The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman digs into the Big Ten’s exploration of private equity partnerships & reports talks on whether to partner with an outside firm remain under discussion. Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti: “Our membership has made clear that modernizing how conference offices work and function on behalf of their members needs to change as we get into this next world. We started this process more than a year ago to just evaluate the way we do everything. What things can we do that we see that the NBA does really well in the central office or MLB or the NFL? Some of the things they do we’ll never do because they don’t apply to college sports. That’s totally fine. But what can we do? Is there a strategic partner, a capital partner, that would help you get there faster, more efficiently, better, stronger? I’m not sure the answer to that yet, but the process of doing it is ongoing.” Ohio State AD Ross Bjork: “It may be impossible because you’re truly a public entity. We’re owned by the state of Ohio. So, there are lots of complications in terms of the infusion of this money. But I do think we have an obligation to look at creative ways (to generate revenue). At this point, there would be more questions than answers, and I think that’s why you probably have seen nobody do it yet at the institutional level.” Illinois AD Josh Whitman: “I do think that evaluating opportunities for outside capital, whether it’s at the institutional level or the conference level, everybody’s having those conversations. I don’t know if any of them will ultimately come to fruition, come across the finish line, but we’re at a point now where the business of college athletics is growing.” Iowa SVP for Finance and Operations Rod Lehnertz also chimes in: “It’s a conference matter, not only for our athletic directors, but our presidents. There’s no definition at this point that would tell us we have to go right, left or indifferent. We’re still seeing a lot of this unfold.” (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello continues his examination of the post-House era by taking a look at the possibility of a football super league and whether its formation is inevitable. Marcello notes the financial strain of sharing revenue with athletes, internal tensions among schools and conferences and ongoing disputes over postseason formats and rulemaking have added a sense of urgency to the conversation. Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez: "That's what the super league and private equity have glommed on to, the inefficiency in our current system. Individual contracts, conferences negotiating different contracts that are competitive with each other. Under one umbrella, you would be working collectively. … But that would require an antitrust exemption.” While news about a super league’s possible formation has slowed, Marcello reports that “several ACC schools remain in contact with Smash Capital. One high-ranking power conference exec tells Marcello: "It's on everyone's mind, but everyone in the industry views that coming from someone else on the outside. There's no one really working on it who is in college football right now other than there's an existential threat of the Big Ten and SEC picking up their ball and saying, 'It's just us.'" Meanwhile, a super league that excludes half the FBS is likely to generate scrutiny from federal lawmakers, as Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes explains: "You can't ambush the government. That's the thing that's going to stop this. I've always maintained that one of the risks in investing in college sports is you're dealing with all the peculiarities of one of the most important qualitative assets in every state's portfolio – the state universities and athletic departments, plus the federal government. Our system is designed for them not to align so you can have a diversity of things for people. That's the framework." More. (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown visits with ASUN Commissioner Jeff Bacon in an attempt to gain a better understanding of the next steps ahead in the unique partnership between the ASUN and UAC that allows the leagues to function as independent conferences while also permitting the potential combination of some operational facets. As far as starting the process of attempting to work out the business organization side of the partnership, including a constitution and bylaw system, with no real peer template to work from, Bacon remarks: “You gotta start with the foundation. … There’s no template, but that’s also exciting. It means that we get to decide things for ourselves. … We have to think structurally, from a membership perspective, about where we want to be and what we want to look like.” One of the ideas that Bacon and the ASUN are interested in is the potential sharing of infrastructure resources, such as communication and broadcast services departments, and media rights/championship-event MMR to lessen overhead and logistical costs enough to still provide meaningful value. Bacon: “Maybe we're looking at one media rights deal for both conferences, and it makes the most sense to have a comprehensive package all across the board. Maybe what's better for one conference is one media rights package, and what's better for the other is a different one. We have that flexibility now, right? And without having to convince anybody one way or the other, we can go out to that market and take a look at it in a really different and unique way.” Lots more. (link)

