The Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen weighs in on what Louisiana Monroe AD John Hartwell’s sudden resignation could mean for the school and the Sun Belt moving forward. Despite lagging tens of millions of dollars behind many of its league peers with the smallest FBS budget at $19.1 million, Mettlen writes that Hartwell had embraced the challenges with the Warhawks and had things moving steadily in the right direction. However, some Sun Belt ADs reportedly heard that ULM President Carrie Castille had asked for huge athletics budget cuts and a revised budget. Per Mettlen, if ULM was serious about continuing its forward momentum, finding a way to work with Hartwell to at least maintain the department’s current support level was vital, and that slashing an “already barebones budget” would make producing a viable Sun Belt program difficult further weakening the “conference’s bottom dweller” and the league in the process. Following Hartwell’s resignation, Castille commented in a press release that her “commitment to ULM Athletics and the Sun Belt Conference is unwavering.” People in the ULM community that believed the school wouldn’t drop down to FCS suddenly aren’t so sure, however, with one Sun Belt AD telling Mettlen that “ULM was a shell of an FBS program and he was having a hard time picturing the Warhawks at that level a few years from now.” (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello continues his examination of the future of college sports by zooming in on mid-majors’ place. For some, the anxiety is only growing, especially since the Power 4 now wields 65% of the voting power. Former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby posits that “[mid-majors] have no shot of finding $5M to throw at football, much less $20.5M.” That said, MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher notes that "everybody fixates really, really quickly on the differences in resources. And I keep going back to the fact there's always been differences in resources. Now we've added some different layers to it, obviously, with the additional benefits that can be provided beyond grant of aid, and certainly NIL, but I don't know how much of it is really changing." Private equity is often brought up as a possible solution to close the resource gap, and American Commissioner Tim Pernetti tells Marcello: "Everybody's impression of this is it's about money. Certainly, it's about access to capital, but I'm looking for the right partner, because the capital is great, but if you don't have a partner that actually can get in the boat with you and help you grow the business, the capital is less meaningful.” Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez shares her overall perspective: "We want to be able to let the top of the ecosystem thrive, but what I hope doesn't happen is we lose the bottom. I think there's a way, and I'm talking about the entirety – 300+ schools, top to bottom, not just the 10 FBS conferences – that we can exist in a world where there's still access for everyone, but that the bottom doesn't hold the top back." Horizon League Commissioner Julie Roe Lach sits down for The Commissioner’s Corner as part of the Golden Hour to touch on a number of topics including her upcoming visits with the league’s student-athletes, an update on media rights and the league’s basketball championships, how league governance works alongside stakeholders, takeaways from her time spent with Women Leaders and a membership update on Northern Illinois joining the conference. On the subject of media rights: “We have some important, and I think innovative negotiations underway. ESPN has been such a longtime, fantastic media rights partner for us. Our current contract ends at the end of this upcoming year, in June of 26, so, naturally, that window’s opened and we’re having some really substantive, thoughtful conversations. We’re exploring a lot of different issues relative to our agreement in terms of looking at our basketball championship dates, but more importantly, the number of games on ESPN+, linear windows, just things that really matter because at the end of the day, we’re trying to drive exposure for our student-athletes on our campuses. So, with that as really the guiding principles, conversations are going well. … I’m excited about the direction we’re heading.” More from Roe Lach. (link)

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock tells The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel that “we absolutely need to refine the message and refocus and re-center back to the Hokie Club” as the next iteration of college sports takes shape. “That’s our bread and butter. That’s the best way for any Hokie fan, alumni, donor to get involved.” As for what role the collectives will play, Babcock explains: “In past years, we’ve had so much mixed messaging. While Triumph and the Hokie Way will still exist, if there is true fair range and compensation in NIL, those dollar figures should become a little more reasonable than they have been. But this $20.5M is a pretty big number.” Teel notes the Hokies are adding 45 grants-in-aid this academic year at a cost of $2M, increasing the total athletics scholarship bill to more than $22M. Further, all 22 Hokies programs except volleyball and women’s tennis are receiving rev share and/or enhanced scholarship funding. The rev share is limited to football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball, but Babcock hopes to provide more scholarships in future years for every Olympic sports program. “We need broad-based money (from the Hokie Club) that we can use for everything. … Unrestricted dollars are an athletic director’s best friend.” (link)

Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene was asked directly this week if Pitt planned to use the full revenue-sharing cap and whether football would be allotted 75%. While he didn’t offer specifics, Greene remarked that the Panthers aim to be nationally competitive and that football would “get what it needs.” When asked about the split with other sports, he said: “We are taking a strategic approach, like everybody else in the country, to identify the sports who have opportunities to be nationally competitive, and invest in those. Then making sure that we're strategically planning to invest in our other sports in other ways that make sure they're competitive, as well.” Greene also commented on the ACC’s new formula for revenue distribution: “It definitely sparks a conversation about philosophy and about what's important. There's money, there's value, there's wins, and trying to strategize and thread needles on how to achieve, check boxes and all those things. There's definitely going to be some analysis. There already has been analysis on our scheduling years. We have to determine what we want to do and how we want to manage it.” (link)

The Fort Collins Coloradoan’s Kevin Lytle has the takeaways from Colorado State AD John Weber’s recent media scrum. Lytle, on the subject of revenue sharing, noted CSU won’t be hitting the cap and that Weber declined to share how much money CSU intends to spend this year on player payments. Weber: “The long-term goal for us is to maximize the rev-share cap. It’s going to take sponsorships, it’s going to take naming rights, it’s going to take ticket sales, it’s going to take engagement with our donors to figure out ways to make that happen. Our goal that we openly talk about is how do we become the first non-A4 to get to that rev-share cap? It’s going to take us a while to get there, but the opportunity, I think, is real and I’m excited to see us grow. … Collegiate athletics has always been a business, but I assure you the business focus on collegiate athletics has never been as high as it is now. That’s something that we talk about daily, relative to all the different ways we can generate additional revenue for this department.” (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown takes a look at how FBS newcomer Delaware prepped for the recent release of EA Sports College Football 26, noting that with their first-time inclusion in the game, the Blue Hens were presented with an opportunity to gain exposure with tens of thousands of people that held no previous tie to the university or its football program. Interim AD Jordan Skolnick: “When I first got here, people used to tell me about how Delaware was a sleeping giant, which I knew was supposed to be a compliment. But then it started to frustrate me, because we want the world to understand how special this place is. We want people to know about us. … We saw the game as an excellent engagement opportunity. We want to reach new and younger audiences.” Delaware’s big idea to take advantage? The Delaware Football Dynasty Challenge, a contest that “encouraged gamers from all over the country to launch a dynasty as the Blue Hens. All you had to do was share a video of you winning the national title as Delaware, and you would be entered in a contest to win a VIP gameday experience at Delaware Stadium, including on-field and club access for a home game of your choice, plus a Blue Hen Coaches Gear Prize Pack.” According to Skolnick, more than 200 people from over 40 different states have entered the contest, including far-from-Delaware locales such as Oregon, Idaho, Arizona and Arkansas. The program has also leaned into highlighting fans, student-athletes and other content creators experiences in the game while utilizing Delaware, with staffers noting how meaningful it’s been for Blue Hens players to be included in the game. Courthouse News Service’s Alan Riquelmy reports that members of the Fresno State women’s lacrosse team reached a Wednesday settlement with the school over a 2021 Title IX case stemming from accusations that Fresno State treated its players worse than other sports teams. The suit originally “argued that the college and its board of trustees denied it equal opportunities for athletic financial aid and treatment, including eliminating the team at the end of the 2020-21 academic year, along with its men’s tennis and wrestling teams” with Riquelmy highlighting that “the lacrosse team faced worse treatment once its elimination became certain. The team pointed to its exclusion from athletic facilities and its locker room. Members couldn’t enter the locker room to collect their personal items.” No settlement details were revealed and the plaintiffs are expected to file a motion for preliminary approval by the end of the month. From a football standpoint, ESPN would also feature Southland programs in two additional FCS Kickoff weekend games over the next six years and would commit to supporting production hardware requests from league members on a case-by-case basis. CollegeAD shares the details of Marshall AD Gerald Harrison’s five-year contract that runs through August 15, 2030. Harrison will earn $375K annually, and Marshall will cover the $75K buyout that is owed to Austin Peay. He can also earn up to $10K annually in academic-related bonuses, $20K annually in fundraising-related bonuses and $65K in athletic-related bonuses. Should Marshall part ways with Harrison without cause in the first year of the contract, he would be owed a $1.875M buyout. That figure falls to $1.5M, $1.125M, $750K and $375K each year, respectively. Any buyout payment would be due within 30 days of termination. The same buyout structure is in place for Harrison should he step down. (link)

