USF Board of Trustees Chair Will Weatherford in a letter to fans explains that “as we launch our search for the next leader of USF Athletics, we want to share with you why this moment is different – and why we're not just hiring an athletic director. We are hiring a CEO of Athletics. This new title reflects more than a change in language. It reflects a new era in college sports, and a new vision for USF. In today's world, leading an athletics department is no longer just about managing teams or balancing a budget. It's about building a competitive enterprise, growing revenue, leading through change, and positioning our university – and our region – on the national stage. … To succeed in this environment, USF Athletics must be run like a serious business – because it is one.” Weatherford notes that USF remains “deeply committed to the student-athlete experience and to providing meaningful opportunities across all sports – including our Olympic sports programs…but we also know that winning, growing, and investing in our future requires a modern approach. That's where the CEO comes in. We're looking for a leader who understands both the boardroom and the locker room – someone who can drive revenue, elevate our brand, attract top-tier talent, and embrace innovation. Someone who sees the opportunity in USF and isn't afraid to dream big.” (link)

While the title “CEO of Athletics” may be something new, using a D1.dossier as a resource to help you win an AD job is not. The D1.dossier for USF is ready to help you do just that. Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller: “The D1.dossier was extremely helpful for the interview process by identifying the key stakeholders and providing the current landscape at Coastal Carolina. It saved me a tremendous amount of time from having to research and gather it myself. I appreciate the service and highly recommend it to my counterparts around the country.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel joins CBS News Detroit to discuss the future of the industry and acknowledges there is still uncertainty regarding Title IX: “There’s really been no clear indication from the Department of Education, from the settlement, from the court, around how that needs to be managed. So it is really a process where many of us are following what the court has done in terms of the settlement in the distribution because the reality is, and we’ve talked about it more lately than anything else, at Michigan, the sport of football funds 27 other programs. And if, on the other hand, we distribute it and don’t provide the majority or a good portion of the money to those who participate in football, lawsuits could be either way.” Manuel also discusses the possibility of student-athlete employment: “I am understanding that all schools couldn’t handle every student-athlete being employees. Michigan would find a way to figure it out if that happened. But to stabilize college athletics, to stop the lawsuits from happening, we need one of two things or both: we need collective bargaining and/or antitrust protection. Professional leagues have both.” Manuel adds that “I think where we are is good. I think providing the money to the student-athletes and doing revenue sharing is where we need to be. But we continue, every step we make in terms of trying to put rules in place to govern nationally, we get sued and that’s what we need to stop. We need to have the ability to have some rules to – not level the playing field; the playing field’s not level – but have some consistency.” (link)

North Texas AD Jared Mosley and East Carolina AD Jon Gilbert sat down with Sports Illustrated's Bryan Fischer at the 2025 NACDA Convention to discuss their approach to the House settlement and how it will impact revenue generation, scholarships, evaluating coaches and contracts with student-athletes. Gilbert says the “way we evaluate coaches is going to be a little bit different in this regard: We all want a good football team. We want to fund it as high as we can fund it, but I do think as athletic directors, we’re probably a little more in control of the success of some of our programs based on how we figure out the funding piece.” Gilbert also notes that he tells donors that “it wasn’t that long ago that you couldn’t give a student-athlete a ride across campus and now you can pretty much buy them a vehicle if you wanted to. So, I think being willing to evolve is a really big piece of [moving forward]. We know that more change is ahead. … I think making sure that we all figure out where we fit and what our niche is is going to be really key moving forward.” Lots more on Collegiate Sports Connect. With March Madness remaining at 68 teams for the 2026 season, Puck’s John Ourand notes that “doesn’t mean expansion is dead. … But motivation on the networks’ side may be diminished: While executives have discussed paying a nominal fee for the expanded tournament, they don’t significantly value a handful of early-round play-in games featuring smaller conferences and less competitive teams. Given the economic reality of cord-cutting, traditional media companies need to see real value in expansion, or they aren’t going to pay more for it. Anyway, all signs suggest that something will get done… eventually. Talks were decidedly not acrimonious, I’m told. To sweeten the pot, expect the NCAA to relax restrictions on networks’ ability to sell corporate sponsorships, something that probably would be enough to get this over the finish line.” (link)

USC Deputy AD for External/Chief of Staff Jay Hilbrands joins the Tunnel Vision podcast to discuss several topics, including saying roster limits are an overlooked aspect of the House settlement, noting that “at SC, you look at the variance in scholarship cost even across the footprint of the Big Ten conference and that can vary drastically across our conference, let alone the country and our peer institutions that we're competing against. So, I think that's one where you look at the cost of a scholarship at SC and what it could look like for a full ride scholarship at another institution and those numbers could be very different. … I think that’s something that probably isn't talked about enough and something that's top of mind for us.” (link)