More from Clemson AD Graham Neff’s time with the media yesterday from The Post & Courier’s Jon Blau. On the subject of collective bargaining and if CSC "guardrails" would hold up while facing the threat of more legal challenges, Blau noted that while Neff wasn’t explicitly jumping on the CBA bandwagon, he doesn’t believe that the House settlement and revenue sharing will be the last piece of the puzzle. Neff: “At the end of the day, I think it’s the structure piece where there's just some real certainty around what our operations are — again, not guardrails. Certainty, meaning, OK, are we in a better spot from a legal standpoint, a political standpoint? If that answer is collective bargaining, if that means employment, if that means federal legislation or some combination of that, I think the optionality that exists is significant.” Talking about the potential of private equity investment in collegiate athletics, Neff noted that he conducted significant research on the topic even if outside funding isn’t viewed as a near-term solution. Neff: “Really well-read on what those opportunities are. We’re rather connected in that space. We haven't taken any next steps, or any steps of significance, as it relates to external funding or private equity or private capital. Certainly there's conferences and other schools that are having those type of conversations, too. At this point, it's incumbent on us to, again, change the size of the coin. Raise revenues, manage expenses. … What that looks like down the road … three to five years? Gosh, I don't know. But I do feel really equipped that we're set to be strategic on what that could look like. [The] need to be competitive has never been greater.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that the new NCAA governance model “gives the Big East a dedicated seat on the men’s basketball oversight committee – with weighted voting – which is the same as the A4 leagues.” (link)
|
CBS’ Matt Norlander notes that even though the Power 4 conferences now have 65% of weighted NCAA governance voting moving forward, the “new structure does not impact how rules are changed for championships access or revenue distribution. One hypothetical of how this news could affect tangible change in [college basketball]: I had an NCAA source suggest that a 38- or 40-game regular season could materialize in a few years b/c there's bubbling support from some high-majors to up Oct-March inventory. (Seeking more $ to pay players.) A bit more: The NCAA today reaffirmed its moratorium on not allowing any new schools into Division I until at least Feb. 2027, per sources.” (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello observes the media rights deals for the Big Ten (2030), Big 12 (2031) and SEC (2034) are set to expire – as are the March Madness and College Football Playoff contracts, both in 2032 – and asks: “If one conference's business decisions can shake the foundation of the sport, what happens when the entire marketplace is in play?” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips says: "People are going to have to be creative and innovative. I don't think anyone can just wait around and wait for the next television deal. You have to do some things in the interim." MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher subsequently notes: "We focus on the financial sustainability for anybody below the autonomy level, but I would suggest to you the financial sustainability for those in the autonomy level may be as much at risk or more at risk than anybody else in the system, given some of the factors that are involved in the (House) settlement. … They don't have to go to the max in [rev-share] benefits, but many of them are, and many of them appear to be going into debt to do that. That's why you're reading so much about people looking for all sorts of alternative funding sources, and that number is going to grow, and it's going to grow fairly rapidly." Marcello posits that expanding the College Football Playoff could spur the SEC to move from eight to nine conference games, and that additional inventory could allow for negotiations before the SEC's deal expires in 2034. One source says an additional conference game could fetch at least $50M more annually from ESPN. Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson explains further: "Theoretically, you can take that and go to your media partners early. If they're coming to me, I'm saying, sure, I'll listen and pay, but I want an extension. I'll add these additional events, I'll pay you more money. I'll also pay you more money for the out years on the extension, and what that does for the TV guys is the package doesn't get to the open market. It gives the Foxes and ESPNs of the world the ability to potentially alter, amend and extend their deals before anybody else even gets a chance at it." Thompson further advises that college football would be wise to move up its schedule into August to increase visibility and further avoid the NFL. Lots more. (link)

