More from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips Q&As with SB Nation’s Mitchell Northam on all things Women’s Basketball, plus more. On whether the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament should stick with a double-regional format: “I don’t think you can sit idle when you’re trying to nurture and develop and continue to grow the game. These are pivotal moments. We should look at it with no predetermined outcomes and see what’s right. Because it would be great if we could get to the point where we did go to more sites and spread the game around even more. But I know that’s delicate because it is based on some financial stuff, and it is based on how many fans would attend and some of those things. We want our student-athletes to have great experiences and to play in sold out arenas. And we’re moving in that direction. So we’ve made progress, but again, I think there’s still some more work to do.” Is the ACC watching the growth of flag football and considering whether to add it as a sponsored sport? “We are watching. We’ve had a few preliminary conversations, but nothing of substance. I think we’re all kind of watching what’s happening with the House Settlement and NIL. The focus has really been on implementing that, trying to do the very best we can for all of our student-athletes with additional scholarships, different additional revenue. So, we haven’t really had the proper time to really explore what’s happening in women’s flag football.” (link)

New Marshall AD Gerald Harrison sits down with Voice of the Herd Steve Cotton & touches on how he’ll approach the gameday experience for Thundering Herd fans: “One thing I learned at Tennessee, you have to try some things and see what sticks. It doesn't always the first time you do it. I'm pretty sure everybody in Neyland Stadium did not see the words of Rocky Top when the band played it the first time. But, I learned that you have to develop your traditions and let them work over time, and then success happens. At Duke, it was different. When I went from Tennessee football to Duke, I think the largest crowd at the time at Knoxville was like 109,000. I get to Duke and Duke had one of the longest losing streaks in history, and the stadium was 33,000. It had a track around it. [...] It wasn't very good, but we had to build it. Then when I got to Austin Peay, Austin Peay was trying to build their football brand back, their business back, and we learned and we talked about the fan experience so much. It doesn't have to be the best, but can you engage them now where we are in college athletics and in society, you better have your internet working. You have to have some big screens in there. You have to have some good food and some cold beverages to get folks to come into the game. And I can't wait to see Joan (C. Edwards Stadium) packed and bring that same energy and creativity to the game day atmosphere. Because if we get the fans in the stadium and we keep 'em energized, and I know the passion of Herd Nation and we give them something to cheer about, I cannot wait for that.” (link)

Front Office Sports Editor in Chief Daniel Roberts gets this from a partner at RedBird Capital Partners from the publisher’s Huddle in the Hamptons event: "College sports is the new frontier for private equity -- the reality is that schools need to pay the players. Stadiums need to be refurbished. Who's going to pay for that now?" (link)

A Stephen F. Austin spokesperson tells Sportico’s Daniel Libit the university plans to file an appeal to U.S. District Court Judge Michael Truncale’s preliminary injunction to keep the Lumberjacks from discontinuing Women’s Beach Volleyball, Women’s Bowling & Women’s Golf on account of a Title IX lawsuit filed by six SFA student-athletes. More from the university: “We remain confident in the legality and rationale behind our decision to reduce the number of sports we sponsor. The text of Title IX states that institutions may not discriminate on the basis of sex, and there was no evidence presented that SFA’s decision was based on sex. The evidence was overwhelming that the decision was based on economics.” (link)

Collegiate Sports Associates President Drew Turner joins the High Octane Leadership podcast and discusses CSA’s evolution from a boutique executive search to a broader academic leadership recruitment company and the importance of maintaining the relationship-driven culture that made it successful. Turner notes that “on August 1, we’ll officially launch our new academics division. We realized there was only so much room to grow in college athletics. There are only so many Division I schools, only so many AD and coaching jobs that open each year. To keep growing, we had to look beyond athletics. Our trusted relationships with boards of trustees and presidents – the very people who ultimately hire new ADs and coaches – positioned us to help with provosts, deans, and even presidents. We’ve been laying the groundwork for nearly a year, hiring Charlie Kaylor to lead the division. He’s been in academic search for over 15 years. We wanted to make sure the infrastructure was ready before we told the world. This isn’t a pivot; it’s an expansion into a space that aligns with our relationships and expertise.” Turner goes on to remark that “there are four things clients should demand when they hire a search firm. First, do they have the experience to manage searches of this magnitude? … Second, do they have the relationships and networks to really know what candidates are like beyond the interview process? Anybody can look good in a three‑month interview, but our team has worked inside higher ed and athletics, so we know the reality behind the résumés. Third, responsiveness and communication. These searches move fast — nights, weekends, holidays — and you can’t afford silence. Our clients know they won’t wait long for a call or email back. And fourth, do you actually enjoy working with them? We tell people, check our references. … We’re a boutique firm, so when you hire us, you’re working directly with the people you met in the interview – not handed off to someone else. Those four things are what we live every day, and that’s why we’ve grown.” Lots more. (link)

