It’s not a ton, but here’s what we know so far about Ohio’s upcoming AD search via a release out of Athens: “A national search for (outgoing AD Julie) Cromer’s successor will launch immediately, with the goal of appointing Ohio University’s next Director of Athletics during the current academic year.” (link)

Ice Miller partner Jarrod Loadholt tells Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich President Donald Trump’s involvement in college athletics is “political gold” as it allows him the opportunity to build relationships with key industry figures (former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban is the example), as well as be a leading voice on headline-grabbing issues. Another unnamed lobbyist to Christovich: “It’s also interesting to me that anytime a politician talked about sports and public policy there was always a ‘long list of things’ they ought to be doing [ahead] of sports. [But Trump] gets none of that blowback.” From the White House: “Just like millions of Americans across the country, sports are one of President Trump’s greatest passions. President Trump has prioritized protecting student-athletes and athletic opportunities because he recognizes the critical role college sports play in fostering qualities of leadership, teamwork, and a sense of pride in younger generations. As a champion-level golfer himself, this President is committed to promoting a legacy of athletic excellence and showcasing American greatness.” (link)

More from NC State AD Boo Corrigan’s time with the media yesterday as reported by Pack Pride’s Michael Clark. On the topic of what sports will get rev share dollars and how much added scholarships will take from the $20.5M total: “I don't know the specific numbers to be honest with you, but my guesstimate would be close to $2 million in new scholarships, as we're looking at that spread across all of our sports. You know, obviously everything is a deduction, right? You got the $20.5M and then up to $2.5M in scholarships is deducted, as well as $2.5M max on Alston money. What we did with our sports was we gave them a number, right? … We went and said, Here's a number. If you want to do that in 25 scholarships, you can do it in 25 scholarships. If you want to do it in scholarships plus [Alston] and lower the number of scholarships, you can do it that way. Ultimately, we trust our coaches. We want our coaches to have skin in the game of what we're doing. So, we provided maximum flexibility for our coaches by giving them a number and then allowing them to plug the numbers they wanted to.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous purveyor wonders about the effect dwindling attendance might have had on recent staff cuts across Stanford’s athletic department & campus, noting that attendance numbers in football and men’s basketball have “been anemic in recent years,” and that with fan interest waning, the impact on revenue has been apparent. While Canzano notes that winning would certainly help, at Stanford, there’s a lot of competition for the peripheral sports fan with good weather and lots to do in the Bay Area as well as a “nasty case of apathy” to fight against. Enter former Nike CEO and new AD hire John Donahoe, who was “hired by Stanford to pay attention to revenue, find new streams, and market the football and men’s basketball programs,” as well as to draw those apathetic fans back in. With that new blood, the “hope among those still working for him is that Donahoe learned some things about marketing and branding at Nike that he’ll employ at Stanford. The department needed some fresh vision and a plan.” Per Canzano, that vision and plan will have to come to fruition with 30 fewer athletic staffers in support, something that with seats half empty, wasn’t much of a surprise to him. FootballScoop’s John Brice provides a bit more information on the cuts affecting Stanford with the school revealing plans to eliminate over 360 full-time positions through layoffs with almost 10% of those cuts occurring within the athletics department. This comes after the University announced earlier this summer that it would trim $140M from its operating budget and just one year after the Cardinal joined the ACC, a move that Brice notes “instantly incurred a marked increase in operating expenses.” (link)

NABC Executive Director Craig Robinson tells HoopsHQ’s Seth Davis that “this job is more work than I thought it was going to be, but that’s okay because it’s a function of what’s going on in the game.” Robinson says the main source of agita among coaches is the transfer portal, and Davis writes: “There has been discussion about requiring players to sit for a year following their first transfer with an exception allowed for a coaching change. Specifics aside, there is broad agreement that the annual roster turnovers aren’t good for anyone, including the players.” Robinson: “Our coaches really want to focus on how we get this transfer thing right, because what you have now is independent contractors who at the end of it all are not going to have a degree. Even the guys who are getting degrees now aren’t necessarily getting college educated.” Another objective for the NABC is to increase the amount of input coaches have when NCAA legislation is being discussed, and Robinson explains he’s using his spot on the Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee to help bridge that gap: “We’ve tried to make it so that the coaches’ voices are heard by more people than in the past, and that’s taken some time.” (link)

