AthleticDirectorU for the first time since 2022 surveyed thousands of athletic administrators across the country using the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) to assess industry exhaustion, disengagement and burnout. This year’s findings reveal that burnout is even higher than it was three years ago during the pandemic. Specifically, the overall burnout risk score has increased from 39.45 to 41.07, less than two points away from the high-risk range. When analyzing burnout based on administrators’ years of experience, those with five to 10 years of experience and those with 11 to 20 years of experience report the highest risk levels of burnout. The 5-10-year group’s overall burnout score rose from 40.93 to 42.07, while the 11-20-year cohort’s overall score increased from 39.41 to 42.00. Southern Conference Commissioner Michael Cross, who was instrumental in helping ADU construct the 2022 survey, observes: “We’re witnessing professional Darwinism. The 5-10 year and 11-20 year professionals are caught in the worst possible position — as they acquire the experience to truly make a difference, the new realities of college athletics undervalue those skills. The veterans who remain after 20 years represent the survivors – they’ve either learned to work within the system, have seen enough to know that regardless of what is thrown at them they can still persist, and have likely risen to leadership positions where they have more agency, better compensation and/or have made peace with the fundamental changes in college athletics. The concerning reality is, how many talented administrators who could become transformational leaders will abandon the profession perpetuating a downward spiral? The anecdotal evidence suggests many are choosing to leave.” Lots more. (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff walks the length of the new field at the freshly renovated David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium and explains the rationale behind weaving so much of KU’s history into the design. “There’s so many aspects to what it means to be a Kansan, to what it means to be a Jayhawk, and I think we really want that embedded in the fabric of the venue. And I really think of it as a scavenger hunt. Our fans are going to have a lot of fun just exploring the different concourses, reading about the history and the ways we’re trying to bring to life what makes KU so special.” Check out the full 100-yard stroll and get a field-level look at the Jayhawks’ new-look venue. Arizona State AD Graham Rossini says a group of Sol Devils boosters raised $1.5M in two weeks to revamp football’s weight room. “There’s a lot of really good equipment in that weight room that now we can make available for other sports. … We’re maybe $6M+ into the football covered facility. That’s a high priority for us. People are coming up saying, ‘How do I help?’ We see the momentum, we want to be a part of finding solutions, providing resources and just building this exciting time. … We want to drive outcomes for our fans because we feed off their energy.” (link)

Toledo Deputy AD/CRO Connor Whelan Q&As with the Toledo Blade’s Kyle Rowland about his new role and explains that his “main objective is to grow our business. I don’t think we shy away from this anymore – this is a business. The university helps support us to a large degree. And [Rockets AD] Bryan [Blair has] done a great job in terms of getting us started, whether it’s Glass City Live or other events that he’s brought in, it’s how do we continue to grow revenues? I think it’s just being able to take a comprehensive look at our business and say, ‘OK, what do ticket sales look like? What do our outside events look like? How can we continue to make this pie greater? But I think the bigger part of that too, which goes beyond just the balance sheet, is how can we serve the university to a greater degree? Ultimately, that’s going to help our business long-term. It goes back to an enrollment play. I know adding rowing is something that’s going to help the university’s enrollment long-term. I’m sure there will be other opportunities down the line that could present themselves that we’ll continue to evaluate.” Whelan explains that when considering the opportunity at Toledo, his “perspective outside looking in, it was the strongest brand in the league.” (link)

Former Florida State/Texas A&M Football HC Jimbo Fisher says he’s looking for the “right situation” to get back into coaching: "I'm 59, in great shape and healthy. I've had success everywhere we've ever been. The end at Texas A&M, it's unfortunate, but we also had the highest-ranked team they ever had there in 2020. Our quarterbacks got hurt. We played with first-team, third-team. ... Didn't pan out like we needed to, but I still love it." Fisher goes on to point out that “I've won 72% of my games, won 80% of my playoff games. I've been fortunate to win a national championship as a head coach and assistant. I miss the relationships with players. I would be very interested in still doing it. I still think I've got a lot to give. I'd like to get back out there." (link)

Barstool Sports Founder Dave Portnoy says he doesn’t know how Fox will use him on the Big Noon Kickoff show. “I don’t know that I’m on the panel. … I’m going to be there every week. I will say, it appears to me by the media coverage people think I am the center of attention, but I don’t think that’s how it’s going. I don’t know how we’re being used yet.” Awful Announcing’s Ben Axelrod subsequently submits: “At this point, it would be pretty shocking if Portnoy’s role on the Big Noon Kickoff panel was anything but sizable, let alone the idea of him being left off the panel altogether. … All indications to this point have been that the 48-year-old will be Fox’s version of Pat McAfee, with a heavy emphasis on his pro-Big Ten bias. To that end, whatever his role does wind up being, it appears he’s prepared to make good on Fox and the Big Ten’s desire for him to be an ‘on-air fanboy’ to combat ESPN’s SEC bias. In a teaser trailer posted to his X account on Thursday, Portnoy played up Fox’s rivalry with ESPN with footage of him on Barstool’s own pregame show set to Al Pacino’s famous Scarface monologue.” (link)