As tennis programs throughout the country face uncertainty regarding their futures, the AP’s Steve Megargee points out that this year’s Wimbledon “featured a record 26 current or former college players in men’s singles and nine more in the women’s draw. TCU’s Jack Pinnington Jones and San Diego’s Oliver Tarvet, who reached the second round, played for their college teams just this spring. Ben Shelton, a 2022 NCAA singles champion at Florida, reached the quarterfinals.” ITA CEO Dennis Mullins: “Our position within the tennis industry has never been better. But on the other side, we’re dealing with all these things happening with the NCAA model. Probably the challenges that we’re facing from the collegiate side domestically have never been greater.” Mullins also notes the USTA has offered grants to colleges opening full-service tennis centers to foster the sport’s growth in their communities. Those schools then can make money by renting out their courts when their teams aren’t using them. South Carolina is the latest school to attempt this and has started organizing tennis lessons and classes while also exploring other potential revenue options. Gamecocks Deputy AD for Internal Operations & Risk Management Judy Van Horn: “Our goal isn’t going to necessarily put us completely in the black, but it reduces the financial footprint of men’s and women’s tennis.” (link)

Conference USA has added Nebraska, Sacred Heart and Wright State as affiliate members in bowling ahead of the 2025-26 season. Hats off to New Mexico AD Fernando Lovo and Football HC Jason Eck, who sent up the “Scott’s Tots” episode of The Office to promote a new initiative through which fans who purchase single-game general admission tickets in the north end zone can now get up to two free kids (12 and under) tickets for the same game. A special tip of the cap for the inclusion of this gem: “I have made some empty promises in my life, but hands down that was the most generous.” Have a watch. (link, link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann takes a look at USC football student-athlete DaJuanye “DJ” Wingfield’s eligibility lawsuit, noting that the complaint “raises arguments that have worked for some similarly situated DI athletes but not for others.” The suit contends the five-year eligibility rule violates antitrust law because it allegedly “has substantial anticompetitive effects on two-year or junior colleges and universities that are excluded from NCAA membership.” His complaint references how if he’s denied a chance to play, he’ll lose out on a “once-in-a-lifetime” NIL deal that is worth about $210K and is apparently contingent on him suiting up for the Trojans. Wingfield also asserts that NCAA eligibility rules “degrade the quality of competition” by excluding players, and that has “ripple” effects, including on the NFL Draft. Eligibility rules allegedly hinder athletes’ chances to earn NIL deals, since the athletes’ marketability is tied to their school’s brand. In a statement shared with McCann about Wingfield’s lawsuit, an NCAA spokesperson said the association’s eligibility rules “enable student-athletes and schools to have fair competition.” The spokesperson also said the NCAA is “making changes to modernize college sports” and that it “believes partnering with Congress is essential” to address the conflicting rulings on eligibility cases. While the programming and talent particulars of the NFL-ESPN deal have yet to be finalized, Sportico’s Anthony Crupi submits that “one working theory can be put back to sleep: the notion that this deal marks the beginning of the end of Disney’s stewardship of ESPN. As much as activist investors have tried to force the issue in recent years…Disney’s C-suite has consistently dismissed any such chatter. … As [Disney CEO Bob] Iger sees it, there are still enough pay-TV subscribers to justify sticking with the 46-year-old sports network and its even more ancient broadcast sibling. ESPN proper has 63.7M subscribers, making it one of the most-distributed channels on the cable dial, while ABC’s affiliate network puts it in some 83M U.S. TV homes.” Combined operating income at ESPN and the TV portfolio was $5.86B, accounting for 38% of the Mouse House’s overall profit, and in this summer’s upfront bazaar, Disney’s sales team booked a cool $4B in advance commitments for 2025-26. … While the streaming unit is on track to generate north of $1B in operating income in FY 2025, up from $143M in the prior year, Disney’s sports and TV holdings are still on pace to kick in at least 30% of the company’s total annual profits.” (link)

The Pro Volleyball Federation will merge with Major League Volleyball, “adopting the name of the start-up league and seeing Dallas join in the league’s third season,” according to SBJ’s Rachel Axon, who adds: “PVF finished its second season in May and faced losing one of its top teams in the Omaha Supernovas, which announced that it would move to MLV. That league was slated to begin play next year. MLV is currently slated to run in 2026 with eight teams, most of which played last season in PVF. Notably, Dallas will begin play after previously being pegged for expansion. The Vegas Thrill are not currently scheduled to compete in the league this year as it looks for local ownership to buy the team. According to the source, the league will expand in 2027 with a team in D.C. and California.” (link)