More from Ohio State AD Ross Bjork, who explains OSU is adhering to the CSC’s “valid business purpose” NIL guidelines through the Buckeye Sports Group; however, he notes the school is eager for clearer rules and effective enforcement. “We have all kinds of opportunities in the business world that meet valid business purpose, range of compensation. So we're deploying those things right now. We were ready to pivot if we needed to, but in a lot of ways, we didn't have to. That's why we created Buckeye Sports Group. We're talking to sponsors, we're talking to donors. Our collectives are still engaged from a leadership and a structure standpoint. So we have a lot of things in place to adapt to what was said last week. But also, we're still waiting on the rules to be published. We're still waiting on what does cap circumvention mean? What can and can't you do with high school prospects? Because many people have different interpretations of that world, right? … Hopefully, we'll have some clarity this week. That's what we've been told. But we really need a whole messaging campaign to come out of the College Sports Commission.” Bjork also reiterates the need for a federal standard: “We still have state-by-state laws that are on the books that may conflict with the House case outcome. The only place that can solve that is the federal government. Like it or not, we need federal legislation. In order to really, really codify college athletics and have uniform standards in all 50 states, we need a federal law to be implemented.” (link)

Hawaii AD Matt Elliott has now spent a month on the job and tells Hawaii News Now that “before I even get to long-term, I would say our focus is on creating an amazing student athletic experience and be successful this fall and then carry that into the winter and the spring. To me this is a story about momentum, this is going to be a story about growth.” As it relates to transitioning the majority of teams to the Mountain West, Elliott explains: “One of our major jobs is to take away distractions, take away the off-the-field things so that UH student-athletes and coaches can really focus on your preparation for your competition. I’m going to say this all the time, I want us and I believe we can be the marquee program in any conference that we enter, then OK, how do we do that?” Elliott on the NIL/rev-share approach: “For us it’s pretty straightforward. We can say to all of the external entities that were working on NIL deals in the past that we’re going to streamline this, we’re going to put revenue sharing through the institution. Have direct relationships with our students, which allows our coaches to be very involved in the decision making and helping them build their rosters in a way that they think they can be successful.” (link)

A new national survey of 1,500 U.S. adults conducted by Elon and the Knight Commission reveals a “divided and often uncertain public about the path forward for college sports.” The survey found no public consensus on the organization or entity that should be primarily responsible for regulating the business of college sports. The NCAA remains the top choice, but with only 35% support. The next most popular option was “governing bodies that regulate specific sports” (25%), followed by athletics conferences (10%), state governments (9%) and the federal government (6%), while 15% chose none of these. Respondents were also skeptical or unsure that Congress should enact legislation to regulate college sports with just 36% supporting the creation of a federal law to supersede state laws and allow the NCAA to enact uniform, nationwide rules. On that front, 26% were opposed and 39% were unsure. Notably, support for new federal legislation was much higher among those respondents who identified as being interested in college sports, with 54% favoring national laws compared with 24% who opposed such legislation. Also from the survey: 81% said it was extremely or very important for college athletes to be enrolled as full-time students taking classes at their institution. 81% viewed athlete graduation as extremely or very important. 74% strongly supported the existing rule requiring teams to be on track to graduate at least half their athletes to remain eligible for postseason competition. Lots more. (link)