The eponymous host of Josh Pate’s College Football Show joins Puck’s John Ourand to discuss his new partnership with On3 and the state of college football overall and tells Ourand he believes there’s a college football content gap. "I remember thinking…why are there 37 different NBA shows being fed to me? Why does the NFL have a show on every street corner? And I mean, college football has grown into what it is now, which is the number two sport in America – and it’s so painfully underserved. … If you really think you understand the market, and in this case, I’m part of the market…then go do something about it, was my thought. And this is just kind of a blessing that the timeline worked this way.” When he started, Pate recalls noting that “you have YouTube live-streaming coming to be, you have Facebook live-streaming coming to be, podcasting is well on its way to becoming what it’s become. And that removes the barriers of overhead and distribution – which in a previous life would have been a barrier to entry for people like me, but no longer.” Pate also notes there has been “almost like an arrogance or a hubris” about legacy TV’s attitude. “So you could get mad at that in 1994, but not do anything about it. But in 2024 or 2025 or whatever, you just go do something about it. Pull out a microphone, pull out your cell phone. And in our case, you scale and you scale and you scale, then you make a lot of money on it, you reinvest, you go hire the right people, and then you build a product that’s comparable from a quality standpoint to anything that’s being presented in the broadcast world anyway… but you don’t have any of the limitations, and you are innately in tune with your audience because you’re on the ground with them every day." Under Armour fell short of analysts’ expectations “on nearly every segment” in Q1, according to Sportico’s Jean Palmieri, who notes the company reported adjusted earnings per share of 2 cents, slightly below the analyst estimate of 3 cents, with a revenue drop of 4% to $1.1B. The net loss was $3M and adjusted net income was $9M. North American sales also fell more than expected, with revenue down 5% to $670M, more than the 4.4% analysts had projected. International sales dropped 1% to $467M. By category, apparel sales fell 1% to $747M while footwear sales were particularly weak, dropping 14% to $266M. The one highlight was accessories, which posted an 8% increase in sales to $100M. Founder/CEO Kevin Plank: “Moving ahead, we’re focused on strengthening our brand positioning with premium products and increasing our average selling prices through innovative offerings, optimizing our top-volume programs, and creating a more compelling full, price-to-value proposition. Regardless of the backdrop, this is about building a fearless, thoughtful and stronger Under Armour.” (link)

Louisville AD Josh Heird sits down with Cards Men’s Basketball HC Pat Kelsey & Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear as the trio discuss a number of industry issues. Heird on high-profile competitive success across his sport portfolio last season: “Hire really good coaches and that's obviously an oversimplification, but it's not. I think I look at all of our head coaches as basically running their own business and trying to give them as many resources as you can possibly give them. Now every coach that we have is going to say that they need more. They want all the NIL money. Yes, amongst other things, but Pat hit the nail on the head. I do think we have created a culture where they understand, ‘Hey, I may not get everything that I want, but it might be benefiting this program over here. So I'm okay with that.’ And I think it's really hard to develop that culture. You have a bunch of type A highly, highly competitive people running their own organizations, and I didn't hire Pat to worry about the field hockey team. [...] I didn't hire the track coach to worry about the basketball program. That's not their job. And that's where for me, I say that's the administration's job to help them understand like, ‘Hey Pat, I know you would love some more NIL money, but if we can do something over here with football or whatever sport it may be, that's going to help the department as a whole.’ And when you can get coaches that they may not like it, but they understand it, that's where I think you really start to see them interact and say, ‘Hey, how do we all become successful?’ And I do feel pretty good about that right now.” (link)

VTScoop247’s Doug Bowman has a long & interesting X thread reviewing a 54-slide deck Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock is due to present to the university’s Board of Trustees on the 18th of this month that covers ACC revenue sharing, mixed use real estate opportunities, projections on future TV rights & more. Of particular note the deck indicates Notre Dame’s FY25 operating budget is $215M, an expectation that the Big 12’s new TV deal in 2030 will catch up with the ACC’s, plus, “VT needs to increase viewership.” So how to do that? Babcock lists several levers, including on-field performance, non-conf scheduling, game buyout ROI, stand-alone game value, and tune-in campaigns. Next, he has some interesting data on the "value of linear football games" aka games on ESPN or ABC. Games on those channels average 1.82M incremental viewers. That's worth $560k in year 1 and $1.61M over 5 years with the new ACC success initiative. Per game. So then you get into projections. If you win more, you're on ABC or ESPN more, so here's two slides on ‘incremental wins analysis’. 6 wins = nothing. 9 wins = $1.7M success initiative increase.” Tons more. (link)

