ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that the new NCAA governance model “gives the Big East a dedicated seat on the men’s basketball oversight committee – with weighted voting – which is the same as the A4 leagues.” (link)
|
CBS’ Matt Norlander notes that even though the Power 4 conferences now have 65% of weighted NCAA governance voting moving forward, the “new structure does not impact how rules are changed for championships access or revenue distribution. One hypothetical of how this news could affect tangible change in [college basketball]: I had an NCAA source suggest that a 38- or 40-game regular season could materialize in a few years b/c there's bubbling support from some high-majors to up Oct-March inventory. (Seeking more $ to pay players.) A bit more: The NCAA today reaffirmed its moratorium on not allowing any new schools into Division I until at least Feb. 2027, per sources.” (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello observes the media rights deals for the Big Ten (2030), Big 12 (2031) and SEC (2034) are set to expire – as are the March Madness and College Football Playoff contracts, both in 2032 – and asks: “If one conference's business decisions can shake the foundation of the sport, what happens when the entire marketplace is in play?” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips says: "People are going to have to be creative and innovative. I don't think anyone can just wait around and wait for the next television deal. You have to do some things in the interim." MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher subsequently notes: "We focus on the financial sustainability for anybody below the autonomy level, but I would suggest to you the financial sustainability for those in the autonomy level may be as much at risk or more at risk than anybody else in the system, given some of the factors that are involved in the (House) settlement. … They don't have to go to the max in [rev-share] benefits, but many of them are, and many of them appear to be going into debt to do that. That's why you're reading so much about people looking for all sorts of alternative funding sources, and that number is going to grow, and it's going to grow fairly rapidly." Marcello posits that expanding the College Football Playoff could spur the SEC to move from eight to nine conference games, and that additional inventory could allow for negotiations before the SEC's deal expires in 2034. One source says an additional conference game could fetch at least $50M more annually from ESPN. Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson explains further: "Theoretically, you can take that and go to your media partners early. If they're coming to me, I'm saying, sure, I'll listen and pay, but I want an extension. I'll add these additional events, I'll pay you more money. I'll also pay you more money for the out years on the extension, and what that does for the TV guys is the package doesn't get to the open market. It gives the Foxes and ESPNs of the world the ability to potentially alter, amend and extend their deals before anybody else even gets a chance at it." Thompson further advises that college football would be wise to move up its schedule into August to increase visibility and further avoid the NFL. Lots more. (link)

Clemson AD Graham Neff provided several updates to local reporters yesterday, including the latest on potential upgrades to Memorial Stadium. According to The State’s Chapel Fowler, Neff explained the school is going to "pick the pencil back up,” noting there is demand for additional premium space, clubs and suites. The Tigers also want to look at infrastructure, concourse, restroom and WiFi improvements. Neff adds there's "no timeline" on these changes, but the department will start some feasibility studies this fall. More from Neff via Fowler: The school is going to be "very active" in trying to find other events like the Savannah Bananas playing in Memorial Stadium in April. (link); According to the Post & Courier’s Jon Blau, Neff says he's looked at private equity possibilities "significantly,” adding: "Really well-read on what those opportunities are.” Neff adds that Clemson hasn't taken any "next steps,” but the "need to be competitive has never been greater." Neff also confirms Clemson is one of several schools that are "sun-setting" their NIL collective, 110 Society. Even though the College Sports Commission is allowing collective deals now, the focus is still commercial NIL deals and Clemson Ventures is the main hub for that. (link)

U.S. Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA) joins Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman’s SportsWise podcast to break down the SCORE Act and says the “initial draft was incredibly broad. It went far beyond NIL or fair play and eligibility rules. And even with some negotiated improvements, it’s still too broad. The lack of a sunset clause creates the grounds for the NCAA to do largely whatever they want into perpetuity. … If you sunset an antitrust exemption, it shapes the behavior of the NCAA, because they know they’ll have to come back to Congress. Without that, you risk handing them a blank check forever.” Trahan also contends that the “best way to characterize the SCORE Act is to say very clearly that the bill started out as fulfilling the wish list of the NCAA, the Power 4 conference commissioners, and by and large, it stayed that way. Everything that the NCAA has asked Congress to codify, designating college athletes as non-employees, shielding the NCAA from antitrust liability and preempting stronger state level protections – that was baked into the SCORE Act from the get-go.” On the topic of student-athlete employment, Trahan explains that “I've heard directly from athletes who don't want to be classified as employees. And I've heard from others who do. I've also heard from some who don't want that door just completely closed to them and not having any leverage down the road. But I think the throughline in all those conversations is I haven't heard a single athlete say that they feel like they have enough of a seat at the table in college sports and would turn down the opportunity afforded to them through a collective bargaining agreement, even if it's a novel form that doesn't include compensation. And I think the SCORE Act, it just ends that discussion entirely. I think that's a mistake.” Lots more in the full podcast. (link)

