New Mexico State announces its AD search committee, which is chaired by President’s Office Chief of Staff Justin Bannister and includes the likes of Men’s Basketball HC Jason Hooten, Softball HC Kathy Rodolph, NMSU regent chair Ammu Devasthali and NMSU Community Colleges Chancellor Monica Torres. Also of note in updated context from university President Valerio Ferme: “We grow fierce competitors who are not afraid to do the difficult work needed to achieve goals that ‘punch’ above the university’s weight and demonstrate the hardiness of the Aggie mentality. We are seeking individuals who enjoy the role of underdogs, both in our conference and on the national stage.” Full committee can be found via the link. Parker Executive Search is assisting. (link); The D1.dossier for New Mexico State has been ready for weeks & will help you win the job. Indiana State AD Nathan Christensen: “D1.dossiers were a huge asset during the education and interview process. Having high level, detailed information at your fingertips was extremely helpful. I would recommend it if anyone is going through the process, saves time and energy digging trying to find the correct information.” (link)

Former NC State AD Debbie Yow, who hired new Rutgers AD Keli Zinn at Maryland, says of Zinn: “She’ll fight for Rutgers. She’s Southern, like me, and people have this idea about Southern women. But Southern women are tenacious. They’re tough. They just do it softly. But they get it done.” Yow also observes: “I’m seeing the trend where you go hire a businessperson, but they have no clue what they’re stepping into. You have about 20 different constituent groups you have to please, whether it’s boosters, or parents, or the state legislature, or the NCAA, or the president’s council, or the student body, or the athletes – there’s just no end to it. All the years [Zinn] has spent in the room contributing to the decisions now becomes critically important, because she’s seen so much. Both good and bad.” Also from Yow: “She’s not going to implode. You’re not going to pick up the paper one day, look at a statement she made and go, ‘Oh. My. God. What in the world was she thinking?’ She’s not going to have an affair with anybody. That’s a good start!” (link)

More Ohio State AD Ross Bjork on 97.1 The Fan … when asked about Michigan potentially playing a home game in Germany and whether his school would consider such a move: “We have to have seven home games. We have to, at The Shoe. The community deserves it, our players deserve it. Obviously, economically, we know what happened when we had six home games. We did not meet a budget goal for FY24 because we only had six home games in 2023. So we would never give up a home game, but if somebody else wants to give up a home game, Ireland has been a big draw for a number of teams. We would absolutely look at that. Our brand transcends the state, transcends our country. It’s international. We really have an NFL brand value at Ohio State, so we would look at that, but not at the sacrifice of a home game.” (link)

A federal judge has granted the plaintiffs’ emergency motion for preliminary injunction against Stephen F. Austin, which means the school’s attempt to cut three sports programs has been halted. The plaintiffs are six female student-athletes from the beach volleyball, bowling and golf teams who filed a class action suit against SFA for alleged violations of Title IX. (link)

Could MAC football teams knocking off nationally ranked major-conference teams be a thing of the past? The Athletic’s Austin Meek asks if the House settlement and revenue sharing will widen the gap between haves and have-nots and make such upsets a rare occurrence. Miami (OH) HC Chuck Martin believes the rules have changed, but the problems might be the same: “The boys that want to pay, they’ll just go back to cheating. We’ll go full circle, from ‘This is going to legalize it’ to now we’re hampering them and they want to do more. So let’s go back to showing up in a Speedway parking lot with a bag.” As for the impact of revenue sharing, Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher states: “Given the new system we’re moving into, I think the pressures will be even higher at the upper level of the food chain. I think they’re going to have very similar issues to what we will have.” (link)

The Deseret News’ Amy Ortiz deep dives into BYU’s strict honor code, by which all students, faculty and staff must abide. Ortiz notes “recent discussions surrounding former BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff and his decision to withdraw from the university, after facing a seven-game suspension for violating the school’s honor code, have reignited questions about the code and how it functions today.” BYU AD Brian Santiago: “It’s something that we’ll never shy away from. And I think our competitive advantage into the future in college athletics is who we represent, the honor code (and) the way that we are unashamed about what it is.” As for its impact on recruiting student-athletes, Santiago notes: “Some of the best in the country are going, ‘It’s exactly what we’re looking for. We want this structure, we want the discipline, we want leadership.” Lots more on the history of the code and its slight modifications over the years. (link)

