NCAA Senior VP of Policy and Governance Kevin Lennon reflects on an almost 40-year career at the national headquarters with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy mentioning that for the soon-to-be-retiring Lennon, the idea of working in Indianapolis was intriguing, but not something he expected to do for the majority of his career. Lennon: “I didn’t know what regulatory work was going to be for me. But what I have found in this work is that it is incredibly important.” As for how Lennon sees the current inflection point of the industry: “We find ourselves in this interesting point in time where all of us have something to do to better this environment of college athletics. The NCAA, our campuses, our conferences, in Congress and, dare I say, even the fans, like the people who are betting and harassing young people — if we all want sports to be better, we all have a role to play in this.” NCAA Chief Legal Officer Scott Bearby reflects on Lennon’s tenure: “What Kevin brings is credibility from athletic directors, from university presidents, from commissioners. People know Kevin is giving you what his honest feelings are and there’s just no agenda there. It’s never ‘The Kevin Lennon Show.’ That remains constant in this tumultuous world. In this chaotic world where there is, I think, an erosion of trust among some corners of college sports. We’re going to miss Kevin, because he has sort of risen above that. The national office has a trust level, in part, because of Kevin.” (link)

Football or gold medals? That’s the question Coastal Carolina’s Joe Moglia poses in an SBJ op ed while noting that all the worries over the post-House settlement financial pressures of fielding competitive football and basketball squads causing damage to U.S. Olympic prospects seem to be well-founded. With collegiate athletes serving as a critical pipeline for American Olympians, the cut or consolidation of 32 Division I Olympic sports programs so far across the country since the settlement and more likely coming as administrators and ADs come to term with rising program costs, Moglia mentions that without institutional support non-revenue sports will likely suffer as will the U.S. medal count. While larger departments will have more available funding to provide needed support, smaller departments will be forced into tough choices, and if they want successful football and basketball programs, they’ll be forced to make cuts elsewhere. Moglia: “If we want to preserve America’s Olympic dominance against our rivals, we need to protect these sports at the collegiate level. That’s our training ground. The only way to do that is to spin off football and basketball so that they can truly be run like businesses, and so that nonrevenue sports can thrive as truly amateur endeavors, for the love of the game. There’s not much time left on the clock to figure this out. Our Olympic prospects depend on it.” (link)

The State’s Chapel Fowler seeks to answer the question of how Clemson athletics will be financing an additional $26M in additional expenses. According to Tigers AD Graham Neff, the answer is by increasing total revenue by about $40M YoY to offset those new rev share and scholarship costs. As for where that revenue’s coming from, the largest earnings are expected to come through the ACC’s newly-adopted “success initiative” and “brand initiative” models where league schools will earn additional money for postseason success in football and men’s and women’s basketball and for the highest football/basketball TV viewership. Clemson “anticipates earning about $120M in ‘new revenue’ over the next six years ($20M annually) off the ACC’s success and brand initiatives. And that’s before any additional millions that would come off a long CFP run. Those earnings make up half of Clemson’s $40M in new revenue.” Neff: “That’s a significant lift for us.” Alcohol sales will also help foot the bill as will efforts through Clemson Ventures. More Neff: “Ticket prices were increased in a very thoughtful, analytical manner, as were IPTAY membership levels. That’s not something we take lightly. … That’s one that I’m incredibly sensitive on.” The last component to increasing total revenue will come through expense management, as Neff puts it, while noting there could be reductions in “how we travel, where we travel, how we schedule administrative staff and support. … While we’re proud and have been so focused on revenue generation, that expense management is significant. There’s a lot of that type of efficiency and lens from a higher ed standpoint. And so we need to do our part with that as well. … There’s a lot of really strategic things that we’re pulling on on both sides of the lever — revenues and expenses — in order to satisfy the new $26 million dollar-plus expense. That’s really important for us.” (link)

The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel sat down recently with Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock to discuss the urgency of addressing new departmental funding challenges in the new revenue-share era. Babcock: “For us it’s really simple. We need to get better (in football) because the better you do, the more money you get from the ACC. So, the recipe is still the same. Be really good in football. Be good in some of your other sports. Don’t operate under scandal and have very good academics. But yes, there’s a sense of urgency in the near-term.” With an August 18th meeting looming where Babcock will make a presentation to the university’s Board of Visitors, Teel reports that the “central theme will echo what he voiced to me: While the department must do its part, university help is essential if the Hokies are to compete successfully against their ACC rivals, let alone national peers.” How might the board respond to his appeal? Babcock: “With campus, we’re extremely confident and very close to making (this) a sustainable model. … We’ve had that conversation. (University president Tim Sands) is committed to it. Our Board of Visitors is committed to it, and now we’re just figuring out the best way to go about it. … I do feel the (ACC’s) settlement with Clemson and Florida State, as painful as that was in a lot of ways, does give the ACC a good chance at longer-term stability, but I and we in this profession would be foolish to not think there’s another inflection point coming toward the end of this decade. Is it one super league? Is it a relegation system like European soccer? Is it two leagues? So absolutely it is a race to not only figure out this new era, but to try to be positioned as best you can should anything change.” (link)

The Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel provides the highlights as UCF AD Terry Mohajir recently met with fans to answer questions while offering his view on the ever-changing collegiate athletics environment. On the state’s Board of Governors approving a measure for schools to utilize auxiliary funds to support athletic departments: “We’ve had a lot of discussion about this and what does this mean. That does give us another opportunity to use some funds, but that’s a color of money that you have, but you have to have the funds. Our university is looking at those colors, because even some of those auxiliary funds are tied up with debt service and things like that. I would not use it for rev-share. I would probably use it for retiring debt or anything that can help us with our operating budget. We have less debt than a lot of schools do in our league, but I would use that for debt and some other operating stuff.” (link)

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers notes that it “will be interesting to see if this year's slow coaching carousel is a blip on the radar screen, or a trend moving forward as schools are going to be a little tighter with [money]. There were just 21 head coaching changes in NCAA Baseball this summer.” Per Rogers’ included data, 21 marks the lowest head-coaching change number in at least the past nine years and is down significantly from 2024 when there were 44 reported moves. AthleticDirectorU for the first time since 2022 surveyed thousands of athletic administrators across the country using the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) to assess industry exhaustion, disengagement and burnout. This year’s findings reveal that burnout is even higher than it was three years ago during the pandemic. Specifically, the overall burnout risk score has increased from 39.45 to 41.07, less than two points away from the high-risk range. When analyzing burnout based on administrators’ years of experience, those with five to 10 years of experience and those with 11 to 20 years of experience report the highest risk levels of burnout. The 5-10-year group’s overall burnout score rose from 40.93 to 42.07, while the 11-20-year cohort’s overall score increased from 39.41 to 42.00. Southern Conference Commissioner Michael Cross, who was instrumental in helping ADU construct the 2022 survey, observes: “We’re witnessing professional Darwinism. The 5-10 year and 11-20 year professionals are caught in the worst possible position — as they acquire the experience to truly make a difference, the new realities of college athletics undervalue those skills. The veterans who remain after 20 years represent the survivors – they’ve either learned to work within the system, have seen enough to know that regardless of what is thrown at them they can still persist, and have likely risen to leadership positions where they have more agency, better compensation and/or have made peace with the fundamental changes in college athletics. The concerning reality is, how many talented administrators who could become transformational leaders will abandon the profession perpetuating a downward spiral? The anecdotal evidence suggests many are choosing to leave.” Lots more. (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff walks the length of the new field at the freshly renovated David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium and explains the rationale behind weaving so much of KU’s history into the design. “There’s so many aspects to what it means to be a Kansan, to what it means to be a Jayhawk, and I think we really want that embedded in the fabric of the venue. And I really think of it as a scavenger hunt. Our fans are going to have a lot of fun just exploring the different concourses, reading about the history and the ways we’re trying to bring to life what makes KU so special.” Check out the full 100-yard stroll and get a field-level look at the Jayhawks’ new-look venue. Arizona State AD Graham Rossini says a group of Sol Devils boosters raised $1.5M in two weeks to revamp football’s weight room. “There’s a lot of really good equipment in that weight room that now we can make available for other sports. … We’re maybe $6M+ into the football covered facility. That’s a high priority for us. People are coming up saying, ‘How do I help?’ We see the momentum, we want to be a part of finding solutions, providing resources and just building this exciting time. … We want to drive outcomes for our fans because we feed off their energy.” (link)

Toledo Deputy AD/CRO Connor Whelan Q&As with the Toledo Blade’s Kyle Rowland about his new role and explains that his “main objective is to grow our business. I don’t think we shy away from this anymore – this is a business. The university helps support us to a large degree. And [Rockets AD] Bryan [Blair has] done a great job in terms of getting us started, whether it’s Glass City Live or other events that he’s brought in, it’s how do we continue to grow revenues? I think it’s just being able to take a comprehensive look at our business and say, ‘OK, what do ticket sales look like? What do our outside events look like? How can we continue to make this pie greater? But I think the bigger part of that too, which goes beyond just the balance sheet, is how can we serve the university to a greater degree? Ultimately, that’s going to help our business long-term. It goes back to an enrollment play. I know adding rowing is something that’s going to help the university’s enrollment long-term. I’m sure there will be other opportunities down the line that could present themselves that we’ll continue to evaluate.” Whelan explains that when considering the opportunity at Toledo, his “perspective outside looking in, it was the strongest brand in the league.” (link)

