Louisville AD Josh Heird, when questioned on how the Cardinals plan to divide up its $20.5M revenue-sharing budget among 23 varsity sports for 2025-26, highlighted to the Courier Journal’s Payton Titus that U of L’s approach will be to invest in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball and baseball. When asked, Heird wouldn’t answer how much each sport would receive but “did say he approached each allocation with ‘ranges,’ as opposed to rigid numbers. [...] If there's an opportunity from another coach that says, 'Hey, could we do something here from a rev-share standpoint,' (we're) willing to have that conversation. But for all intents and purposes, it's those five programs.” U of L also faces a unique position from the standpoint of Louisville being perceived as a basketball town, forcing Heird to navigate how to fund successful teams across the department when NCAA Tournament victories carry lofty weight. Heird: “It's a challenge. There's always been some push and pull there relative to investment, but there's more now. But if football and basketball for us aren't successful, then everybody's resources are going to get reduced. I think that's what you're really trying to reconcile. How do we make sure that we can provide the most resources to all of our programs?” (link)

The Washington Post’s Barry Svrluga highlights the unique career path of Maryland AD Jim Smith, observing that with his previous experience as an executive with the MLB, NFL, MLS, Professional Bull Riding circuit and even the WWE, the Terps’ new hire hasn’t taken what would be considered a traditional path to the big chair. Smith: “I realize I’m not coming from a lifetime in college athletics. I think that really helps me. … They tell me a little bit about, ‘This university wants to do something different,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah, I’ve heard this before.’ And then they sent me the job description, and it sounded more like the president of a pro sports team than it did a traditional athletic director role.” More from Smith: “In order to be successful in the Big Ten, revenues need to grow pretty dramatically. There’s no silver bullet here, but over time, with a really good plan, you can definitely do that. … Solving that puzzle is what’s the most interesting to me. No one’s solved it yet. If anybody had solved it, we’d all be doing it. So I think that the opportunity exists to kind of chart your own path. That interests me.” (link)

More from Northwestern AD Mark Jackson’s Q&A with The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna. On shutting down the TrueNU collective to effectively move NIL in-house: “I can't speak to anybody else's collective, but our collective had been maxed out. There wasn't like this big coffer of money that was just sitting there waiting to be spent. And we were built on a charitable end. We weren't trying to do business with outside entities and connecting it with a non-charitable vertical. … TrueNU wasn't built that way. They were built to go out and raise money and find a way checking it through charity and community relations, things like that, to make it work. We know in this day and age, we're going to have to submit real deals to the clearinghouse that had real teeth. So the emphasis falls back to us as an athletic department to manage that, particularly with our MMR partners. And it's an uphill climb. This isn't a college town. We're in Chicago. It's a pro sports market. So we have our challenges there. That's the tough news. The good news is, again, we have one of the most influential, business-minded global communities probably in the country. We've had a ton of smart people doing really, really special things with businesses and corporations that have an interest in partnering with our student-athletes and partnering with our program. So we're exploring all those options right now to do it in-house. Tremendously grateful for TrueNU. But it's just going down a different path.” (link)

The Mountain West’s mediation talks with Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State regarding the $22M in exit fees the conference is seeking from each school started in the same room, but “we ended up on different planets,” a source tells JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher. Canzano reports that “one involved person compared the final stages of the recent ‘exit fee’ mediation to a tug-of-war with an elephant. The MW reluctantly moved from an opening offer of $22M per school to $18M during the negotiation. At one point, the attorneys for the departing schools said they’d be willing to pay $9M per school, per a source. The counteroffer came: ‘$18M per school.’ A second offer was eventually presented: ‘$10 million per school.’ The answer again came: ‘$18 million.’” A conference spokesperson asserts to Canzano that the league followed bylaws established under the watch of the departing schools and believes it has acted in good faith, leaning into the league’s conflict-of-interest and resignation policies. Kentucky and JMI Sports have agreed to a multimedia rights agreement valued at more than $465M that extends the parties’ existing contract through 2040. In addition to the $465M in multimedia rights value, key terms of the agreement also include a new revenue sharing model allocating 80% of net revenue from all inventory and advertising opportunities to UK and Champions Blue LLC over the next 15 years as well as an innovative model that “introduces new services and incentivizes revenue growth across existing multimedia rights, athletics facilities investments, expansion of JMI Sports-managed NIL opportunities and the development of new sponsorship categories.” (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini has the latest on the gambling allegations surrounding Oklahoma Football student-athlete John Mateer, noting that the quarterback called the Venmo descriptions of payments in reference to sports betting “inside jokes” in a Tuesday statement, while denying ever having bet on college football or other sports. Mateer: “The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false. My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends. I have never bet on sports. I understand the seriousness of the matter, but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo transactions suggest otherwise. I can assure my teammates, coaches, and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in any sports gambling.” All of this comes after screenshots and a video of Venmo transactions in Mateer’s name began spreading Monday night on social media. The West Virginia attorney general's office has filed a motion to weigh in on an eligibility lawsuit involving four would-be West Virginia transfers, according to Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich, who notes the AG is “supporting the athletes' argument that the challenged eligibility rules violate the Sherman Antitrust Act.” Ehrlich adds: “This is a rather significant turn of events, as the first time a state attorney general has weighed in on one of these cases. Though, of course, this particular office has gone after the NCAA in the recent past as a chief litigant in the Ohio lawsuit over transfer rules.” (link); Full amicus brief. (link)