South Carolina Chief Revenue & Data Officer Dan Stahl joined College.town's Kristen Eargle from the 2025 NACDA Convention to talk about all things revenue generation in a post-House phase of college athletics. Stahl shares what has changed structurally for the Gamecocks and discusses untapped opportunities the department will focus on this year. Regarding the latter, Stahl explains that the “revenue potential from our premium offerings is a huge thing for the Gamecocks. We know we’ve been lacking and we’ve been working hard for about three years now to get this [$350M Williams Brice Stadium renovation] project where it is today. We're planning to be able to open the new areas of our stadium by 2027 and that could have the impact of $20-40M a year if we do it right. So, we’re really, really excited about that. But on the other side of things, we’re really proud of our data structure. I feel, candidly, that we have one of the best in the college athletic space, but even with that structure that we have in place, we haven’t taken full advantage of that potential. … I know the directive now to push revenue as much as we can and we’re going to try really hard to implement those new practices using our data to really drive revenue as we move forward.” Full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. To get a better sense of how often football players actually transfer, The Athletic’s David Ubben analyzed the top 50 prospects at every position in the Class of 2021 – the first in college football history to begin their careers with the freedom to transfer once with guaranteed, immediate eligibility – and tallied how many programs the 600 total prospects played for during their careers, including the number of times they transferred. In total, 60.3% (362 of 600) of players examined transferred at least once. Of that group, a third (33.4%) transferred multiple times. Ubben found that QBs transferred with the highest frequency. Of the top 50 prospects in the Class of 2021, 42 changed schools at least once while 18 transferred multiple times. Of those 18, only one (Christian Veilleux at Georgia State) has started at quarterback for an FBS team at his final destination. For comparison’s sake, in 2011, 24 QBs in the top 50 (48%) transferred. Just one among the top 50 in 2011 transferred twice. Also from Ubben: “While quarterbacks led the way with 84% of prospects transferring, followed closely by wide receivers at 82%, offensive and defensive lines were the only positions at which fewer than half of prospects transferred. Just 48% of offensive linemen transferred and 44% of defensive linemen transferred. … SportsSource data from the Class of 2011 indicates that the number of transfers has ballooned in the past decade. In a sample of 1,565 three-, four- and five-star prospects from 2011, only 16.2% of players transferred from their original schools. It's not a perfect comparison: SportsSource data is by star rating, and the 2021 data is built off the top 50 at each position regardless of star rating. But the difference between the two numbers is indicative of the shift in the sport.” Lots more. (link)

Last nugget from the recent SBJ Ticketing Roundtable discussion as New York City FC is 10 months into the roughly 32-month sales process for Etihad Park – the club’s $780M stadium in Queens that opens in 2027 – premium seating will carry a heavier portion of the club’s ticketing revenue stream compared to many new stadiums. If the traditional ratio is 80% of the revenue derived from 20% of the seats, Etihad Park might be closer to 85/15 or 90/10, according to club CEO Brad Sims, who notes the venue’s most exclusive space, the Tunnel Club, sold out in six weeks. “We talk about really monetizing beachfront property, so to speak, and really making sure we maximize that and we’re not leaving money on the table, we’re not leaving opportunity on the table. And the more that we can get out of our premium spaces, it will allow us to, I think, be even more affordable for the rest of the building.” SBJ’s Ben Fischer and Bret McCormick explain the club has released inventory slowly to give it time to inform itself about pricing and reactions to it. That approach is helping the club build its databases and sales funnels and know whether a fan is a Phase 1 buyer or a Phase 3 buyer, and what kind of demand there is for the products in each phase. Kraft Analytics Group CEO Jessica Gelman, meanwhile, notes that “we’re talking about sports right now, but particularly for a new venue, it would be a mistake to not think more broadly about the concert business. A 25,000-person venue is a great sweet spot for concerts today, and [thinking about] what offerings in that venue where you can actually watch the concerts from, the premium or non-premium, is a huge part of the equation.” (link)

@1QLeadership Question: What role do external partnerships, internal collaboration, and campus engagement play in growing the athletics program’s visibility, revenue, and fan base?
From the 2024 PacNet Conference, Phil Wang, Sr. Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs at UC Irvine, talks about his transition from finance to external affairs, and how the department is maximizing automation and innovation with Learfield and Paciolan.
Wang also covers collaboration with campus, the value of athletics within the university and broader community, and how the department operates with resources that could be considered limited in the context of the athletics industry. Listen on YouTube, Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