The Seattle Times’ Sophia Vesely writes that softball’s inclusion as part of Washington’s stated revenue-sharing plans provides validation for the program’s long history of success. Huskies Softball HC Heather Tarr: “Not every conference and school are going to put softball on that pedestal. [AD] Pat Chun and our administration have done that for us, and it’s huge. It’s a big step.” While the amount eventually proffered to UW softball might not prove significant, being included says everything. Tarr: “[Softball] doesn’t get what football is obviously going to get [in revenue share], sadly. It’s not getting what women’s and men’s basketball are getting, [which] are in the millions. We have a small amount of support, but the fact that the university saw in softball the potential to generate revenue, that’s a big thing. There are a lot of other sports that didn’t have that opportunity whether it be at our school or other schools, so we feel very supported by that.” It’s a luxury that other high-profile programs might not have as reigning WCWS champ Texas and runner-up Texas Tech reportedly haven’t yet been publicly specified as part of their respective department’s rev share distribution. According to Vesely, the recent shift in perspective on a softball player’s value might also have had something to do with Washington’s inclusion following Red Raiders pitcher Nijaree Canady’s record-setting seven-figure NIL contracts as well as the success of the burgeoning Athletes Unlimited pro league. Tarr: “[Texas Tech] literally upped the market for what a softball athlete could get, so that is really cool for our sport. And it’s not been done like that. People treat football like that, but to do that for softball, whoever is behind that, good on them.” (link)

Syracuse.com’s Chris Carlson chronicles the dissolution of the relationship between Syracuse and prominent donor Adam Weitsman and notes that while prominent former players complained about how Weitsman was treated, university officials privately “grumbled that Weitsman’s contributions were overblown” and that he “wasn’t worth the headaches.” SU SVP for Communications Sarah Scalese said Weitsman “is not a major donor at Syracuse University.” Carlson also notes there was some concern at the time about whether such transactions were within NCAA rules: “Syracuse’s basketball program had already been the subject of two NCAA investigations, leading to tournament bans in 1993 and 2015. Syracuse wanted its boosters to follow the rules. Or at least fly under the radar given the lack of clarity of the guidelines.” The university declined comment on whether it was contacted by the NCAA about Weitsman, who said he believes the SU administration feels differently about him than members of its athletic department. Weitsman on Orange AD John Wildhack: “John was always respectful. This was way over John’s head.” The university said Weitsman has paid $952,838 into its athletic funds in order to buy basketball and football tickets in premium areas, and Scalese points out that “the vast majority of his payments are transactional in nature, meaning he received a service in return for payment.” Lots more. As athletic departments across the country adapt to revenue sharing, the amount of open jobs posted throughout the industry has nosedived over the last two years. To be specific, the total number of job openings listed throughout the overall marketplace in July 2025 has plummeted by 66.15% in DI, DII, DIII and NAIA combined when compared to July 2024. In DI, listings have fallen by an astonishing 67.97% in the same time period. Broken down further, DI job openings posted with the NCAA dipped by 33.52%. Despite this downward spiral, the CollegeSports.jobs site continues to thrive. To wit, overall job postings across College.town publications have increased by 20.32% YOY, and D1.ticker alone has experienced a 21% uptick. What does this mean? It means that if the conventional wisdom says to meet the customers where they are, you can find yours browsing the bustling streets of College.town. (link)

More from SBJ’s Ticketing Roundtable as BSE Global EVP for Ticketing Paul Kavanaugh talks fan development for the Brooklyn Nets. Kavanaugh noted the team’s fan base isn’t as deeply established or generational as the New York Knicks’ fan base and as such, pitching 43- or 44-game ticket packages is challenging. In response, SBJ’s Ben Fischer and Bret McCormick explain the Nets have “leaned into 11-game, quarter-season packages. They offer four of them, with packs featuring Eastern Conference rivals, the Western Conference’s best teams and solely weekend games. The All-Star pack is the most expensive, and the weekend plan is geared more toward families, for whom weeknights are nonstarters. The fourth one, called the starter pack, surprised Kavanaugh with how well it has sold; it features some of the Nets’ lowest-demand games but at the best price, and has prevented the team from leaking ticket revenue into the anonymous secondary market.” Kavanaugh: “The starter plan has been really, really popular and we realized, especially in our market, there’s people that want to go to games, and if they can afford it, they’re going to go. And by having that plan available, we think it’s prevented our quarter-season focus from creating any arbitrage opportunities because they’re really not there to take advantage of.” (link)