President Carrie Castille: "We appreciate what John has done for ULM Athletics over the last few seasons and wish him and his family all the best. There is a plan in place, and we will be making that plan known as soon as the logistics are finalized. My commitment to ULM Athletics and the Sun Belt Conference is unwavering, and we will continue to find ways to win on the field, on the court, in the community, and in the classroom." (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy observes that as the economics of college athletics change, “roles atop athletic departments have taken on new meaning – and the candidate pools are shifting with it.” Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione: “It’s not as if someone can just drop several things one was doing in a previous model and trade them for what we might have to be doing in the new model. It’s both – that’s where the difference is. … There isn’t a ‘how-to’ manual that is being distributed to the member institutions. It’s many of us having to lean into this, be innovative, not be afraid to try new things and probably have to go through a little bit of trial and error, which is uncomfortable.” Tennessee AD Danny White ponders whether his own career path is duplicable in today’s environment and tells Portnoy: “There’s something to be said for rising through the ranks at big brand places with big fan bases, especially on the revenue side, and learning how to do all that, but then learning how to be an AD when maybe there’s not as many cameras on you and you can make some mistakes. ... I’d like to see us pivot back a little bit to valuing actual athletic director experience.” One former G5 AD laments the shift in focus and tells Portnoy: “What’s happened at a very high level is the priority of winning the press conference, or strong brand affiliation, has somehow gone up in index value or criteria value. Being actually in the role and demonstrating the role and having success in that role, as crazy as it sounds, isn’t being given the full gravity we’re used to.” More. (link)

March Madness will remain at 68 teams for the 2026 season, according to NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt, who explains: “Expanding the tournament fields is no longer being contemplated for the 2026 men’s and women’s basketball championships. However, the committees will continue conversations on whether to recommend expanding to 72 or 76 teams in advance of the 2027 championships.” (link)

Using the House settlement's 10-year timeline as a guiding framework, CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello spoke with dozens of stakeholders to explore what the future of college athletics might look like by 2035. In the first of this four-part series, Marcello begins by examining whether, and to what extent, players will be wielding power by that point, and, if so, whether it will be through collective bargaining. Tennessee AD Danny White’s collective bargaining plan proposes establishing a national employment organization for football and men's basketball players but stops short of classifying student-athletes as employees. White: "We can draw a line of delineation as it relates to antitrust and Title IX between the two sports that profit, and all the rest of our sports that are so important to the college athletics model.” White goes on to acknowledge, however, that "if Congress is going to come in and give us antitrust protection and allow us to set up guardrails that are fair for everybody, with basically a pass on what the Sherman Act says, then we don't need collective bargaining. That could be a solution. I don't suggest that we go back to the way it used to be. I think it's great that the players are making money. … But the system needs organization and guardrails, and I'm not sure that the House settlement on its own is enough for us to put those things in place." Lots more. (link)

When asked about the future of private equity in college sports at Front Office Sports’ Huddle in the Hamptons event last week, RedBird Capital Partner Julia Wittlin replied: “That’s a controversial question. Look, I’m just going to say it: college sports is the new frontier… everyone is kidding themselves if they think that’s not the direction of travel.” Carlyle Group Partner Ben Fund added: “The dam will break at some point. I hope it’s soon because there’s a huge opportunity to generate returns and, I think, professionalize programs and invest in schools.” Fund also acknowledged that college sports is an area Carlyle has spent a lot of time thinking about: “I would say it’s an…academically interesting place to theoretically deploy capital. My return on time and legal spend is unbelievably low given we’ve deployed zero dollars and spent many millions of dollars trying to understand the opportunity set.” Fund added that many people “have spent a lot of time trying to figure it out. Nobody has yet.” (link)