Clemson AD Graham Neff provided several updates to local reporters yesterday, including the latest on potential upgrades to Memorial Stadium. According to The State’s Chapel Fowler, Neff explained the school is going to "pick the pencil back up,” noting there is demand for additional premium space, clubs and suites. The Tigers also want to look at infrastructure, concourse, restroom and WiFi improvements. Neff adds there's "no timeline" on these changes, but the department will start some feasibility studies this fall. More from Neff via Fowler: The school is going to be "very active" in trying to find other events like the Savannah Bananas playing in Memorial Stadium in April. (link); According to the Post & Courier’s Jon Blau, Neff says he's looked at private equity possibilities "significantly,” adding: "Really well-read on what those opportunities are.” Neff adds that Clemson hasn't taken any "next steps,” but the "need to be competitive has never been greater." Neff also confirms Clemson is one of several schools that are "sun-setting" their NIL collective, 110 Society. Even though the College Sports Commission is allowing collective deals now, the focus is still commercial NIL deals and Clemson Ventures is the main hub for that. (link)

U.S. Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA) joins Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman’s SportsWise podcast to break down the SCORE Act and says the “initial draft was incredibly broad. It went far beyond NIL or fair play and eligibility rules. And even with some negotiated improvements, it’s still too broad. The lack of a sunset clause creates the grounds for the NCAA to do largely whatever they want into perpetuity. … If you sunset an antitrust exemption, it shapes the behavior of the NCAA, because they know they’ll have to come back to Congress. Without that, you risk handing them a blank check forever.” Trahan also contends that the “best way to characterize the SCORE Act is to say very clearly that the bill started out as fulfilling the wish list of the NCAA, the Power 4 conference commissioners, and by and large, it stayed that way. Everything that the NCAA has asked Congress to codify, designating college athletes as non-employees, shielding the NCAA from antitrust liability and preempting stronger state level protections – that was baked into the SCORE Act from the get-go.” On the topic of student-athlete employment, Trahan explains that “I've heard directly from athletes who don't want to be classified as employees. And I've heard from others who do. I've also heard from some who don't want that door just completely closed to them and not having any leverage down the road. But I think the throughline in all those conversations is I haven't heard a single athlete say that they feel like they have enough of a seat at the table in college sports and would turn down the opportunity afforded to them through a collective bargaining agreement, even if it's a novel form that doesn't include compensation. And I think the SCORE Act, it just ends that discussion entirely. I think that's a mistake.” Lots more in the full podcast. (link)

On3’s Talia Goodman polled 50 women’s hoops coaches (half HCs, half ACs) to gauge their interest in expanding March Madness and found that 61% prefer the NCAA Tournament remain at 68 while 39% would like to see the field expand. Seton Hall HC Tony Bozzella: “I don’t know why it wouldn’t be 100% wanting to expand the tournament if you’re a coach. Why wouldn’t we want to give ourselves as many opportunities to play in the NCAA Tournament, if it’s possible? This is as coaches, not as fans. As a fan, you do worry about it getting watered down or too many preliminary games. As a coach, my job is to get my team to an NCAA Tournament.” TCU HC Mark Campbell adds: “I would lean towards expanding the tournament. After being at the mid-major level, to earn an at-large bid into March Madness is almost impossible. Your margin for error is close to zero. I don’t know if I’d expand to 72 or 76, but I do think it should be expanded to allow a little more opportunity.” Louisville HC Jeff Walz explains why he wants to keep it at 68. “If we expand, does it water it down? There’s always going to be somebody, whether it’s the 73rd or 77th team that’s unhappy – and just because the men decide something doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the best thing for us. I like our tournament where it is now.” USC HC Lindsay Gottlieb also weighs in: “I don’t have a clear answer on it. … I think if I had to make a decision, I’d say why mess with it? I understand that things got to where they are now by making changes. … I don’t think it would be bad if at the end of the day, they added four teams, but I like things the way they are.” (link)