On3’s Talia Goodman polled 50 women’s hoops coaches (half HCs, half ACs) to gauge their interest in expanding March Madness and found that 61% prefer the NCAA Tournament remain at 68 while 39% would like to see the field expand. Seton Hall HC Tony Bozzella: “I don’t know why it wouldn’t be 100% wanting to expand the tournament if you’re a coach. Why wouldn’t we want to give ourselves as many opportunities to play in the NCAA Tournament, if it’s possible? This is as coaches, not as fans. As a fan, you do worry about it getting watered down or too many preliminary games. As a coach, my job is to get my team to an NCAA Tournament.” TCU HC Mark Campbell adds: “I would lean towards expanding the tournament. After being at the mid-major level, to earn an at-large bid into March Madness is almost impossible. Your margin for error is close to zero. I don’t know if I’d expand to 72 or 76, but I do think it should be expanded to allow a little more opportunity.” Louisville HC Jeff Walz explains why he wants to keep it at 68. “If we expand, does it water it down? There’s always going to be somebody, whether it’s the 73rd or 77th team that’s unhappy – and just because the men decide something doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the best thing for us. I like our tournament where it is now.” USC HC Lindsay Gottlieb also weighs in: “I don’t have a clear answer on it. … I think if I had to make a decision, I’d say why mess with it? I understand that things got to where they are now by making changes. … I don’t think it would be bad if at the end of the day, they added four teams, but I like things the way they are.” (link)

Ohio State is introducing several new traditions for the 2025 football season, including a pregame Victory Bell ringer. The Victory Bell will now sound before the team takes the field and be rung by those with OSU ties. Buckeyes legend Archie Griffin will serve as the first pregame Victory Bell ringer before the Buckeyes’ season opener against Texas. OSU is also introducing THE Towel, a scarlet and gray towel that fans will be encouraged to wave to show their support. Approximately 100K towels will be distributed to fans for free at the OSU-Texas matchup. Also new this year, according to Eleven Warriors’ Dan Hope: “Brutus Buckeye will have ‘a unique and iconic entrance’ each week… while fans will be awarded a virtual Buckeye Leaf each time the opposing offense commits a false start or calls a timeout due to crowd noise. Ohio State will have a unified student section this year as Block O North is being moved to the other side of the stadium to join Block O South, creating a larger and louder student section in the south end zone. Ohio State will have fewer sponsor presentations during media timeouts this season, and the in-game presentations that do take place will utilize the entrance ramp rather than taking place on the game field. Content displayed on the video boards at the Shoe will be reformatted to ‘what Buckeye fans want: real-time stats, scores, and replays, with a presentation style that feels distinctly Ohio State.’” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork at the changes in store at Ohio Stadium this season, as he explains: “I think it’s just an evolution of college sports, right? How do we create a home field advantage? And then I think people want to be entertained. And people see these other games that are happening around the country. So I think it’s a combination of all of it. Part of it is, look, we need some new technology. So we need a new sound system. We need a new ribbon board, LED board. That’s coming into the future. So part of that was gearing up and having the right platform to be ready for that new technology. So it’s just a combination of a lot of things. A lot of people that were at the Oregon game [at Oregon] remember that game. And they’re like, ‘Oh, wow, that’s what it can be.’ People remember the Tennessee game. So it really started, I think for me, it started after the first couple games where I saw that there was an opportunity here.” Bjork also estimates the more comprehensive technological upgrades could be ready for the 2026 or 2027 season. In discussing other facilities projects, Bjork notes the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex and the new ice hockey arena are atop the to-do list. Both have been in the works for years, and he wants to make them a reality soon. “There’s always something. You’re always evolving. Look, we know we’re sitting here in the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex. We know that this is on the list. How do we do it? How do we fund it? We’re in kind of a quiet phase. We’re talking to donors about this project. So we’ve got the Woody Hayes project on the list.” (link)

Northern Illinois’ Huskie Athletic Fund reached fundraising levels “not seen in over a decade” in FY25. Unrestricted giving rose by 38%, the number of donors giving unrestricted dollars grew by 285%, overall donor participation increased by 64%, total dollars raised across NIU Athletics increased by 18%, and Huskies Invest surpassed the $1M mark for the fourth consecutive year. In addition, the Huskie Athletic Fund secured a $3.45M estate gift, the largest gift in department history. Sport-specific giving also reached an all-time high of $702,843. All told, the Huskies raised more than $5.3M, which is 48% higher than the previous high in 2012. (link)