On3’s Pete Nakos reports on the figures some of this year’s football student-athletes are making and notes the highest-paid player on this year’s Texas Tech reportedly $28M roster is Stanford transfer EDGE David Bailey, whose deal is north of $2M. Additionally, per Nakos: Florida State QB Thomas Castellanos, who transferred from Boston College, is expected to make more than $800K; Oklahoma QB John Mateer’s deal will be between $2.5M and $3M; Louisville QB Miller Moss, a transfer from USC, is expected to make more than $1.5M; and North Carolina QB Gio Lopez is expected to bring home upwards of $1M after transferring from South Alabama. Nakos also confirms that Michigan QB Bryce Underwood will make $10M to $12M over four years and will be the highest-paid player on this year’s roster, while Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith is expected to make $4M to $5M. SB Nation’s Mitchell Northam checks in with Texas Tech star softball pitcher NiJaree Canady on juggling NIL deals, battling expectations and future ambitions heading into her final season in Lubbock. Having already made waves after receiving an NIL deal worth more than $1M in 2024-25, Canady has agreed to another $1M-plus deal for the upcoming campaign with the Red Raiders-focused Matador Club Collective, while simultaneously becoming a brand ambassador for Venmo. As part of those deals, Canady is quick to credit TTU and her management team for dealing with any recent hurdles surrounding the House settlement and the new NIL Go clearinghouse. Canady: “I’ve started dealing with it just a little bit. I’m confident in my team, and I’m confident with Texas Tech. I’m not worried about the future, and I feel like Texas Tech is going to always take care of its student athletes.” More from Northam. (link)

“If you think about it for half a second, McAfee and Portnoy should have become the faces of college football broadcasts years ago,” according to Puck’s Julia Alexander, in reference to the eponymous host of the Pat McAfee Show and Barstool Founder Dave Portnoy’s new role with Fox. “Both built digital empires on an irreverent approach to sports coverage and unwavering aggressiveness in the face of controversy – catnip for college kids tailgating before games. The cult of personality drives attention as traditional TV production values are replaced by sheer authenticity (in all its sleeveless splendor and bawdy humor). These days, attention converts into paying subscribers, and networks like ESPN and Fox have little choice but to give people what they want.” So far, the strategy is paying off for ESPN, as Alexander notes McAfee’s presence last year “delivered the best ratings in GameDay’s in nearly 40 years on air, with viewership in the coveted 18-24 demographic up 14% year over year.” Meanwhile, given college football’s record viewership numbers last year, Alexander points out McAfee’s moment arrives as college football is growing. “In short, college football is big—and getting closer to NFL-level big. If ESPN can convert a portion of those viewers into paying subscribers for its forthcoming streaming app, it may have a sustainable business on its hands. The same goes for Fox. Portnoy’s Barstool Sports YouTube channel netted 40M views in July, per Social Blade. That should convert to followership for Fox One.” There is another side to that equation, however, in which the best content creators “have all the leverage.” Hence, McAfee’s non-exclusive deal with ESPN. “Ditto Stephen A. Smith.” More. (link)

Disney CEO Bob Iger confirms the company is looking to make sporting events on other networks available via the new ESPN DTC app: “Yes, we believe there may be opportunities for us to bundle other companies’ sports offerings. We’ve actually had discussions with other companies to do just that. Nothing to report on that. But obviously, we’re not only interested in growing engagement and growing our own [subscriptions], but we’re interested in serving consumers better as well. … As a devoted sports fan, I often have to work to find what platform sports are on. If we can help consumers in that regard, we’re certainly going to try.” (link)