Former Florida State/Texas A&M Football HC Jimbo Fisher says he’s looking for the “right situation” to get back into coaching: "I'm 59, in great shape and healthy. I've had success everywhere we've ever been. The end at Texas A&M, it's unfortunate, but we also had the highest-ranked team they ever had there in 2020. Our quarterbacks got hurt. We played with first-team, third-team. ... Didn't pan out like we needed to, but I still love it." Fisher goes on to point out that “I've won 72% of my games, won 80% of my playoff games. I've been fortunate to win a national championship as a head coach and assistant. I miss the relationships with players. I would be very interested in still doing it. I still think I've got a lot to give. I'd like to get back out there." (link)

Barstool Sports Founder Dave Portnoy says he doesn’t know how Fox will use him on the Big Noon Kickoff show. “I don’t know that I’m on the panel. … I’m going to be there every week. I will say, it appears to me by the media coverage people think I am the center of attention, but I don’t think that’s how it’s going. I don’t know how we’re being used yet.” Awful Announcing’s Ben Axelrod subsequently submits: “At this point, it would be pretty shocking if Portnoy’s role on the Big Noon Kickoff panel was anything but sizable, let alone the idea of him being left off the panel altogether. … All indications to this point have been that the 48-year-old will be Fox’s version of Pat McAfee, with a heavy emphasis on his pro-Big Ten bias. To that end, whatever his role does wind up being, it appears he’s prepared to make good on Fox and the Big Ten’s desire for him to be an ‘on-air fanboy’ to combat ESPN’s SEC bias. In a teaser trailer posted to his X account on Thursday, Portnoy played up Fox’s rivalry with ESPN with footage of him on Barstool’s own pregame show set to Al Pacino’s famous Scarface monologue.” (link)

The eponymous host of Josh Pate’s College Football Show joins Puck’s John Ourand to discuss his new partnership with On3 and the state of college football overall and tells Ourand he believes there’s a college football content gap. "I remember thinking…why are there 37 different NBA shows being fed to me? Why does the NFL have a show on every street corner? And I mean, college football has grown into what it is now, which is the number two sport in America – and it’s so painfully underserved. … If you really think you understand the market, and in this case, I’m part of the market…then go do something about it, was my thought. And this is just kind of a blessing that the timeline worked this way.” When he started, Pate recalls noting that “you have YouTube live-streaming coming to be, you have Facebook live-streaming coming to be, podcasting is well on its way to becoming what it’s become. And that removes the barriers of overhead and distribution – which in a previous life would have been a barrier to entry for people like me, but no longer.” Pate also notes there has been “almost like an arrogance or a hubris” about legacy TV’s attitude. “So you could get mad at that in 1994, but not do anything about it. But in 2024 or 2025 or whatever, you just go do something about it. Pull out a microphone, pull out your cell phone. And in our case, you scale and you scale and you scale, then you make a lot of money on it, you reinvest, you go hire the right people, and then you build a product that’s comparable from a quality standpoint to anything that’s being presented in the broadcast world anyway… but you don’t have any of the limitations, and you are innately in tune with your audience because you’re on the ground with them every day." Full podcast. (link)

Under Armour fell short of analysts’ expectations “on nearly every segment” in Q1, according to Sportico’s Jean Palmieri, who notes the company reported adjusted earnings per share of 2 cents, slightly below the analyst estimate of 3 cents, with a revenue drop of 4% to $1.1B. The net loss was $3M and adjusted net income was $9M. North American sales also fell more than expected, with revenue down 5% to $670M, more than the 4.4% analysts had projected. International sales dropped 1% to $467M. By category, apparel sales fell 1% to $747M while footwear sales were particularly weak, dropping 14% to $266M. The one highlight was accessories, which posted an 8% increase in sales to $100M. Founder/CEO Kevin Plank: “Moving ahead, we’re focused on strengthening our brand positioning with premium products and increasing our average selling prices through innovative offerings, optimizing our top-volume programs, and creating a more compelling full, price-to-value proposition. Regardless of the backdrop, this is about building a fearless, thoughtful and stronger Under Armour.” (link)