The NFL’s 10% stake in ESPN is believed to be between $2.5B and $3B, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint and Isabella Simonetti, who note neither ESPN nor the NFL would disclose financial details. Flint and Simonetti also note if the deal passes regulatory muster, Disney’s stake in ESPN will drop to 72% from 80% while minority owner Hearst will go to 18% from 20%. Meanwhile, Guggenheim Securities analyst Michael Morris believes the NFL entering into such a partnership with one of its biggest rightsholders might become a point of concern for its other media partners. “The league being a part owner in one of its distribution partners should raise the question of whether that entity is getting favorable treatment relative to other networks and streamers that air games. Both NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Disney CEO Bob Iger downplayed those concerns with Goodell insisting the league’s relationships with its other media partners will ‘continue to flourish.’” Morris also observes the following as it relates to the deal itself: “Somebody watching RedZone is arguably not watching the live game, so there is a question as to whether that network is additive to overall viewing or cannibalistic to full-game audience.” (link)

Fox Corp CEO Lachlan Murdoch announced a launch date of August 21 for the Fox One streaming service and a price of $19.99 a month. All existing Fox cable subscribers will have access to Fox One, which will include the totality of Fox content. Murdoch: “We have long said that we aspire to engage with our viewers, wherever suits them best. The traditional cable bundle remains our favorite distribution channel, as we believe it continues to provide exceptional value to consumers.” Fox One, Murdoch adds, aims for “another important audience segment, those wanting a paid, targeted offering encompassing all Fox brands.” (link)

NCAA 2.0 (or is it 3.0? 4.0?)…
➤ The DI Board of Directors approved a proposal from the Decision-Making Working Group that “simplifies the governance structure for the division, increases student-athlete representation throughout all levels of decision-making, and provides greater authority to sport-specific committees over rules that impact their respective sports. The changes are expected to be phased in over the coming months, starting September 1.” As circulated previously, the new structure will comprise 30 Division I committees, including 19 committees that govern each Division I championship sport, a 32% reduction in the total number of Division I committees. Student-athletes will now have voting seats on almost every committee, which is an increase of 40 total seats, doubling the total number of student-athlete seats. NCAA President Charlie Baker: "Today's changes were carefully developed by student-athlete leaders and representatives from all subgroups to enable faster decisions and double student-athlete representation for DI, while ensuring access to championships and funding streams remain consistent for every school in the division. From unprecedented financial benefits to health and academic guarantees, the NCAA is making changes to do more for student-athletes, and today's changes protect what brings DI together and updates the decision-making to meet this new era." The board also adopted a resolution specifying that for a five-year period no changes can be made to membership requirements for existing DI schools and conferences. (link)
➤ The Board of Directors on Tuesday also introduced a proposal that would create three additional units in both the Men's and Women's Basketball Performance Funds. If the measure is adopted by member schools and conferences, each team participating in a championship game would receive one additional unit, and the national champions would receive the final unit. When combined with the recently approved women's basketball distribution funds, the NCAA would distribute more than $191M in new revenue distributions to DI members over the next seven years, starting in 2026. North Carolina AD/Men’s Basketball Committee Chair Bubba Cunningham: "Rewarding teams and the conferences they represent for wins they earn on the biggest of stages has always seemed like a sensible thing to do. With each conference annually receiving north of $300K per unit over a six-year period, and with three additional units up for grabs for competing in and winning the national championship game, once fully implemented, roughly $6M will be distributed on an annual basis to the leagues whose teams win games at the Men's Final Four. This is a positive step in further supporting conferences, institutions and student-athletes." (link)