Ohio State is introducing several new traditions for the 2025 football season, including a pregame Victory Bell ringer. The Victory Bell will now sound before the team takes the field and be rung by those with OSU ties. Buckeyes legend Archie Griffin will serve as the first pregame Victory Bell ringer before the Buckeyes’ season opener against Texas. OSU is also introducing THE Towel, a scarlet and gray towel that fans will be encouraged to wave to show their support. Approximately 100K towels will be distributed to fans for free at the OSU-Texas matchup. Also new this year, according to Eleven Warriors’ Dan Hope: “Brutus Buckeye will have ‘a unique and iconic entrance’ each week… while fans will be awarded a virtual Buckeye Leaf each time the opposing offense commits a false start or calls a timeout due to crowd noise. Ohio State will have a unified student section this year as Block O North is being moved to the other side of the stadium to join Block O South, creating a larger and louder student section in the south end zone. Ohio State will have fewer sponsor presentations during media timeouts this season, and the in-game presentations that do take place will utilize the entrance ramp rather than taking place on the game field. Content displayed on the video boards at the Shoe will be reformatted to ‘what Buckeye fans want: real-time stats, scores, and replays, with a presentation style that feels distinctly Ohio State.’” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork at the changes in store at Ohio Stadium this season, as he explains: “I think it’s just an evolution of college sports, right? How do we create a home field advantage? And then I think people want to be entertained. And people see these other games that are happening around the country. So I think it’s a combination of all of it. Part of it is, look, we need some new technology. So we need a new sound system. We need a new ribbon board, LED board. That’s coming into the future. So part of that was gearing up and having the right platform to be ready for that new technology. So it’s just a combination of a lot of things. A lot of people that were at the Oregon game [at Oregon] remember that game. And they’re like, ‘Oh, wow, that’s what it can be.’ People remember the Tennessee game. So it really started, I think for me, it started after the first couple games where I saw that there was an opportunity here.” Bjork also estimates the more comprehensive technological upgrades could be ready for the 2026 or 2027 season. In discussing other facilities projects, Bjork notes the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex and the new ice hockey arena are atop the to-do list. Both have been in the works for years, and he wants to make them a reality soon. “There’s always something. You’re always evolving. Look, we know we’re sitting here in the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex. We know that this is on the list. How do we do it? How do we fund it? We’re in kind of a quiet phase. We’re talking to donors about this project. So we’ve got the Woody Hayes project on the list.” (link)

Northern Illinois’ Huskie Athletic Fund reached fundraising levels “not seen in over a decade” in FY25. Unrestricted giving rose by 38%, the number of donors giving unrestricted dollars grew by 285%, overall donor participation increased by 64%, total dollars raised across NIU Athletics increased by 18%, and Huskies Invest surpassed the $1M mark for the fourth consecutive year. In addition, the Huskie Athletic Fund secured a $3.45M estate gift, the largest gift in department history. Sport-specific giving also reached an all-time high of $702,843. All told, the Huskies raised more than $5.3M, which is 48% higher than the previous high in 2012. (link)

The NFL’s 10% stake in ESPN is believed to be between $2.5B and $3B, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint and Isabella Simonetti, who note neither ESPN nor the NFL would disclose financial details. Flint and Simonetti also note if the deal passes regulatory muster, Disney’s stake in ESPN will drop to 72% from 80% while minority owner Hearst will go to 18% from 20%. Meanwhile, Guggenheim Securities analyst Michael Morris believes the NFL entering into such a partnership with one of its biggest rightsholders might become a point of concern for its other media partners. “The league being a part owner in one of its distribution partners should raise the question of whether that entity is getting favorable treatment relative to other networks and streamers that air games. Both NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Disney CEO Bob Iger downplayed those concerns with Goodell insisting the league’s relationships with its other media partners will ‘continue to flourish.’” Morris also observes the following as it relates to the deal itself: “Somebody watching RedZone is arguably not watching the live game, so there is a question as to whether that network is additive to overall viewing or cannibalistic to full-game audience.” (link)

Fox Corp CEO Lachlan Murdoch announced a launch date of August 21 for the Fox One streaming service and a price of $19.99 a month. All existing Fox cable subscribers will have access to Fox One, which will include the totality of Fox content. Murdoch: “We have long said that we aspire to engage with our viewers, wherever suits them best. The traditional cable bundle remains our favorite distribution channel, as we believe it continues to provide exceptional value to consumers.” Fox One, Murdoch adds, aims for “another important audience segment, those wanting a paid, targeted offering encompassing all Fox brands.” (link)