New Mexico State announces its AD search committee, which is chaired by President’s Office Chief of Staff Justin Bannister and includes the likes of Men’s Basketball HC Jason Hooten, Softball HC Kathy Rodolph, NMSU regent chair Ammu Devasthali and NMSU Community Colleges Chancellor Monica Torres. Also of note in updated context from university President Valerio Ferme: “We grow fierce competitors who are not afraid to do the difficult work needed to achieve goals that ‘punch’ above the university’s weight and demonstrate the hardiness of the Aggie mentality. We are seeking individuals who enjoy the role of underdogs, both in our conference and on the national stage.” Full committee can be found via the link. Parker Executive Search is assisting. (link); The D1.dossier for New Mexico State has been ready for weeks & will help you win the job. Indiana State AD Nathan Christensen: “D1.dossiers were a huge asset during the education and interview process. Having high level, detailed information at your fingertips was extremely helpful. I would recommend it if anyone is going through the process, saves time and energy digging trying to find the correct information.” (link)

Former NC State AD Debbie Yow, who hired new Rutgers AD Keli Zinn at Maryland, says of Zinn: “She’ll fight for Rutgers. She’s Southern, like me, and people have this idea about Southern women. But Southern women are tenacious. They’re tough. They just do it softly. But they get it done.” Yow also observes: “I’m seeing the trend where you go hire a businessperson, but they have no clue what they’re stepping into. You have about 20 different constituent groups you have to please, whether it’s boosters, or parents, or the state legislature, or the NCAA, or the president’s council, or the student body, or the athletes – there’s just no end to it. All the years [Zinn] has spent in the room contributing to the decisions now becomes critically important, because she’s seen so much. Both good and bad.” Also from Yow: “She’s not going to implode. You’re not going to pick up the paper one day, look at a statement she made and go, ‘Oh. My. God. What in the world was she thinking?’ She’s not going to have an affair with anybody. That’s a good start!” (link)

More Ohio State AD Ross Bjork on 97.1 The Fan … when asked about Michigan potentially playing a home game in Germany and whether his school would consider such a move: “We have to have seven home games. We have to, at The Shoe. The community deserves it, our players deserve it. Obviously, economically, we know what happened when we had six home games. We did not meet a budget goal for FY24 because we only had six home games in 2023. So we would never give up a home game, but if somebody else wants to give up a home game, Ireland has been a big draw for a number of teams. We would absolutely look at that. Our brand transcends the state, transcends our country. It’s international. We really have an NFL brand value at Ohio State, so we would look at that, but not at the sacrifice of a home game.” (link)

A federal judge has granted the plaintiffs’ emergency motion for preliminary injunction against Stephen F. Austin, which means the school’s attempt to cut three sports programs has been halted. Could MAC football teams knocking off nationally ranked major-conference teams be a thing of the past? The Athletic’s Austin Meek asks if the House settlement and revenue sharing will widen the gap between haves and have-nots and make such upsets a rare occurrence. Miami (OH) HC Chuck Martin believes the rules have changed, but the problems might be the same: “The boys that want to pay, they’ll just go back to cheating. We’ll go full circle, from ‘This is going to legalize it’ to now we’re hampering them and they want to do more. So let’s go back to showing up in a Speedway parking lot with a bag.” As for the impact of revenue sharing, Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher states: “Given the new system we’re moving into, I think the pressures will be even higher at the upper level of the food chain. I think they’re going to have very similar issues to what we will have.” (link)

The Deseret News’ Amy Ortiz deep dives into BYU’s strict honor code, by which all students, faculty and staff must abide. Ortiz notes “recent discussions surrounding former BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff and his decision to withdraw from the university, after facing a seven-game suspension for violating the school’s honor code, have reignited questions about the code and how it functions today.” BYU AD Brian Santiago: “It’s something that we’ll never shy away from. And I think our competitive advantage into the future in college athletics is who we represent, the honor code (and) the way that we are unashamed about what it is.” As for its impact on recruiting student-athletes, Santiago notes: “Some of the best in the country are going, ‘It’s exactly what we’re looking for. We want this structure, we want the discipline, we want leadership.” Lots more on the history of the code and its slight modifications over the years. (link)

The Seattle Times’ Sophia Vesely writes that softball’s inclusion as part of Washington’s stated revenue-sharing plans provides validation for the program’s long history of success. Huskies Softball HC Heather Tarr: “Not every conference and school are going to put softball on that pedestal. [AD] Pat Chun and our administration have done that for us, and it’s huge. It’s a big step.” While the amount eventually proffered to UW softball might not prove significant, being included says everything. Tarr: “[Softball] doesn’t get what football is obviously going to get [in revenue share], sadly. It’s not getting what women’s and men’s basketball are getting, [which] are in the millions. We have a small amount of support, but the fact that the university saw in softball the potential to generate revenue, that’s a big thing. There are a lot of other sports that didn’t have that opportunity whether it be at our school or other schools, so we feel very supported by that.” It’s a luxury that other high-profile programs might not have as reigning WCWS champ Texas and runner-up Texas Tech reportedly haven’t yet been publicly specified as part of their respective department’s rev share distribution. According to Vesely, the recent shift in perspective on a softball player’s value might also have had something to do with Washington’s inclusion following Red Raiders pitcher Nijaree Canady’s record-setting seven-figure NIL contracts as well as the success of the burgeoning Athletes Unlimited pro league. Tarr: “[Texas Tech] literally upped the market for what a softball athlete could get, so that is really cool for our sport. And it’s not been done like that. People treat football like that, but to do that for softball, whoever is behind that, good on them.” (link)

