Louisville AD Josh Heird sits down with Cards Men’s Basketball HC Pat Kelsey & Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear as the trio discuss a number of industry issues. Heird on high-profile competitive success across his sport portfolio last season: “Hire really good coaches and that's obviously an oversimplification, but it's not. I think I look at all of our head coaches as basically running their own business and trying to give them as many resources as you can possibly give them. Now every coach that we have is going to say that they need more. They want all the NIL money. Yes, amongst other things, but Pat hit the nail on the head. I do think we have created a culture where they understand, ‘Hey, I may not get everything that I want, but it might be benefiting this program over here. So I'm okay with that.’ And I think it's really hard to develop that culture. You have a bunch of type A highly, highly competitive people running their own organizations, and I didn't hire Pat to worry about the field hockey team. [...] I didn't hire the track coach to worry about the basketball program. That's not their job. And that's where for me, I say that's the administration's job to help them understand like, ‘Hey Pat, I know you would love some more NIL money, but if we can do something over here with football or whatever sport it may be, that's going to help the department as a whole.’ And when you can get coaches that they may not like it, but they understand it, that's where I think you really start to see them interact and say, ‘Hey, how do we all become successful?’ And I do feel pretty good about that right now.” (link)

VTScoop247’s Doug Bowman has a long & interesting X thread reviewing a 54-slide deck Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock is due to present to the university’s Board of Trustees on the 18th of this month that covers ACC revenue sharing, mixed use real estate opportunities, projections on future TV rights & more. Of particular note the deck indicates Notre Dame’s FY25 operating budget is $215M, an expectation that the Big 12’s new TV deal in 2030 will catch up with the ACC’s, plus, “VT needs to increase viewership.” So how to do that? Babcock lists several levers, including on-field performance, non-conf scheduling, game buyout ROI, stand-alone game value, and tune-in campaigns. Next, he has some interesting data on the "value of linear football games" aka games on ESPN or ABC. Games on those channels average 1.82M incremental viewers. That's worth $560k in year 1 and $1.61M over 5 years with the new ACC success initiative. Per game. So then you get into projections. If you win more, you're on ABC or ESPN more, so here's two slides on ‘incremental wins analysis’. 6 wins = nothing. 9 wins = $1.7M success initiative increase.” Tons more. (link)

Huskers Illustrated’s Lincoln Arneal recently visited with Big Ten Senior Director for Television Administration Grace McNamara to discuss the growth of volleyball within the league, Big Ten accomplishments, where she feels the sport is headed and more. On how volleyball has evolved and grown in the league over the past four years: “The biggest change we've seen is the media interest. We continue to have new media partners that are involved in the rotations, which is great. This was the most media that we had RSVP for attendance as well, both in person and virtually. This year we had AVCA, TOGETHXR, which is the ‘Everyone Watches Women's Sports’ brand, Big Ten Network rotations and SiriusXM who has been a part of media days since year one. We had the Out of System group join us for the first time. For us, it's really a demonstrated commitment to women's athletics, not just a talking point, and we have the media interest. You see the viewership that we have, and we have the media that want to attend. For us that continues to be a driver for this event — there's such a strong media interest in women's volleyball in the Big Ten.“ On the Big Ten’s investment in women in leadership roles and Penn State HC Katie Schumacher-Cawley becoming the first woman to win an NCAA DI volleyball title this past season: “I think what's so interesting about our female head coaches is how many you see that are also alums of their programs. It seems to be really a priority, and our presidents and athletic directors are looking really closely at those hires. I can't understate the significance [of Schumacher-Cawley’s accomplishment]. It's an institution that she's an alumni of, not to mention, obviously, the incredible personal perseverance that she has displayed. You can't say enough about how exemplary she is and her team is, and if you listen to her talk about it, it's all about her team and not about her. It just really feels like she was the perfect person to have that amazing success.” More from Arneal. (link)

NC State announces that 1,600 new men’s basketball season tickets have been sold for the upcoming season, HC Will Wade’s first leading the Wolfpack. The Athletic’s David Ubben compiles five ways G5 football coaches say they are adapting to college football’s portal-poaching era: 1) Building trust and connection. Temple HC K.C. Keeler has a mandatory rule for his staff - if it’s a player’s birthday, or he’s having surgery, he’s getting a text or call from every member of Keeler’s staff. Keeler: “If a player is going to leave, I want him to feel like he’s leaving the whole building, not just a coach.” 2) Educating players and having hard conversations. More from Keeler: “They might have three corners coming back that have played a ton of snaps. Two starters and a rotation guy. You know they’re bringing in your starter to be a fourth corner. You have to show them that. Or point out, ‘Hey, they graduated one offensive lineman and already signed five from the portal. They’re getting to you late because they found room for a sixth. You weren’t the first one they signed.’ You have to do your research and have honest conversations. It goes further if you have that relationship and they know you’re gonna shoot them straight.” 3) Being proactive. USF HC Alex Golesh: “Are your resources allocated into retaining talent or acquiring talent? Everybody will tell you they want to do both but there has to be a focus. For us, we’ve had a huge focus on retention because that’s the name of the game.” 4) Being strategic in recruiting. Staying in a geographic footprint removes one reason players leave - getting closer to family back home. Tulane HC Jon Sumrall adds: “I want to be so transparent and honest so they know what they’re signing up for. This is how we operate. If you don’t want to operate like this, that’s cool. Don’t come here. I will tell kids that in my office.” 5) Building up their own war chests. UTSA HC Jeff Traylor meets every other week with AD Lisa Campos and the program’s main fundraisers about one key topic: How can we meet our fundraising goals while also growing our budget? Traylor: “We don’t have the ability to pay max, but we want to be competitive in this league. That’s where we have to start.” Memphis HC Ryan Silverfield: “It’s really hard. You turn around and go, ‘Wait, we only have three returning starters? And every year we’re gonna have a new quarterback? If you have a guy who starts and thrives for you at left tackle, it’s hard to afford to keep him around.” Lots more. (link)