The San Antonio Express-News’ Patrick Danner digs into why Baylor has filed a federal lawsuit against Boston University asserting trademark infringement and unfair competition claims while also seeking to recover legal costs, plus interest, and any other relief the court deems appropriate. In the litigation filed in Waco against the Boston University trustees, Baylor “alleges Boston University’s use of ‘an interlocking BU design’ is ‘essentially identical and/or confusingly similar’ to the one used by the Texas school,” and that use of the trademark is “likely to cause confusion, to cause mistake, or to deceive consumers.” The suit goes on to proclaim that Boston University should be “permanently enjoined from using an interlocking BU mark and any other mark or design that is confusingly similar to Baylor’s Interlocking BU, and from any attempt to retain any part of the goodwill misappropriated from Baylor,” while also requiring the Terriers to “destroy all goods, packaging, signage, advertisements, internet postings and … any other materials bearing or using an interlocking BU mark.” (link)

Northwestern AD Mark Jackson Q&As with The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna as the pair run through some key industry issues & needle-moving in Evanston. Jackson on the importance of the new Ryan Field: “I think one of the concerns when you're in the Big Ten, particularly now, is your ability to go out and generate long-term viable revenue. And from Northwestern, prior to this project, there weren't a lot of levers to pull, right? We had basketball going, Welsh-Ryan, again, the Ryan family put a lot of money into that, and that has generated resources we've never had before. But we talked about it, right? The old Ryan Field, and even the new pop-up, as much as we've tried to create premium in there, it still pales in comparison to what we compete against, right? So to do this project the right way, to be realistic, to be uniquely Northwestern, this isn't 80,000 seats, it's 35,000. [...] We know we're dialed into one of the most attractive corporate bases probably in the world, a half-hour away, and that's going to be an element of this stadium, too, that was really attractive to me, to go out and get these corporate partnerships and have tremendous momentum early on with those kinds of relationships, cornerstone partners. To make it a 365-day type of event space, too, I'm really excited about. I've never done that before. We've talked about concerts, community events. We think there's opportunities for professional sports organizations to utilize the space.” Lots more. (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua talks about the importance of bringing in former men’s hoops star Pat Garrity as GM of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, particularly within the context of the Fighting Irish losing women’s hoops standout Olivia Miles to TCU in the offseason. “When you’re on that plane flying home from that (TCU) game and the world is changing underneath you, you have to get out ahead of it. Going forward, we’re going to be better prepared to manage that moment of change.” Hiring Garrity, Bevacqua believes, will keep Notre Dame from being as blindsided as it was by Miles’ departure last spring. “We had to have someone who’s waking up every day thinking about roster retention, transfer portal, movement of players. What is the modern landscape of women’s college basketball? As a head coach, you can’t do everything.” (link)

UNC Wilmington AD Michael Oblinger and Stony Brook AD Shawn Heilbron sit down with Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer at the 2025 NACDA Convention to discuss their strategic preparation and execution post-House, share their thoughts on the NCAA governance structure and weigh in on what role Congress could play in this new era. Heilbron is operating under the assumption something will get done in Congress. “I feel like there’s some traction. I’m not there, so I don’t know. I maintain some optimism. There’s a little bit of be careful what you wish for in all of this because what does that mean? But I think the interest is there and ultimately this is about having a broad, national framework rather than the patchwork of state laws. So, we need it. I do think it’s coming and whatever form it is, I think it will be welcomed.” Oblinger notes that UNCW is always mindful of the need to generate more revenue and remain diligent about controlling expenses and says: “We’ve been through some conversations at the league level that are uncomfortable, but are we doing the things that we should be doing? Just because we did them last year or two years ago or whatever it may be, that’s not good enough in a lot of ways. So, being strategic – are we spending money wisely? Because if I'm competitive and Shawn is competitive, that’s going to be good for our league as a whole and elevate the whole thing. We kind of threw out the playbook a little bit. … There’s no real bad ideas here. Let’s talk about what we’re doing. If we can drive additional revenue or we can save a dollar here and there, be more strategic, those are all positive things for us.” Full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

Iowa announces the Duke Slater Field emblem at Kinnick Stadium will be relocated ahead of the 2025 football season. Originally installed prior to the 2021 season, the emblem currently sits at each 25-yard line. It will now be moved to the north and south end zones of the field. Hawkeyes Deputy AD for Strategic Initiatives/COO Joe Parker: “We want to be clear that the field naming is not changing and will remain Duke Slater Field. The NCAA approved the use of corporate logos on the field during regular-season games in the same location where we’ve proudly honored one of our greatest football legends. By relocating the recognition to the end zones, we preserve Slater’s legacy while also creating a new opportunity to generate revenue in support of our student-athletes.” (link)
