aggressive in that area with third parties. There is no limit with third parties. We’re going to get super-aggressive in that area. When you’re talking about caps, it’s critically important you don’t want to go over your caps and make sure you get the best use of your cap, but if there’s unlimited third-party opportunities, and they have to be approved by NIL Go, we’re going to jump heavily into that area as well.” (link); On3’s Pete Nakos adds some schools are holding off for now and gets this from a Power 4 GM: “They can’t sign anything until December, so there’s really no point. People would be dumb to do it.” Other schools are at the opposite extreme, committing to monthly payments to recruits before they’ve even gotten to campus. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher is unconvinced the only reason the Pac-12 announced its CBS deal early was so schools would have something to sell to coaches, recruits, and the public while the rest of the deal is finalized. “Keep in mind, litigation between the Pac-12 and Mountain West is ongoing. CBS was a long-time TV partner of the MW. Pac-12 sources are waving me off on the conspiracy front, but I can’t help but wonder if the conference announced CBS early as a leverage play during mediation.” Speaking of the full media deal, Canzano reports the Pac-12 is “ramping up to announce another piece,” adding: “I don’t expect anything in the next 24-72 hours, but it’s moving along and getting close. The process sounds like it has been painstaking. It’s important to remember that this is essentially a new conference, with a bunch of new schools and brand-new media deals. It’s not a renewal of a deal with existing TV partners. The construction of the deals has been from scratch.” Canzano expects The CW to be a partner in the new deal and anticipates that Warner Bros. Discovery will be a media partner with both football and basketball. “ESPN+ remains my pick to carry the Pac-12’s non-revenue generating sports (Note: Pac-12 Enterprises ends up as a nice side hustle).” On the expansion front: “Several schools that are being considered by the Pac-12 for potential football and/or basketball additions are in a holding pattern. They’re content to stay there, waiting for a spell, but will need some clarity in the next four to six weeks. After all, their current conferences will begin planning for the schedules involving competition in 2026. Conferences typically begin to plan one year out.” More from Canzano. (link)

Deal Corner… + The NFL and ESPN have reached an agreement – worth billions in equity in ESPN, reportedly – that would have NFL Red Zone, NFL Network and other assets under ESPN control, per The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, who adds: “The NFL may receive up to 10 percent of ESPN equity, sources confirmed. That detail was reported previously by CNBC. There could be a term length to the agreement, according to one person briefed on the agreement, but it is not yet known how that will be prescribed. […] The ESPN-NFL deal will require regulatory approval, which could take nine months to a year. If it goes into effect next season, it would be part of a big year for ESPN as the 2026-27 year ends with the network broadcasting its first Super Bowl. The game will also be on ABC, which Disney also owns.” An official announcement is expected next week. (link) + West Virginia has its first officially licensed craft beers, reaching agreements with Big Timber Brewing and New Trail Brewing Company. International enrollment in U.S. universities could drop by 15%, according to industry projections, with a cost of $7B in lost revenue, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education’s Karin Fischer. A severe backlog could prevent 150K international students from getting the necessary visas, creating a drop of 30-40% in new foreign enrollments. “In every case, we will take the time necessary to ensure an applicant does not pose a risk to the safety and security of the United States, and that he or she has credibly established his or her eligibility for the visa sought, including that the applicant intends to engage in activities consistent with the terms of admission,” a State Department spokesperson said. President Donald Trump has appointed LIV golfer Bryson DeChambeau, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker and WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition and says the commission "will be working on college football in terms of what happened. It's a mess. What they're doing with college football – and the fans are upset about it. Players are being taken from team after team and traded around like playing cards. And a lot of money’s passing and nobody knows what’s happening, so these people behind me are going to be very much involved in figuring that whole thing out and working on it and trying to bring some sanity to that incredible, not only the football, college sports – very, very bad for women because all of the sudden there’s no women that are able to get the money that they’re talking about. It seems to be going mostly to football, some basketball, and women’s sports are being totally decimated. … Women are being left behind and lesser sports are being left behind and the Olympics is being decimated because that was training for the Olympics and now we’re not going to have many of those sports left. The smaller sports, they’re almost going to be completely wiped out.” (link)

Stanford will hire former Nike, ServiceNow, eBay and Bain & Company President/CEO John Donahoe as its next AD, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Seth Wickersham, who add: “Stanford coveted a non-traditional candidate for the role. […] He's viewed by school officials as a ‘unicorn candidate’ because of extensive business experience and ties to the school. He’s a Stanford MBA graduate from 1986 and brings a wide business background to the athletic department.” Elevate Talent assisted with the search. (link)