Collegiate Sports Connect convened Temple Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance and Student Affairs Kristy Bannon, North Texas Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance and Impact Alic’a Oliver and Atlantic 10 Assoc. Commissioner for Governance and Compliance Michael Sainte for a roundtable discussion on navigating today’s compliance challenges. Bannon identified the transfer portal and eligibility as the topics she’s asked about the most: “The world of unlimited transfers has drastically changed the speed at which coaches recruit and the amount of schools that student-athletes are attending in their collegiate career, which together, create a great deal of pressure on compliance and academic staffs to determine transfer eligibility in an expedited manner. The five-year clock of a student-athlete has also become a hot-button topic given the current legal landscape. The amount of misinformation spread through different populations creates a great deal of questions from various constituents.” Oliver noted: “Given the volatile legal space and common myths posted on social media, students have a heightened level of confusion and misconceptions on additional years of eligibility, redshirting for both physical and mental health reasons, and the applicability of COVID blanket waivers. This confusion is often multiplied when parents, former coaches and agents become involved and insist their student has a claim for additional eligibility. … As the student voice and opinion has gained more traction and students are finding legal avenues to advocate for themselves, even this most basic rule is being challenged.” For smaller institutions with resource constraints, Sainte advises “utilizing the resources that are on your respective campus. Our institutions are home to many of the most brilliant minds in the country. We have subject matter experts who have invested their life in studying, analyzing and solving many of today’s issues. Identifying those individuals and building a bridge to support your efforts can assist in solving many of these new challenges that are arising in our industry.” Lots more. (link)

Dr. Ian Williamson, Dean of UC Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business, shares how he applies his assessment framework to both his leadership role and the organizations he advises. He explains that, whether leading an academic institution or consulting with companies, success depends on regularly understanding the external environment, evaluating operational health, and aligning strategy with future trends.
➤ identify external shifts, sense them early through the right advisors, and translate insights into strategy, hiring, and service design
➤ regarding talent management - build internal capabilities (“making”) alongside acquiring new talent (“buying”) to create sustainable performance
Williamson’s approach highlights that effective leadership requires continual reflection on where time is spent, awareness of the environment’s influence, and disciplined adjustments to remain relevant. 🎧 on YouTube, Spotify or Apple Podcasts

Ice Miller partner Jarrod Loadholt tells Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich President Donald Trump’s involvement in college athletics is “political gold” as it allows him the opportunity to build relationships with key industry figures (former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban is the example), as well as be a leading voice on headline-grabbing issues. Another unnamed lobbyist to Christovich: “It’s also interesting to me that anytime a politician talked about sports and public policy there was always a ‘long list of things’ they ought to be doing [ahead] of sports. [But Trump] gets none of that blowback.” From the White House: “Just like millions of Americans across the country, sports are one of President Trump’s greatest passions. President Trump has prioritized protecting student-athletes and athletic opportunities because he recognizes the critical role college sports play in fostering qualities of leadership, teamwork, and a sense of pride in younger generations. As a champion-level golfer himself, this President is committed to promoting a legacy of athletic excellence and showcasing American greatness.” (link)