Washington State AD Anne McCoy tells ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura that WSU and Oregon State are starting to feel like they’re finally starting to stabilize with the reformation of the Pac-12. “We were at some events this last week talking with people, and they were like, 'Well, what's the main difference between this year and last year or the year prior?’ And the answer is firm ground. It feels like we have firm ground: something that we can envision, we can wrap our minds around. It's something that will be happening, not something that we hope happens." Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould says this year "is a balance. We still have obligations and services to provide to Oregon State and Washington State, but we're also building something." With a legal dispute between the Pac-12 and Mountain West ongoing, Bonagura reports that “privately, there is a shared sentiment that both conferences want the litigation behind them, but for these schools and these conferences, the amount of money in play is significant. Both sides feel strongly in their legal position and now appear ready to roll the dice at trial.” For her part, Gould remarks: "I look forward to that day [when the litigation is over]. We've all got a lot of work to do, and I look forward to that getting resolved so we can move forward.” While Gould declined to discuss specific potential expansion targets, she acknowledges the league remains open to adding schools if they match the conference's long-term goals. "If we sit right where we are, we're good with that. If there are other growth opportunities, that's great, we'll consider them against our criteria and deal with that on a case-by-case basis and absolutely have a long-term strategy in terms of what that should look like." The Athletic’s Sam Khan Jr. sheds more light on Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell’s significant financial investments in the Red Raiders’ player acquisition strategy and GM James Blanchard notes: “Cody came in and said, in a professional way, that we had an open checkbook. Telling that to a personnel guy is like telling a six-year-old, ‘Here’s my platinum credit card, go get whatever you want.’” When the winter transfer portal window opened in December, Blanchard, accordingly ran up a “colossal tab,” according to Khan, who notes: “When the dust settled, Texas Tech spent more than $12M — or almost as much revenue as some Power 4 programs will share with their entire roster — on 21 [football] transfers. The total roster budget for the 2025 Texas Tech football team? Roughly $25M, Blanchard said, which surpasses the $20M the (Ohio State) spent en route to last season’s national title. It was part of Texas Tech’s athletic department-wide effort to capitalize on the final months of unlimited NIL spending before capped revenue sharing kicked in. And spend the Red Raiders did, raising $55M to utilize on player compensation via NIL and revenue sharing across its 17 sports for the 2025-26 athletic season, according to Campbell. Of that, roughly $35M was paid out before July 1, when the cap — roughly $20.5M, a result of the House v. NCAA settlement — officially took effect.” In his own words, Campbell says: “People can sit around and get mad about the state of affairs. They can criticize the coaches. They can criticize the leadership. They can be unhappy about the position we’re in or they can go do something about it. I felt like I was in a position to do something about it. So I said that I would and I did.” (link)

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart acknowledges that "everyone is in the weeds” as the revenue-sharing era begins in earnest, adding: “I've been in the middle of those conversations for 10 months, 12 months, and it's a lot. It is an absolute lot." That said, Barnhart emphasizes the need for everyone to pull in the same direction: "To sit here and be critical of the system that's only been in place for four weeks [is] really, really difficult. … We've got to find a way through it and just gently walk through this thing and let it smooth itself out. There's a lot of really good people working at this thing, and I'm thankful for that. We've got a lot of folks trying hard. … We need everyone to say, 'OK, we're all going to be in the same space to start with.’ I don't think we can get to the space you're talking about if we don't have that to begin with. We're going to have to find some continuity in those conversations." (link)

Vanderbilt AD Candice Lee joins the Intangible Podcast to discuss her path to the AD role and her vision for the Commodores future and explains she is “looking for people who want Vanderbilt. I’m listening very closely when I’m interviewing coaches and when people say, ‘Well, you know, I just want to accept the challenge,’ and it’s already this sort of woe is me. …. No, no, no, I want us to be realistic about where we are in that moment in said program, but you’ve got to view this as an opportunity. And if all you see is impediments, it’s not going to be the job for you. You may see these opportunities where we’ve got to be creative and innovative and we’ve got to remove roadblocks, and that’s my job is to clear a path and make sure you have the resources that you need. But you’ve got to want Vanderbilt, you’ve got to respect Vanderbilt and the opportunity that is brewing here. You’ve got to want that. Because if I have to convince you in the interview, then on those tough days I’m going to have to come get you out of bed. You’re not going to be committed. So I am looking for people who don’t have to be convinced.” Lee also explains that to her the Vanderbilt way is “choosing the hard way with no shortcuts and when you get to the other side, understanding – that’s why I really do love the SEC tagline ‘It just means more’ – because when you win at Vanderbilt…it does mean more. These young people, they are going to class in person every day. They ain’t on Zoom, and that’s no shade [to other institutions]. … Our coaches are managing to field incredible rosters with the very high admissions standards that we’re proud of.” (link)

Central Michigan raised a record $10.2M during FY25 and reports that its social media channels on average have grown at least 30% in the last two-and-a-half years. Specifically, the Chippewas’ football X account has grown by 40% during that time, while the football team’s Instagram account grew by 60%. In addition, the men's basketball X and Instagram accounts doubled during that period. Also, CMU set a department record for ticket office revenue in FY25 thanks to an increase of 30.6% YoY and 4.6% growth over the previous record in 2016-17. Student attendance grew by 26% at football games and by 22% at men's basketball contests. (link)

South Dakota raised $14.44M during FY25, good for a YoY increase of more than 400%. Of that total, $5.7M was cash received. Both numbers sit second-best in USD Athletics history and are the highest outside of the department being in a capital campaign. The Howling Pack also saw a record year between direct donations and its annual events. The Howling Pack fund brought in over $1M in direct donations and another $1.1M between the Sanford Coyote Golf Tour and the Calling All Coyotes auction. (link)