Athletes.org met with 24 GMs from power conference schools across the country to “evolve a formal collective bargaining agreement that AO has built with input from member athletes. This CBA has been informed by multiple athletic directors, conference commissioners, legislators and now general managers.” Some highlights from the meeting: 100% of these GMs believe college sports is currently operating on top of a broken foundation that needs restructuring, including a reimagining of a revenue share payment structure between schools and athletes that consolidates the multiple pools of money a school can utilize to compensate an athlete (ie. Alston payments); 100% felt that transparency around payment amounts would be appropriate and helpful in a future with collective bargaining to stabilize the market; a majority of these stakeholders are in favor of a minimum spend/rev share floor to promote parity and competitive balance within college football; and 100% want to see performance based incentives that would reward play time, particularly for those who outperform their existing contract. The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel takes a look at the ACC’s plan to be more transparent with viewers about the officiating review process this football season, and ESPN Senior Director of Programming and Acquisitions Jeramy Michiaels says: “The ACC deserves a lot of praise here because they’re taking a calculated risk to be innovative with the television audience.” ACC Senior Assoc. Commissioner for Football Michael Strickland adds: “We really have nothing to hide. We’ve always been clear about who’s in the room and who’s authorized to get involved in officiating.” Teel notes the ACC’s new revenue-sharing model, which distributes 60% of television revenue based on football and men’s basketball viewership, compounds the importance of audience engagement, and Strickland explains: “Exposure’s always been important to us. Driving viewership’s always been important to us. Now more than ever before. So, we have a fiduciary responsibility to our membership to do everything we can to drive as great of an audience for as many of our games as possible.” While production logistics prevent airing replay deliberations from all football games, Teel wonders whether the practice might be expanded to include, for instance, men’s basketball, and Michiaels notes: “We’re a media company. We’re always pushing for access.” (link)

Prairie View A&M is discontinuing its men’s and women’s tennis programs, effective immediately. From PVAMU’s release: “For decades, PVAMU's tennis programs have fostered competitive excellence, character development, and academic achievement. This change in no way diminishes that proud legacy, however, the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics—including rising costs, facility demands, and the need for programmatic focus—necessitated tough decisions. This step allows the university to prioritize investment in core programs that serve the largest number of student-athletes and align with PVAMU's long-term strategic goals.” (link)

Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich reports the 30th eligibility lawsuit has been filed against the NCAA. “This one involves multiple athlete-plaintiffs, all seeking to play football this fall for West Virginia after transferring there this spring. The plaintiffs are Jimmori Robinson, Jeffrey Weimer, Tye Edwards, and Justin Harrington. Of note, this case is filed in the Northern District of West Virginia – the same court that held the transfer portal ‘year-in-residence’ rule to violate antitrust law. … The complaint is an intriguing read. It goes deeper into developing antitrust theories than others have, outlining ‘pride of place’ (arguing the rules to attend NCAA schools over JUCOs) and essential facilities theories. (We'll see if that matters).” (link); Full complaint. (link)

Hawaii School of Engineering Dean Brennon Morioka, who just finished up an eight-year stint as chair of the Aloha Stadium Authority, tells SBJ’s Bret McCormick that “we’ve never been this close to executing an actual contract” for the New Aloha Stadium and Entertainment District (NASED). The project would create a new 25,000-seat stadium surrounded by mixed-use development in Honolulu on the site of the 50-year-old Aloha Stadium, which remains standing but has been closed since 2020. The state has contributed $350M to the design-build stadium project, and Morioka says: “It’s not just a stadium, so it’s not just an infrastructure project, and it’s not just a development project. It’s a combination of the two and the two are very much tied together, so we have four or five different agreements that all get combined into the single contract. And when you make one change in one agreement, it has trickle-down effects in multiple agreements, so just making sure the consistency is there. That’s part of what’s taking us a little bit longer.” McCormick notes the priorities for this project have changed in recent years: “Morioka said the new venue needs to be better capable of hosting large-scale concerts (Aloha Stadium wasn’t). And much more importantly, there is an urgent housing shortage across Hawaii following the devastating 2023 Maui wildfires. According to a recent UH housing survey, rents for larger units (three or more bedrooms) are nearly double pre-fire levels, and ‘permanent housing availability remains a bottleneck.’ Converting Aloha Stadium’s parking lots into real estate including 4,500 housing units, the majority of which will be affordably priced, is a step toward easing that shortage.” (link)

Wagner has reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Education and will apologize to any female fencing student-athletes as well as any athlete who had to compete against a trans woman in the Wagner athletics program. Inside Higher Ed’s Katherine Knott notes the agreement comes “after a cisgender female athlete declined to compete against a trans woman on the Wagner fencing team at a USA Fencing competition hosted at the University of Maryland. The female fencer, a 31-year-old who took a knee, was disqualified from the match. The Wagner sophomore, Red Sullivan, competed on the men’s fencing team in her freshman year and then fenced on the women’s team this academic year after becoming medically eligible in fall 2024, Rolling Stone reported. Other media outlets have since reported that Sullivan has transferred from Wagner. … Under the agreement, Wagner…will publicly state that trans women can’t compete on women’s sports teams. The university also determined that no trans woman received any athletic records and recognitions while competing in women’s athletics.” (link)