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Miami (FL) is expected to file a motion to dismiss the lawsuit filed by Wisconsin and its NIL collective which alleged the Hurricanes committed tortious interference with a binding rev-share deal involving Badgers football student-athlete Xavier Lucas. Friday is the deadline to file the motion. (link)

Wake County (NC) Superior Court Judge Mark A. Davis dismissed a lawsuit brought last year by former Utah Jazz forward Thurl Bailey and nine teammates from the 1983 NC State men’s basketball championship team over the NCAA’s use of their NIL and publicity rights. Davis explained in his ruling that the players’ claims are time barred, don’t identify a violation of an enforceable legal right and are preempted by the federal Copyright Act of 1976. Sportico’s Michael McCann notes the ruling echoes those issued in similar cases, including the one brought by former Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor in an Ohio federal court and by former Kansas standout Mario Chalmers and 15 other former college basketball players in a New York federal court. More from McCann. (link)

BoiseDev’s Don Day reports on a draft site study obtained through a public records request for possible projects for Boise State’s Albertson Stadium’s east side parking lots, noting that the BSU athletic department is studying ways to develop the area to generate new revenue. Architecture firm Hord Coplan Macht’s concept highlights a plan to “convert about five acres that currently hosts about 630 parking spaces and transform it into a mixed-use project highlighted by a large hotel and condo building perched above the southeast corner of the stadium,” although Broncos Deputy AD for External Affairs Cody Gougler tells Day that the “firm put together the concepts on its own initiative and dime, and a full process for the site hasn’t yet kicked off.” Additional elements would include an additional 21-story multi-family housing building, an event/conference center space and a pool, all perched on top of a six-story parking garage with ground floor retail, while further north, the idea highlights an entertainment and retail building that opens onto an event lawn with permanent stage. The concept also shows revamping the east side concourse with new ground floor retail and contemplates largely replacing the existing Varsity Center with a new stadium expansion. BSU Senior Assoc. AD for Operations and Governance Nathan Burk told Day last month that “the school is looking to work with an owner’s representative as it navigates the process that could lead to redevelopment of the parking lots. He said they hoped to do this in a way that was low or no-cost to the school. … We want to make sure that whatever happens there benefits the east side of the stadium. If we’re going to provide the opportunity for someone to come in and create a project there, we want to make sure that we’re receiving some advantage to that.” (link)

Netflix has been in talks with MLB about a potential deal to stream the annual Home Run Derby, according to Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw and Hannah Miller, who note the company “may be interested in additional baseball programming as well.” Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis notes it is “no surprise that Netflix would have interest in the Derby, which in a typical year is eclipsed only by the following day’s MLB All-Star Game as the most-watched sporting event between the end of the NBA Finals and start of the football season. As the Derby skews younger than the All-Star Game, annually outperforming the Midsummer Classic among adults under 50, a streamer like Netflix may be particularly well-suited to carrying the event. The Derby also fits with the Netflix sports strategy of picking up one-off ‘events’ rather than full season packages.” (link)