In weighing in on Comcast’s sports strategy of moving games that have streamed exclusively on Peacock to a new cable channel, Puck’s Julia Alexander observes that “rather than try to recreate ESPN, FS1, or NBCSN – after all, cable is in irreversible decline – the new network would use a skinny bundle strategy to complement Peacock and appeal to price-conscious customers frustrated with traditional cable bloat. … If executed correctly, the strategy could be a cost-effective way to reach users unwilling to subscribe to Peacock, or engage with it via aggregation. And if successful, NBCUniversal could tap into three revenue streams—streaming, wholesale cable bundling, and the new channel itself—without needing to acquire more rights or spend on supplementary programming. Smart economics, minimal expansion.” While no one at NBCU is expecting a cable revival, Alexander points out that Peacock is one of the last major streamers still operating in the red, and the “broader goal is to grow the video segment holistically by offering advertisers maximum reach with the help of cable. Historically, advertisers have been slow to follow audiences to new distribution models. Digital video is expected to account for 58% of total ad spend in 2025, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau, up from 38% in 2021. The new spending now aligns with streaming’s share of TV in the U.S., but there are still millions of intransigent consumers available to be monetized.” (link)

More on new Stanford AD John Donahoe, as GM of Football Andrew Luck will report to Donahoe once he begins on September 8. President Jon Levin: “Stanford occupies a unique place in the national athletics landscape. We needed a distinctive leader – someone with the vision, judgment, and strategic acumen for a new era of college athletics, and with a deep appreciation for Stanford’s model of scholar-athlete excellence. John embodies these characteristics. We’re grateful he has agreed to lead Stanford Athletics through this critical period in college sports.” Luck adds: “He brings unparalleled experience and elite leadership to our athletic department in a time of opportunity and change. I could not be more excited to partner with and learn from him.” (link)

Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier spoke with the Daily Chronicle’s Eddie Carifio about leaving the Mid-American Conference, saying it has been a lesson in persistence. “If I gave up, we’d never be in the Mountain West. We’d never be in the Horizon. I would have packed it up. I would have gotten in the fetal position and I would be underneath this desk and the thing would be over.” Asked about the sustainability of the industry being outside of the Power 4: “I believe it’s sustainable if you look yourself in the mirror. I think when you try to chase something, maybe if you’re a G6 and you’re chasing a Power 4 model, it’s not sustainable. I think if you throw your hands up and say ‘Hey, we can’t keep a roster. We can’t keep up with the financial outbidding or the roster purging,’ it becomes not sustainable. […] It’s an unfortunate scenario as a Group of 6 institution, because when you split the pie, you fight among yourselves, you divide, you’re conquered. It’s clear the Power 4 institutions, or Power 2 depending on how you look at things, are very organized in what they do. And for us to be truly competitive and be able to continue to serve our constituencies, we need to unite.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork was on with 97.1 The Fan’s “Bishop and Friends” show and said the Buckeyes will roll out new changes next week relating to fan atmosphere on football game days. “We’re calling it ‘Tradition Evolved.’ So tradition, but there’s an evolution of things that can happen. So those things are all being contemplated, all rolling out.” Bjork said Ohio State wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of fan commitment in a College Football Playoff, not sure which games would be the priority for fans: “We learned a lot about fan engagement, ticket sales. We were really worried. Like ‘Which game would you pick? OK, if you’re a season-ticket holder, you pick the home game, most people did. Am I going to wait and go to the quarterfinals? Rose Bowl, iconic. Am I going to wait for the semifinals, hope we win against Oregon? I think our fans did a great job traveling. I don’t think anyone took a weekend off, per se. We learned a lot about that piece of it.” (link)

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart was asked about the revenue-sharing plan during UK Football Media Day and said the Wildcats don't want to disclose those figures for others to see, but that coaches are pleased with how it stands right now. Barnhart adds that UK will need to be "nimble" in the future and reveals that six sports will participate in revenue sharing: football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball. Barnhart was also asked what a successful football season would look like and declined to define it with a number of wins but noted the Cats would have to fight, adding that Football HC Mark Stoops is good at fighting through adversity. As it relates to the SEC football schedule, Barnhart reiterated his position that eight games is better for UK. “Being able to have eight home football games is really important to us. If we move to nine, that's going to be tough for us in terms of non-conference scheduling.” (link); Barnhart also joined Kentucky Sports Radio and said UK will be keeping all sports. He also acknowledged UK was the school that vetoed an SEC proposal that would have required all schools to spend the same revenue share on each sport. Even as the max amount of revenue that can be shared increases, Barnhart confirmed UK will be able to fund to that level. (link)