More from NC State AD Boo Corrigan’s time with the media yesterday as reported by Pack Pride’s Michael Clark. On the topic of what sports will get rev share dollars and how much added scholarships will take from the $20.5M total: “I don't know the specific numbers to be honest with you, but my guesstimate would be close to $2 million in new scholarships, as we're looking at that spread across all of our sports. You know, obviously everything is a deduction, right? You got the $20.5M and then up to $2.5M in scholarships is deducted, as well as $2.5M max on Alston money. What we did with our sports was we gave them a number, right? … We went and said, Here's a number. If you want to do that in 25 scholarships, you can do it in 25 scholarships. If you want to do it in scholarships plus [Alston] and lower the number of scholarships, you can do it that way. Ultimately, we trust our coaches. We want our coaches to have skin in the game of what we're doing. So, we provided maximum flexibility for our coaches by giving them a number and then allowing them to plug the numbers they wanted to.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous purveyor wonders about the effect dwindling attendance might have had on recent staff cuts across Stanford’s athletic department & campus, noting that attendance numbers in football and men’s basketball have “been anemic in recent years,” and that with fan interest waning, the impact on revenue has been apparent. While Canzano notes that winning would certainly help, at Stanford, there’s a lot of competition for the peripheral sports fan with good weather and lots to do in the Bay Area as well as a “nasty case of apathy” to fight against. Enter former Nike CEO and new AD hire John Donahoe, who was “hired by Stanford to pay attention to revenue, find new streams, and market the football and men’s basketball programs,” as well as to draw those apathetic fans back in. With that new blood, the “hope among those still working for him is that Donahoe learned some things about marketing and branding at Nike that he’ll employ at Stanford. The department needed some fresh vision and a plan.” Per Canzano, that vision and plan will have to come to fruition with 30 fewer athletic staffers in support, something that with seats half empty, wasn’t much of a surprise to him. FootballScoop’s John Brice provides a bit more information on the cuts affecting Stanford with the school revealing plans to eliminate over 360 full-time positions through layoffs with almost 10% of those cuts occurring within the athletics department. This comes after the University announced earlier this summer that it would trim $140M from its operating budget and just one year after the Cardinal joined the ACC, a move that Brice notes “instantly incurred a marked increase in operating expenses.” (link)

NABC Executive Director Craig Robinson tells HoopsHQ’s Seth Davis that “this job is more work than I thought it was going to be, but that’s okay because it’s a function of what’s going on in the game.” Robinson says the main source of agita among coaches is the transfer portal, and Davis writes: “There has been discussion about requiring players to sit for a year following their first transfer with an exception allowed for a coaching change. Specifics aside, there is broad agreement that the annual roster turnovers aren’t good for anyone, including the players.” Robinson: “Our coaches really want to focus on how we get this transfer thing right, because what you have now is independent contractors who at the end of it all are not going to have a degree. Even the guys who are getting degrees now aren’t necessarily getting college educated.” Another objective for the NABC is to increase the amount of input coaches have when NCAA legislation is being discussed, and Robinson explains he’s using his spot on the Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee to help bridge that gap: “We’ve tried to make it so that the coaches’ voices are heard by more people than in the past, and that’s taken some time.” (link)

Wake County (NC) Superior Court Judge Mark A. Davis dismissed a lawsuit brought last year by former Utah Jazz forward Thurl Bailey and nine teammates from the 1983 NC State men’s basketball championship team over the NCAA’s use of their NIL and publicity rights. Davis explained in his ruling that the players’ claims are time barred, don’t identify a violation of an enforceable legal right and are preempted by the federal Copyright Act of 1976. Sportico’s Michael McCann notes the ruling echoes those issued in similar cases, including the one brought by former Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor in an Ohio federal court and by former Kansas standout Mario Chalmers and 15 other former college basketball players in a New York federal court. BoiseDev’s Don Day reports on a draft site study obtained through a public records request for possible projects for Boise State’s Albertson Stadium’s east side parking lots, noting that the BSU athletic department is studying ways to develop the area to generate new revenue. Architecture firm Hord Coplan Macht’s concept highlights a plan to “convert about five acres that currently hosts about 630 parking spaces and transform it into a mixed-use project highlighted by a large hotel and condo building perched above the southeast corner of the stadium,” although Broncos Deputy AD for External Affairs Cody Gougler tells Day that the “firm put together the concepts on its own initiative and dime, and a full process for the site hasn’t yet kicked off.” Additional elements would include an additional 21-story multi-family housing building, an event/conference center space and a pool, all perched on top of a six-story parking garage with ground floor retail, while further north, the idea highlights an entertainment and retail building that opens onto an event lawn with permanent stage. The concept also shows revamping the east side concourse with new ground floor retail and contemplates largely replacing the existing Varsity Center with a new stadium expansion. BSU Senior Assoc. AD for Operations and Governance Nathan Burk told Day last month that “the school is looking to work with an owner’s representative as it navigates the process that could lead to redevelopment of the parking lots. He said they hoped to do this in a way that was low or no-cost to the school. … We want to make sure that whatever happens there benefits the east side of the stadium. If we’re going to provide the opportunity for someone to come in and create a project there, we want to make sure that we’re receiving some advantage to that.” (link)

Netflix has been in talks with MLB about a potential deal to stream the annual Home Run Derby, according to Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw and Hannah Miller, who note the company “may be interested in additional baseball programming as well.” Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis notes it is “no surprise that Netflix would have interest in the Derby, which in a typical year is eclipsed only by the following day’s MLB All-Star Game as the most-watched sporting event between the end of the NBA Finals and start of the football season. As the Derby skews younger than the All-Star Game, annually outperforming the Midsummer Classic among adults under 50, a streamer like Netflix may be particularly well-suited to carrying the event. The Derby also fits with the Netflix sports strategy of picking up one-off ‘events’ rather than full season packages.” (link)