Ohio AD Julie Cromer is headed to Baton Rouge as LSU’s new Executive Deputy AD/COO. Tigers AD Scott Woodward: “Julie is a widely respected leader in college athletics who brings tremendous experience at the highest levels to our university. Not only is her perspective as an established athletic director invaluable to charting our path forward, but her previous experience at the executive level impacting several institutions will help drive our continued growth and success. Julie’s expertise and vision will be major assets to LSU as we navigate this transformational time in college athletics, and we’re excited to welcome her to Baton Rouge.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports on a new concept reportedly being vetted in the new era of revenue sharing, “the idea of a Rolling Signing Day for football recruits. It’s ‘very’ early in the process, but the concept revolves around a signing period that’s aligned with recruits' contracts. The idea: Recruits can currently receive written contract offers on Aug. 1 heading into their senior year. Currently, they can’t formalize the agreements with schools until the December signing period, which means the deals aren’t binding. That leaves uncertainty on both sides. The idea of a Rolling Signing Day would mean that when an offer is accepted by a recruit, they can sign an agreement that’s binding by both parties. Because this idea is in the early stages, it’s uncertain whether it will rise through football channels, the Implementation Committee or the new NCAA governance model. Some of that depends on if it ends up being proposed for all sports or is initiated just for football. A source summed it up this way: ‘The days of five hats on a table and four schools being surprised are over. You can’t. No school can wait on a kid they have to have until Signing Day because they need cap certainty.’” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports the “P4 group charged with overhauling the FB calendar recommended models to the House Implementation Committee, which may soon make a recommendation to commissioners. Excluding the Big Ten, wide support continues for a single transfer portal in January. Among the models recommended to the [implementation committee] of calendar changes, there exists potential for a summer signing date and OTAs in addition to the portal window shift. … These ideas likely need more vetting.” Dellenger adds that the “group examining the calendar does include members of a fifth conference, the Pac-12, as it is a defendant conference in the House case/settlement.” (link, link)

“We are all in.” That’s NC State AD Boo Corrigan’s statement Friday during a media scrum in reference to revenue sharing and the Wolfpack staying competitive, according to Pack Pride’s Michael Clark. Corrigan: “With regards to the $20.5 million in scholarships and everything. I think it's important for our fans to know that we've known it. I haven't seen this as a point of reference of what we're going to do this with football and this with basketball and with all of our other sports, but our coaches have known since October that we were all in on what we're going to do. We look forward to the upcoming season.” On how rev sharing affects the way the school operates: “It affects everything. … You see it coming with the House case, right? You believe it's going to settle and you're talking to attorneys on campus, everyone to get an idea of where we are right within the process. … I think, as it got closer and closer, quite frankly, the scarier part was, what if it doesn't settle in? What do we do and how do we go about moving forward? But you know, the Wolfpack Club has been great. You look at the opportunity to host concerts at Carter-Finley [Stadium] you look at the naming rights opportunity, you look at what we've done with what we call pack forward right, which affected donations and parking and tickets, and the one thing we didn't really want to do was look at this whole thing and say, You know what? We're going to raise our tickets 30%. … We owe, as an administration, everything that we can think of for the ability to raise as much money as we can, to try to spread this out as far as we can.” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen “says the administration will sit down with head coaches of football, basketball and volleyball at the end of their seasons to discuss ROI [on] the use of rev-share dollars,” according to The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman. Dannen also points out that “if you miss on a $250K rev-share allocation, it's a big deal now,” with Sherman commenting that his “first thought is that could create difficult moments in season. Do the ramifications of those postseason talks influence decisions on playing opportunities, injury prevention, etc.?” (link); Also from Sherman: “Nothing new on Memorial Stadium renovation plans, Dannen says. He says it's ‘status quo’ but notes financial crises that are afoot on campus in Lincoln and systemwide.” Dannen: "We're not going to take anything to the Board [of Regents] and I don't know when we will. But the time is not now." Staying on the facilities front, Dannen notes the expansion of Cook Arena (home of the Huskers’ volleyball team at the Devaney Center) will take capacity to approximately 10,200 after the 2025 season. Cash payments out of the $20.5M rev-share pool will be distributed to select NU student-athletes in football, men's and women's basketball and volleyball, and Dannen says: "I'm not going to talk about numbers.” Sherman adds: “Increased scholarship – the money for which comes out of the rev share pool – will go this year to soccer, wrestling, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and field.” Now that the Huskers are operating under the auspices of the House settlement, Dannen says the "days are gone" of 1890 Nebraska "gathering cash and distributing it as pay for play,” per Sherman, who adds: “The collective is still facilitating NIL deals. Dannen reiterates his appreciation and Matt Rhule's appreciation for Tom and Shawn Peed of 1890 to do everything with the collective that Nebraska has asked.” Under the new system, Huskers athletes have submitted 39 deals ranging in pay from $600 to $40K, and Dannen says none have been denied, 20 were approved and 15 have not been ruled upon. More remain to be submitted. (link)

Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier hit on a number of topics in the latest edition of Frazier’s Corner, including continuing to push the concept of a “transfer fee” paid by the new school of transfer student-athletes: “Okay, you come here, you're going to have a shot at the NFL, you're going to be developed here, you're going to be sound on all three phases of the game. And if somebody else has a larger bounty out there, that's fine, too. At least you gave us that time. The only thing that I would say is it's time to pay. And I introduced this a couple of times nationally as a kind of transfer fee. Professional soccer already has this, okay, you want to leave? That's great. Well, how about throwing some money back at the school that developed that individual so he or she can do that again? So we can make the ecosystem fair. Fine, you want to come in, poach our player, talk to our person, make sure you do it legally. But at the end of the day, don't you throw something back into the kitty to help us continue to develop so we can have an ecosystem? That's fair. So, I think that we're getting that now with some of these agreements and other things that are currently happening. But, that would be the way to put up some of these guardrails, especially with the unscrupulous pieces of it, these other guardrails that some new legislation, that currently happens, is going to take care of some of that. I'm quite sure there's going to be a lot more litigation as we move forward.” Also of note, fundraising for the Huskies is up 64% in participation & 18% in dollars year-over-year. More. (link)

The Tennessean’s Aria Gerson reports that Chris Bellamy won’t play football for Vanderbilt in 2025 “after a preliminary injunction and temporary restraining order were denied by a district court ruling.” The author writes that the injunction was “denied due to the plaintiffs' inability to show that they would suffer ‘irreparable harm’ from not being able to play in the 2025 season specifically. The case will continue with a full trial, at which point it is possible the plaintiffs could gain eligibility, but if that happens it will come too late to play in 2025.” Judge William Campbell also noted in his decision per Gerson that “Bellamy and the other plaintiffs had known since at least the 2022-23 season that they would not be eligible to play in 2025 under the current rules, and they had known since the [Diego] Pavia [eligibility] waiver was issued that it did not apply to them, however they waited until the summer to file suit.” Hoping to play for the Commodores in the fall, the former New Mexico State student-athlete was already enrolled on campus and present at preseason practices although he wasn’t allowed to participate as a result of the pending lawsuit. The Lexington Herald-Leader’s Jon Hale provides the details on Kentucky’s recent 10-year apparel contract extension with Nike that runs through the 2034-35 school year. Per the extension’s terms, “the annual allotment of Nike gear the apparel company will provide to the athletic department increases from $2.125M last year to $7M in 2025-26. That rate stays the same for the next five years before increasing to $7.5M in 2030-31. Over the 10-year deal, Nike must pay UK at least $4M in royalties. Nike will pay UK additional bonuses for success in football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball ranging from $10K for reaching the conference championship game in football, winning the conference tournament in basketball and reaching a super regional in baseball or softball to $100K for winning a football national championship.” Per Hale, the bonuses for football success are cumulative “meaning Kentucky could earn up to $230K on the way to winning the SEC and national championship in the same season, while UK can only receive the largest individual bonus earned in basketball, baseball and softball. UK would receive $50K for winning a national championship in women’s or men’s basketball and $25K for winning one in baseball or softball.” The deal also includes a clause allowing Nike to cut its compensation and product allotment by 50% for any type of football TV ban as part of NCAA probation and 25% for a TV ban in men’s or women’s hoops. More from Hale. (link)