August 1 was the first day college programs can give athletes written NIL offers, but Auburn AD John Cohen isn’t sure who’s following what rules anymore, telling WJOX’s McElroy and Cubelic: “Maybe the whole world’s already providing written offers illegally. Maybe we’re going to enforce it, maybe we’re not, who knows? I do know that the CSC has a three-man crew working, for 70 Power 4 schools, you know. Whatever. I’m not making light of this, but this is our daily world. We’re trying to abide by rules, trying to treat it with the utmost seriousness, and we know there are others out there in the world who are not. Maybe we have to pivot and play by the other rules.” Cohen on the system in place and the opportunity for third-party deals: “I am a believer in what we are all trying to do, until it is proven to me that it can’t work. […] We’re going to be super-aggressive in that area with third parties. There is no limit with third parties. We’re going to get super-aggressive in that area. When you’re talking about caps, it’s critically important you don’t want to go over your caps and make sure you get the best use of your cap, but if there’s unlimited third-party opportunities, and they have to be approved by NIL Go, we’re going to jump heavily into that area as well.” (link); On3’s Pete Nakos adds some schools are holding off for now and gets this from a Power 4 GM: “They can’t sign anything until December, so there’s really no point. People would be dumb to do it.” Other schools are at the opposite extreme, committing to monthly payments to recruits before they’ve even gotten to campus. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher is unconvinced the only reason the Pac-12 announced its CBS deal early was so schools would have something to sell to coaches, recruits, and the public while the rest of the deal is finalized. “Keep in mind, litigation between the Pac-12 and Mountain West is ongoing. CBS was a long-time TV partner of the MW. Pac-12 sources are waving me off on the conspiracy front, but I can’t help but wonder if the conference announced CBS early as a leverage play during mediation.” Speaking of the full media deal, Canzano reports the Pac-12 is “ramping up to announce another piece,” adding: “I don’t expect anything in the next 24-72 hours, but it’s moving along and getting close. The process sounds like it has been painstaking. It’s important to remember that this is essentially a new conference, with a bunch of new schools and brand-new media deals. It’s not a renewal of a deal with existing TV partners. The construction of the deals has been from scratch.” Canzano expects The CW to be a partner in the new deal and anticipates that Warner Bros. Discovery will be a media partner with both football and basketball. “ESPN+ remains my pick to carry the Pac-12’s non-revenue generating sports (Note: Pac-12 Enterprises ends up as a nice side hustle).” On the expansion front: “Several schools that are being considered by the Pac-12 for potential football and/or basketball additions are in a holding pattern. They’re content to stay there, waiting for a spell, but will need some clarity in the next four to six weeks. After all, their current conferences will begin planning for the schedules involving competition in 2026. Conferences typically begin to plan one year out.” More from Canzano. (link)

Deal Corner… + The NFL and ESPN have reached an agreement – worth billions in equity in ESPN, reportedly – that would have NFL Red Zone, NFL Network and other assets under ESPN control, per The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, who adds: “The NFL may receive up to 10 percent of ESPN equity, sources confirmed. That detail was reported previously by CNBC. There could be a term length to the agreement, according to one person briefed on the agreement, but it is not yet known how that will be prescribed. […] The ESPN-NFL deal will require regulatory approval, which could take nine months to a year. If it goes into effect next season, it would be part of a big year for ESPN as the 2026-27 year ends with the network broadcasting its first Super Bowl. The game will also be on ABC, which Disney also owns.” An official announcement is expected next week. (link) + West Virginia has its first officially licensed craft beers, reaching agreements with Big Timber Brewing and New Trail Brewing Company. International enrollment in U.S. universities could drop by 15%, according to industry projections, with a cost of $7B in lost revenue, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education’s Karin Fischer. A severe backlog could prevent 150K international students from getting the necessary visas, creating a drop of 30-40% in new foreign enrollments. “In every case, we will take the time necessary to ensure an applicant does not pose a risk to the safety and security of the United States, and that he or she has credibly established his or her eligibility for the visa sought, including that the applicant intends to engage in activities consistent with the terms of admission,” a State Department spokesperson said.