Oregon AD Rob Mullens covered several topics on the Duck Insider podcast, including the challenges associated with planning for the future, about which he explained: “I wouldn’t even begin to think about five years. The House settlement was approved in early June, short runway for an effective July 1 date. And as for people that are following the headlines, there’s already been some back and forth about the settlement and definitions or interpretations. That’s being worked out. So I think this next year – implementation – we’ll learn a lot. Everything’s good in theory. You have to apply it in practice. So there’ll be considerable time doing that.” On football ticket demand following the first season in the Big Ten: “Seven games on national TV on broadcast. The numbers, the social media interaction, the reach was pretty powerful, right? Which means that fans’ tickets are going fast. We were essentially sold out on a season ticket basis last year, and we’re right there again. I get the update frequently and we’re under 100 season tickets available, and we’re seeing a strong lift now that Big Ten media days has happened and practice is starting. Wisconsin, USC are going to follow as individual sellouts quickly. And then it’ll cascade from there.” Mullens acknowledged there has been some frustration over secondary market pricing but urged fans to buy now at face value before the inevitable sellouts. North Carolina will have a $185M athletic budget at a time where the university is trying to trim its budget, and UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts says he understands the balance of those two things. “We’re sensitive to that. We certainly understand that concern. The revenues for football come from sources that aren’t available for other university priorities. We can’t take money from the ACC television contract and spend it on the chemistry department. And all our peers are in the same situation. We’re in an unprecedented era of college athletics. Everybody is trying to figure out how to drive more revenue. Football is in the driver’s seat in that regard. We’re committed to staying competitive in football…and we’re going to continue to invest to try to ensure that level of success.” (link)

The NCAA's appeal of Rutgers football student-athlete Jett Elad's preliminary injunction has been “tentatively listed to be heard by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday, September 15,” according to Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich, and Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes it “will be an important decision w/ respect to the future of NCAA eligibility rules. It’s the same appellate court that affirmed the denial of the NCAA’s motion to dismiss in Johnson v NCAA, said college athletes can be employees & created a new test for making that determination.” (link)

Wisconsin will continue to play home games in Milwaukee, including an Oct. 24 men’s basketball exhibition against Oklahoma and Dec. 19 showdown with Villanova. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s John Steppe writes that maintaining a Badgers presence in the state’s largest market is only smart. Badgers AD Chris McIntosh: “There’s a disproportionately high number of alums and ticket holders there, and there’s just a tremendous appetite for anything Badger in that marketplace. … That market is very much important to us.” (link)

San Jose State AD Jeff Konya was asked a series of questions by a Fox News reporter about the situation involving a transgender women’s volleyball player last season, including whether he was aware that the Willkie Farr & Gallagher law firm was hired by the Mountain West to investigate misconduct allegations against and defend the eligibility of an SJSU volleyball player. Konya says he was not aware the firm was hired to do both, noting: “We participated in the investigation. The Mountain West hired an attorney to do it. We participated fully. We were asked for a list of interviewees. We gave the list…and those [student-athletes and coaches] that chose to talk with them talked with them.” Konya also says the decision about whether SJSU will make concessions similar to those that Penn made as part of an investigation by the Trump administration is not his to make, noting the matter is still in litigation. Montana State AD Leon Costello says the Bobcats are in the process of updating the facilities master plan and anticipates releasing it late this summer or early in the fall. The plan will include "probably some projects on there that you expect, but also with some new projects of how we’d like to grow and expand what we’re doing in athletics.” Costello also says the department “generates more than 60% of our annual operating budget every year, and a large part of that is due to hitting record numbers in sponsorships, in ticket sales and donations and capital projects.” Speaking inside the soon-to-open Kennedy-Stark Athletic Center, Costello noted that getting non-conference football teams to come to Bozeman or any Big Sky institution is difficult “because we are the furthest western-playing football conference in the FCS. But going back to what [Big Sky Commissioner] Tom Wistrcill said at Big Sky Football Kickoff, that’s one of the reasons we looked at going to nine conference games. With the advent of 12 regular season games, adding another conference game minimizes our efforts in trying to go out and schedule non-conference games.” More. (link)

Levy will pay a 45% commission on all food concessions sales at Michigan State athletics venues, according to SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who adds: “The food and beverage hospitality provider also pays a 50% commission on all alcohol sales, which the university began at its athletic venues in 2023. The venues Levy will service include the 75,000-capacity Spartan Stadium, the 14,759-capacity Breslin Center, the Munn Ice Arena and five other venues.” The deal runs through June 30, 2035, and MSU “has a five-year renewal option, as well as the one-time right to terminate the agreement, for any reason, after five years (effective June 30, 2030), as long as MSU provides Levy notification in writing on or before March 31, 2030. Additionally, Levy will invest $8M to fund cap-ex projects that generate incremental revenue at the athletic facilities covered in the deal. No single cap-ex project shall exceed $5M. Several other stipulations include MSU venues becoming cashless by the beginning of the agreement, and all concessions sales utilizing disposable plates, cutlery and cups, unless directed otherwise by MSU.” (link)

+ Want to work at Southern Miss? Deputy AD/CRO Spencer Bridges joins College.town’s Kristen Eargle to share specifics of the Golden Eagles’ Assoc. AD for Revenue Generation opening. Bridges also talks about the unique culture in Hattiesburg, how this role is pivotal for the department and some of the initiatives on the front burner. Bridges explains this role includes a ticketing component and a development component. “I think structurally we’re in a good spot from a ticketing perspective. They will need to understand – we’re a Paciolan school, how that works – and how our donors can be looked up and the processes and getting ahead of pricing and season tickets and being at the forefront of that and being head of that team. … A ticketing background is a great thing to have for this particular role, but also really looking for the development side. I think there’s an important opportunity here for us to structure that and get to the point where that role understands development and how to steward the life cycle of our donors.” (link)