Huskers Illustrated’s Lincoln Arneal recently visited with Big Ten Senior Director for Television Administration Grace McNamara to discuss the growth of volleyball within the league, Big Ten accomplishments, where she feels the sport is headed and more. On how volleyball has evolved and grown in the league over the past four years: “The biggest change we've seen is the media interest. We continue to have new media partners that are involved in the rotations, which is great. This was the most media that we had RSVP for attendance as well, both in person and virtually. This year we had AVCA, TOGETHXR, which is the ‘Everyone Watches Women's Sports’ brand, Big Ten Network rotations and SiriusXM who has been a part of media days since year one. We had the Out of System group join us for the first time. For us, it's really a demonstrated commitment to women's athletics, not just a talking point, and we have the media interest. You see the viewership that we have, and we have the media that want to attend. For us that continues to be a driver for this event — there's such a strong media interest in women's volleyball in the Big Ten.“ On the Big Ten’s investment in women in leadership roles and Penn State HC Katie Schumacher-Cawley becoming the first woman to win an NCAA DI volleyball title this past season: “I think what's so interesting about our female head coaches is how many you see that are also alums of their programs. It seems to be really a priority, and our presidents and athletic directors are looking really closely at those hires. I can't understate the significance [of Schumacher-Cawley’s accomplishment]. It's an institution that she's an alumni of, not to mention, obviously, the incredible personal perseverance that she has displayed. You can't say enough about how exemplary she is and her team is, and if you listen to her talk about it, it's all about her team and not about her. It just really feels like she was the perfect person to have that amazing success.” More from Arneal. (link)

The Athletic’s David Ubben compiles five ways G5 football coaches say they are adapting to college football’s portal-poaching era: 1) Building trust and connection. Temple HC K.C. Keeler has a mandatory rule for his staff - if it’s a player’s birthday, or he’s having surgery, he’s getting a text or call from every member of Keeler’s staff. Keeler: “If a player is going to leave, I want him to feel like he’s leaving the whole building, not just a coach.” 2) Educating players and having hard conversations. More from Keeler: “They might have three corners coming back that have played a ton of snaps. Two starters and a rotation guy. You know they’re bringing in your starter to be a fourth corner. You have to show them that. Or point out, ‘Hey, they graduated one offensive lineman and already signed five from the portal. They’re getting to you late because they found room for a sixth. You weren’t the first one they signed.’ You have to do your research and have honest conversations. It goes further if you have that relationship and they know you’re gonna shoot them straight.” 3) Being proactive. USF HC Alex Golesh: “Are your resources allocated into retaining talent or acquiring talent? Everybody will tell you they want to do both but there has to be a focus. For us, we’ve had a huge focus on retention because that’s the name of the game.” 4) Being strategic in recruiting. Staying in a geographic footprint removes one reason players leave - getting closer to family back home. Tulane HC Jon Sumrall adds: “I want to be so transparent and honest so they know what they’re signing up for. This is how we operate. If you don’t want to operate like this, that’s cool. Don’t come here. I will tell kids that in my office.” 5) Building up their own war chests. UTSA HC Jeff Traylor meets every other week with AD Lisa Campos and the program’s main fundraisers about one key topic: How can we meet our fundraising goals while also growing our budget? Traylor: “We don’t have the ability to pay max, but we want to be competitive in this league. That’s where we have to start.” Memphis HC Ryan Silverfield: “It’s really hard. You turn around and go, ‘Wait, we only have three returning starters? And every year we’re gonna have a new quarterback? If you have a guy who starts and thrives for you at left tackle, it’s hard to afford to keep him around.” Lots more. (link)

Collegiate Sports Connect convened Temple Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance and Student Affairs Kristy Bannon, North Texas Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance and Impact Alic’a Oliver and Atlantic 10 Assoc. Commissioner for Governance and Compliance Michael Sainte for a roundtable discussion on navigating today’s compliance challenges. Bannon identified the transfer portal and eligibility as the topics she’s asked about the most: “The world of unlimited transfers has drastically changed the speed at which coaches recruit and the amount of schools that student-athletes are attending in their collegiate career, which together, create a great deal of pressure on compliance and academic staffs to determine transfer eligibility in an expedited manner. The five-year clock of a student-athlete has also become a hot-button topic given the current legal landscape. The amount of misinformation spread through different populations creates a great deal of questions from various constituents.” Oliver noted: “Given the volatile legal space and common myths posted on social media, students have a heightened level of confusion and misconceptions on additional years of eligibility, redshirting for both physical and mental health reasons, and the applicability of COVID blanket waivers. This confusion is often multiplied when parents, former coaches and agents become involved and insist their student has a claim for additional eligibility. … As the student voice and opinion has gained more traction and students are finding legal avenues to advocate for themselves, even this most basic rule is being challenged.” For smaller institutions with resource constraints, Sainte advises “utilizing the resources that are on your respective campus. Our institutions are home to many of the most brilliant minds in the country. We have subject matter experts who have invested their life in studying, analyzing and solving many of today’s issues. Identifying those individuals and building a bridge to support your efforts can assist in solving many of these new challenges that are arising in our industry.” Lots more. (link)