Syracuse.com’s Chris Carlson chronicles the dissolution of the relationship between Syracuse and prominent donor Adam Weitsman and notes that while prominent former players complained about how Weitsman was treated, university officials privately “grumbled that Weitsman’s contributions were overblown” and that he “wasn’t worth the headaches.” SU SVP for Communications Sarah Scalese said Weitsman “is not a major donor at Syracuse University.” Carlson also notes there was some concern at the time about whether such transactions were within NCAA rules: “Syracuse’s basketball program had already been the subject of two NCAA investigations, leading to tournament bans in 1993 and 2015. Syracuse wanted its boosters to follow the rules. Or at least fly under the radar given the lack of clarity of the guidelines.” The university declined comment on whether it was contacted by the NCAA about Weitsman, who said he believes the SU administration feels differently about him than members of its athletic department. Weitsman on Orange AD John Wildhack: “John was always respectful. This was way over John’s head.” The university said Weitsman has paid $952,838 into its athletic funds in order to buy basketball and football tickets in premium areas, and Scalese points out that “the vast majority of his payments are transactional in nature, meaning he received a service in return for payment.” Lots more. As athletic departments across the country adapt to revenue sharing, the amount of open jobs posted throughout the industry has nosedived over the last two years. To be specific, the total number of job openings listed throughout the overall marketplace in July 2025 has plummeted by 66.15% in DI, DII, DIII and NAIA combined when compared to July 2024. In DI, listings have fallen by an astonishing 67.97% in the same time period. Broken down further, DI job openings posted with the NCAA dipped by 33.52%. Despite this downward spiral, the CollegeSports.jobs site continues to thrive. To wit, overall job postings across College.town publications have increased by 20.32% YOY, and D1.ticker alone has experienced a 21% uptick. What does this mean? It means that if the conventional wisdom says to meet the customers where they are, you can find yours browsing the bustling streets of College.town. (link)

More from SBJ’s Ticketing Roundtable as BSE Global EVP for Ticketing Paul Kavanaugh talks fan development for the Brooklyn Nets. Kavanaugh noted the team’s fan base isn’t as deeply established or generational as the New York Knicks’ fan base and as such, pitching 43- or 44-game ticket packages is challenging. In response, SBJ’s Ben Fischer and Bret McCormick explain the Nets have “leaned into 11-game, quarter-season packages. They offer four of them, with packs featuring Eastern Conference rivals, the Western Conference’s best teams and solely weekend games. The All-Star pack is the most expensive, and the weekend plan is geared more toward families, for whom weeknights are nonstarters. The fourth one, called the starter pack, surprised Kavanaugh with how well it has sold; it features some of the Nets’ lowest-demand games but at the best price, and has prevented the team from leaking ticket revenue into the anonymous secondary market.” Kavanaugh: “The starter plan has been really, really popular and we realized, especially in our market, there’s people that want to go to games, and if they can afford it, they’re going to go. And by having that plan available, we think it’s prevented our quarter-season focus from creating any arbitrage opportunities because they’re really not there to take advantage of.” (link)

In weighing in on Comcast’s sports strategy of moving games that have streamed exclusively on Peacock to a new cable channel, Puck’s Julia Alexander observes that “rather than try to recreate ESPN, FS1, or NBCSN – after all, cable is in irreversible decline – the new network would use a skinny bundle strategy to complement Peacock and appeal to price-conscious customers frustrated with traditional cable bloat. … If executed correctly, the strategy could be a cost-effective way to reach users unwilling to subscribe to Peacock, or engage with it via aggregation. And if successful, NBCUniversal could tap into three revenue streams—streaming, wholesale cable bundling, and the new channel itself—without needing to acquire more rights or spend on supplementary programming. Smart economics, minimal expansion.” While no one at NBCU is expecting a cable revival, Alexander points out that Peacock is one of the last major streamers still operating in the red, and the “broader goal is to grow the video segment holistically by offering advertisers maximum reach with the help of cable. Historically, advertisers have been slow to follow audiences to new distribution models. Digital video is expected to account for 58% of total ad spend in 2025, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau, up from 38% in 2021. The new spending now aligns with streaming’s share of TV in the U.S., but there are still millions of intransigent consumers available to be monetized.” (link)
