PAC Commissioner Joe Onderko sits down with D3sports.com’s Patrick Coleman to dive into the state of the PAC, streaming and visibility and more. Onderko: “We really want to be perceived as one of the really elite conferences in Division III. Elite can mean a lot of things, but what I mean by that is we are a conference that always has the student-athlete experience first. We try to do everything we do in a first-class and professional manner. We don't use the excuse that, well, we're only DIII. There's no reason we can't be as professional and do things as well as higher levels, despite the fact that we may not have the budgets they do. So all those things work together because I think in time, Pat, people want to be associated with an organization like that and I think we've seen that. I think one of the things we've been fortunate with the membership additions is they've all come to us.” With the addition of Saint Francis from DI, Onderko states they sought out the PAC because of the cultural fit, adding: “I think Father Malachi, the president there, said it best. He's like, we didn't leave Division I. If the old Division I was still there, we'd still be there. They've left us basically.” As one of the first movers in the streaming space, Onderko does not see the conference moving behind a paywall right now. Another key in the branding of the league is the presence of the PAC Sports Network, which is independently operated by a conference alumnus and Onderko adds: “I think they give us a platform that very few other Division III conferences have. […] I see the value that that has had for us, not just in recruitment and retention of athletes, which of course is the key point, but also just as far as brand perception and not even necessarily Western PA, but nationally. For us to give that up, we would have to really be overwhelmed, let's put it that way, to move away from that because we feel that has been so integral to a lot of the growth and the success that we've had over the past decade or two.” Tons more. Notable from DI: March Madness will remain at 68 teams for the 2026 season, according to NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt, who explains: “Expanding the tournament fields is no longer being contemplated for the 2026 men’s and women’s basketball championships. However, the committees will continue conversations on whether to recommend expanding to 72 or 76 teams in advance of the 2027 championships.” (link)

As athletic departments across the country adapt to the changing athletics and higher ed landscape, the amount of open jobs posted throughout the industry has nosedived over the last two years. To be specific, the total number of job openings listed throughout the overall marketplace in July 2025 has plummeted by 66.15% in DI, DII, DIII and NAIA combined when compared to July 2024. In DIII, listings have fallen by an astonishing 64.50% in the same time period. Broken down further, DIII job openings posted with the NCAA dipped by 10%. Despite this downward spiral, the CollegeSports.jobs site continues to thrive. To wit, overall job postings across College.town publications have increased by 20.32%. What does this mean? It means that if the conventional wisdom says to meet the customers where they are, you can find yours browsing the bustling streets of College.town. (link)

Hiram is facing $3-4M in cuts, according to President Robert Bohrer II, who adds: “It's not across the board. We have 25% (cuts) in non-revenue areas. And so areas like development, fundraising, and admission, we're not cutting budgets there. We're not cutting athletic budgets the same way, because we've used athletics to drive a lot of our enrollment. […] I would argue if we don't take these kind of financial responsibility steps then, yeah, that would be an existential threat to the college. And I think that a lot of colleges are faced with that right now, and I think the responsible thing to do is, as difficult as it might be, to look at these and realign your expenditures with your revenues.” (link)
